RNLI lifeboat springs into action as 16ft yacht runs aground leaving group in trouble

The alarm was raised on Saturday afternoon

A lifeboat operation was launched over the weekend after a 16ft yacht ran aground in a local lake.

Lough Derg RNLI lifeboat was launched yesterday afternoon, October 8, shortly after 5pm, to assist a yacht that was reported aground.

Helm Eleanor Hooker and crew members Tom Hayes, Joe O’Donoghue and Richard Nolan rushed to the scene, on a shoal north of Terryglass Harbour, with Force 3/4 southeasterly winds and good visibility.

The lifeboat reached the casualty vessel just before 5.30pm and the crew first ensured that the two people on board were safe, unharmed and wearing their lifejackets.

Then, the RNLI volunteers ensured the vessel was not damaged as they tried to free the yacht.

RNLI explained: “An RNLI volunteer boarded the casualty vessel and established that it was not holed. The skipper had been hoisting their sails when their outboard engine failed, and the wind pushed the yacht onto the shoal.

“The lifeboat attempted to free the yacht from the shoal but returned to the casualty vessel when it was evident that the bow keel plate was stuck fast. Two RNLI crew rotated the bow and used the wind and wave to lift the casualty vessel off the shoal.

“The lifeboat took the yacht out into safe water where volunteers set up and alongside tow. The casualty vessel was tied safely alongside at Terryglass Harbour at 6.45pm.”

Crew concerns raised before barge grounding

You are not permitted to download, save or email this image. Visit image gallery to purchase the image.

A Westland Mineral Sands barge has run aground near Westport overnight.

The Manahau came ashore at Carters Beach during a thunderstorm about midnight.

Buller District Mayor Jamie Cleine said the motorised barge was carting mineral sands and had been awaiting suitable weather to come into port.

Grounding of Manahau barge at Westport raises major questions https://t.co/jB5LJaaT8L via @maritimeunion — Maritime Union of New Zealand (@maritimeunion) August 31, 2024

"It's been anchored off Westport for the best part of a week ... and obviously last night's pretty severe thunderstorms and weather - something's happened and changed for them, and it's ended up coming ashore."

Cleine said Westland Mineral Sands would want to pull the boat back out into the water as soon as possible.

The job would require tugs, but there were none anywhere close to Westport, so they would need to be brought from elsewhere.

Union raises concerns about international crew

The Maritime Union national secretary Carl Findlay said concerns had been raised previously by New Zealand seafarers about the foreign crew and flag of the barge.

There had been no reports of injuries, which Findlay said was fortunate, as the West Coast was a notoriously treacherous maritime environment.

The 97.53m-long and 3706-GT self-powered Manahau  had only just come into service in August, carrying mineral sands out of shallow draught port Westport to Nelson.

The  Manahau  did not have a New Zealand crew and the flag state was Niue, Findlay said.

"Vessels such as the  Manahau  operating in New Zealand's unique and challenging maritime environment should be crewed by experienced New Zealand seafarers."

It had been extremely disappointing to see substantial government funding go towards a vessel operating in our waters that was neither New Zealand flagged nor crewed, Findlay said.

"In the last several years, we saw an upsurge in New Zealand-crewed coastal shipping, but this is now going backwards with the loss of coastal shipping services, or in this case, failing to provide jobs for skilled local crews.

"New Zealand needs to build its coastal shipping capacity, and that means New Zealand-owned, operated and crewed ships."

Witnesses capture video, photos of moment boat runs ashore in Atlantic Beach

ATLANTIC BEACH, N.C. (WNCT) — It was a scary moment for those who witnessed a boat run ashore in Atlantic Beach on Saturday.

“It was a bizarre moment,” said Emily Carr, who was visiting Atlantic Beach and captured the moment on video with her cell phone.

“Shouldn’t they turn?” is what Neil Vig said while recording the video and before the boat ran aground. He was visiting Atlantic Beach with his family from Minnesota. “Children … hey.”

“We couldn’t believe what we were seeing,” said Elaine Nichols, who was also visiting Atlantic Beach.

Vig said, “Holy crap, yeah, it’s not stopping.”

The boat came straight to shore.

“The boat just kept coming and it was coming fast,” Nichols said.

Vig explained, “As it got closer and closer, it was definitely nerve-wracking.”

“We were out on the balcony screaming at the people on the beach to move,” Carr said.

Atlantic Beach police say it happened around 7 Saturday night near the Doubletree Hotel pier.

“Something I’ve never seen,” Carr said. “I’m 41 and grew up on the beach and been around boats my entire life and never seen anything like it. The last thing you expect to happen is a 48-foot sport fishing boat barreling towards the shore.”

Police said at least seven people were on the boat. Two were taken to the hospital. They were expected to be OK. An investigation into the cause of the crash continued Sunday by NC Wildlife.

“Thankfully there were no people in the water. That would have been catastrophic,” Carr said.

What to Do If Your Yacht Runs Aground

We pray it doesn’t happen often, but from time to time someone’s yacht runs aground. Shoals, beaches, rocks, and shallow grounds cannot always be avoided. If your yacht runs aground and you need emergency repairs, contact the professionals at Yacht Management immediately, because we can help! We provide emergency yacht repairs from South Florida to the Bahamas, The Caribbean, and surrounding areas: (954) 941-6447.

Check for Injuries

Is anyone injured? If so, your priority should be to get the injured being to a safe place, providing them with immediate medical attention.

Find the Leak

If the boat is taking in water, find the source of the leak as soon as possible, and use your emergency patches to fix the leak. If there is a leak that is clearly not manageable, it’s always best to contact the coast guard .

Stop – Do Not Power Forward

Powering forward can cause more damage, and the only keeping your boat stable may be the rocks you ran into. Stop and assess the situation before proceeding.

Assess the Situation, then Take Action

-          Do a quick visual inspection of the impact site

-          Set your kedge anchor to stop your boat from drifting further aground

-          Use a lead line to check the depth of the water around you

-          Check if there’s deeper water ahead and/or around you

Getting Loose

-          Leaks or Severe Damage: If you were traveling slowly when you ran aground, you may not encounter any leaks. However, you will likely need emergency yacht repairs. Find a yacht repair service center that can come to you.

-          Tide: If the tide is rising, then your best options is to wait and simply float away. The best plan is always the plan with the least motion.

When You Can’t Get Loose

If your yacht runs aground and you cannot get loose, you must summon help using your visual distress signals, as well as calling for assistance using your VHR marine radio.

Cargo ship runs aground near Montreal following mechanical failure, blocking marine traffic

6 ships will have to be anchored due to blocked canal.

Social Sharing

A cargo ship has run aground near Kahnawà:ke on Montreal's South Shore after it experienced a mechanical failure, according to the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation.

A spokesperson for the corporation, Jean Aubry-Morin, said workers are aiming to have the vessel moving again by noon tomorrow. So far, six other ships are impacted by the blockage on the South Shore canal. The ships are headed to be anchored on Lake Saint-Louis or in the St. Lawrence River close to the port of Montreal.

  • UPDATE: Cargo ship blocking canal near Kahnawà:ke tugged free

The Dutch vessel, Heemskerkgracht ,  headed for Spain, was turning on its axis on the canal along Lake Saint-Louis to go back up to Montreal when the boat's engine stopped working. The nose of the vessel then crept up the riverbank where the ship ended up getting stuck at a 45-degree angle.

Heemskerkgracht is a 138-metre cargo ship carrying scrap metal.

The "unfortunate incident" does not pose a threat to the environment and no injuries have been reported, Aubry-Morin said.

This 138-metre ship got stuck in a canal near Montreal and is blocking cargo traffic

The ship traffic blockage is complicating Canadian exports, Aubry-Morin said, explaining that "the marine highway was the fallback position for exporting grain" amid the ongoing railway labour dispute which had brought freight traffic to a halt since Thursday.

"There's been a lot of redirection of cargo on the inland marine highway and I think for us time is the essence," he added.

Once the Heemskerkgracht lost power, the ship drifted downstream, according to Eric Esclamadon, deputy superintendent of the marine environmental response team with the Canadian Coast Guard.

The ship first hit the southern embankment of the canal before rebounding and then running aground on the northern side of the canal, Esclamadon said.

Map showing where ship crashed

"That's why it's resting at a diagonal within the navigation channel and is blocking navigation in the area," Esclamadon said.

There appears to be no damage to the ship. Crews are monitoring the situation, and there is no water infiltrating the vessel, nor is there no pollution leaving it, he said.

The Coast Guard also surveilled the site with drones to make sure no pollution was seeping into the river, Esclamadon added.

The canal is a crucial link for commercial ships travelling between the Great Lakes and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. There is no alternative route around the canal.

  • Teamsters union serves CN Rail with 72-hour strike notice as CPKC stoppage continues

"While it is blocked the way it is, all the ships that are in the Great Lakes are stuck in the Great Lakes, and those that are on the other side, well, they can't go to the Great Lakes," Esclamadon said.

"The longer the channel is blocked, the longer the list of vessels waiting will be."

Aubry-Morin predicts that, by the time the ship is afloat, there could be up to 14 anchored ships. Once dislodged from the riverbank, the vessel will be sent to a pier for inspection.

Kahnawà:ke monitoring situation

Lloyd Phillips, commissioner of public safety for the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke, said Kahnawà:ke first responders were quickly on the scene assessing the situation after the ship ran aground.

Since then, the council has been in close contact with St. Lawrence Seaway and Coast Guard officials.

Safety is a priority for the small Kanien'kehá:ka community in a situation like this one, said Phillips. For example, Kahnawà:ke's hospital sits on the canal bank, where dozens of cargo ships go by every day, he explained.

A shipping disaster is something that is always on people's minds, Phillips said.

man in front of boat

"This is a best case scenario out of a worst case situation," he said.

"The situation could have been much, much worse if it was [carrying] a hazardous material, or there was a breach in the hull."

Landon Goodleaf, member of the Kahnawà:ke Marina, was sitting outside with friends when they saw the ship lose control.

"We heard a 'bang, bang, bang' and it was ripping along the side of the shore," he said. "It was unreal. You don't see that every day, a big ship losing control."

The Aran Islands RNLI and Rescue 115 helicopter came to the rescue of a group of fishermen stranded off Inis Mór on Sunday morning.

Shortly before 5am on Sunday morning the all-weather lifeboat was dispatched following a mayday call from a fishing boat.

The boat had run aground at An Coirnéal Port Eochla on the north side of Inis Mór with five fishermen aboard.

By the time the lifeboat arrived on the scene the fishing boat had begun to take on water, causing the crew to abandon ship.

The five fishermen had abandoned their 21m trawler and were in a life raft alongside the vessel. All were safe and well and in good spirits.

Weather on scene at the time was blowing a force 5 north west wind which was easing and there was a moderate sea of 2m and good visibility.

The Irish Coast Guard helicopter, Rescue 115 from Shannon was also tasked along with Coast Guard and Fire Service units to the shore side.

Having assessed the situation, a decision was made by Aran Islands RNLI Coxswain Declan Branigan to launch the lifeboat’s smaller daughter inflatable lifeboat should it be need to access closer to shore.

On arrival of Rescue 115, the situation was further assessed and it was agreed that the safest option was to winch the five fishermen to safety.

The lifeboat stood by until all casualties were accounted for before returning to Kilronan Pier at 7:30am this morning.

Meanwhile, on Saturday morning the lifeboat crew were requested to launch for a medical evacuation at 4:10am after a person had a fall.

Weather at the time was blowing a force 5-6 northwest wind. There was a moderate sea and good visibility. The lifeboat launched and transferred the casualty to Rossaveel to an awaiting ambulance.

Speaking following the call out, Aran Islands RNLI Coxswain Declan Branigan said, “We wish all casualties well following their experiences this weekend.”

“Yet again, yesterday and today’s call outs were good examples of how regular training and volunteers willing to give their time when called upon, leads to successful outcomes.”

“We also extend our thanks to our colleagues in the Irish Coast Guard and fire service, this morning’s call out showed great multi-agency cooperation.”
