Review of Tartan 3500

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season.

The boat equipped with a masthead rig. The advantage of a masthead rig is its simplicity and the fact that a given sail area - compared with a fractional rig - can be carried lower and thus with less heeling moment.

The Tartan 3500 is equipped with a fin keel. A boat with a fin keel is more manoeuvrable but has less directional stability than a similar boat with a full keel.

The keel is made of lead. Compared with iron, lead has the advantage of being 44% heavier, which allows a smaller keel and hence less water resistance and higher speed.

The boat can only enter major marinas as the draft is about 1.98 - 2.08 meter (6.50 - 6.80 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

The boat is typically equipped with an inboard Yanmar 3GM30F diesel engine at 27 hp (20 kW). Calculated max speed is about 6.3 knots

Tartan 3500 user/maintenance manual

I hope that someone can help. I need the maintenance and user manuals for a 1997 Tartan 3500. I need to know rigging tension, how to rig the reefing and other lines, cordage sizes and lengths, the various procedures for maintenance, haulout, winterizing, etc. Does anyone have a manual for this boat? Tartan changed the 3500 in about 2004 and so the later manuals are not relevant. Best regards, Peter

Hello, Philip, I would be very appreciative if you could scan and send me any of the pages that pertain to rigging tension, the running rigging including how to rig the shuttle inside the boom, line lengths and sizes, etc. I would really ike to get the whole manual, but that is too much to ask you for. Gregson, I have tried to help by sending the pdf I have created for you but find that sailnet does not allow me to send private messages. Nor does it allow of pdf's. manuals still available... I have a manual for a 1997 Tartan 3500. The manual isn't very good because a great deal of information on tuning and performance measurement for the boat and engine are missing. Designed to be a well-mannered, firm and able sailing vessel, the 3500 delivers performance. The long waterline and strong rig offer fast passages and a competitive edge, while the contoured cockpit seats, wide coamings and pedestal steering ensure a skipper's comfort both at sea and dockside. Her frame has been well-engineered and constructed to save weight yet remains sound. The hull is a balsa-cored sandwich structure with a vinylester barrier coat between NPG-ISO gelcoat and the hand-laid laminate. A cored deck and a bond-in-place grid structure produce a strength-to-weight ratio that makes her a high-performance, medium-displacement cruiser-racer. The pattern non-skid of her deck maximizes safety, comfort and function. Logical in layout, she has 2-foot-wide side decks and inboard shrouds that afford easy passage both fore and aft, plus allow optimum sheeting angles for efficient upwind sailing.   Down below, she is fully fitted for cruising comfort with good stowage and generous accommodation. Her interior is highlighted by Tartan's trademark teak joinery and hand rubbed oil finish while being suitably complemented by the pleasing aesthetics of her fine fabric selections. The voluminous curves coupled with the clever use of angular bulkheads enable her nav station to be tucked aft while providing plenty of room to stand and move about.

Starting forward is the private forward cabin with V berth (2 storage drawers under) and a hanging locker to port and locker with shelves to starboard. 

In the main cabin, there are settees to port and starboard with lockers above and a beautiful teak two leaf table with storage on the end and center. 

Just aft and to starboard is the galley with double stainless-steel sink, two burner Force 10 propane stove/oven and top opening refrigerator freezer. Further aft is the nav station.

Aft of the main cabin to port is the head with marine toilet, sink, vanity and stall shower.
