, we saw a couple of nice coastal cruisers. Two different designs- a 2001 Tartan 3500 and a 1998 Moody 362. We're looking for a nice coastal cruiser to take us to the Keys and into the . , and with a fully battened main. The Moody was a , with a main. The aft was very nice and it had new .

I believe the Moody has a solid FRP glass , while the Tartan is cored to save weight. I'd give the nod to the Tartan for more spirited sailing, and the Moody for comfort.

, one of the oldest in the world, but little known in the .
I sailed a Moody 38 for 14 years, including 11,000 miles in 2 1/2 years, from UK to the , then the , , up to northern Main.
Solid glass hulls, built like a brick built ............, also faster than they look.
Won many in ocean races like the UK-Azores and back.
is the driving sail, in main is a balancer.
Hold their very well, but make more this side of the pond than in USA.
Will be romping along when most are or running for shelter, wonderful heavy sea boat.
Visit the Moody Owners web site for huge amounts of information.

and in-mast furling main.
Worst conditions I sailed her in was in the UK western approaches, constant 50+ knots of gusting to 62 knots. We hove to for 12 hours, making about one and a half knots to leeward, and when the dropped to 35 knots sailed on.
Moody's are bomb proof sea , and will cope well with the tough conditions the produce at times.

Boat: Tartan 3700 CCR
it for very close to what I paid for it.
The boat had furling (worked great) and the line flaking system for the main. Dutchman ! Dutchman didn't as nicely as the demo, but still worked fine. We had AC and it was a dream to take on overnights.
Very very stable boat. We didn't , but we would, frequently overtake J .and larger boats because it sailed so well. The 135 Genoa was a house. We upgraded the factory Refrig got more and less draw.

Loved tartan . It is soooo much better than the laminated stuff you see on beneteus. They are in a to the bottom, and they have won.

We upgraded to a used tartan 3700. And we are happy. Tartans hold their value. tartans can go without breaking something.

Moody is a great boAt also, but never sailed one . Ally's a quality well built boat.
Make sure which ever boat your buy that your guy checks everything, every thing that is supposed to work, all , and I would suggest an amp hour meter of you are going off shore

and below than many 10 year old production boats. Tartans have the reputation for being very well built, and are very stiff sailing boats generally with higher ballast/displacement than others due to higher level hull/structural build without heavy glued together liners.
I don’t have firsthand experience on Moodys. But I would suggest that for the sailing you are doing the light air strength of the Tartan will be more important than the heavy air strength of the Moody. In 6-8 knots of breeze I’m sailing fast when others are motoring and I know the 3500 has similar traits.

Review of Tartan 3500

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season.

The boat equipped with a masthead rig. The advantage of a masthead rig is its simplicity and the fact that a given sail area - compared with a fractional rig - can be carried lower and thus with less heeling moment.

The Tartan 3500 is equipped with a fin keel. A boat with a fin keel is more manoeuvrable but has less directional stability than a similar boat with a full keel.

The keel is made of lead. Compared with iron, lead has the advantage of being 44% heavier, which allows a smaller keel and hence less water resistance and higher speed.

The boat can only enter major marinas as the draft is about 1.98 - 2.08 meter (6.50 - 6.80 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

The boat is typically equipped with an inboard Yanmar 3GM30F diesel engine at 27 hp (20 kW). Calculated max speed is about 6.3 knots

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Tartan 3500 is 2.09, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 7.3 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Tartan 3500 is about 219 kg/cm, alternatively 1227 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 219 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1227 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio)?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 38m 2 (409 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

Tartan 3500 user/maintenance manual

  • Add to quote

I hope that someone can help. I need the maintenance and user manuals for a 1997 Tartan 3500. I need to know rigging tension, how to rig the reefing and other lines, cordage sizes and lengths, the various procedures for maintenance, haulout, winterizing, etc. Does anyone have a manual for this boat? Tartan changed the 3500 in about 2004 and so the later manuals are not relevant. Best regards, Peter

tartan 3500 sailboat data

I didn't see it here Tartan Yachts Model perhaps a call to Tartan will get what you need?

Tartan 3500 manuals That site lists the brochure of a modern Tartan 3500 only. It does not have the technical detail that I need. Regards, Peter

Peter I have T3500 #131, 2001, and have all the original manuals and instructions including the rigging tensioning instructions. Would you like me to scan the relevant pages and post them? Philip Catcher T3500 #131

Hello, Philip, I would be very appreciative if you could scan and send me any of the pages that pertain to rigging tension, the running rigging including how to rig the shuttle inside the boom, line lengths and sizes, etc. I would really ike to get the whole manual, but that is too much to ask you for. Thanks for your offer, Best regards, Peter

Tartan 3500 manual Greg, I'll send you this .pdf privately since it would seem one cannot upload pdf's to this forum (?!) How can that be possible - I must be missing something.... Philip

Thanks, Philip. Do you have my e-mail address? Peter

tartan 3500 sailboat data

Greg, I believe you need at least 10 posts to upload. Tom

Gregson, I have tried to help by sending the pdf I have created for you but find that sailnet does not allow me to send private messages. Nor does it allow of pdf's. Nor visibility of email addresses. Quite a forum. You may want to use tartansailing instead. I find the assumed hostility level incorporated into the organization of Sailnet a touch off-putting. My e-mail address is philip at philiprobertsmodels.com. I will not be using this forum again. Philip

Peter, I now have the complete manual as a pdf. email me your address and I will send it to you. I have also posted it on tartansailing in "files" Philip T3500#131 Catcher

Are these manuals still available? Thank you Don

manuals still available... I have a manual for a 1997 Tartan 3500. The manual isn't very good because a great deal of information on tuning and performance measurement for the boat and engine are missing. However, it does provide information on some aspects of the boat that I have found valuable. Do you want it? If so, send me an e-mail address to which I can e-mail the two files. Best regards, Peter

Thanks - I have the manuals.

Manufacturer Provided Description

Designed to be a well-mannered, firm and able sailing vessel, the 3500 delivers performance. The long waterline and strong rig offer fast passages and a competitive edge, while the contoured cockpit seats, wide coamings and pedestal steering ensure a skipper's comfort both at sea and dockside. Her frame has been well-engineered and constructed to save weight yet remains sound. The hull is a balsa-cored sandwich structure with a vinylester barrier coat between NPG-ISO gelcoat and the hand-laid laminate. A cored deck and a bond-in-place grid structure produce a strength-to-weight ratio that makes her a high-performance, medium-displacement cruiser-racer. The pattern non-skid of her deck maximizes safety, comfort and function. Logical in layout, she has 2-foot-wide side decks and inboard shrouds that afford easy passage both fore and aft, plus allow optimum sheeting angles for efficient upwind sailing.   Down below, she is fully fitted for cruising comfort with good stowage and generous accommodation. Her interior is highlighted by Tartan's trademark teak joinery and hand rubbed oil finish while being suitably complemented by the pleasing aesthetics of her fine fabric selections. The voluminous curves coupled with the clever use of angular bulkheads enable her nav station to be tucked aft while providing plenty of room to stand and move about.

Accommodations

Basic Layout:

Starting forward is the private forward cabin with V berth (2 storage drawers under) and a hanging locker to port and locker with shelves to starboard.

In the main cabin, there are settees to port and starboard with lockers above and a beautiful teak two leaf table with storage on the end and center.

Just aft and to starboard is the galley with double stainless-steel sink, two burner Force 10 propane stove/oven and top opening refrigerator freezer. Further aft is the nav station.

Aft of the main cabin to port is the head with marine toilet, sink, vanity and stall shower.

Further aft is the large aft cabin with storage locker and commodious double berth.
