Insider Reveals Steelers Contract Offer to Brandon Aiyuk

PITTSBURGH -- Just when it appeared a conclusion to the Epic of Brandon Aiyuk was imminent, another wrench was thrown into the works after the Pittsburgh Steelers' extension offer to the wide receiver was revealed.

Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer reported that the Steelers put just under $28 million per year on the table for Aiyuk, who brushed off that bid and ran back to the San Francisco 49ers looking to continue negotiations and find common ground after declining several deals that would've sent him elsewhere throughout the offseason.

"The San Francisco 49ers’ star didn’t want to go to New England, which offered him more than $30 million per year in its proposals, or the Cleveland Browns," Breer wrote. "The Steelers’ price point was less than $28 million, which put Pittsburgh right in the neighborhood the Niners were inhabiting—with Mike Tomlin’s presence there the drawing card. That, in turn, pushed Aiyuk back to the table with the Niners."

It's been hard to gain a firm understanding of what Aiyuk has truly desired throughout this entire process. He passed up on a massive pay day from the Patriots that would've earned him the second-largest average annual value (AAV) at his position behind Justin Jefferson, though he showed little interest in playing for the team in the midst of a rebuild.

As Breer noted, Aiyuk also nipped a trade to the Browns in the bud that would've sent Amari Cooper and several draft picks back to the Niners.

The 26-year-old star appears more willing to become a member of the Steelers, however, and the fact that the two teams agreed to terms last week made that possibility all the more tangible. Breer's report complicates the situation though, as Pittsburgh's bid to Aiyuk has seemingly halted all momentum and put the trade in purgatory for the time being.

In terms of next steps, Breer is of the belief that a return to San Francisco for Aiyuk feels like the most logical finish to this entire exercise, even despite the fact that the parties aren't on the greatest terms as of right now.

"As it stands, the situation is still unstable," Breer wrote. "If the Niners could’ve gotten a player via a deal with the Steelers (Pittsburgh refused to give one up, so it’d have to have been in a corresponding trade), there’s a chance Aiyuk would be in Pittsburgh now. And although things have certainly gotten sideways between him and the Niners, no doors have closed on a return."

It's possible that Pittsburgh could simply increase their offer and lure Aiyuk that way, but there are no certainties, especially considering how this saga has unfolded. A resolution feels like it should come before the start of the regular season, so something will have to give sooner rather than later.

The CEO of the company that built the $40 million yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily this week has blamed the crew for the tragedy — saying they had 16 minutes and could have easily saved the seven who died.

“The boat suffered a series of indescribable, unreasonable errors,” Giovanni Costantino, CEO of the Italian Sea Group, told Reuters of the Bayesian sinking Monday, killing seven of the 22 onboard.

“The impossible happened on that boat … but it went down because it took on water. From where, the investigators will tell,” he said.

Blaming the crew for the “incredible mistake” of not being prepared for the storm, he said: “This is the mistake that cries out for vengeance.”

Costantino, whose company includes Perini Navi, the Italian high-end yacht maker that built the 183-foot superyacht in 2008, staunchly defended its construction — saying it had survived far more extreme storms during 22 years of trouble-free navigation.

Instead, he expressed horror that the crew was unable to save the seven who died — including the Bayesian’s owner, British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, and his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah.

He said the crew had a 16-minute window before the craft sank — plenty of time to get everyone to safety.

“The torture lasted 16 minutes,” he told the Financial Times.

“It went down, not in one minute as some scientists have said. It went down in 16 minutes. You can see it from the charts, from the AIS [Automatic Identification System] tracking chart,” he said.

Additionally, doors and hatches should have been closed, and the keel should have been lowered to increase stability, among other safety measures, Costantino said.

Had correct procedures been followed, all passengers would have gone back to sleep after one hour, “and the next morning they would have happily resumed their wonderful cruise,” he added.

“The captain should have prepared the boat and put it in a state of alert and of safety.”

“Ask yourself — why were none of the Porticello fishermen out that night? A fisherman checks the conditions and a ship doesn’t? The disturbance was completely readable on all the weather maps. It was impossible not to know,” he said.

A mission impossible made possible by steeler yachts..

With the Steeler 50TA realized a go anywhere semi-planing yacht with a green touch.

Customers with high demands are the clientele of Steeler Yachts from Steenwijk. Time and again, however, very special wishes are put to the shipyard, combined with specifications that at first seem insoluble.

For example, the German couple who are in the final stages of their professional lives ready to realise a dream. Actually, a multiple of dreams. To sail a luxuriously equipped 50 foot boat over the Rhine and Moselle, then across France via Marseille to the Mediterranean.

This set of requirements alone presented two main challenges for the builders.

On the one hand, sufficient engine power to be able to navigate the Rhine uphill without any problems – regardless of the speed of commercial vessels. Original quote from the customer: “If I see the Cologne Cathedral half an hour to starboard, something is wrong!

On the other hand, navigating the French canals and tunnels with a 15 m vessel requires three essential prerequisites: As shallow a draught as possible, a maximum height of 3.50 meters above the waterline and no more than 5 meters in width, which is required for the numerous locks.

But the challenges for the Steeler design and development team became even more extensive:

From Marseille, the route was to go past Gibraltar via Casablanca to the Canary Islands. Then from Gran Canaria to the Cape Verde Islands for a final stopover.

And to crown the trip: departure in Mindelo on the Cape Verde Islands and – after about 2,100 nautical miles non-stop across the North Atlantic – arrival in Barbados in the Caribbean.

In order to achieve the required cruising range, the fuel tank capacity was increased to 5000 liters, but more impressive is the innovative use of a “Wingit-Kite-Boat-System”. This towing kite uses the wind energy in a fuel-saving way and in essence offers the first 4 or 5 knots of speed free of diesel consumption.

For a safe passage of the Atlantic complete redundancy of all technical systems was required and a beam radar, night vision devices, double radio systems, satellite telephone and other state-of-the-art equipment for a carefree crossing.

The yacht named  “KarMa ViDa”, is the first custom-built yacht of a new Steeler generation of unlimited possibilities.

Designed as a semi-planing yacht, the hull is made of steel, combined with a weight-saving aluminium superstructure.

Technical data: Twin Volvo Penta D8-600 (total power 883 kw/1,200 hp), shaft drive with Dynamic Position System, hydraulic bow and stern thruster and a  Magnus-Master stabilisation system.

The Steeler 50TA will officially be presented for the first time at Hiswa 2023 in Lelystad.
