Captain of Mike Lynch’s yacht is being investigated for manslaughter, lawyer says

A rescue boat in the water

Italian authorities are investigating the captain of the yacht Bayesian for his role in its sinking last week in Sicily, which led to the death of UK tech tycoon Mike Lynch and six others , according to one of the lawyers involved.

James Cutfield, the New Zealand-citizen captain of the luxury vessel, is being investigated for manslaughter and for negligent shipwreck, one of his lawyers confirmed in a message.

The investigation does not imply any guilt or negligence by the captain, but it is a formal step needed for the prosecutors investigating the events to continue the probe.

The victims of the Bayesian sinking were likely either asleep or tried to escape as Lynch’s yacht went down in minutes during bad weather,  prosecutors in Sicily  said on Saturday. Deputy prosecutor Raffaele Cammarano told reporters Cutfield had been “very cooperative” in answering questions.

Details on what happened to the victims aren’t fully clear, Cammarano said last week. Prosecutors have said they are limited in what they can communicate to the press lest it prejudice the investigation.

Of the 22 passengers in the boat, 15 were rescued on Aug. 19. Besides Lynch, Morgan Stanley International chair Jonathan Bloomer was among the  victims found dead .

Riva Yacht HQ and Shipyard, La Spezia, by MMAA

The remodelling and expansion of Riva Yacht’s headquarters and shipyard in La Spezia has just been completed to a design by Studio Manfroni e Associati di La Spezia (MMAA). The historic boatbuilder – which had its origins in the sleek motorboats designs of Carlo Riva – is now part of the Ferretti Group, with a range that runs from the iconic Aquariva series through to bespoke Superyachts in the 50m + category.

A new home for Riva Yacht

The company divides its production between two key sites, the original shipyard in Sarnico, just outside Bergamo on the shores of Lake Iseo. This facility originally opened in 1842 by Carlo Riva’s great grandfather, and was the nexus of wooden-hulled motorboat production from the 1950s onwards.

This is Riva Yachts’ other production facility in La Spezia, originally opened in 2004 to cater for the far larger boats built under the Riva name after the Ferretti acquisition in 2000, adding it to a portfolio that includes Mochi Craft, Custom Line, Pershing, Itama, and CRN Yachts.

Riva HQ and Shipyard, La Spezia, by MMAA

MMAA have expanded their original design for the site with two new large structures facing the sea, adding a suite of offices and showrooms, as well as a new winter garden overlooking the sea. The two new buildings are connected by a bridge across the docks.

Riva HQ and Shipyard, La Spezia, by MMAA

The site itself runs to over 32,000 square metres and required extensive work to re-shape the coast to accommodate the docks and a special lift basin. This stretch of the Ligurian Riveria is home to many shipyards, including Sanlorenzo Yachts and the Italian Sea Group.

Riva HQ and Shipyard, La Spezia, by MMAA

All the workspaces have a direct view onto the water, with the two covered docks allowing boats to be serviced throughout the year. One is given over to the final stages of production, fitting out completed hulls, whereas the other is more of a showroom, featuring finished boats for sale. Riva’s signature script, deep blues and aquamarines are prominently deployed.

Riva HQ and Shipyard, La Spezia, by MMAA

Mario Manfroni established his studio in 1986. The firm has extensive maritime experience, building marinas as well as shipyards and other industrial projects. Riva Yachts’ most recent launches were the Riva 88’ Folgore and Riva 110’ Dolcevita, the latter a substantial superyacht with five guest cabins, a far cry from the compact Aquaramas of the 1960s.

Ancona, December 11, 2023 – Ferretti Group continues to grow, not only in terms of turnover but also of production capacity and efficiency.   In a solemn ceremony attended by representatives of institutions and authorities from the shipbuilding and maritime sector, the new Ferretti Group Superyacht Yard was inaugurated today in Ancona.   The ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Authorities and Ferretti Group CEO Alberto Galassi officially opened this new area in the Superyacht Yard, which is now ready to become an important strategic and operating hub . The building located in Via Enrico Mattei has been extensively refurbished to create a modern, functional environment that will be the new home of the management team, the design and planning office, and the entire department dedicated to aluminium and steel boats.   “2023 is an important year for us, one packed with new developments and even more growth: the dual listing in Milan and Hong Kong, the Ravenna shipyard acquisition and today, here in Ancona, a new space that speaks to the future and to italian luxury,” said Ferretti Group CEO Alberto Galassi. “This new area, which completes the Ferretti Group Superyacht Yard, is another step forward for our research into technology and style. It is where our employees will find the ideal environment to fully express their outstanding skills, and where our owners can come to choose the most beautiful boats in the world. Because this is where the dreams of yachting enthusiasts come true.”   The area extends across a total of 4,200 square metres, of which 3,000 sqm of office space, and will be home to the technical office, project managers, project architects, the purchasing office, planning and control, logistics, production management, the construction project engineer and the boat foremen, as well as a spacious, elegant reception area for customers.   The new spaces, the result of work to extend and redevelop an existing building and the Ancona shipbuilding district, take their inspiration from the prestigious boats built by Ferretti Group. The design of the interiors reflects the approach to customisation applied to the yachts, starting with the materials used, such as fine leather, wood and marble. Each space is personalised and loving care is lavished on every single detail, from the hand rails to the model boat display cases.   The Ancona shipyard, which covers a total surface area of over 80,000 square metres , is designed for the construction of pleasure vessels up to 90 metres in length. This expansion is a key milestone in consolidating the Ferretti Group Superyacht Yard as a strategic multi-brand yacht construction hub. It’s where Ferretti Group builds CRN super and megayachts, the entire Custom Line range, Riva yachts over 50 metres and Pershing 140 units.   The shipyard vaunts a 670-tonne travel-lift, used to launch steel and aluminium yachts up to 50 metres in length. Completing the production site are nine industrial sheds in which up to 24 superyachts can be built in parallel . These modern high-tech sheds all feature state-of-the-art air-extraction, compressed-air and centralised technical-gas systems, heating and power-generation systems, and two overhead cranes for handling and installing materials on board.   The stretch of water that opens out in front is a unique space and a precious resource – a gateway to the Adriatic and a private tourist marina to full effect. Extending 250 metres along the coast, it provides large berths for fitting out and finishing up to 15 superyachts at once, and for tests and inspections through to the delivery of each pleasure boat and superyacht.   On the sustainability and environmental front, a modern tri-generation plant has been producing electric, heat and cooling power for a number of years now at the Ferretti Group Superyacht Yard in Ancona .

Learn More About Riva And Find Your Next Boat

Riva Boatyards was established in Sarnico, Italy in the year 1842.  The beginning of the legend of Riva Yachts was all due to one man, Pietro Riva; a young shipbuilder and craftsman. He performed a unique miracle by repairing most of the crafts that a sudden and devastating storm damaged throughout. By doing so, he won over the trust of all the locals. Riva gained tremendous respect and recognition, and the boatyard flourished. In the 1950’s, Carlo Riva, who had been driven by the family business ever since he was a young child. By this time, everyone who knew about yachting, knew Riva Yachts and the elegance and perfection that they brought to the ocean. Riva’s creations became the desire for award winning athletes, successful businessmen and even movie stars. Continued...

How Riva Became The Ultimate Italian Luxury Yacht Brand

These beautiful boats have been favored by everyone from Sophia Loren to George Clooney.

Riva Yachts Promo 2

Riva has always been at the top of the Richter Scale of cool. The wooden Italian speedboats ooze glamour and sophistication, especially when they were so famously owned and graced by the likes of Brigitte Bardot, Alain Delon, Sophia Loren, and power duo Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor–the mid-century equivalent of Jay-Z and Beyoncé.

Even today, the myth of Riva isn’t just era defining, it’s place defining. To illustrate this, is it possible to picture St. Tropez without sun worshipers celebrating on a Riva boat, or can Lake Como be complete without George Clooney plying its waters in a Riva, evoking a modern day Carey Grant?

riva yachts headquarters

Beyond the irresistible jet-set imagery of the Riviera of the 1950s and ‘60s, Riva boats still command smiles and drools today with their contemporary models. And that’s the brilliance of Carlo Riva. Carlo was the great-grandson of Pietro Riva who, 177 years ago, founded the namesake company on Lake Iseo in northern Italy.

Similar to its larger and more famous brothers Lake Como and Lake Garda, the tip of Lake Iseo sits at the foot of the Alps and is surrounded on both sides by screensaver-worthy countryside, villages and vineyards. It’s a place that begs James Bond to chase villains or seduce women on something as appropriate as a shiny mahogany speedboat.

Here in the town of Sarnico, Carlo followed in the footsteps of his father who, after having apprenticed under the original paterfamilias, slowly transitioned Riva from a maker of transportation and passenger craft to pleasure and power craft.

When it was his turn to take the helm, however, Carlo broke with tradition and transformed the small family business of made-to-order powerboats into a global industrialized powerhouse. He did this by looking to the American company Chris-Craft, emulating its processes, but also taking it a step further.

At the time, Chris-Craft was the Cadillac of runabouts – they defined a product and a style. They were handsome, powerful, reliable, and attainable by the burgeoning upper middle class. If Chris-Craft was to Cadillac, it seemed, then Riva would be to Ferrari.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B2pGXmkl2mx

Carlo was very perceptive to the growing demands of a post-war Europe flush with prosperity, and excelled at capturing the collective zeitgeist. He knew there was a market for his vision and so with the boldness of a Caesar, he took a massive risk and built a new ultramodern (not to mention incredibly cool) boatyard on the lake shore – a working monument that still serves as the company’s headquarters today.

Although Carlo implemented a modern assembly-line approach to Riva boatbuilding – a process that changed the fortunes and the future of the company, he never sacrificed the family’s legendary attention to detail (such as aligning every screwhead horizontally, for example).

Even more significant, Carlo became a leader in marine design and application, making his boats not just practical and beautiful but also innovative. This melding of state-of-the-art methods with old-world craftsmanship, combined with Carlo’s innate mastery of image building, propelled Riva to almost immediate international prestige.

As the Italians do so well, Carlo was able to imbue his brand with an intangible essence that evoked all that was desirable. A Riva wasn’t just a luxury boat, it was a lifestyle statement that represented the epitome of la dolce vita. To own a Riva was to live the good life.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B2R07RlFidv

In keeping with Carlo’s vision, Riva continues to embrace the latest in modern technology when it comes to building its boats today, with a model line that has grown to include personal speedboats as well as seaworthy yachts. Just as important, Riva also maintains its fastidious attention to detail and infuses each craft with a uniquely Italian spirit.

The signature visual features of a Riva boat and, by extension, the Riva brand are the strips of polished mahogany covering the bow and stern (still finished with 22 hand-applied coats of special glossy sealant) and the famous Riva turquoise blue upholstery. The mahogany details are still present in modern Rivas, although most now sport other upholstery colors than turquoise. Nevertheless, this proprietary shade of seafoam blue is as intertwined with the brand as rosso corsa is with Ferrari.

To visit the boatyard in Sarnico is a pilgrimage in the motoring world, especially for those obsessed with this iconic brand – like me. Treating my special invitation like a golden ticket, I arrived at this hallowed space floating on a cloud. Even more fortunate, it was a Sunday morning when the facility was closed and I was getting a personal tour from the company’s resident historian.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B2PFQUegFbd

“Here is the first Aquarama,” he says, pointing to the most legendary of all Riva models. “This is Serafino Riva’s (Carlo’s dad) first racing boat, that’s the Aquariva by Marc Newson, and this is the boat done in collaboration with Ferrari.”

As I’m led from room to room, the weight of history only increases and so does my appreciation. “This is where the carpenters carve the mahogany panels, this is where fiberglass components are made, over here in this engine bay are boats nearing completion…”

Riva

But the holy of holies was the personal office of Carlo Riva. Designed by him to resemble the bridge of a ship, the spacious room occupies the uppermost floor of the building and is accessed by spiral stairs of gleaming mahogany. Jutting out above the water, the room is lined with massive windows overlooking the lake – where Carlo could personally see every new boat leaving the factory – and the floor is made of heavily worn, polished wood rescued from an antique ship, complete with rust marks left by the old iron nails.

There’s an ancient ship’s wheel and a large brass engine telegraph (the instrument that has a lever pointing to “full, half, slow,” etc.). Not surprisingly, fabric pillows in the famous Riva blue color line a sofa, stacks of Riva books line the shelves, and the maestro’s long, wide desk sits in the corner surveying the room.

riva yachts headquarters

This handsome command post is supposedly just as he left it. And what’s impressive is that it casually effuses that intangible Riva style – retrospective but modern, high-design but warm, masculine but elegant, thematic but not kitsch. In a word, it’s perfectly balanced – like some form of Italian feng shui.

My private tour inevitably ended but my interest was only heightened. What’s that I hear? I’m welcome to return anytime to have a further look behind the scenes, and an Aquariva had been scheduled to take me an hour up the lake to lunch?

The rain that had been falling outside was starting to let up. As I left Sarnico I could’ve sworn that as I looked back I saw a rainbow in the sky and it fell on the Riva boatworks.

NEW OPERATIONAL HEADQUARTERS OFFICIALLY OPENED TODAY: ANOTHER STEP FORWARD IN THE STRATEGIC EXPANSION OF THE FERRETTI GROUP SUPERYACHT YARD IN ANCONA.

Ferretti Group continues to grow, not only in terms of turnover but also of production capacity and efficiency.

Because this is where the dreams of yachting enthusiasts come true.”

The area  extends across a total of 4,200 square metres, of which 3,000 sqm of office space, and will be home to the technical office, project managers, project architects, the purchasing office, planning and control, logistics, production management, the construction project engineer and the boat foremen, as well as a spacious, elegant reception area for customers.

Boat of the Week: How This Historic 100-Foot Mini-Superyacht Was Restored Into a Retro Masterpiece

The Superyacht that Carlo Riva designed for himself and bought

Hear the name Carlo Riva and it’s hard not to conjure-up images of a mirror-varnished Riva Aquarama, with a young Brigitte Bardot or Sophia Loren lounging on the back, soaking-up the St. Tropez sun. While the legendary Italian boat builder will always be indelibly linked to the oh-so-sexy Aquarama, it’s a much grander yacht from Riva’s drawing board that, for the past 40 years, has been spinning the heads of yachting aficionados as fast as any Aquarama.

Back in the late ’70s, Riva, working with the Italian yard CRN, designed a 100-foot mini-superyacht he called Vespucci . Launched in 1978, he loved the boat so much he kept her for himself, using it for long family vacations and as a floating billboard for the Riva brand.

What set this sleek, white-hulled beauty apart was the striking design of its pilothouse. Those dramatic, green-tinted, reverse-angle windows—said to have been inspired by Riva’s futuristic office at the original Riva yard on Lake Iseo in northern Italy—were unique to Vespucci . And they were never again replicated by the designer.

Like the pilothouse, the slender displacement hull was also a work of art. From that soaring bow with its wave-deflecting scalloped sections, to the elegant transom, to those long, racy exterior side exhausts, the shape screamed performance.

Yet despite her sleek lines, Vespucci was never intended to be a go-fast boat. Powered by twin, low-revving 435 hp Caterpillar diesels, her top speed was a stately 12.5 knots, with an economical 10-knot cruise.

We don’t know for sure how long Carlo Riva kept Vespucci before selling—it’s thought three or four years. She went on to change hands a couple more times before coming on the market again in 2016. That’s when passionate Riva enthusiast and real estate investor Philippe Gillion and his wife, Miene, stepped in. They were on the hunt for a classic-looking yacht and came across the very run-down Vespucci .

By 2016, when Philippe and Miene Gillion purchased her, Vespucci was in rough shape. But instead of gutting the interior, the couple had everything replaced or restored to its original state.  Northrop & Johnson

Knowing the yacht needed more than a quick makeover, they committed to an exhaustive and hugely expensive, 18-month restoration with refit specialists Monaco Marine, at the company’s Antibes yard on France’s Cote d’Azur.

Vespucci’s Captain Benjamin Calzaroni said that Philippe Gillion had first fallen in love with Vespucci as a wide-eyed 10-year-old. Visiting Monaco Boat Service, a Riva agent, with his Aquarama-owning father in 1978, Philippe gazed longingly at a scale display model of the newly launched motoryacht in the showroom window.

“He never forgot Vespucci and here was the opportunity to own her,” Calzaroni told Robb Report . “Initially, the owner had many ideas to change the boat. But he quickly decided it was important to preserve the spirit of Carlo Riva and his design.”

The elegant shape, even from above, shows Carlo Riva’s touch in designing soft curves into his yachts.  Northrop & Johnson

The restoration included plenty of fundamental improvements, like re-plating considerable portions of Vespucci’s steel hull, replacing almost 900 feet of corroded steel pipes and miles of wiring, adding new teak decks, and rebuilding the aging Caterpillar engines.

Below decks, the Gillions’s priority was preserving as much of the Carlo Riva-designed furniture as possible. Workers spent endless hours removing and then restoring all those hull-side portholes, revarnishing the elegant woodwork, and rebuilding the delicate Riva-designed lights and switches. The operative word was restoration rather than replacement.

One of the biggest upgrades was a reconfiguration of the flybridge to offer more outdoor seating. Expandable tables were designed to provide additional dining options.

The beautiful flybridge helm, with its original spoked, stainless-steel wheel, and simple gauges set beneath a stainless, porthole-style cover, look the same as when Carlo Riva took delivery of the yacht.

The refit also included new electronics and navigation gear, plus a repaint in that brilliant white, with Riva’s original color scheme of bright red bottom-paint with an aquamarine waterline stripe. “Today she is just a wonderful yacht to cruise aboard,” says Calzaroni. “She is very stable, comfortable at sea, and extremely well-built. Bad weather is not a problem for her.”

Since her completion in 2018, Vespucci has split her time between cruising the Med with the Gillion family aboard, and being a busy charter yacht, with space for up to 10 guests in four staterooms. “She is a true piece of history. Everywhere she goes, people are taking pictures, stopping to take a look, wanting to know about her,” says Calzaroni. “There are plenty of classic yachts around, but Vespucci is truly unique.”

Riva 68 Diable Review

  • By Phil Draper
  • February 11, 2022

Riva 68 Diable

This latest creation is not Riva’s first Diable, the French word for “devil.” There was one predecessor: the Riva 50 Diable. A forerunner of the 51 Turborosso, the old Diable sports cruiser was in production from 1984 to 1989. Reflecting the styles of the times, it had a chunky, angular design with a squared-off transom and an arch mast. Riva built 31 hulls. One of them was the first Riva that I ever went aboard.

That was a different experience than going aboard today’s Riva 68 Diable, which is the biggest model to be built at Riva’s Sarnico headquarters on Italy’s Lake Iseo. Hull No. 1 has a modern, shark-gray metallic hull and cockpit moldings, a bright black-metallic superstructure, and a jaunty Riva-blue boot top. It’s a popular Riva scheme, although plenty of other color combinations are possible.

The hardtop is mostly carbon fiber, has a sunroof, and covers the forward half of the cockpit. For air circulation, there are air gaps between the top of the wraparound windshield and the roof section. There’s also a double-height windshield and a reverse-rake corner forward, where the windshield meets the deck. All these features also help to elongate the 68 Diable’s profile.

A pantograph-framed canvas awning protects most of the aft deck when desired. The whole space forms one big, open main-deck lounge, effectively seamless from the swim platform through to the helm console. As with the smaller Dolceriva and Rivale hardtops, the 68 Diable incorporates air-conditioning ducts, but there’s still plenty of headroom beneath—at least 6 feet, 6 inches. The cockpit furniture that isn’t optional is symmetrical on each side of a central corridor. Two L-shaped sofas extend along each side, with a dining table to port (this table could be specified to starboard instead, or on both sides). On Hull No. 1, this table is mahogany and inlaid with the Riva logo. It’s on a pedestal than can rise or drop at the flick of a switch, creating a day bed. A pop-up TV is abaft the observer bench to starboard.

Riva 68 Diable

The foredeck has several sofas and sun-lounging space. There’s another sofa at the transom, as well as a sun pad atop the tender garage, which accommodates a Williams Sportjet 345 and at least one Seabob. The hydraulic swim platform drops down on a slope and reveals more steps for water access. Several other current Rivas provide the same neat solution.

Standard in the engine room are twin 1,550 hp MAN V-12 diesels, which Riva says will deliver a top speed around 37 knots and a 33-knot fast cruise. The yacht I got aboard had the bigger 1,650 hp MAN V-12 motors, which topped out comfortably at just over 38 knots with a heavy load during my time aboard in September. Riva quotes a 40-knot maximum with these engines at one-third load.

At a fast cruise of around 34 knots, and with those diesels humming contentedly at around 2,000 rpm, fuel burn was 132 gallons per hour, which equates to a cruising time of 7.6 hours and a range of almost 260 nautical miles. Drop the engines down 400 rpm and level out at 26 knots, and that range spins out by another 50 nautical miles, adding two hours to the total run time.

Riva 68 Diable

The driving position is great. The helm console has a Simrad Command platform. Owners can choose a single 16-inch multifunction display or an optional second screen, as was aboard this 68 Diable. All the engine data is well-presented on a wide-screen display from Boening.

Handling is as responsive and precise as it can be aboard a machine that, fully ladened, weighs in at almost 100,000 pounds. This hull had the optional Seakeeper NG9 gyrostabilizer in standby mode during speed runs but left the Humphree dynamic trim system active. Happily, the 68 Diable also came with the optional Xenta joystick controls, which, in addition to easing dockside maneuvering, make for easy twist-of-the-wrist course adjustments when cruising. The optional dynamic-positioning system also makes station-keeping a cinch alongside a fuel dock or while waiting for a bridge to open.

Riva decor is always a treat. There are varnished mahogany highlights, polished stainless steel, stitched leatherwork and more: The looped handles on the stateroom doors have been used aboard Riva cruisers for something like 50 years. Even the inside of Riva’s closets are high-gloss veneers.

The standard veneers throughout the yacht are reconstructed—or “rigatoni”—wenge, which look fabulous, but the upgraded rosewood has a more luxurious striped grain and seemingly even more depth to the varnish. If you prefer a lighter and brighter vibe, there’s also a gray-and-white matte oak alternative.

Riva 68 Diable

Belowdecks are an amidships galley to port with a fridge/freezer, cooktop and dishwasher, as well as a lounge with a dinette to starboard. There are three staterooms with hullside-window views. The owner’s stateroom is down a few steps and aft with a forward-facing double berth and an en suite head to port, abaft a sliding door with separate stalls for the toilet and shower. The VIP stateroom is in the bow with an en suite head. A day head to starboard serves the twin-berth guest stateroom. There is also crew space for one, with a separate shower stall, accessed beneath the cockpit sofa.

Riva’s 68 Diable is a feisty addition to the builder’s Open portfolio, incorporating the best of what the brand is known for while adding something new too.

Sound Investment

Riva has striven over the years to reduce sound and vibration levels on all its yachts. At around 30 knots, the 68 Diable’s decibels just about everywhere rarely get above the mid-80 range, about the same level of noise as a lawn mower. At a 10-knot chug, I measured 74 decibels at the helm and 70 to 72 decibels in the master stateroom. That’s the equivalent of a hair dryer or dishwasher.

Bigger Models

While the smaller Rivas are built well inland on Lake Iseo in Northern Italy, the bigger Rivas—from the 76 Perseo Super up to the 110 Dolcevita—are fitted out at Riva’s facility on the west coast in La Spezia. The all-new composite trideck Riva 130, the first of the models expected to launch in 2022, and all the biggest metal Rivas are built at Riva Superyachts in Ancona.

Stirred, Not Shaken

The 68 Diable has custom racking and drawer inserts for cutlery, chinaware, glassware, wine bottles and galley utensils. All stow beautifully. My favorite example aboard the 68 Diable is in the cockpit. Open a cupboard door, and there are two Perspex pullout shelves; the lower one houses a half-dozen cocktail glasses, and the upper has a polished, stainless-steel Alessi cocktail shaker and accessories.
