Plymouth's Princess Yachts reveals record billion dollar order book

UK's largest luxury boat builder says it is selling yachts faster than it can make them as it recovers strongly from Covid hit 2020

The UK’s largest luxury boat builder Princess Yachts has revealed a US$1bn order book and said production is struggling to keep up with demand.

The Plymouth manufacturer’s financial update has revealed a “record-setting commercial performance” with sales rate surpassing production rate, driving record low distributor stock levels.

It said almost all production through to the end of 2022 and more than 60% of 2023 production is already covered by orders. This year it has already sold 20 of its flagship Superfly X95 and has 57 orders for the new Y72 model which launched this summer.

The company is now poised for further growth with the new Y95, X80,and V50 already in production, as well as five further new model launches by the end of 2022.

And, despite being in a Covid-19 recovery phase, intensive recruitment continues with increased investment in skills training and award-winning apprenticeship programmes.

The firm, which employs about 3,200 people in Plymouth, said it has faced challenges from the Covid-19 pandemic and the ongoing supply chain issues affecting the UK. Turnover and profits dipped in 2020 as the company was affected by a temporary Covid-related closure.

But it has bounced back strongly and despite ongoing challenges retail sales have grown to the highest levels in the history of the company, with an order book exceeding US$bn.

With record low distributor stock levels globally - equivalent to one to two weeks of stock - and production almost completely covered by orders into the second half of 2023, the company said it is in a unique commercial position.

Antony Sheriff, Princess Yachts executive chairman and chief executive, said: “As expected, in a Covid-19 year when we stood down our 3,200 strong team for Q2 2020, turnover reduced to £244m from 2019’s full year turnover of £314m.

“The combination of our unique vertically integrated manufacturing process, the investment required to make it Covid-19 compliant and our decision to not cut new product development or make staff redundant resulted in an understandable drop in profits during 2020.

“However, these decisions have put us in an excellent position during 2021 and onwards. Although Covid-19 continues to bring interruptions in the supply chain and government mandated self-isolation of staff, we significantly improved financial performance in 2021 compared to 2019 and 2020 and we expect even stronger results in 2022 .”

He added: “We continue to move forwards with an ambitious new product launch plan and innovative new ways to engage with our customers . The company now has a retail order book worth over US$1bn with the sales success of new models such as the X95, X80 and Y72 exceeding expectations. We have had over 20 orders for the X95, and 57 orders for the new Y72 model, the majority of these orders received off plan. All production slots are now filled for 2021, over 95% of 2022 production and over 60% of 2023 production is covered by orders.”

Operating loss of £30m for Princess Yachts

Princess Yachts made an operating loss before exceptional costs of £30m in 2022, with a revenue of £315.2m.

The company’s accounts show a loss before tax of £43.3m and an EBITDA loss of £25.7m.

However, the boatbuilder says there is a solid order book and this, together with new financial and operational support from KPS Capital Partners will provide the opportunity to form a foundation to move forward and expand the Princess brand.

In his strategic report, CEO Will Green points out there was a surge in demand across its range in 2021, tempered by a backdrop of unprecedented supply chain disruptions that led to loss of volume and inefficient build of yachts. The supply chain disruption continued in 2022.

In November 2022, the directors and shareholders entered into an agreement with KPS to secure investment.

The transaction was concluded in March 2023 with an equity / cash injection of £53.7m, however during this period, manufacturing operations were adversely affected.

Despite challenging operational performance, the product strategy has continued with three new boats launched in 2022 and a further three planned for each of 2023 and 2024.

Total product development in 2022 was £14.7m, with the boatbuilder saying continued intensity will help it grow global market share in the 35ft to 100ft category.

Initiatives

As at July 2023, the deposited order book is in excess of £750m, stretching into 2025.

Princess Yachts continues to carry on with its sustainability initiatives, focusing on hull efficiency and space efficiency.

Improvements in hull efficiency have exceeded 20% from one generation to the next.

The boatbuilder is also experimenting with alternative, more sustain materials in the fit out of the boats as well as improvements in the footprint of producing boats.

Other external factors continue to be monitored, including the Russia / Ukraine war and the impact of the UK’s inflation.

Princess Yachts addresses its future after huge losses

P lymouth’s Princess Yachts has insisted its future remains bright despite posting a £69m pre-tax loss. The company blamed inflation and supply chain issues which meant it couldn't build as many boats.

But the luxury boat maker stressed it had orders to manufacture more than £750m of vessels. The Stonehouse-headquartered firm has already received deposits for these boats and said the work will stretch through 2025 and into 2026.

Nevertheless, Princess Yachts (Holdings) Ltd, in its newly published accounts for 2022, described the year as “disappointing”. It saw revenue drop by £22.8m, a 7.3% decline, to £289.6m and its loss, even before exceptional costs were taken out, deepened by £27.5m.

The company described sales as “healthy”, however, and pointed to demand continuing to outstrip supply. But it stressed that major disruption to the supply chain severely impacted production resulting in a negative EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation) for the first time since 2020.

This fell by £25.9m to a deficit of £12.6m. The overall pre-tax loss was £69.3m, a huge increase on the £19.2m loss it made in 2021.

Princess Yachts said 2022 started with major disruption to its supply chain which severely impacted its ability to return to “stable and efficient production levels”. It mainly had problems getting hold of large components such as engines, generators, electrical panels and air conditioning equipment, which in many cases arrived several months late and even halted production lines.

Will Green, Princess Yachts’ new chief executive, said: “2022 was, operationally, a difficult year for Princess with major disruptions to our supply chain significantly affecting our ability to deliver the planned boat volumes. This was especially disappointing as, commercially, we continued to enjoy strong sales and as a result, a very healthy order book that stretches into 2026 for some models.”

The company, which employs more than 3,000 people, was taken over by New York-based KPS Capital Partners in March 2023. The acquisition impacted the 2022 and first-quarter 2023 financial results as Princess Yachts went through the sale.

However, KPS injected a significant amount of cash into the company to help unlock some of the supply chain and capacity issues. It has also approved a multi-million pound investment into the expansion of the South Yard facility.

Princess Yachts said the support from the American firm “provides a sound foundation to move forward through the second half of 2023”and will enable it to accelerate a range of “growth and operational initiatives”. Princess Yachts stressed that strong investment in updating its product range has driven much of its commercial success and product development remains the strategic focus in 2024 and 2025.

Six new models were launched in 2022, three new models in 2023 and a further four have now been announced for 2024. The company said its decision to continue to invest in new products throughout the uncertainty of the Covid pandemic has been rewarded with continued commercial growth and a forward order book that stretches beyond 2025 for several models.

The company increased its product development spend to £14.4m, from £11.6m in 2022 and said this will help it maintain and grow its global market leadership in the 40-100ft yacht market. It said the new F65 model, unveiled at the 2022 Southampton Boat Show, had almost 70 pre-orders before launch.

Mr Green added: “The fresh financial and operational support from our new owners will now help us build upon this order book and 2023 has focused on building the operational infrastructure to support this commercial success with increased volumes and the quality standards our customers demand.

“We believe we have the strongest product range in the industry today and maintaining that strength is a key focus of ours and that of our shareholders going forward. With the operational expertise that KPS brings, I am confident we can build a very successful future for Princess and for the family of distributors, suppliers and employees that support us”.

Britain’s largest luxury yacht builder has been bought by a us-based private equity firm  ….

Plymouth-based Princess Yachts , the UK's largest luxury boatbuilder, has been sold to KPS Capital Partners, a US-based private equity firm. L Catterton, the previous private equity owner, put Princess up for sale in 2022 and reportedly hired bankers at Macquarie to find a buyer. In February 2023, Princess confirmed that KPS had entered into a definitive agreement to acquire a controlling equity interest in the business.

KPS is a New York-based private equity giant with approximately $14.4 billion of capital under management, as of September 2022. It makes controlling equity investments in manufacturing companies in North America and Europe. In 2019, KPS acquired the fitness equipment business of Brunswick Corporation, including the Life Fitness brand, for $490 million in cash.

Existing shareholders will retain ownership in Princess, with the transaction expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2023. Princess had previously announced expansion plans in the South West region of the UK, as part of the successful bid by Plymouth city council to create a freeport. The company believes that the new investment from KPS will help support these plans and reinforce the unique national and international marine capabilities that reside in Plymouth and the wider region.

The Princess business was founded in 1965 and distributes through a 50-strong global network. It had been backed by L Catterton and its predecessor entity since 2008. KPS's investment in Princess will accelerate the company's growth trajectory and fund numerous investments for its future. Princess Yachts acquired by KPS Capital Partners

The majority of Princess Yachts shares have been acquired by US private equity firm, KPS Capital Partners. The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2023.

KPS Capital Partners manages KPS Special Situations Funds, a group of investment funds with more than $14.4bn of assets (as of September 30th, 2022). Its portfolio of companies has average annual revenues of around $22bn.

“ KPS’ investment will accelerate Princess’ growth trajectory and fund numerous investments for its future,” said Ryan Harrison, partner, KPS Mid-Cap Investments.

“ We look forward to working with Princess’ existing stockholders, CEO Antony Sheriff, the senior leadership team and the talented employee base at Princess Yachts.”

Plymouth-based Princess Yachts (pictured) currently operates five shipyards with over 3,200 employees in the UK. Existing shareholders will still maintain ownership stakes in the company.

Sheriff said he was pleased with the acquisition and excited about the future prospects of the company.

“With a current order book nearing a record $1bn and many model lines sold into 2025, we have never been in a stronger commercial position,”   said Sheriff.

Princess Yachts reveals record financial results

The Plymouth-based yard broke several records in 2018, with its financial results, yacht sales and employment levels at an all-time high

Booming yacht sales led to record financial results at Princess Yachts in 2018, according to the yard’s latest financial results, which were released last week (May 30).

Both the turnover of £340million (up 24% year-on-year) and operating profit of £30million (up 173% year-on-year) are new records for Princess, while its £700million of forward orders stretch into 2020.

The yard’s employment drive has continued, with 3,200 people now on staff (50% more than after its 2016 restructuring ) with recruitment taking place across the board, from design to manufacturing, engineering to management.

Apprentices continue to play a key part in Princess’s success – 40 new apprentices started in 2018, and a 100% retention rate after qualification means that 4% of its workforce are former apprentices.

Their focus and dedication enabled Princess to build on the previous two years of solid financial figures and beat 2017’s record results. The luxury British yacht company says it’s on the crest of a wave as it launches new range

Luxury British yacht company Princess Yachts Ltd has exceeded $1bn (£750m) in revenues as orders for the first time in its 53-year history. The L Catterton -owned company also announced financial results for 2017 were a record turnover of £274.4m, with an Operating Profit of £7.9m.

Executive chairman Antony Sheriff announced in London that Princess had seen exceptional sales at last year's Cannes, Fort Lauderdale and Düsseldorf boat shows , and plans to capitalise on its success in 2018 and 2019 with multiple new yacht launches, building the company's fleet to a total of 23.The Plymouth-based company has also hired more than 500 staff members to keep up with the manufacturer's growth, including creating a robust internship programme.

“This has been a landmark year in the history of Princess. We have a clear vision to be the highest quality, most innovative and best luxury yacht producer in the world and it is gratifying to our highly skilled and dedicated 2,700-strong team that the market has responded in tune with our efforts," said Sheriff. Earlier this year, Princess celebrated the launch of three new models, the V50, V65 and S78, with six additional launches by the end of 2018. One of these includes the revolutionary R35, a carbon fibre sports yacht which features a world-first Active Foil System, which improves the model's fuel efficiency and hydrodynamic stability, and was developed in collaboration with BAR Technologies.

Princess Yachts Y72 Reviewed

The Gulf Stream was cranky after a 40-knot cold front had blown through the previous day, leaving a confused sea. Even so, the Princess Yachts Y72 cruised across the angry ocean at 34 knots, up sea and cross sea. There were no teeth-jarring slams—just a welcoming, soft ride. And, just as good, nary a creak or squeak from anywhere aboard.

The good sea manners of the Y72 are certainly the result of naval architect Bernard Olesinski’s background of racing powerboats in the English Channel, a body of water with even fewer benign days than the Gulf Stream. Ferrari designers Pininfarina pitched in on the yacht’s exterior lines.

The Y72’s detailing and small touches are superyacht-level, from the stitched Livorno Stone leather countertops to the redundant air-conditioning systems neatly racked in the engine room.

At the stern, a hydraulic swim platform can lift a Williams Sportjet 395 tender , and there’s a waist-level stowage locker with charging ports for Seabobs. A passerelle is hidden in the portside stairs to the aft deck, where a U-shaped dinette with a table awaits.

The galley is aft in the salon with a lifting window that opens to the cockpit. This window is the first clue that the Y72 balances an elegant interior with alfresco fun. The galley is a step down, allowing for a full-height fridge, and an aft-facing, L-shaped dinette is opposite to include cockpit guests. Forward, the salon is geared for family entertainment, with a 55-inch pop-up TV and two sofas.

The skipper is on a raised dais for unobstructed visibility, facing triple monitors that include a touchscreen Boening for all ship’s systems. This Y72 also had Garmin’s Surround View camera system , which enables 360-degree views to help with docking. The twin helm seats are very Aston Martin, with diamond stitching and headrests, and a pantograph door allows the skipper to step onto the side deck, handle lines and communicate with crewmembers. Opposite the helm is a raised settee for guests, with a swing-out table for drinks or a laptop.

Another mega-yacht feature is the private stairwell to the full-beam master stateroom. The en suite head is aft, providing an extra layer of soundproofing from the engine room. A leather-topped vanity is to port, and a love seat is opposite with hull-side windows for light and ocean views. Headroom is 6 feet, 4 inches. A dressing area has closets and dressers, while the head has twin vanities and a shower.

Throughout the Y72, design cues from its larger siblings tie the decor together, including vertical wood slat effects, walnut paneling and linen wall coverings.

Forward, via separate stairs from the salon, are the guest staterooms, including an island VIP berth in the bow with an en suite head. Two additional staterooms have twins that slide into doubles. Aft, accessed from the transom or via a deck hatch, is a crew cabin with two berths, a head and stowage.

In fact, stowage is one thing that impressed me throughout this yacht: Every cranny under sofas or berths or behind bulkheads is viable stowage.

Up on the flybridge is a dining table with a removable center section, so those seated inside can leave. A wraparound settee is opposite the twin-seat helm. A wet bar with a grill, sink, fridge and ice maker serves the area. The aft deck has a sun pad that can be replaced with a davit for a tender or a spa. Overhead on this Y72 was an optional hardtop with a louvered sunroof.

Follow the superyacht-style oval rails forward to the foredeck, and guests will find a third alfresco space, where a convertible sun pad offers bronzing or seating to encircle the dining table.

The engine room is reached via the crew quarters and through a generator flat. Inside are a pair of 22.5 kW Onan gensets (one is standard) and the hydraulics package. Room is allotted for a Seakeeper stabilizer, but the yacht I got aboard had Sleipner Vector Fins. Standard power for the Y72 is twin 1,400 hp MAN V-12 diesels. The Y72 I got aboard had optional 1,650 hp MAN diesels.

Underway, the Y72 shouldered aside the Gulf Stream with impunity, and it’s here that I found the Vector Fins particularly useful. The faster we went—up to a top speed of 34 knots—the smoother the ride. At 27 knots, the decibel meter registered 70 in the salon. That’s about the equivalent of a dishwasher.

The Princess Yachts Y72 is the smallest in the builder’s Y range, which also includes 78-, 85- and 95-foot models, but it punches angry seas far above its weight while offering owners and guests superyacht-level living inside and out.  

Seeing is Relieving

Garmin Surround View steals a page from automotive park-assist systems but goes one better. This 360-degree and bird’s-eye view uses six 1080p cameras mounted through the yacht’s hull. Feeds from those cameras are stitched into a helm display for total situational awareness when docking or maneuvering (read: no blind spots). A “bumper zone” can be set to assist the skipper, and distance markers allow skippers to make decisions easier. With full night vision, this video guidance is a breakthrough. It can also serve as a warning system against unseen objects and debris in the water.

Stable as a Table

Princess Y72 owners have a choice between the Seakeeper gyrostabilizer and Sleipner Vector stabilizing fins. There is room allotted for the Seakeeper in the generator lazarette, but the Y72 I got aboard had the Sleipner fins for full roll control, even at top speed in rough water. The curved Sleipner fins are said to be 50 percent more efficient than flat fins and are efficient at anchor. The advanced hydrodynamic fin shape has less resistance, helping to reduce fuel consumption.
