Crewing Opportunities

The cyca crewing program has been developed to assist people to connect with yacht owners and start crewing. this program is available for both individuals new to our sport and for experienced sailors. , how do i start crewing.

There are two ways to engage with the CYCA crewing program:

• You can contact the CYCA Sailing Office on 02 8292 7800 and the team will endeavor to find you a place on a yacht.
• Come down to the Club on race days – we recommend 2 hours before the start on Wednesdays in Summer and Sundays in Winter. Information on the Club’s series can be found here . Once at the Club you can approach skippers directly, approach Sailing Office staff or alternatively approach the Sailing Concierge . The Sailing Concierge can be found on the hardstand and runs each Wednesday evening throughout Summer for the Wednesday Twilights and each Sunday morning throughout Winter for the CYCA Winter Series. The Concierge will be able to direct sailors to boats looking for crew, introduce them to the owner and be able to answer any questions regarding the series a crew member may have.

We welcome all sailors, whether new or experienced and look forward to you joining us at the CYCA.

Mysail.team  provides a general availability option for use by both crew and owners who can post a notice looking for casual or regular crew across the CYCA sailing programs, as well as delivery crew opportunities.

I want to compete in the Rolex Sydney Hobart or overnight races, what opportunities are there for me?

To be invited to crew in the Blue Water Pointscore races you will normally need to have had some offshore racing experience such as the Short Ocean or Ocean Pointscore, and your chances will be enhanced if you have some or all of the following: Cat 1 or Cat 2 Offshore experience or significant delivery passages; Australian Sailing Safety and Sea Survival Certification, current Senior / Apply First Aid qualifications, and Radio Certification such as the MROCP.

Your availability to participate in the Blue Water Pointscore Series (overnight distance races around 80-180nm) will often enhance your chances of gaining a position on a crew in the major yacht races.

Opportunities available for International crew are often limited as many yachts decide on crew well ahead of time and train regularly, however having your details on file at the CYCA will certainly improve your chances.

The CYCA Sailing Office can not guarantee you a place on a yacht and does not guarantee that crew invitations will be available at regular intervals.

Cruising Yacht Club of Australia

The  Cruising Yacht Club of Australia  ( CYCA ) was established in 1944 in  Darling Point , inner-east  Sydney . The club is known as one of  Australia 's premier  yacht  clubs, and is acknowledged as one of the leaders in ocean racing in the country. The club hosts the annual Rolex  Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race .

In 2019, the CYCA celebrated the 75th anniversary of both the club and the race to Hobart, with celebrations of the event.

In October 2018, the Club finished a major makeover to its Darling Point premises, with the clubhouse renovated.

CYCA facilities include a  marina  on  Rushcutters Bay  capable of berthing yachts up to 30 metres in length and five-star function rooms and restaurants. It currently has a membership of 3,000.

Job Summary:

The Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (CYCA) is seeking an experienced photographer to join our marketing and communications team. As a photographer, you will be responsible for capturing high-quality images of sailing and racing events, as well as documenting the ambiance of the CYCA and its events.

Main Responsibilities:

• Consult with the marketing and communications team to determine photographic assignments and objectives
• Develop a shot list for photographic assignments, taking into account light and weather conditions
• Utilize advanced knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, specifically Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Premiere Pro, and Adobe Illustrator
• Employ flash photography techniques and own and demonstrate knowledge of Canon cameras and EF lenses
• Capture high-resolution imagery of sailing and racing, including key movements and actions on the racecourse, team dynamics, and action shots
• Document the ambiance of racing, including images of spectators, the venue, and scenic views of the courses
• Document the ambiance of the CYCA, including event photography, venue photography, and food photography
• Provide coverage of social events, including prizegiving, and work with social media platforms
• Capture candid shots of participants, officials, and volunteers
• Direct a boat driver to specific locations around the harbour/course venue to accomplish desirable compositions, camera angles, and so forth
• Produce a daily batch of imagery for press and social media during key event periods
• Manage the CYCA and CYCA Media photo library
• Publish photo galleries
• Tag metadata and information in the images
• Understand sailing, its history, and racing

Requirements:

• Bachelor of Visual Arts, Communications, Marketing, Business, or Sports Management degree or relevant work experience
• Current boat licence (or willingness to obtain one)

Experience and Skills:

• At least two years in a similar role, preferably within a sailing or sporting organisation
• Photography/videography and editing
• Strong digital and social media literacy and an understanding of analytic and reporting tools
• A proficiency in Microsoft Office
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Strong organisational skills and an ability to meet deadlines
• A passion for sailing or sports in general

Sailing Instructors

The NCYC Sailing Academy is a busy Australian Sailing accredited Discover Sailing Centre operating six days a week (Tuesday to Sunday).

We hold the position of Number 1 Keelboat Centre nationally and are placed in the Top 10 for our junior Tackers learn-to-sail programs.  We also offer powerboat courses and host instructor training courses.

We are actively looking for enthusiastic, customer focused and Australian Sailing qualified dinghy & keelboat instructors to join our team.

We are keenly recruiting instructors with the skills, knowledge and experience to fulfill the roles of Tackers Leader and/or Lead Keelboat Instructor (18 years+).
