The beach is back!

Residents didn’t waste any time to enjoy the “soft opening” of the Yacht Club Beach in November. CJ HADDAD

The fences are down, new sand laid, and after 400-plus days, the Cape Coral Yacht Club Beach is open.

City officials on Thursday afternoon gathered to officially declare the popular spot open to the public after Hurricane Ian just about destroyed the area a little over a year ago.

“This is a great day for our community,” said Cape Coral Mayor John Gunter. “Four hundred and eight days ago, we had almost a Category 5 hurricane hit this area. And this area of our city was the hardest hit.

“Today is great day so we can open the park up, and let our residents enjoy the beach that we do have here in Cape Coral.”

Gunter said the city would have liked to have the beach open sooner, but that having to wait on permits resulted in having to wait longer than anticipated. He said as soon as those permits were approved, city crews were ready to move in swiftly to remedy the area that was riddled with debris, including the addition of 500 tons of new sand.

Residents didn’t waste any time to enjoy the “soft opening” of the Yacht Club Beach Thursday. CJ HADDAD

“This area, in my opinion, is one of the crown jewels of the city,” Gunter added. “Our city council, as early as (Wednesday), were having discussion on next steps and what we are going to eventually rebuild here for our residents. I’m very eager to get those discussions completed so the construction can begin.”

City officials said safety was a top priority for Council when it came to reopening the Yacht Club Beach. Following the storm, boats were scatted about, the pier was just pilings, tree debris was rampant. The city was forced to demolish both pavilions, both restrooms were lost, finger piers gone.

“It looked like a war zone,” Gunter said.

City Manager Michael Ilczyszyn said vessels were sunk in the basin that needed to be hauled out, the Harbor Master’s building lost its roof, and that “it was pretty rough.”

“It’s taken the entire year with staff little-by-little clawing into here,” he said. “Before opening, we sent divers in the water to scuba dive the entire thing to make sure if anyone went into the water, they wouldn’t be stepping on anything.”

District 1 Councilmember Bill Steinke said while it’s been a long road to opening, more needs to be done.

“As you look at the beach today… as soon as the boat ramps are relocated inside the marina, the beach will even span a further distance along the waterway to have greater beach area for all of our citizens and tourists to enjoy,” he said.

Steinke said he and council are looking to make the existing, and new amenities at the Yacht Club Community Park “the best they can possibly be. Not just for today, but for decades to come.”

Those amenities could include a “resort-style” pool, community center for events, restaurants, and a secondary pier.

Steinke said the city is waiting on additional permitting to start on a new seawall and docking.

“And all the amenities will come next,” Steinke added.

With new amenities and the demolition of the Yacht Club Ballroom on the horizon, city officials are hopeful another closure is not forthcoming. Ilczyszyn said the city has plans for the end of December or early January to start the demolition of the ballroom and Tony Rotino Center. The city hopes to have all of the contractors staged behind the building as to not interfere with the limited parking for beachgoers currently.

“We think we’ve got it positioned statically where we can do that work, and allow the residents and tourists to still come here and enjoy the beach,” Ilczyszyn said.

While city officials were delivering this update, some residents were already taking advantage of the downed fences — laying out to work on their tan, taking a dip, and enjoying the new sand between their toes.

Part-time Cape resident Kay Davis was soaking up the sun with a few of her friends, all of whom were excited to have the beach in their backyard open once more.

“We planned on going to Sanibel or Lover’s Key (and due to traffic) we said, ‘Hey, let’s see if this is open.’ And it’s nice,” Davis said. “It’s so much easier to get here. And we love the Boathouse restaurant.”

Davis and the others all agreed it was getting tiring having to drive out of the city to enjoy a beachfront area while the area was shutdown.

“We missed it last winter,” Davis said. “There are great conditions here. I am a bit worried about what the parking is going to be like when (construction starts).”

The Yacht Club Beach will return to regular operating hours today.

Cape Coral Yacht Club - Come enjoy the beachfront center for Cape Coral recreation, relaxation, and family fun!

UPDATE January 2022:  Yacht Club Beach will close for major renovations for 2 years starting in April 2022.

UPDATE September 2022:  Due to Hurricane Ian damage the Yacht Club is closed indefinitely.

An elegant fountain welcomes guests ......... and when ground was broken in 1958 to begin building Cape Coral, the Yacht Club was one of the first structures built.

It was important to provide a meeting place and recreation for new residents and also to attract more residents to the Cape during the 1960's.

Today, the Yacht Club continues to provide these services and a whole lot more!  I also think you'll get a kick out of the 60's architecture.

This original landmark is part of Yacht Club Community Park, which has a beach, pool, fishing pier, marina, boat launch, tennis, racquet ball, beach pavilion, and ballroom.

Throughout the years, the Yacht Club ballroom has been an interesting part of Cape Coral History and home to many weddings, parties, gatherings, meetings and events ....... along with 2 additional rooms that can be rented.

From the back of the ballroom, you can see the community public pool. Here's a video of the Cape Coral Yacht Club pool:

The Olympic-sized heated pool is open everyday from March to October from 10AM-5PM.

There is a kiddy pool too, it has a dewdrop fountain and underwater bubblers for some splashing good time!

Swimming lessons, water aerobics, exercise classes, birthday party packages, and other special events are offered throughout the year.

Annual and semi-annual memberships can be purchased and a picnic area can be rented for parties.

A small playground and shuffleboard court is right next to the pool.

Annual pool memberships run for one year, and Semi-Annual run for6 months from the date of purchase. Swim class fees and rentals are extra.

Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult 18 or older.

Also located in the Cape Coral Yacht Club building is the Tony Rotino Senior Center where senior citizens can enjoy various activities like fashion shows, teas, dinner dances, exercise or computer classes, day trips, excursions, and fairs.

Next to the Senior Center and across the parking lot are the racquet ball courts.

And, just beyond the racquet ball courts and pool is the Yacht Club marina.

Also called the Cape Coral or Yacht Club Basin , the marina has 89 boat slips can dock boats up to 55 feet long.

Daily, monthly, and annual slip rentals are available on a first-come first-serve basis.

The fuel dock is open 8AM-5PM, and 9AM-5PM on holidays ....... it has gas, diesel, bait, ice, pump-out station, restrooms, showers, washer and dryer.

Next to the marina are five lighted tennis courts that are open Monday-Friday from 8AM-9PM, and Saturday and Sunday from 8AM-5PM.

Walk-ins are welcome and memberships are available for purchase.

Sign up for programs such as Peewee Tennis, Moms Morning Out, Cardio Tennis, adult and child clinics, and round robins are offered.

And, let's not forget about the boat ramp!

boating in cape coral

Boating in Cape Coral is fantastic! It's only a few miles to Sanibel ....... Ft Myers Beach, Cayo Costa, Captiva, Cabbage Key, and the Gulf of Mexico are just beyond.

Cape Coral residents can buy a $50 annual parking decal for their boat trailer at the Yacht Club or at City Hall.

Parking your boat trailer for the day costs $10 which you pay for at a station at the ramp.

You can't miss the boat ramp, it's just beyond the entrance to the park next to Yacht Club Beach.

As you can see, there are so many fun things to do here, so make sure you get on over to the Yacht Club!

Future plans move forward for Cape Coral Yacht Club as access remains closed

cape coral yacht club open

CAPE CORAL, Fla. — More than $1 million for new projects at the Cape Coral Yacht Club has been approved even as much of the area is still closed off after Hurricane Ian.

The City Council approved two grants for new restroom facilities and also expanding the beach at the yacht club. That money will be coming from Lee County’s Tourist Development Council.

Some people we heard from say they’re thrilled but it could be some time before they actually start those projects.

"It’s been great, until Ian showed up.”

It’s a common sentiment being felt by Southwest Floridians. And at the Cape Coral Yacht Club it couldn’t be more evident as the area has remained closed since Hurricane Ian.

“We haven’t completed our damage assessments there so it will be closed for the foreseeable future until we get out there and assess damage,” said Melissa Mickey, Communications Manager with the City of Cape Coral.

What’s left of the yacht club is a shell of its former self. But tonight, at Cape Coral City Hall, the future of the club took a step in a positive direction with the approval of two grants.

"One of the grants is for extending the beach,” said Mickey.

And the other will see construction of new and larger public restrooms. But getting started on construction hinges on how quickly the city can assess hurricane damage.

"There’s going to be additional things that will need to be determined, how they’re going to proceed with them," says Mickey. "If they’re going to rebuild or replace certain items.”

Something that has some in the cape are pretty thrilled about.

“It would be great to have a bigger beach," said Ben Smaltz. "We walk down to it very frequently and it’s a well used beach. It’s a nice area.”

Smaltz lives just a few streets down from the yacht club. He says seeing the current state of the beach hurts but understands why it’s closed.

"Making sure that it is sealed off, as you can see the fences and law enforcement officers are here doing their jobs," said Smaltz. "Something’s going on in there and they’re protecting the property in there and making sure no one’s getting hurt.”

While it will be some time before the club reopens, Smaltz says he’s pleased with the progress.

"We all have to pull on the rope in the same direction and I feel like, just as a citizen, I feel like I’m feeling that at all the levels and I’m grateful for it. Nobody’s perfect but they’ve done a dog gone good job.”

The city does not have a timeline for the yacht club reopening. They say it will remain closed for the foreseeable future until damage is fully assessed.
