Tecsew tagline

Tecsew Boom Tents are an effective way of offering Cockpit protection when in the harbour. Our Boom Tents can be bespoke or more conventional designs.

Windows (perhaps with blinds and access zips) can be incorporated to increase the functionality of your Boom Tent.

DSCN0153

The rear can be left open, or closed. It can extend to cover the back of the  Sprayhood , the hatch or all the way forward to the mast.

If your Boom does not extend far enough back into the Cockpit, we can design your Tent to extend further aft to the backstay, or a line tied between twin backstays.

If you have a  Stackpack , we can usually develop a design that secures either under the Boom or alternatively, zips to the sides.

If you do not find inspiration from the pictures below, then please look at our  Deck Covers  for more ideas. These can fully cover the decks and because they are usually manufactured in three zip together sections, the middle and aft section can be used independently as a Boom Tent.

Boom Tents for Sailing Yachts

Strong grommets are placed into the reinforced edge tabling and securing lines are inserted at all main points to enable the cover to be fully secured for those winter months.

Long-Lasting Boom Tent Material

Superior  Sunbrella Plus  fabrics are used as standard together with colour coordinated YKK coil no 10 zips, ensuring a first-class product branded with our discreet logo.

Tecsew Boom Tents come in a wide variety of colours and specifications to suit both your personal preference and boat features. We take pride in ensuring accurate production to come up with reliable and functional boat canvas and accessories.

Nearly all standard designs are available for self-fitting and we export to Europe, Scandinavia and the Far East.

Make This Boom Tent: the Poor Man’s Bimini

It’s a cloudless mid-summer afternoon. You’ve had a great day of sailing but you’re ready to drop anchor, start dinner, and relax for another stunning sunset. You’ve been in the sun all day so some shade would be great but you don’t have a bimini on your sailboat. You don’t really want to go down into the cramped cabin yet. The first mate will be making dinner and you’d just be in the way.

Before I continue, a bit of legal housekeeping. This post contains affiliate links. That means I receive a small commission if you make a purchase using those links. Those commissions help to pay the costs associated with running this site so that it stays free for everyone to enjoy. For a complete explanation of why I’m telling you this and how you can support this blog without paying more, please read my full disclosure .

While you’re sailing, you’re in the shade of the sails at least some of the time. But when you stop and drop the sails, you’re a sitting duck–roasted duck, that is.

Isn’t there a way you can improvise with an inexpensive tarp to make a sun shade? You could use it during rain showers too, to keep the cockpit dry and more comfortable.

You can set up a boom tent in just a few minutes with a small tarp, two pieces of PVC pipe, and a handful of bungee cords. I used this technique aboard Summer Dance before I added a bimini and besides being a lot cheaper, it has other benefits too, like more headroom.

Here’s what you need for a C22:

  • 6′ x 8′ plastic tarp with grommets in the corners and sides. Depending on the length of your boom, you may be able to use a larger tarp or you might want a smaller tarp.
  • (2) 1/2″ x 6′ Schedule 40 PVC pipes or conduit. Depending on the size of the tarp you choose you might need longer or shorter lengths. They should be several inches longer than the short edges of the tarp.
  • (4) 2′ bungee cords
  • (2) 1′ bungee cords (optional)
  • (4) 4″ long double-sided hook and loop strips (optional)

If you color coordinate the parts, it won’t look too ghetto. For example, a blue tarp and bungees with white PVC pipe.

Here’s how to set it up:

1. Flake and tie the mainsail compactly to the boom. Use your mainsail cover normally, if you want.

2. Standing in the cockpit, drape the tarp lengthwise over the mainsail and boom.

3. Hook one end of a 2′ bungee cord to each corner of the tarp and hook the other ends to the nearest convenient attachment points on the pushpit, lifelines, stanchions, etc. like in the first picture.

4. Standing on the cabin top, pull the hook of one of the forward corners further through its grommet until you can hook it into one end of a piece of PVC pipe. The tarp grommet should now be captured between the knotted end of the bungee cord and the end of the PVC pipe like shown below.

Hook each corner of the tarp to the ends of the pipe

5. Repeat step 4 for the other forward corner of the tarp. Bend the pipe downward slightly until you can hook the cord in its end. The bungee cords should stretch enough so that they hold the tent stable and the tarp arches a little for rain to run off and not catch much breeze.

6. (Optional) Use the double-sided hook-and-loop strips to lash the remaining grommets in the forward edge of the tarp to the PVC pipe. When you do the same to the other end of the tarp, they will stretch the tarp flat between the two pipes and hold the tent together.

Lash the tarp to the pipes with hook-and-loop strips

7. Standing on the transom, repeat steps 4-6 for the other end of the tarp.

8. Use the 2′ bungee cords to pull the boom tent toward the mast or aft toward the transom to provide the best cockpit coverage and to keep the tent from sliding off the boom if gusts of wind come up.

Since there are no supporting poles, access over the coamings for fishing, swimming, or stepping onto a dock is better than with a bimini. You might decide that you like your boom tent so much that you don’t want a bimini anymore. If you don’t need the shade while sailing, a boom tent is more convenient. But if you would prefer a bimini, read  Upgrade to a Bimini Top on a Budget .

I enjoy your weekly emails.Do you have anything g re making a mast crutch, to catch and hold the mast when I raise or lower it with my mast raising system? Thanks Jim LampkeHull, MA

Sent via the Samsung GALAXY S® 5, an AT&T 4G LTE smartphone

I made my own mast crutch similar to the manufactured ones for a fraction of the cost. It not only helps with stepping the mast but it supports it while trailering too. You can see it in the videos in How to Step a Mast Single-Handed With or Without Using the Boom as a Gin Pole . And if you’re a subscriber, you can download the fabrication drawing to make one for yourself from my Downloads page.

I have two shade deployments. 1. Golfing umbrella with small wire ring installed in tip (drilled hole) so I can hang umbrella to boom using S-hook or string. 2. Tarp arrangement simular to your setup except I used a light weight fabric shower curtain with rod pockets sewn at both ends and center. I use folding fiberglass tent poles from discarded tents (or from Walmart) in the pockets. Well, thats the seed of my designs for shade.

Thanks so much for this solution. We just bought a 27′ Halman Horizon this spring and it came with an old Canadian Tire nylon tarp that covered the boom but split at the end, so you could cover the cockpit completely. It had ties, so you could close the gap and then fasten the remainder of the tarp to the stern lines and railing. Unfortunately, this past weekend, the old and frail material began to rip. It was quite a simple but ingenious design and I’ve been trying to figure out how to replace it. I would also like to know if anyone has managed to create a cockpit tarp top with mosquito netting. That would be awesome!

So, I notice your boom tent is only 6.0′ wide on a boat with 7.7′ beam. My O’Day 20 has a 7.0′ beam, but I live in Phoenix where shade is critical. I even want to block the lower-angled sun.

If I used a 9′ tarp, do you think it would be reasonable or would it just get messy? Might the PVC flex too much?

Do you think using a skinnier tarp with a foot or two of something hanging from each side might be better?

Hello, Dave

A 9′ wide tarp would require a bit different design, I think. The PVC might need to be larger in diameter to hold it in one plane. It might also need non-elastic tie-downs to hold it level in a breeze. The PVC frame might provide enough tension in that case. Using the extra width as “walls” instead of a “roof” might also be a better compromise. It would act less like a wing and more like a dodger. I would try to make the walls easily openable for ventilation, view, and egress. Folding the walls and fastening the corners up underneath the centerline comes to mind first.

Give it a shot. Tarps are cheap and reusable for lots of purposes. If you come up with a design that works well for you, let me know and I’ll share it here for everybody.

Thanks for the ideas.

The wheels are still spinning. i am thinking that I don’t need walls on both sides. The sun is always going to be on one side more than the other and leaving one side open is good for easy egress as you mentioned.

So let’s imagine that we have an 8′ x 10′ tarp and the sun is more to starboard. I would lie the tarp width-wise and leave 2 feet hanging off of the starboard side past the end of the PVC. From there, I would pretty much set it up like you have it using the second grommet from the starboard corner of the tarp as the new corner (kind of like a new clew after reefing). Once I have the four corners secured like yours, I might run a line to give the wall more structure. It would go from the boat, through the original corner, then through the “reefing corner,” across to the other “reefing corner” and back down to the boat through the other tarp corner. At times when this wall is unnecessary, I can fold the extra material up backwards and strap it to the PVC with the existing hook-and-loop straps.

I live in Phoenix. I have shaded multiple vegetables gardens and outdoor dining areas with various shade cloths with pretty good success. The sidewalls can be really helpful for sure as that afternoon sun is a killer. Those pop-up canopies are always frustrating because the shadow they project is almost non-existent in the afternoon depending on the time of the year. It’s 4pm and it’s 93 degrees as a write this on March 14th!

For the record, the primary sailing lake (Lake Pleasant) has a regular daily rotating wind pattern due to the nearby mountains such that sailors are almost never in the shadow of their sails, so I already ordered one of those bargain biminis you recommended.

Sounds like a good plan, Dave.

Here’s what it ended up looking like.

https://goo.gl/photos/9wWqM4xYhWaNaXJn9

I went with thicker PVC (1″) to accomodate the extra width. I cut the PVC into thirds for easy storage and ran shock cord through them to make them like tent poles. (Although, initially I just used a 3/16″ nylon line and put a taught-line hitch at one end to take up the slack once the pieces were put together) I joined the PVC together with fittings that are slip fittings on one side and threaded on the other. (Now, that it is working, I’ll glue the slip fitting side.) I got the tarp for $10 online. It might be a little bit of overkill, but the thing worked really well and we don’t mess around with the sun around here.

Well done, Dave. I like the white tarp. The first mate seems to approve and that’s the most important part!

I copied your boom tent design, but added a little twist. I cut the 2 poles in the center and put a unglued coupling in. I then ran a length of bungee cord inside the pipe and tied it to both end grommets. This does 2 things. It keeps the tarp tight the length of the pole and you can pull the poles apart it the middle to roll up as smaller bundle!! Thanks for your ideas.

So they fold up like tent poles. Great idea!

Nice boom cover except one thing - the slot for topping lift has sewn end and it's impossible to use topping lift unless you drop the boom, remove halyards, then put boom tent cover, then connect halyards, lift boom and finish installation.

I got the 6' x 9.5' for my 21' boat. I got the UV resistant material I had it up while i was working on the cockpit and what a difference. I was cool and relaxed usually the sun beats down on me and gives me a headache even with a cap and screen. this time I had no cap and was great. The material, stitching, and grommets are top notch. There are grommets all the way around so you can switch the L and W to better suite you needs.

Exactly What I Needed

I ordered the large boom tent for my C&C 110 to help keep my dodger and cockpit area clean and dry. I just cannot bring myself to put a plastic tarp on my boat! Lee Sail Covers delivered the boom tent very quickly (in a time when everything is backed up) and it was exactly what I needed. The quality exceeded my expectations. I would recommend Lee Sail Covers to anyone looking for canvass for their boats. Thank You Lee Sail Covers!!

Make a boom tent for your cockpit

  • Ben Meakins
  • April 11, 2016

Bob Goode shows how you can increase your accommodation by making a custom boom tent

boom tent for your cockpit

Many years ago I started sailing with a Hurley 22, quite a small boat. Space was at a premium, especially with Anne and our  two small children on board.   We got around that problem  with a boom tent (see PBO March 1995).

Even though our current boat, a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey, is 9.7m (32ft) long, a period of wet and windy weather seems to shrink that down and make her feel much smaller. I also prefer to be outside in the fresh air where possible so that I can see what is going on around me. However, I don’t like getting wet – it dilutes my whisky too much. Time for another cockpit cover!

Sensible headroom Many yachts sport cockpit enclosures but these require a lot of fittings into the fibreglass and are very costly: I was quoted a four-figure sum for one but I did not want to spend that much. Besides, there is always the problem of where to stow these types of cover. Taking some very rough measurements of the cockpit, I cut a large sheet of builder’s polythene down to approximate size, then marked the centreline and fastened it to the boom with some sail ties through the plastic. I lifted the boom to get sensible headroom and ensure the cover would not rub on the sprayhood. The edges were then stretched out to the guard wires and clothes pegs used to secure them. The position of the edges were marked using a permanent marker, allowing around a four-inch gap for the lacings. I also took photographs for reference later. I made sure to allow the tent had plenty of overlap with the sprayhood at the front and also the cockpit sides so that no rain would find its way underneath. When deciding on the windows, I was careful to position them so that they were usable whether seated or standing. They are also placed such that when the cover is rolled up the window material is not folded, only rolled. This avoids creases in the plastic and will help to stop it splitting over time. If you have a cockpit mainsheet like I do then this will need to be released before the cover can be fitted. Lewmar supply quick-release shackles to replace the standard shackles on mainsheet blocks. These are quite expensive, but I was lucky in this respect as my mainsheet was already fitted with them. An alternative would be to have a slit in the cover to go around the mainsheet and close it with Velcro.

for-sale-stuff-035_cmyk

Trimming the template The template was then taken home, trimmed to size and notes penned on for reference. At this point there are several ways to proceed. I could have sewn the cover myself but a domestic machine is not really good enough for stitching several layers of heavy acrylic together. I know from bitter experience how much it costs to fix my wife’s sewing machine so I opted to get the work done with a local cover maker, hence the photographs and copious notes. By making the template yourself you will save a lot of his time and your money! If you are sewing the cover yourself and using PVC, be careful as it can stick to the foot of the sewing machine. A way around this is to place tissue paper either side of the seam and then stitch through it. Tear off when the seam is completed.

Shock cord tension

Cockpit-cover-011_cmyk

What the boom tent cost

The sheet polythene for the template cost £6 from Screwfix. A professional cover maker charged £328 for the finished boom tent in blue acrylic canvas, working from the template I supplied. I also bought: 8m of 6mm shock cord    £5.60 Nylon hooks    £6.90 2m of 6mm polyester line    £1.60 6 parrel beads    £2.40 4 luggage straps    £4.80 TOTAL: £356

SAVING MONEY If you are making one yourself, acrylic canvas is around £16/m and is available in 1.5m widths. My cover would have needed 5m. Blue PVC is not quite so nice, but would do the job for around half that price. Clear window PVC is around £8/m. Allow for 2m. Eyelets can be bought with a punch kit for self-fitting at around £7 for 25. Try to get extra punches as they blunt quickly. A length of webbing is needed to reinforce the centre seam and provide attachment for the luggage straps to hold the cover to the boom. A good source of such materials is Point North, at www.profabrics.co.uk. A home-sewn version would be about £130 using acrylic, or £90 using PVC – a lot cheaper than buying a bigger boat!

I am looking for a n easy to make boom tent. Currently using a plastic tarp over the boom secured with bungee's. woorks good but want something else. Any idea's would be great Thanks

sinnettc

I use a canvas painters drop cloth. Less than $20 and usually lasts a couple seasons. I put grommets in the corners and mid way down the sides and secure with lines and bungies. Next one might have a couple tent rods to hold the edges a bit higher.

Some of the "dock queens" around here use 1/2" PVC pipe for a frame over the boom. It'll bend slightly down to give it a bow. Not bad IMHO. And cheap being the operative term.

Ken

I found that tent ground cloths work fantastic as boom tents. I've had two for little over ten years still holding up well.

This might sound strange, but why would you want a boom tent? Somebody sleepin in the cockpit?

This is what I use and the quality is exceptional. This can also be used on land if one is going a shore. http://www.kelty.com/p-518-noahs-tarp.aspx?category=tents-shelters

Here is my awning after making and refining 2 blue tarp prototypes first. Used vinyl boat top to make final awning. Paint roller handles are used as support poles at 12 dollars each from Lowes. With handles collapsed and still in one side pockets and awning folded over on it’s self and rolled up the storage size is 4 feet long by 14 inches in diameter. Had prototype break loose once and slid up the stays till I had a square rigged top sail, added the 4 corner straps to deck to keep from happening again. When no wind, I've anchored out, put up the awning, Jimmy on the stereo, and take a nap is still better than a good day at home. http://www.sailrite.com/Weblon-Regatta-Vinyl-Fabric-White-Top-Mist-Blue-Lining-62

O'Day Daysailer sailboat Camping Boom Tent Coverby SLO Sail and Canvas

  • O'Day - Daysailer I & II
  • I have read the item description and agree to the stated build lead time. I understand that everything is built-to-order.

Product Description

Our O'Day Daysailer boom tent cover is designed after the original boom tent made for the O'Day Daysailer.

The O'Day Daysailer came with this as an option from the factory so that you could camp on your boat, turning your boat into your own tent on the water. Our O'Day Daysailer boom tent cover is equipped with bungee and hooks coming off the edges to hook securely to your rub rail.Today the boom tent style cover is used for a variety of reasons, one of which is to keep water out and sun off of the boat. Our boom tent has a tie collar with three snaps that run down the front of the mast as well as a #2 spur grommet to secure the aft section of the cover to the boom. We also use 10 aluminum hooks coated in plastisol to protect the gunwales and secure the boom tent to your boat.

We offer this cover in three different fabric types, look over the fabrics in the drop down chart below.

Our Original Boom-Tent Sailboat Winter Cover

As one of the premiere designers of the Boom Tent Sailboat Winter Cover we have spent a great deal of time upgrading and perfecting our present-day product. We protect your sailboat, its precious wood toe rail, and the Awlgrip / Painted Hull, or teak decks from the elements be it tropical UV damage to harsh snow & ice accumulation and wind. Protect your investment with a custom made winter cover.

About our Sailboat Winter Covers

In brief, Leon Canvas Inc is designed for mast-up winter storage. It can either cover your sailboat down from the boom to inside the toe rail OR over the toe rail by 6-8 inches. Based on your geographic location and how you winter your boat (in water or on land) we have the perfect solution for you.

We use nothing but the best and toughest materials. We use "Top Gun" fabric, a marine-grade polyester woven fabric with a rubberized finish. This fabric is entirely water resistant but our cover design is NOT air-tight so the shrink-wrap-moldy-swamp-effect come spring-time is not an issue.

For ease of installation, this cover comes in 3 sections. The forward section gets securely tied to the bow and terminates at the mast creating the perfect pitch for liquids to sheer right off. The "Mid-Section" has a mast collar not unlike a main sail cover. This middle section extends to and terminates somewhere mid-boom where the zippers align with your life line gates for easy access port and starboard. Additionally, in the third and aft section, we provide a stern access zipper from topping lift to transom for easy aft entry. Whether you just cover your boat to inside the toe rail or over, we have collared cutouts for all your boat's shrouds, and stays. Every cover is a custom-made cover and we will work with you to accommodate your boat's variances be it davits, radar poles or ladders etc.
