Yachty by Nature

Yacht rock outfits, yacht rock outfits 101.

Whether you just discovered the art of smooth or been digging smooth soft rock for a while now, the subject of Yacht Rock Outfits is on your mind. Let me just say, for those about to dock, we salute you. There is an unmistakable moment when Yacht Rock is revealed to you. For me, it happened at a fancy industry party in LA. This fab girl came up and mic dropped it so smoothly to my then 80’s band, Neon Nation , saying “you guys play any yacht rock”? Holy crap, I pretty much spit out my drink and fell to the floor wondering what I was in for.

“You walked in to the party, like you were walking onto a yacht.”

Yachty Attire

The rest is history and I’m now well into 7 years of playing keyboards in a nationally successful yacht rock band, Yachty by Nature . No doubt, I’m living that dream and it goes without saying, I’m deep in the yacht myself. With weekly yacht party after monthly yacht wedding and more, I’m becoming a Yacht Attire expert in thought and practice and already guiding the band and others in this area of fashion.

Truly, if you get the clothing right, enough people with that common goal, just add yacht music and the fun ensues. Truth be told, I’ve watched as a room full of punk rockers that committed to the groovy, eclectic yacht rock dress code transformed like you wouldn’t believe.  They turned a simple celebration with a yacht rock band into a full scale 1978 throwback LOVE FEST and the clothes were off the hook. The energy, the vibe, the clothes, the music became something so magical all its own. Build the yacht and they will sail to it.

So, next time you are having a yacht party or watching your favorite yacht rock band indulge yourself with an epic outfit that will make all it happen. It’s not just the music, the band, the vibe, the look, the energy. It’s the sum of its parts and those smooth outfits have the mighty power to transfix your situation.

The Captain’s Hat…

hefner yacht rock outfits attire clothes fashion yachty by nature

Yep, you guessed it, the fastest coronation to yacht rock royalty is the Captain’s Hat.  Buy one, make one, bedazzle one or borrow one. In fact, the sky is the limit here so let your creativity reign if you are gonna go for it.  But, just get one somehow, some way and you are on the yacht. In fact, Broner makes a very comfortable, quality, straightforward and good looking hat that fits well.  Additionally, it avoids the cheap fit and look of those basic hats on Amazon. Do yourself a favor, get a hat or dig deep in the vault and find a classic, vintage, or authentic captain’s hat online. Additionally, we’ve seen some pretty cool and unique creations out there, but for simplicity, fit, and value, Broner is the answer.  Lastly, remember what Hefner did for the captains hat!

Yacht Rock Stripes get it done…

No matter what color, stripes will be the 2nd easiest way to begin your yacht fashion transformation. Put on a red and white striped shirt (or blue or black mainly) and you’ll be sailing in no time. In fact, stripes are probably the #1 most sighted outfit at a yacht rock party. Just know that it’s only the start. When you accessorize over the stripes with a complementary pant color or scarf, ascot, belt, and obviously the captain’s hat or more, you’ve earned your captain’s bars quicker than you can say Ship Shape! Don’t forget to keep it simple, too much or conflicting stripes will sink that ship just as fast.

That 70’s look…

Gettin’ Yachty @ Costello’s in Mission Viejo

Due to the strong connection between the silly, the goofy, the fun and the yacht party, going retro will set a course for adventure. Call it the Ron Burgundy effect or just throwing back to the 1977 duds they wore on Midnight Special , this look is uber sexy and may attract the opposite sex faster than any other yacht look. In fact, you don’t have to look too far to find polyester or denim clad jean meat at many yacht rock concerts. Additionally, the fake mustache works wonders whether you go 70’s vintage or any different yachty outfit.  More importantly, get bonus points on your yacht rock outfits if you can get the feathered hair going!  Polyester, print shirts, and for the ladies, buy that disco dress and some fabulous glasses and you’re ready to yacht!

The Yacht Club, Tennis Club, Golf Club…

Think Caddyshack, Marina del Rey, golfing, the harbor, and tennis. Moreso, put a tennis sweater over that polo or even better go up the ladder and put on that navy blue blazer with an ascot and some yellow glasses. Actually, that’s the calling card for us in Yachty by Nature! Pretend that you’re christening the Flying Wasp or dropping anchor with Rodney Dangerfield in Caddyshack and you’ll be flying indeed. Or even better, watch Caddyshack to get in the mood for your party and let inspiration take hold…and even a few classic movie lines. In fact, if you look around the golf club or yacht club scenes, your creativity is sparked immediately.  The outfits jump right off the screen and wreak of Yacht Club greatness.  Speaking of movies, we’ve even seen a die hard Yachty arrive in the Goldie Hawn outfit from the movie Overboard. Keep your yacht rock outfits classy San Diaaaaaago!

Go Hawaiian on your Yacht Rock outfits…

yachty hawaiian shirt attire clothing clothes wear suit uniform costume

Get Nauti !

Lastly, this category is a catch all for everything nautical, yachty, and seaworthy.  Use your imagination or stick to the basics.  You can don the captain’s outfit with shoulder bars easily for the Love Boat vibe.  Or, you can just look like Charlie’s Angels coming off a yacht in 1978.  Literally any type of ocean, beach, seaside, or otherwise yachty type of clothing will do.  The scarf around the neck, the boat shorts and the Nantucket red pants and plaid shirt all qualify as supremely yachty fashion.  When in doubt, check yourself by asking, “would I wear this outfit in the summer in Nantucket or Martha’s Vineyard?”  Most importantly, if the answer is yes, you are yacht rock camera ready.  In fact, let’s not forget the boat shoes, deck shoes, or Sperry Top Siders all together.

Yacht Rock Outfits Wildcard…

Never forget that there’s really no authority on this subject so you can always just go for it.  Sometimes, the more uniform, standard, and strict we get on the yacht, the more mundane we become.  Therefore, don’t be afraid to dive into the vanity t-shirt, go stripes and ascot, and generally mix it up.  There are no hard and fast rules behind the Yacht Rock outfit, just your creativity and passion for the music.  From experience, we’ll go captain’s outfit one day and crazy boat shirt the next.  Ultimately, we’ve seen it all from the stage and relish the moments when people go wild with it.  In fact, there’s probably even a yacht rock adjacent area for the Pirate Party as well.  Captain Crunch sightings aside, those parties can really bring together the nauti, yachty, knotty by nature and then some.  In the end, go for it and see what happens.  It’s all fun and games until someone loses an eyepatch.  Honestly, it’s all about the fun so get Kraken!!!

As always, let the vibe be your guide.  Thus, for your next yacht rock themed party, concert, or just a Yachty night on the town, get your ensemble going.  Whether you are new to the yacht or an old deck hand, that outfit will crank up the experience.  So, commit to making that statement with your yacht clothing or up your game and improve on the garb you already have.  As we well know, you can never have enough options to mix it up for a fun night with Yachty by Nature or some other occasion.

Happy to be your guide here.  Feel free to comment and add some great ideas on this post or on social media. #yachtrock #yachtrockoutfits #yachtybynature #yachtattire #yachtrockfashion

Thanks for giving props to Tiki Caliente! I would like to point out that the most proper Hawaiian shirt to wear to a Yacht Rock concert is one that would have been for sale between 1978 and 1983! Think to yourself, would Magnum PI or Pablo Cruise wear this? And if so, bring it on! Most Magnum PI kind of Hawaiian shirts go great with a white jacket and white shorts. Vintage late ‘70s and early ‘80’s Hawaiian shirts can be found Online in Etsy yacht rock shops, and on eBay. Not expensive, and so ”vintage smooth”. Look like a pro, and be “era appropriate”. Girls can find vintage 70’s nautical dresses on Etsy, too!

THIS is everything!!! I love it Carl!!!

Ahoy Jenny! THanks so much for the kind compliment 🙂 As you know, we’re super inspired and love switching up the outfits, attire, clothing, and costumes. Yacht Rock rules!

Awesome show this past weekend at Circa Caliente glad the rain stopped so the show could go on.

11 men's yachting wardrobe essentials

Yves Salomon tracksuit

A perfectly tailored suit, a cashmere sweater, leather loafers: there are certain pieces no man's wardrobe would be complete without. Featuring iconic items by designers including Larusmiani, Gucci and Ralph Lauren, we uncover the heritage, history and design features that make these items indispensable to the modern  superyacht owner .

Athleisure has been fashion’s favourite buzzword for (too) many seasons – and often used to mask sartorial laziness. Not the case with this leather tracksuit by Yves Salomon: with buttery soft leather and a slimming cut in a chic mustard shade, it screams private jet, not grocery run. For extra style points, wear it with an untucked shirt and white trainers.

Larusmiani swim shorts

After more than a decade in the fashion wilderness, the camouflage print re-emerged in 2017, when it was spotted everywhere on the runway – from street-style favourites Off-White and Vetements to sartorial powerhouses Bottega Veneta and Cerruti. Since then, it has shown no sign of disappearing from the world’s wardrobes – you’ll find it on jackets, shirts, trousers, backpacks and more. That’s hardly surprising, since the camo pattern acts like a neutral and goes with pretty much everything. Wear it on deck this Caribbean season with these Larusmiani swimming shorts.

Ecoalf jacket

Spanish brand Ecoalf was founded by Javier Goyeneche to create clothes from recycled material and today it collects hundreds of tonnes of discarded plastic from the bottom of the Mediterranean to create cool outerwear – so far, it has recycled 70 million plastic bottles. This Tucson waterproof jacket is made with 100 per cent recycled nylon fashioned from discarded fishing nets.

Stefano Ricci trainers

Perfect for pairing with everything from summer shorts to a modern slim-cut suit, dress trainers are the new men’s wardrobe must-have and few do them better than Stefano Ricci. Founded on a 100 per cent made in Italy ethos, each pair is handcrafted in fine leather or crocodile skin, with inspiration taken from the eponymous designer’s Florentine heritage. Choose a bold blue hue for spring or, for something truly special, make use of the brand’s bespoke accessory service.

Loro Piana bomber

For most yacht owners and guests the Loro Piana brand needs no introduction. Whether it’s the Storm System gear for regatta-goers, highly sought after Vicuna wool knits, or breezy linen shirts, the chances are there’s something with a Loro Piana label on board wherever you’re sailing. And now you can add to your collection with this super soft cashmere and jersey hooded bomber – ideal for braving the worst of the winter elements.

J. M. Weston loafers

Founded in 1891 by Édouard Blanchard, JM Weston’s elegant loafers have been a staple of Parisian style for more than a century. Still handmade in the Limoges factory from which they originated, Weston’s ‘mocs’ became a cult hit in the 1960s when worn by rebel French Mods known as the “Bande du Drugstore”. New interpretations under current creative director Michel Perry remain primed for the modern wardrobe. This turmeric-hued pair is a case in point.

Brioni shirt

Founded in Rome in 1945, Brioni has been a trailblazer since it staged the first ever men’s fashion show, at the Palazzo Pitti, Florence in 1952. Now helmed by Australian creative director Justin O’Shea, the house’s booming bespoke and ready-to-wear lines are a perfect example of prized Italian craftsmanship. A case in point is this classically elegant fitted shirt – add a simple Brioni gold pin for unexpected edge at your next formal yacht dinner. Zoe Dickens

Tod's loafers

Todd Marchard

Diego Della Valle, the chairman and CEO of Tod’s, is a man who loves the sea. He also loves the mythology of American casualwear and sees this epitomised in the enduring style of one John Fitzgerald Kennedy. These two passions combine happily in the fact that since 1998 Della Valle has been the owner of Marlin , a boat that was for many years in the Kennedy family.

Della Valle’s forebears were shoemakers in the Marche region of Italy, where Tod’s is still based, and the company has been built on a combination of Italian craftsmanship and the relaxed weekend style of the US, which the young Della Valle saw while working there for his father’s shoe business. It struck him that, while Italians oozed style, it was based around formal wear, while the Americans dressed down to relax. Della Valle recognised in the humble driving shoe a perfect opportunity to express his new vision for an Italian casual lifestyle and created the now famous Tod’s moccasin, the Gommino. It has a sole covered with 133 rubber pebbles, or gommini. Since its launch in the 1970s, the model has been rendered in a multitude of versions in a variety of materials and colours, featuring various details.  Peter Howarth

Ralph Lauren shirt

Sean Gleason

There are few better suited to dress the aspirational world of yachting than Ralph Lauren. His curated mix of preppy youth, classic cuts and all-American appeal make his designs favourites for life at sea.

Nowhere is this more evident than in the brand’s signature chino. With a broad following, these trousers have cemented their place as the stylish choice for the wealthy at play. How to wear yours this summer? Keep things simple with a tailored white shirt and rolled cuff. Zoe Dickens

Persol sunglasses

Like many of the best designs, Persol sunglasses (from the Italian per il sole, meaning “for the sun”) were born out of necessity. In 1917, Turin photographer and optician Giuseppe Ratti began making eyewear for Italian air force pilots and Alpini soldiers fighting in the snowy Dolomites.

After the war, these goggles and later, sunglasses, with the famous Silver Arrow hinge, caught on among yachtsmen and petrolheads alike. By the 1960s, Jack Kennedy was wearing them and Marcello Mastroianni donned the classic Persol 649 in the 1961 comedy Divorce Italian Style . Seven years later, Steve McQueen ensured continued “cool factor”, when he wore the folding version of the 649, the 714, with striking cobalt-blue lenses, in The Thomas Crown Affair (1968). The 714 was (and is) made with natural cotton acetate, photopolarising lenses and flexing cylinders in the arm to create a more personalised fit. Chris Madigan

Table of Contents

1. Breezy White Sundress: Your Go-To Yacht Staple

A flowy white sundress is a must-have for any yacht outing. It’s light, airy, and perfect for those sunny days on the water. Pick a dress with a fun detail like lace trim or a cute tie at the waist. Pair it with some comfy sandals and a wide-brimmed hat, and you’re all set for a day of cruising in style.

Don’t forget to bring a light cardigan or wrap in case it gets breezy. A white sundress is super versatile – you can dress it up or down depending on the occasion. Plus, it looks amazing in photos against the blue water and sky!

2. Nautical Stripes: Classic Cool for the High Seas

Channel your inner sailor with a cute striped top or dress. Navy and white stripes are the classic choice, but feel free to mix it up with different colors too. A striped boatneck tee paired with white shorts or a striped maxi dress both look super chic on a yacht.

Add some red accessories like a scarf or bag to complete the nautical look. This timeless style never goes out of fashion and always looks right at home on the water.

3. Flowy Palazzo Pants: Comfy and Classy

Wide-leg palazzo pants are perfect for a yacht trip. They’re comfy enough to move around in but still look dressy. Choose a lightweight fabric like silk or chiffon in a fun print or solid color. Pair them with a fitted tank top or crop top to balance out the flowy pants.

These pants are great for lounging on deck or dancing the night away. Plus, they’ll keep you covered up if it gets windy. Add some statement earrings and cute sandals to complete the look.

A stylish cover-up is a must for any yacht outfit. Look for something that can easily transition from swimwear to party wear. A sheer kaftan or a pretty crochet dress are both great options. Choose one in a bright color or fun print to stand out.

You can wear your cover-up over your swimsuit for lounging on deck, then add some jewelry and sandals to dress it up for dinner. It’s the perfect multipurpose piece for a day on the yacht.

5. Stylish One-Piece Swimsuit: Make a Splash

Gone are the days when one-piece swimsuits were boring. Now they’re super trendy and come in tons of cute styles. Pick one with a fun cutout detail or a cool back design. A solid color suit in a bright hue like coral or turquoise looks amazing against the water.

9. Colorful Kimono: Layer in Style

A flowing kimono is a great layering piece for a yacht trip. It can serve as a stylish cover-up over your swimsuit or add some flair to a simple outfit. Look for one in a bright color or bold print to make a statement.

Crop tops are great for staying cool in the heat and showing off a little skin without being too revealing. Just remember to pack some sunscreen for your midriff!

11. Comfortable Espadrilles: Deck-Friendly Footwear

Espadrilles are the perfect shoes for a yacht trip. They’re comfy, casual, and won’t mark up the deck. Choose a pair in a neutral color like navy or white to go with all your outfits.

Flat espadrilles are great for daytime, while wedge versions can dress up your look for evening. They’re also easy to slip on and off if you want to go barefoot on deck.

12. Stylish Sarong: Versatile Beach Essential

A sarong is a super versatile piece for your yacht wardrobe. You can wear it as a skirt, dress, or even a shawl. Pick one in a bright color or fun print to add some personality to your look.

Sarongs are great for throwing on over your swimsuit or using as a beach blanket. They take up almost no space in your bag, so you can bring a couple of different ones to change up your look.

A romper is a fun and easy outfit choice for a yacht trip. It’s all-in-one, so you don’t have to worry about mixing and matching. Look for one in a lightweight fabric with shorts to keep you cool.

16. Flowy Off-Shoulder Top: Romantic and Breezy

An off-shoulder top is perfect for adding a touch of romance to your yacht outfit. Choose one in a light, flowy fabric that will catch the sea breeze. White is classic, but pastels or bright colors look great too.

Pair your off-shoulder top with shorts or a skirt for a cute daytime look. It’s also perfect for transitioning from day to night – just add some statement earrings and you’re ready for sunset drinks.

17. Chic Sunglasses: Protect Your Peepers in Style

A great pair of sunglasses is essential for any yacht trip. They’ll protect your eyes from the bright sun reflecting off the water and make you look super stylish. Choose a classic shape like aviators or try a fun, oversized pair for a glamorous look.

Make sure your sunglasses have good UV protection. Bring a backup pair too, just in case one goes overboard!

18. Lightweight Denim Jacket: Layer Up for Cool Nights

A denim jacket is perfect for throwing on when the temperature drops in the evening. Choose a light wash for a beachy vibe. It’s great for layering over dresses or tops when the sea breeze picks up.

A denim jacket can dress down a fancy outfit or add some structure to a flowy dress. It’s a versatile piece that you’ll be glad you packed.

19. Cute Beach Bag: Carry Your Essentials in Style

A roomy beach bag is a must for carrying all your yacht day essentials. Look for one made of straw or canvas for a beachy vibe. Choose a bag with a fun saying or bright colors to add some personality to your outfit.

Make sure your bag is big enough to hold sunscreen, a book, a water bottle, and any other items you might need for a day on the water.

20. Stylish Wrap Dress: Day-to-Night Versatility

A wrap dress is perfect for a yacht trip because it’s so versatile. Wear it over your swimsuit during the day, then dress it up with jewelry for dinner. Choose one in a bright color or fun print to stand out.

Wrap dresses are great because they’re adjustable and flattering on most body types. They’re also easy to pack and don’t wrinkle easily.

21. Cute Beach Cover-Up Shorts: Quick and Easy

Cover-up shorts are a great alternative to traditional cover-ups. They’re easy to throw on over your swimsuit and provide a bit more coverage than just a top. Look for a pair in a lightweight, quick-drying fabric.

Choose shorts with fun details like lace trim or tassels to add some style. They’re perfect for going from the yacht to a beachside lunch spot.

22. Stylish Wedge Sandals: Dressy But Deck-Friendly

Wedge sandals are a great choice for dressing up your yacht outfit while still being practical. The wedge heel won’t damage the deck like stilettos might. Choose a pair in a neutral color to go with multiple outfits.

Wedges give you some height without sacrificing stability on a moving boat. They’re perfect for evening events or when you want to feel a bit more dressed up.

23. Cute Straw Clutch: Evening Elegance

For evening events on the yacht, a small straw clutch is perfect. It’s big enough to hold your essentials but small enough to not be cumbersome. The straw material keeps things beachy and casual.

Look for a clutch with fun details like tassels or embroidery. It’s a great way to add some texture to your outfit.

24. Flowy Palazzo Jumpsuit: One-and-Done Outfit

A palazzo jumpsuit is a great all-in-one outfit for a yacht trip. It’s comfortable, stylish, and easy to wear. Choose one in a lightweight fabric like silk or jersey for maximum comfort.

Jumpsuits can be dressed up or down depending on your accessories. Add some statement earrings and wedges for a dressier look, or keep it casual with flat sandals and a sun hat.

25. Cute Hair Accessories: Stay Stylish in the Sea Breeze

Don’t forget about your hair when planning your yacht outfits! Cute hair accessories like headbands, scrunchies, or hair scarves can add a fun touch to your look while keeping your hair under control in the wind.

Choose accessories in colors that complement your outfits. A silk scarf tied around a ponytail or a pretty headband can elevate even the simplest outfit.

Navigate with me as we explore ‘What to Wear on a Boat: Outfit Ideas for Women,’ and allow the voyage of fashion discovery to set sail!

Setting Sail with Style: Essential Boat Day Attire Tips

1. The Art of Simplicity  While bringing out our most glamorous looks is tempting, let’s keep it grounded on the boat. Think about the winds that might unravel intricate hairstyles or the splashes that could surprise you mid-journey. The simpler, the better. Trust me, you’ll be more relaxed; there’s nothing more enchanting than a carefree soul on a boat!

2. Footwear Fundamentals  On one boat trip, I decided to wear my favorite suede sandals, and let’s say they didn’t remain my favorite for long. Oops! So, here’s a golden rule: always opt for non-slip, waterproof flat sandals. Not only will they keep you steady during those unexpected choppy waters, but they’ll also be safe from any unplanned splashes. And if you’re on a yacht or a similar fancy vessel? Be prepared to go barefoot!

3. Evening Elegance  Ever found yourself on a boat, gazing at a spectacular sunset, only to be interrupted by an unexpected chill? Yep, been there. Always bring along a lightweight jacket or wrap. Trust me, as the sun sets, the temperature can dip quicker than you think, especially with that sea breeze.

4. Daytime Essentials  Nothing dampens a boat day like squinting against the blinding sun or chasing after a hat stolen by the wind. So, grab a snug-fitting hat and some sunglasses. You’ll be grateful for the shade and the added protection against those sneaky UV rays.

5. Sun Protection is Key . One sunny boat day, I learned that water can amplify sunburns. (Hello, unexpected tan lines!) So, always,  always  lather up on that sunscreen. Those UV rays can be sneaky even if you’re lounging in the shade.

6. Be Prepared  If your boat day involves a dip in the water, be an intelligent sailor and bring a change of clothes and a towel. I’ve learned from experience that sitting in a wet outfit is not the most pleasant feeling.

Setting sail should be all about relaxation and fun. So with these tips in your fashion arsenal, you’re ready for a stylish and comfy boat day adventure. Happy sailing!

What to Wear on a Yacht in 2023: A Smart Fashion Guide

What to Wear on a Yacht

Introduction:

Planning a yacht trip? Before you embark on your nautical adventure, you’re likely to ask yourself: what to wear on a yacht? Whether you’re attending a glamorous yacht party, cruising the open waters, or basking in the sun on the deck, dressing appropriately and stylishly is key. In this comprehensive fashion guide, we’ll navigate through the latest trends and timeless classics to help you find the perfect yacht-worthy attire. So, let’s dive in and discover what to wear on a yacht!

Opt for Nautical-Inspired Outfits:

To blend seamlessly with the maritime ambiance, consider incorporating nautical-inspired elements into your attire. Classic navy and white stripes, anchor motifs, and crisp blue hues evoke a sense of timeless elegance. Choose a Breton striped top paired with white shorts or a navy blue dress for a chic, effortless look.

Embrace Light and Breezy Fabrics:

Yacht trips often involve warm weather and plenty of sun, so it’s crucial to choose fabrics that keep you cool and comfortable. Opt for lightweight and breathable materials like linen, cotton, and silk. These fabrics allow air to circulate, ensuring you stay fresh and stylish even in the heat.

Don Stylish Swimwear:

When packing for your yacht adventure, be sure to include stylish swimwear. Opt for high-quality swimsuits that flatter your figure and make you feel confident. Classic one-pieces or trendy bikinis in vibrant colors or chic patterns are always a good choice. Don’t forget to pack a stylish cover-up or kaftan for when you’re not in the water.

Don’t Forget Sun Protection:

When it comes to what to wear on a yacht, protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful rays is essential, especially when spending long hours on a yacht. Incorporate accessories like wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses with UV protection, and lightweight scarves to shield your face and neck. Additionally, don’t forget to apply sunscreen with a high SPF to exposed areas of your skin.

Choose Comfortable Footwear:

Opt for footwear that balances comfort and style. Deck shoes, boat shoes, or espadrilles are excellent choices for their non-slip soles and maritime aesthetics. If you prefer sandals, opt for ones with good arch support and secure straps. Avoid high heels as they can be impractical and unsafe on a moving yacht.

Layer Up with Versatile Pieces:

Yacht trips often entail varying weather conditions, so it’s wise to bring versatile clothing items that can be layered. Lightweight cardigans, wraps, or linen shirts can be easily thrown over your outfit if the weather gets cooler or for protection against evening breezes.

Dress Smartly for Evening Affairs:

If you’re attending a yacht party or planning a special evening event on board , embrace a more sophisticated attire. Opt for elegant cocktail dresses, tailored linen suits, or stylish jumpsuits. Remember to choose breathable fabrics to ensure your comfort throughout the night.

Conclusion:

When it comes to what to wear on a yacht, striking a balance between style, comfort, and practicality is key. Nautical-inspired outfits, light and breathable fabrics, stylish swimwear, and sun protection essentials should be at the top of your packing list. Additionally, comfortable footwear and versatile layering pieces will ensure you’re prepared for any weather conditions. By following this fashion guide, you’ll be ready to sail the seas in style, exuding confidence and elegance during your yacht adventure!

What To Wear On A Yacht featured image by the supermelon

Attending a yacht party calls for a blend of sophisticated style and relaxed elegance, capturing the essence of the nautical setting while ensuring your comfort and confidence.

Whether envisioning a glamorous sunset cocktail party, a leisurely sunbathing session, or a serene exploration of hidden coves, curating the perfect yacht ensemble becomes an art.

This guide navigates the realm of yacht fashion, offering insights and inspiration to ensure you’re impeccably dressed for every moment of your nautical experience.

From chic essentials that capture the essence of oceanic elegance to tips on selecting attire that harmonizes with both sea and sky, the following are the style essentials to elevate your yacht experience to unparalleled heights.

yacht boy outfit

Yacht settings generally adhere to a semi-formal dress code, implying that items like shorts, flip-flops, or t-shirts are best avoided. Instead, consider selecting slacks or khakis for men; sundresses, jumpsuits, or skirts are excellent choices for women.

When in doubt about your attire, it’s preferable to lean towards a more polished appearance rather than a casual one.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

When dressing for a yacht outing, opt for a nautical-inspired ensemble. Consider wearing a crisp white shirt paired with tailored shorts, boat shoes or espadrilles, and a sun hat.

This classic look combines comfort and style, suitable for both genders, while capturing the essence of a yacht setting.

Before finalizing your outfit for the boat party, there are a couple of factors to consider, with the first being the prevailing weather conditions. If the temperature is soaring, opting for lightweight and breathable fabrics is paramount.

Donning stylish swimsuits is integral to yacht party attire, accompanied by chic cover-ups and delicate, breezy dresses or shorts. By skillfully coordinating these elements, you can effortlessly master the art of yacht-worthy fashion.

However, in the event of cooler temperatures, ensuring you’re well-insulated is imperative. Being caught unprepared amidst the vast ocean during fall or winter could prove quite uncomfortable.

Moreover, regardless of the schedule, having a sweatshirt or a light denim jacket at the ready is prudent, particularly when the night descends.

The maritime environment can turn quite chilly after sunset, especially during the colder months.

Furthermore, your outfit choice should be tailored to the specific activities planned aboard the yacht. If your plan revolves around leisurely moments on the boat’s deck, a combination of shorts and a T-shirt layered over a stylish bikini is likely suitable.

However, should water sports be part of the agenda, selecting attire that remains relatively dry and light prevents any undue discomfort caused by excess moisture.

Lastly, take into consideration the overarching ambiance of the yacht setting. For a laid-back gathering, opting for a more relaxed outfit is acceptable.

However, if the occasion leans towards a more refined tone, it’s essential to align your attire accordingly.

Midi or maxi dresses and stylish rompers and jumpsuits are excellent choices that seamlessly blend sophistication with style.

Essential attire for women at a yachting event includes cover-ups, tunics, kaftans, and dresses with a fluid, breezy quality. These pieces harmonize seamlessly with swimwear, offering both a stylish layer and a means of keeping cool and comfortable.

Glamorous NightsWrap-style jumpsuit, statement earrings
Resort GlamOff-the-shoulder romper, wedges
Sophisticated CharmWhite wide-leg pants, silk blouse

Opting for a maxi or lace cover-up exudes an elevated charm, while selecting a sundress cover-up or a romper lends a more relaxed aura. For everyday yacht wear, consider the practicality of linen dresses and side tie skirts, both of which effortlessly complement the maritime experience.

No looks exudes the maritime quite like a cover-up, and these lightweight garments serve as a stylish and functional layering option when transitioning between water-based activities and lounging on the beach or on a yacht. Cover-ups are typically made from materials like chiffon, cotton, linen, or lightweight knits, which make them breathable and comfortable in warm weather. Moreover, cover-ups offer protection from the sun’s rays while maintaining an air of sophistication. The following are common cover-ups for women:

With their loose and flowing silhouettes, tunics further amplify a great seaside look. They often feature intricate designs, embroidery, or patterns and can be made from lightweight materials like cotton, linen, or sheer fabrics.

Tunics provide coverage for the upper body while allowing air to circulate, keeping you cool. Their effortless charm pairs well with the nautical backdrop, allowing women to exude both comfort and elegance.

yacht boy outfit

Kaftans are loose-fitting, maxi-length dresses with wide sleeves, often made from flowing fabrics like chiffon, silk, or lightweight cotton. Kaftans can be quite elegant and are popular for their bohemian vibe. They offer women full coverage and the ultimate in  comfort during warm weather.

Slay it with a sarong!

Typically made from lightweight, quick-drying materials like rayon or silk, sarongs are versatile pieces of fabric that can be wrapped around the waist like a skirt, tied as a halter dress, or used as a shawl. Sarongs are easy to pack and provide coverage while allowing flexibility in styling.

Inspired by traditional Japanese clothing, kimonos are open-front, flowing garments that often feature vibrant prints and patterns and are made from lightweight materials.

Kimonos are distinctive, add a touch of elegance, and can be worn over swimsuits or paired with shorts and tops.

Oversized Shirts

For a more casual approach, an oversized button-up shirt can be worn as a cover-up. It’s a versatile option that can be worn open or buttoned up, offering coverage and protection from the sun.

Play up the look with vibrant colors or intricate patterns for an engaging yacht style.

Is a cocktail dress a suitable choice for women?

For occasions leaning towards the more refined end of the spectrum, a sophisticated yacht party might very well warrant the selection of a cocktail dress, or in rarer instances, an elegant gown. The cocktail dress code, being slightly less formal than full evening wear, aligns well with such gatherings’ relaxed yet stylish atmosphere.

Ideally, the event’s formality level will be communicated beforehand, but exceptions do exist.

When the ambiance is less formal than a boat wedding, alternative options like wide-legged pants, rompers, or wrap skirts can be considered. Attire resembling what you would choose for a beach or poolside gathering would also be fitting.

An essential consideration when attending any yacht event is the choice of footwear. It’s advisable to steer clear of heels – opting for flat shoes is a safer and wiser choice to ensure a comfortable and accident-free experience.

Not only will you seamlessly blend in, but you’ll also be safeguarding your eyes and skin from potentially harmful UV exposure. Including sunscreen in your essentials is equally crucial to ensure comprehensive protection.

Amongst men, the favored ensemble for yacht journeys in motion often comprises a breezy, lightweight linen shirt, offering both comfort and composure throughout the excursion. Naturally, a pair of swim shorts is indispensable, ensuring you’re perpetually prepared for impromptu dips.

Completing the ensemble, opt for casual boat shoes that complement your yacht attire seamlessly.

Stylish sunglasses are essential to the maritime look as a vital accessory, effectively shielding your eyes from the sun’s glare.

While specific occasions may necessitate more refined apparel, such as dinner parties, these suggestions primarily focus on curating a laidback, relaxed aesthetic.

Linen button-downs stand as the preferred choice for men while onboard due to their lightweight and breathable nature.

They have long been associated with boating, ensuring a harmonious fit within a yacht environment. Light cotton options also offer similar advantages, with items like polo shirts seamlessly blending into a crowd.

Even a well-chosen t-shirt can find its place, though appropriateness should be tailored to the context. However, a slightly elevated appearance may be preferable for slightly more formal outings or celebratory gatherings.

A great pair of tailored pants are a definite option for a day or night out on a yacht. Linen pants , chinos, or loose slacks are all versatile enough for any event.

Yet, a reliable pair of shorts proves invaluable if the yacht’s purpose involves active endeavors like fishing or sailing.

These offer comfort and freedom and ensure readiness for any unforeseen water-related situations.

In the realm of yacht wear, swim shorts emerge as a particularly pertinent item, given the likelihood of aquatic escapades. Whether you find yourself plunging into the Mediterranean or relaxing a jacuzzi, shorts are a pragmatic must-have.

Be it for leisure or the potential of an emergency scenario requiring a swift swim, swim shorts serve both purposes seamlessly.

Ensuring both security and comfort, boat shoes are an indispensable inclusion for any yacht experience as they prevent unwanted slipping on the deck. Sometimes referred to as deck shoes, they closely resemble loafers but include laces for added practicality.

Yacht SettingShoe Ideas for Men

Evening EleganceLeather loafers, dressy sandals

For more relaxed outings, some opt for flip flops, which can be suitable for casual days spent with friends.

Accessories

Wearing sunglasses aboard a yacht transcends mere fashion, assuming the role of a vital shield against the sun’s unyielding glare and potentially harmful UV rays. As you sail on a maritime journey, these shades emerge as a reliable companion, diligently safeguarding your eyes from discomfort and potential long-term harm.

Yacht SettingAccessories and Essentials for Men

Whether you’re leisurely absorbing the sun’s warmth or actively engaging in water-based thrills, sunglasses exude an undeniable air of refined elegance, effortlessly elevating your yacht ensemble.

What Is Suitable to Wear to a Yacht Party?

Crafting the perfect attire for a yacht party involves a skillful equilibrium among comfort, style, and functionality, seamlessly embracing the maritime setting.

Embracing an effortlessly chic and laid-back approach, the careful curation of your outfit can significantly enrich your voyage across the waves.

Deciding on fabrics that prioritize breathability and lightness, such as linen or cotton, ensures your ease amidst the sea breeze. In the backdrop of daytime gatherings, a palette of soft and pastel hues, including serene blues and delicate pastels, imparts an invigorating and lively ambiance.

Opting for a versatile piece like a fashionable sundress, coupled with boat shoes that perfectly balance comfort and trendiness, encapsulates the essence of casual sophistication.

As twilight descends and the festivities extend into the evening, embracing darker shades introduces an element of refinement, harmonizing with the fading sunlight.

The thoughtful inclusion of tasteful accessories, like a wide-brimmed hat for enhanced sun protection and stylish sunglasses that shield your eyes and accentuate your maritime charisma, further elevate your ensemble.

Ultimately, the crux lies in aligning your attire with the occasion’s level of formality, while never compromising on comfort, and embodying an aesthetic that mirrors the serene allure of open waters.

Final Considerations

Embracing a fusion of refinement and casual ease emerges as a simple and effective strategy when considering yacht attire. While certain occasions might warrant a subtle refinement, the extent of this shift hinges upon the unique event and the preferences of the hosts.

Give precedence to fabrics like linen and other lightweight options to optimize comfort. An indispensable element to include is a pair of boat shoes, guaranteeing stability on the deck. Additionally, ensure you don’t neglect key essentials such as swimsuits and vital sun protection gear, which notably includes sunglasses.

Style guide - what to wear on a yacht.

Published 11 July 2023

Ditch the excess baggage on your next superyacht holiday with this simple how-to guide to pack an elegant and practical capsule wardrobe for your superyacht stay

Whether you are cruising off for a romantic weekend on board a luxury charter yacht, stepping aboard for a family celebration, or spending the weekend basking in the Mediterranean sunshine with friends, a superyacht charter is a heady mix of glamour and barefoot luxury. So, when it comes to looking the part, what should you pack to ensure you looking effortlessly cool?

A superyacht charter demands a certain dress code that is both comfortable and stylish at the same time. This might sound simple, but ccreating a capsule wardrobe for every scenario and occasion is no mean feat when it comes to the glamorous world of yachting. However, although there are certain designer names that are synonymous with the superyacht set, it doesn’t mean it’s all designer suits and gowns – quite the opposite in fact. Here is the Burgess guide to everything you need to pack - and the luggage to pack it all in...

Clothing Essentials

Effortless style allows a seamless transition from day to night

The majority of superyacht cruising grounds are in warmer climates, so lightweight clothing is a necessity for both daytime and evening. The perfect daytime outfit will be suitable for just about any occasion – the whole attraction of yachting is the freedom to go anywhere you like and do anything you like at any given time. One minute you might be heading ashore for a coffee in the harbour, only to find that the cobblestone streets are lined with boutiques just waiting to be explored, or that fellow guests would like to take in a dose of culture ashore, followed by an impromptu swim in a secluded cove on the return tender journey. Being ready for every eventuality is the key to keeping your cool.

Great for those impromptu swims in secluded coves

When it comes to a superyacht, swimwear is an outfit in its own right and one of the most important items to pack. For ladies looking for true, dolce vita style, a one-piece swimming costume not only looks stylish but will allow you to mess around worry-free on the watertoys, both above and beneath the surface. Meanwhile, those looking to simply bask in the Mediterranean or Caribbean sunshine and relax on deck might prefer to opt for a strapless bikini to avoid tan lines visible under the evenings attire. A selection of classically styled cover ups to wear for al fresco dining or a beachside lunch are a must, and for visits ashore a light dress, such as Heidi Klein’s Sunset maxi dress, is perfect.

Orlebar Brown linen shirt and striped shorts

For men, being in the sunshine is the perfect excuse to inject some colour into your outfit, perhaps with a nautically themed pair of swim shorts, such as Frescobol Carioca’s tailored swim shorts. For al fresco dining on board, or visits ashore, simply add a stylish linen shirt and loafers, and you will be ready for any occasion.

Evening options

Perfect for those crisp summer nights

From canapes and cocktails or dinner aboard to dining in the Michelin-starred restaurants and family run tavernas, every evening brings a different social activity when cruising aboard a superyacht. What to wear in the evening obviously depends on the climate of your destination, but rest assured on board a superyacht there is always an excuse to wear something glamorous. While cruising the Mediterranean, ladies might choose to wear a statement dress and elegant accessories, while the Caribbean calls for a more casual approach. Pack plenty of light and comfortable fabrics but remember to take a few warmer items too, in case the evening segues into a nightcap on the breezy aft deck, or perhaps a late-night return by tender – while out at anchor you will of course be open to the elements.

Take the superyachting lifestyle to the next level with a black tie themed dinner party

For men, evening usually calls for a smart-casual look. Pare down your summer tailoring with a stylish linen shirt, perhaps in a cotton-blend to add subtle texture. Lightweight trousers, rather than shorts, are also a must when heading ashore for dinner.

Layering options

Wrap up with layers and enjoy a relaxing movie night under the stars

Although the majority of cruising is in warmer climates, the sea breeze can pick up and add a chill, especially at night once the sun has set. From cover ups for the daytime, to light jumpers and wraps for the evening, clever layering, come rain or shine, is a skill. Pack several options to take you seamlessly from dawn until dusk, al fresco to inside. Whether returning from an evening ashore or getting cosy during an al fresco movie night on board, the key is to stay warm and stylish with layers. Opt for a statement scarf draped as a blanket or sumptuously wrapped around your shoulders, providing the perfect accompaniment to any outfit, while men can take a favourite sweater.

Don’t forget the accessories

You might think that you don’t need to consider shoes as barefoot chic is the only way on board, but a couple of pairs of sandals and high heels for the ladies, and loafers for the men are always an essential for excursions ashore. Although you won’t be wearing them on board, a pair of slip-on boat shoes for stepping ashore are usually perfect for men. A pair of trainers are also essential, for the on board gym or adventures ashore, and, given the glamorous surrounds of the Mediterranean cruising grounds, a pair of leather, smart shoes could also be needed when heading ashore for the evening.

Sandals for ladies are an essential for excursions to the beach or an afternoon browse around boutiques, while come the evening, a pair of heels or wedge sandals are the perfect addition to any glamorous outfit.

A superyacht wardrobe isn’t complete without a classic Panama hat. A Panama is a favourite item to take on board, but all types of hats warrant a spot in any superyacht suitcase. Not only do they provide protection from harsh UV rays, but they also keep you cool should you find yourself without shade during the hottest part of the day. A number of different options should ideally be taken, so that you can select the style to suit the weather and activity. On still days glam it up poolside with a wide brimmed straw hat, and when the wind picks up don a stylish cap, which can also be used to provide shade for that morning beach run.

Wherever you are exploring, be it in cooler climes or chartering in the Mediterranean or Caribbean, it goes without saying that a great pair of sunglasses is a superyacht wardrobe essential. Not only do they complete the superyacht look, they also provide essential protection from both UVA and UVB rays. On that note, check the UV protection – just because you might have a designer pair of glasses, a high price tag doesn’t always mean they have polarised, UV protection lenses. Take at least a couple of pairs, or even perhaps one for each deck, so that you are never caught without, and remember, a pair of chic sunglasses are the perfect finishing touch for every look. Whether you prefer cat-eye sunglasses or oversized, round-frames, square-frames or classic aviator styles, use them to liven things up a little, or add a dash of youth and vibrancy to your outfit.

Time on board means a break away from timekeeping, but although telling the time on board is incidental rather than functional, watches still have their place on the packing list. Watches are the most popular and prestigious jewellery available for men, and always add timeless glamour to ladies' attire. Fortunately, yachting has become the most prominent port of call for watchmakers and as such there is a wealth of nautical collections for both men and women. From serious submersibles to refined pieces to wear on deck, seaworthy or yacht-worthy, a watch makes a fine addition to any outfit.

Whether celebrating with cocktails on board or accessorising swimwear, earrings, bracelets and necklaces add sparkle and glamour to any outfit. From fine jewellery for evenings to layering for a luxe-vibe poolside, add some summer sparkle and enhance your outfit, day or night. Choose brightly coloured stones to bring light and warmth to the skin, or mix or clash colours, turning up your brights with vivid hues. Match the shade of your jewels to your swimsuit for a timeless and sophisticated look, and layer jewellery alongside summer dresses. Combine gold jewellery with corals and shells, as well as semi-precious stones for that cool, summer look. Top tip – sun lotion will cling to your jewellery and can dull even the brightest of diamonds, so take them off while applying sun cream, and let it soak in before replacing. Gold and diamonds worn by the pool or on the beach won’t be damaged by the elements, whereas semi-precious stones can sometimes be porous, so better to leave them to be worn in the evening.

Bags of style

Arriving in style is an important factor for many charterers and guests, and so your luggage needs to be as stylish as your outfit. Those heading off on a sailing yacht cruise should opt for soft luggage for easy stowing, while the larger motor yachts will always have space for your Goyard or Louis Vuitton case to be stowed away. Whether you opt for a deluxe luggage brand or a classically styled holdall (think Daniel Craig as James Bond), you can make a powerful statement with the stylish luggage.

Yacht Outfit Guide: Mastering Yacht Chic

Julie Higgins

A yacht outfit is essential for both style and comfort when cruising the open seas!

If you’re attending a boat or yacht party and have no idea what to wear, we’re here to guide you through this.

Whether it be a casual day or a glamorous yacht gathering, it would be a great time, and each type of party needs a different style.

This is your chance to dress differently than your normal attire. Leave the jeans, t-shirts, leggings, and board shorts at home, and impress with a well-put-together outfit.

Yacht Outfits: High Seas, High Fashion

Whenever we think of a yacht party, we think of light, breezy attire, and that probably means mostly some things made out of linen.

Some of the must haves on a yacht are sun hats and sunglasses, also flowy or oversized clothing is your way to go, like kimonos, and dresses.

For the Daytime Sailor: Casual Yacht Outfits

When the sun is out, it’s a great time to play on the water.

We’ve planned countless celebrations – brunches, lunchtime events, and casual cruises – for different groups during the day.

While you can choose any color you want, light colors are especially popular in the heat of the sun, as well as nautical colors like light blue and navy.

From Sunset to Moonlight: Elegant Evening Yacht Outfits

Whether it’s a boat wedding, milestone bash or a company party, nighttime yacht parties are always magical.

From twinkling lights to starry skies, the moment you step onto the rooftop you are immediately wowed.

And that in itself is more than enough reason to dress up extra special.

Nighttime parties are great for cocktail dresses and semi-formal attire.

You don’t want to wear anything too long to avoid someone stepping on your dress or your shoe getting caught on the fabric. Go for comfortable glamor.

If you opt for a cocktail dress, make sure the length is appropriate.

Have fun accessorizing with statement jewelry and your favorite clutch or small shoulder bag (avoid a large tote or purse for an ultra-chic look).

Footwear Ahoy: Best Shoe Choices for Yachting

You should always focus on choosing comfortable footwear.

A pair of slides, espadrilles, platform sandals or boat shoes are your way to go.

Flat shoes provide better balance and give you a more secure grip on the boat’s surface, reducing the risk of slips, especially if you’re setting out in windy conditions.

Accessorize the Voyage: Nautical-Themed Add-ons

As I mentioned before, some of the must have items on a yacht trip are sunglasses and sun hats. But it’s pretty tricky when it comes to keeping it stylish.

As for other accessories, you don’t have to go extra as you’d probably be swimming and the breeze will make it hard for you to wear things like earrings. So keep it simple with accessorizing in general.

Yacht Outfit

Swimwear for the Deck and Dive

If your yacht trip includes a lot of swimming, then keeping it easy and comfortable wearing a swimsuit all the time is the best option.

Wearing a one-piece swimsuit with a wrap skirt or wide leg pants over the swimsuit, and lounging like that.

Lightweight clothes made from natural fibers like linen, tencel, and cotton for your boat or yacht day trip.

All of them are highly breathable, allowing air circulation and preventing you from feeling overheated in the sun or during energetic activities onboard.

They also have great moisture-wicking properties, which means that any sweat or water on your clothes quickly evaporates, keeping you cool and dry.

Yacht Outfit

His and Hers: Yacht Outfits for Couples

If you’re going on a yacht trip with your significant other, it’ll be fun to coordinate your outfits together, either with just the color or the full outfit.

So if you’re wearing a blue dress with a white hat, he could wear a blue linen shirt with white linen pants.

In general, on a yacht for men, simplicity is the way to go. Unless the event calls for formal attire, steer away from a tuxedo.

Top options include a classic suit, dress slacks with a nice blazer and tie, or dress slacks with a sports coat and tie.

Conclusion: Setting Sail in Style

Dressing for a yacht party is honestly easier and simpler than you think. Just think breezy, light, and comfortable outfits.

You could easily show off your personal style by adding a few linen and lightweight clothing items to your look.

Dressing for a Yacht Club Party

Lucky you!  You have just received an invitation for your very first yacht club party.  For most people this brings up the question “What on earth do I wear?”.  Have no fear!  We work with many yacht clubs to make sure their members look sharp with custom ties and scarves .  Here are some of our style tips to help you navigate the waters of yacht club fashion and pull together an amazing outfit.

Yacht Club Wear – Do Nots

While yacht club attire can vary by club and time of day of the event, there are certain items that just won’t do.  You should always avoid the following:

  • T-Shirts / Tank Tops
  • Revealing clothing (i.e. cut-off shirts, mini skirts, etc)
  • Wrinkled or otherwise “sloppy” attire

Also, while you may be tempted to don an ascot or jaunty captain’s hat … don’t.  For most people this will come across as cliche rather than sporty.  Classic styles, nautical colors and smart layers are the best way to go when building your dock-side ensemble.  You can also shop many of the clubs’ stores for shirts and ties embellished with the club logo.

Yacht Club Wear –  Dos

Hopefully, your invitation indicates the dress code.  But if it doesn’t, there are two general rules of thumb.  If the party is during the day, then select attire in the “country club casual” category.  If the party is in the evening, opt for traditional cocktail party wear.

Country Club Casual for Men

A classic polo or Oxford shirt is the standard for men.  Shirts should be clean, in good condition and neatly pressed.  These should be worn with black slacks or khakis.  When it comes to shoes, loafers in brown or black are the most popular choice.  A less popular but also acceptable footwear option is a pair of leather boots in black or brown.  Some yacht clubs require blazers even for daytime events.  To be safe, check the attire requirements posted on the club’s website or call them prior to the event.

Country Club Casual for Women

Just like men, polo shirts paired with well-cut slacks are an acceptable option for women.  Women can also choose a tailored blouse worn with a knee-length cotton skirt for a slightly dressier look.  Another popular ensemble is a simple summer dress with minimal accessories.  A cashmere sweater is the perfect outer layer to protect from cool breezes.  Ballet flats are the top shoe choice when dressing country club casual.

Cocktail Attire for Men

While not as formal as black-tie, cocktail wear is decidedly dressier than daytime apparel at a yacht club.  Dress slacks with a jacket and tie or a full suit are both appropriate options for an evening event.  Choose neutrals and subdued tones over bright colors or prints.  Men should accessorize with a black leather belt and matching shoes.  Stick with a loafer or Oxford style shoe and be sure your socks coordinate with your pants.

Cocktail Attire for Women

Cocktail dresses should be knee-length or midi-length in a solid or very subtle print.  If you are having a tough time finding the right color, the quintessential “little black dress” is always a smart choice.  Another popular trend for evening events is a formal women’s pant suit.  When it comes to accessorizing, less is more.  Choose a single statement piece of jewelry rather than a multitude of pieces and opt for a clutch instead of a shoulder bag.  Heels, dressy sandals, and ballet flats are all acceptable shoe options.

Here's What to Wear on a Yacht

Are you looking to dress your best on the boat this season? Are you lost when it comes to finding the perfect outfit for your next yachting excursion?

We've got your guide to what to wear on a yacht so you can dress to impress.

Dress for the Occasion

First, you'll need to know what you're doing on the yacht. If you're looking for what to wear on a yacht for a day trip, you'll be in a completely different scenario for an overnight, or if you're only going for dinner.

Plus, standard yacht attire for male-identified people and standard yacht attire for female-identified people attends to be different, so it's important to keep social norms in mind if blending in is an important issue for you.

If you're having dinner on a yacht, go for standard cocktail attire. Dresses for women, and blazers for men. Ballet flats are the perfect shoes for a fancy occasion on a boat. Dresses should be knee-length or longer since they can fly up in the wind on the boat.

Men should make sure their clothes are carefully tailored for a sleek look. For particularly fancy events, like weddings, your hosts will probably send an invite with a dress code, so make sure you read it and follow the instructions for dressing that you're given.

Casual Occasions on a Yacht

If you're headed out on a day trip, men should look at   Bermuda shorts   and other comfortable and practical options. Pants made out of madras, twill, corduroy, or cotton are all great for day trips out on the boat. You can pair them with   deck driver shoes   in a complementary shade. Make sure you also wear socks, while you're at it!

If you plan to try out   water sports , like waterskiing or wakeboarding, while hanging out on the yacht, make sure that you bring a bathing suit or wear it underneath your clothes. That way, you won't end up soaked through at the end of the day.

For people who plan to laze around on deck, the answer to this question is simple. Women can wear a bathing suit, whatever cover-up they feel comfortable with (such as a caftan), sunglasses, and sandals. Men can wear sandals, swim trunks, and a nice polo. You'll suit the occasion and be comfortable while you do it.

Know Your Hosts

If you're planning on paying a visit to someone else's yacht, keep their preferences in mind. Your hosts will have a big impact on the dress code for your yacht trip.

Some people will expect something dressier, and some hosts will expect a more practical look. When in doubt, you can ask them what they have in mind for the day and what they plan to wear! That way, you'll be sure to be appropriately dressed for your upcoming yachting trip.

Go Classic With Your Boating Style

There are a bunch of classic nautical options you can work into your yachting wardrobe. The standard horizontal striped long-sleeved t-shirt, with a boat neckline for women, will never lead you wrong when you wear it out boating.

Everyone loves a   polo shirt   for a day out on the boat. Motifs like anchors, lobsters, fish, and the good old American flag will fit right in while you're fishing off the side of your yacht.

Or, if you'd rather go a little ironic with your yachting outfit, try wearing a classic Hawaiian shirt.

Just make sure you're comfortable with whatever you choose to wear. Confidence is key with any outfit, so while looking appropriate is important, it's also important to feel good about your outfit so you can project that feeling to the world.

Basically, you don't want to overthink it when you're choosing what to wear on a yacht. Dress simply, and don't overaccessorize. Stick to simple color schemes, and stay away from wearing multiple clashing patterns at once.

Be Practical When You Dress for the Yacht

While yachting can be a fancy occasion, it's still important to be practical. Make sure that you wear hats and scarves (along with plenty of sunscreen, ideally with an SPF of at least 15 to keep the sun from burning you.

You can also try   wearing a visor   if you're worried about your head getting too warm. Sunglasses are also a great choice to keep the sun out of your eyes, and you can get them in a wide variety of different styles to suit your needs.

Wear the right shoes to prevent slipping or injury on the deck. Don't wear heels while yachting, in any circumstances. You also don't want to get caught in anything while you're out on the boat. Stick with clothes that fit closer to your body, rather than floaty dresses. That's why you'll want to stay away from scarves, as well.

Make sure any jewelry you wear is waterproof, and stay away from wearing things that could be damaged by the wind or the water. That includes metal that could be damaged. And, it can be colder in the water than on land, so bring an extra sweater or windbreaker for the trip. Layers are always a great choice for being out on the water.

What to Wear on a Boat | Boat Outfits Ideas You’ll Love

When you’re planning a boat trip, the first thing you need to think about is what to wear. There are a variety of different types of boat trips, from leisurely cruises on a pontoon boat to sailing expeditions in the Caribbean.

No matter what type of boat trip you’re taking, there are plenty of outfit options that will make you look and feel your best. And I can tell you from experience, that being comfortable makes the trip ten times more enjoyable. In this post, I’ll take a look at some cute sailing outfits for women and show you how to put together the perfect summer yacht party outfit.

Be sure to also research what you should be eating on a boat trip to ensure you don’t go hungry anywhere along the way.

Casual Boat Ride Outfits

flower t-shirt selection

Casual boat trips are complimented perfectly by comfortable boat ride outfits. And what you’re wearing should certainly be the first thing on your boat trip checklist . Here are some of the essential items of clothing to make up your boat attire.

Casual loose fitting shorts

Comfort comes first when it comes to casual boat rides. And what says comfort more than a pair of loose-fitting shorts. They are perfect for the warmer weather as they’re airy but still allow your legs to catch a tan (if you enjoy that sort of thing).

Peak cap or hat

Having a peak cap or hat with you is essential for keeping the sun off of your face. The last thing you want is to get off the boat only to discover that your face is a brighter shade of red. It also comes in handy to shade your eyes from the sun and the glare on the water, which can get quite intense on sunny days.

If you are not one for wearing shorts, then a pair of boho pants might be a better fit for you. If you’re looking for boat cruise outfit ideas for ladies, then pairing your boho pants with a strappy top will not only be a good look but be incredibly practical at the same time.

The loose-fitting pants will ensure you don’t get too hot when the weather is warm, but there is also enough material to keep you covered from a chilly breeze on the water.

A jumpsuit is the ideal summer boat cruise outfit because it is light and flowy. If you are planning on hopping off the boat for a little swim, then you can simply wear your jumpsuit over your costume, which is my go-to.

If you plan on wearing long pants or shorts, then a t-shirt is an ideal option for those with pale skin or who tend to burn easily. Keeping your shoulders covered goes a long way in protecting your most vulnerable areas from the harsh sun’s rays.

River rain jacket

Weather can change so quickly when you’re on the water, so it’s important to take something to keep you warm. A river rain jacket is ideal as it’s waterproof, so you’re safe from splash, mist, and rain if the weather takes a turn for the worst.

Boat Party Outfit

If you have the pleasure of partying on the ocean, then you need a killer yacht party outfit. Luckily, yacht party attire for women is not that hard to come by, but it does need to cover a variety of criteria. While looking good maybe your number one, being comfortable and warm are also both essential.

Here are some of my top recommendations for adding to your yacht outfit ideas.

Two-piece outfit with a maxi skirt

If you’re wondering what to wear to a boat party, then a two-piece outfit might be the way to go. Not only is it a head-turning look, but it is incredibly comfortable and shows just enough skin to make it yacht party appropriate.

The great thing about a mesh dress is that it can be worn over a bikini or swimsuit to take the chill out of the air, and to make you feel slightly more clothed. It’s easy to get in and out of if you are planning on swimming and allows your bikini to dry through your mesh dress.

Summerlong jumpsuit

If you want to look great without showing off too much skin, then a long jumpsuit might just be the female yacht party attire for you. It’s fashionable and flattering on all body types, allowing you to look put together without much thought at all about what you need to wear.

Long summer beach dress

A long dress with strategic cutouts allows you to show off some skin while still keeping it classy. It’s another piece that can be thrown over a bikini when you are finished tanning or swimming, making it ultra-convenient.

Outfit for Sailing

packing clothes for boat trip

If you are going sailing on the open ocean, then you need boat gear to suit your needs. These are some items you could be adding to your sailing outfits to make your experience a whole lot more comfortable. Whether you’re rafting in Glacier National Park or heading out on open waters, these clothing options are sure to come in handy.

A rash guard is something that acts as a swimsuit but prevents you from getting rashes when you are walking around wet for too long the way a swimsuit would cause a rash. This is perfect to go under other clothes and be worn by itself on the warmer days.

Waterproof and windproof pants

Waterproof and windproof pants are an absolute must. As we all know, the weather on the water can turn in a matter of seconds, and you don’t want to be caught in the cold. These pants will protect you from the spray of the water, but also from the icy oceanic breeze while you’re sailing.

Waterproof and windproof jacket

This can be worn over your rash vest to keep you warm when the weather turns. A waterproof and windproof jacket is one of those things that are essential to take with you, whether or not the weather is good when you’re leaving on your sailing expedition. I have never regretted having that extra layer of protection from the cold.

Water shoes

If you go sailing, you’re going to get wet. To avoid getting your new pair of sneakers soaked to the brim by taking water shoes. They won’t get damaged by the salty water and will help you to grip the deck even if there is plenty of water on board.

Life vest

It’s not uncommon in sailing to get swept overboard, but when you do, you want to make sure that you’ll remain bobbing on the surface of the water. The easiest way to do this is to wear a life vest.

Frequently Asked Questions:

When it comes to what you should be wearing on a boat, there are a couple of other questions that people generally ask. As I tend to take boat trips rather regularly I feel that I can help you out if you are wondering any of the following questions.

Should you wear jeans on a boat?

Although jeans are alright for a boat party, they are generally not your best bet. When they get wet they can be very uncomfortable to wear, which means you are likely to take them off at some point or another. If your heart is set on wearing jeans on your next boat ride, I would recommend taking a change of clothes with you just in case you happen to get wet somewhere along the way.

What should I wear on a boat when it’s cold?

it’s best to layer your clothes when the weather is a little on the cold side. This way, when it warms up you can always peel off a couple of layers. It’s important to take a windbreaker with you to fight off the sometimes icy winds that work their way across the water. Anything waterproof is likely to come in handy when you are aboard a boat.

How cold is too cold for boating?

Boating when it is too cold can become a risky ordeal so it’s best to stay on dry land at any temperatures below 70 degrees Fahrenheit. This is because falling into the water can cause hypothermia to set in rather quickly, and that isn’t something anyone wants to have to experience.

Final Thoughts on What to Wear on a Boat Ride

Now that you have a better idea of what to wear on a yacht day trip, you can make your experience a whole lot more comfortable and enjoyable. Pack these items in for a cruise in New Jersey or a yacht party off the coast of Miami and you’ll be styling the whole way.

Whether you’re wondering what to wear on a pontoon boat or simply what to wear boating of any kind, this post will help you find the right clothing items to make up your outfit. Wherever you’re heading off to, enjoy the boat trip!
