We kick off our yacht interiors gallery with the stateroom. When it comes to the primary bedroom on these boats, no expense is spared. They are large, comfortable and stunning in design. These bedrooms are bigger than our primary bedroom.

Many guest bedrooms on a yacht have two beds so that it can accommodate more people. However, they are, as you’ll see below, still very, very luxurious. These are certainly cozy sleeping quarters.

Salon and Dinette Photos

My favorite room on the boat is the salon and/or dinette area. In many cases, the dinette doubles as the living room. Mega yachts have dedicated salons and dining areas. I love these superb lounge designs below in the cabin as well as the upper lounge areas.

I must admit that kitchens on these super yachts are fairly small. I guess the cooking is done by the staff and yacht owners prefer to have more space for bedrooms, deck space and lounge space. That makes sense given there really is limited space. Nevertheless, these kitchens are gorgeous and the yacht designers certainly didn’t skimp with respect to quality.

Most boats dedicate very little space to bathrooms. Not these. The primary bathrooms below are incredible. The smaller bathrooms are guest bathrooms. These luxury yachts are so large and spacious that even the bathrooms are both beautiful and comfortable to use.

The bar and living room area follow more or less the same route. Indeed, they favor light color schemes and clean, shapely lines. It’s all about practical luxury, functional without being quite minimalist.

Finally, we have the bedroom. While not opulent in the slightest, this room has the same sort of stylish beauty as the rest of the interior. Once again: you don’t want clutter on the high seas!

At last, we reach the Logica .  This project for a luxury yacht by Marin Kemp Design is everything our interior decor dreams are made of. Like the Aurora, it takes a much more art deco approach to superyacht interiors. The little metal details are just what we like to call luxury hardware!

The bedroom and living space designs follow very similar color schemes and strategies. Since you can’t have any clutter, it’s all about denoting luxury through the tiniest details.

Finally, you have the bathroom project, which is as light and gorgeous as the rest of the design. It’s a luxury bathroom through and through.

9 Easy Ways to Make Your Boat Interior Look Lighter and Bigger

A dark and cramped interior can make a boat feel uninviting and unappealing. If you’re sitting below deck surrounded by dark wood and with little natural light, and the vibe is about as good as a cold dungeon, you want to know “How do I make it better than this?”. Now while a boat’s primary function is practical — stay afloat, keep us safe, transport us from A to B, it’s natural as human beings (especially if you’re living aboard) to want to create a homely space that feels good too. How do you do that in a small boat so full of personal items, cruising gear and boat systems? The great news is there are clever and easy ways to revamp your boat interior so it feels more spacious.

And while most of us have to balance the budget and prioritise boat jobs, I’m here to reassure you that you don’t need to feel guilty about investing time and money in making your home onboard enjoyable to relax in.

The happier you are below deck the longer you’ll want to spend onboard — making the time, sacrifice and effort all worth it. Something I can confirm after completing our first yacht interior makeover . To maximise your living space the key areas to focus on are organisation , colour , fabric and lighting . Below you’ll be guided through each of these elements. With a little creativity and some strategic thinking, you can use these easy visual tricks to transform your boat.

1. clear clutter and get organised.

First of all, clear out all the visual clutter and get rid of anything you don’t need. This might sound obvious, but you’ll be surprised how much you accumulate over time, and how much space you can gain by having a good clear out. My Marie Kondo boating philosophy is if you don’t love it, and it doesn’t save your life then it’s up for grabs. Organising your boat can be a can of worms, as sorting one cupboard turns into having to sort another — the next minute the whole boat is pulled apart but it needs to be done! 

Sort out gear into collections of boat things that make sense together eg: Wet weather gear and laundry things, tools and spare parts, food storage, clothes, bedding, charts and navigation tools. 

Donate anything decent to a local thrift store

Recycle as much as you can

Use plastic containers, small jars, ziplock bags, baskets and vacuum storage bags to keep things organised.

Challenge your Tetris skills to pack gear away into logical spaces around the boat — using all your cupboards, lockers and sneaky spaces to keep things orderly, secure and out of sight.

Deep clean as you go

Take the opportunity to wipe out cupboards, dig into the dark corners of lockers and get rid of dust, mould and any funky remnants of past life onboard. Having a clean boat will keep you healthier onboard and cleaner surfaces reflect light might better.

Tip: Use white vinegar and a dash of warm water as an excellent cheap and natural cleaner to cut through built up dust and grime.

Once your interior space is organised and clean, it’s much easier to assess what you’re going to do next and move on to update the colour scheme.

2. Pick a light colour scheme

Another easy way to help your boat interior feel more spacious and airy is to choose light, cool colours or delicate warm hues for a colour scheme. Choose colours in the same family and incorporate a tone-on-tone look across your walls and upholstery to create a more open feeling onboard.

Here’s three light, natural colour palettes for inspiration.

A local paint store will be able to work from the Pantone codes to create these colours for you.

3. Paint the walls a light colour

Painting a lighter colour throughout your boat will reflect natural light and onboard lighting. The higher the gloss finish of a paint, the more reflection you’ll get. I recommend a semi-gloss paint finish like eggshell or satin which reflect light while hiding any slight imperfections in the surface. Older boats often have a dark wood interior with heavy layers of varnish. It is entirely possible with the right preparation (and yes, some hard work*) to sand back the varnish and repaint the surface in a colour of your choosing. If your boat has a lot of dark wood you don’t have to get rid of it all. You may just select a few key walls to paint, and retain some wooden features to keep the character of the boat. You may find some strong opinions against painting wood but it’s your space to do what you like with, so do what makes you happy — it’s your boat. * DIY painting preparation is hard work and I titled this blog ‘easy ways’ so if you’re feeling miffed I understand. But on a level of difficulty, I believe (more often than not) that working with the boat you’ve got is a much easier process than selling up, and spending a lot more money and hours working to pay for a different boat.

4. Consider painting the ceiling white

Typically, painting a ceiling a darker colour than the walls will make the ceiling feel closer and the room smaller. That’s the opposite of what we want for your space! So painting the ceiling a lighter colour than the walls is an easy way to draw the eye upward and make the boat ceiling feel higher (and the room bigger). A bright white ceiling is most commonly used to create an airy feeling in a house, and it works well in a boat interior too.   See the painting FAQs below for the best paint to use onboard.  

5. Select light coloured upholstery

Of course, you can choose whatever colour or pattern that you love for your upholstery, but not all fabric will have the same effect in a small space. Stripes are popular in the nautical world, but they can visually dominate small boat saloons. Bold prints do work in some tiny spaces but only if there’s plenty of light (bigger prints are better than smaller prints for the illusion of space).

Choose light, neutral coloured fabrics for settees and cushions to open up the space and help reflect light.

These look timeless and you can add more character through personal items and other decor. There are many options for high-quality stain, dirt and water resistant upholstery fabrics so don’t panic about having a lighter fabric onboard. You can always throw a blanket down on the settee while unpacking or moving gear around onboard (the place everything tends to get stacked while a boat job is done!).

6. Play with texture

A key element of your interior design revamp is adding texture for cosiness and personality. Using tone-on-tone natural fabrics is a great way to do this. Play with a mix of textures from wool blankets, linen fabric and woven cushions — all breathable, washable, durable and comfortable. Look at the features of your boat space — perhaps there’s some lovely native wood features, or brass compass or nautical element you can contrast with.

Create visual interest by combining a range of textures. Think rough and smooth, shiny and matt. Add some fur, or fringes — have fun with it!

7. Add strategic lighting

Use new lighting to your advantage to create warmth, space and atmosphere. If you don’t have a lot of natural light through windows or hatches, you may be able to add more cabin lighting and swap out old fixtures for brighter, energy-efficient bulbs. Think where accent lighting could be added to highlight specific features of your boat’s interior. A simple way to do this is by illuminating the edges of the cabin with strips of 12V LED lights. These strip lights are easy to install and an excellent way to brighten darker recessed areas. These can be tucked out of sight for indirect light, adding a gorgeous ambiance. Improved, more strategically placed lighting also makes your boat safer to use and more enjoyable (no more tripping in the dark, or wearing a head torch trying to read a book!).

Tip: A higher LED count per meter of strip gives a smoother more unified light but of course will use more power too. Common LED densities are 30/60/120 LEDs per meter (9/18/36 LEDs per foot).

8. Ditch the curtains

I’m guessing if you’re wanting to fix a dark space onboard, then there are few exterior windows — and small ones at that. Curtains add extra bulk to the space and removing these keeps the space visually simple. So if you’ve got curtains definitely remove those! If privacy is an issue, there’s slimline covers for hatches and portholes. Even a black yoga mat cut to size works well to blackout light and add insulation.

9. Hang a statement mirror

Adding strategically placed mirrors onboard can help reflect light and make your space feel much bigger. Consider hanging a mirror on the back wall of a saloon or a full-length mirror in a passageway. The challenge with mirrors is securing them well so that they don’t swing about on the wall when your boat rocks — so do check that the have the ability to be fastened at multiple points (a little foam adherence strip on the back also protects from rubbing). These mirrors below are a good size for use in a bulkhead or cabin wall, and can be well secured. And the gold looks so good with light fabrics.

Bonus tip: Consider ventilation

Creating good ventilation and airflow below deck will ensure your interior space feel clean and fresh. Open hatches and check dorades are turned toward the wind to keep good air circulation — especially important while cooking and living aboard.

Can you paint straight over varnish?

No. There’s quite a bit of prep work that goes into stripping back varnish and preparing the wood for painting. A paint specialist can recommend a good primer especially formulated for adhering to a previously varnished surface.

What sort of paint should you use?

Use a wash and wear high quality interior paints designed for kitchens and bathrooms. These work well on a boat because they’re formulated to withstand humid or damp environments. These are highly durable, water resistant, anti-fungal and easily scrubbed clean for high-wear areas (most places onboard!). You’ll need to use a proper primer and with the correct number of undercoats to achieve a finish that will last well – especially if you’re painting over sanded varnish.

I’ve seen some paints that go straight onto varnish (no sanding required) – are they any good?

I’m dubious at the claims of some of those primers and paints. I’ve tried a few brands before hoping I could skip corners by not fully sanding the lacquer (just a light scuff only) but always regretted it. Within a few months I noticed a few scratches revealing varnish (even through many layers of paint). It’s hard not to bump walls when moving gear and living in a small space – so I recommend putting in the hard work up front and sanding back varnish really well before painting.

Make sure you wear excellent mask protection as varnish dust is toxic.

Types Of Toilets On Boats

Marine toilets can be a great way to take care of business while out on the water.

While on a boat, toilets are often referred to as a “head.” Some boats come with a portable head, and others even have a fixed head.

There are a few different types of marine heads that you can get equipped on a boat.

1) Self-Contained Porta-Pottys:

A self-contained porta-potty is ideal for smaller boats. With this option, you will have to empty the small tank yourself, but you might be able to use a pump-out station at certain harbors or campgrounds.

These are often cheap and small and are ideal for small daily recreational boats. You can implement this system for less than $150.00.

You will want to make sure you have with these boats a space for privacy while using it.

Often, pontoon boats will have an area that can convert into a changing area that will provide all the privacy needed for a small portable head. Other boats might have Cuddy cabins or other privacy options.

2) Fixed Plumbing Systems:

41. Go nautical with stools and shiplap 

You must have seen the Ikea Bekvam stool on Instagram ? If you look closely, it's always creeping somewhere in the corner of seemingly every Instagrammer's room. It's not surprising, really, as it's a super versatile piece, looks stylish, and isn't expensive.

You can use it as a stool, a step ladder, or, as seen here, bathroom storage. It just adds a handy bit of extra surface space for storing toiletries or keeping folded towels. Plus you can so easily paint it to match your bathroom.

Take note of the bath towels on the hooks too – the shiplap surface gives this space a nautical feel that you just want to dive into.

42. Go faux with your houseplants

Real or fake indoor plants are a great way to add interest and personality to a bathroom if you are renting or just making do with what you have got before a renovation.

If your bathroom doesn't have windows, opting for faux plants might be the more ethical and cost-effective option, as real ones might not survive without sunlight. Or pick both in a mix of sizes and shades, the more texture they add the better.

43. Create a beachy feel with shell-inspired shades

If you live in a land-locked area with no access to a lake or sea, you may have to drive for miles and miles to get yourself to the beach. But you can save the journey and create a seaside-style bathroom with peachy hues and shell shade accessories.

45. Incorporate vintage fittings

If you prefer a more traditional vibe when it comes to your remodel, then we think the best bathroom ideas come from mixing old and new. Keep all the essentials modern – toilet, shower, etc. and then source antique (or just older) pieces that are more decorative – like this vanity unit. You could also spruce up an old roll-top bath – this can be a much cheaper option too if you have a look at the likes of Ebay .

46. Go Boho with green decor and hanging fixtures 

A bohemian bathroom style is the way to go if you have a small bathroom. Strip back on what you need and stick to just in the essentials. Plus make sure you have your storage set up perfect to avoid clutter and keep that zen, free-spirited feeling.

Think verdant walls, wood-framed mirrors, hanging pendant lights, and bathroom shelving ideas . Houseplants, no doubt, will play a huge role here too.

47. Add a natural touch with wood 

Looking for rustic bathroom ideas that stray from traditional white and monochrome and instead are more natural? Your best bet is wood. Adding wooden accents to your bathroom will make it feel warmer and avoid that cold stark feeling you can sometimes get in a bathroom. 

Wooden furniture is an obvious way to get the look, but you could also cheat wooden floors and get mock wood tiles or wood effect vinyl flooring. Complete the look with plenty of house plants.

48. Pick colorful fixtures 

And if rustic isn't your scene, and you want a colorful bathroom, then we say go for it! Colorful bathrooms are back in style and we aren't talking brown carpets and avocado suites: this year, it's all about pinks and yellows and teals.

You can go as bright as you like, but we say when it comes to the actual underlying design keep things neutral-ish so if you change your mind or styles change you don't have too much work on your hands to renovate. See in this bathroom – the bath is white, and the floors and furniture are neutral but you get that overall pink glow from the sinks and the feature wall of pink tiles.

49. Or go for an almost all white look 

We know that all white bathrooms can look a bit clinical and void of personality, but we love this white bathroom idea. It helps that there are lots of original features to bring character, but you can replicate them even in a modern bathroom – the paneling you could even DIY yourself. The bath and stool work well to break up all the white but it's still a lovely airy space.

50. Don't be afraid to go dark

And at the opposite end of the spectrum... Dark bathrooms are definitely the bathroom style of the moment. But if you think about it, they are actually a really practical choice. Plus, there are loads of different routes you could go down, from the more traditional to the super modern.

51. Choose contract tiles to add interest

You can rely on just bathroom floor tiles alone to bring interest into your bathroom. We love how the vibrant coral looks against the very stylish terrazzo here. The stripped backspace and lack of any clutter mean the tiles don't totally overwhelm the room and they are the sole focus. Definitely take that tip – if you go big on the tiles, keep everything else pretty simple.

52. Inject low-key luxury with large marble tiles 

This bathroom idea works perfectly in a smaller space because you really can't tell where the floor ends and the walls begin, which helps 'expand' the space.

53. Pick a stylish black framed shower 

Now let's look at bathroom ideas that cover more practical elements, like how to choose a shower . If we could recommend one design, in particular, it would be a walk-in shower set up with a black-framed door.

Forget bulky enclosures that break up the space, a walk-in shower that's just separated with a screen is by far a better choice, and it can work no matter what. size bathroom you are working with.

54. Use a freestanding bath to stretch space

And if you want tips on how to choose a bath , we are always of the opinion if you have the room, a freestanding bath is a great idea – and actually it can make a small bathroom feel larger by allowing you to see around and under it. 

You can get them to suit modern or traditional styles and they just add a focal point to the space – especially if you go for something bold like the yellow tub pictured here.

55. Create an immersive wet room

To create a really luxurious feel, a semi wet room design could be a good option. You will have to decide if this is the direction you want to go in from the get-go as it will dictate a lot of your early renovations.

56. Or get a similar effect with a walk-in shower 

Think walk-in showers are reserved for massive bathrooms? Think again. Walk-in showers can actually be the best option in a small bathroom. A shower enclosure would just waste space in this diddy room, whereas a walk-in shower creates a seamless feel. The partition is actually a curtain on a moveable rail that can be moved against the wall when the shower isn't in use, so clever and looks gorgeous. 

57. Bring warmth and texture with natural materials

Organic, botanical, and natural-feeling bathrooms have traditionally been challenging due to the humidity of this space, which doesn’t mix well with materials like wood, wicker, and fabric. But instead of simply filling the room with plants – you’ll have seen those classic 18-plants-in-the-bath shots if you’re on Insta – new technologies and materials mean nailing this look is easy, without compromising on practicality.

We love timber-effect porcelain tiles, which you can use on floors and walls, and luxury vinyl tile plank flooring, which feels warm underfoot. New water-based varnishes are much better quality and help protect real wood in bathrooms. 

You can even get ceramic wallpapers, which are highly durable, or you could cheat it and apply a cheap wallpaper covered in decorator's matt varnish.

58. Mix white and colored Herringbone tiles

We’re saying Sayonara to subway tiles and hello bold patterned tiles. People are definitely being bolder in the bathroom, and we’ve seen a few homeowners on Your Home Made Perfect , the BBC show, really going for it. 

Feature tile walls look great and you can really mix it up by laying the tiles in herringbone patterns, chevrons, or even laying skinny tiles vertically. I love the Ca' Pietra Lilypad tiles , which are hexagonal – another trend that isn’t going anywhere. 

Grout used to be white or white, but these days you can make a statement by using black or grey for added punch, and you can even color match your silicone. Topps Tiles and Tile Giant are great for affordable options, and you can save money by DIY-ing. Just make sure you have flat surfaces and use decent quality slow-set adhesive to give you time for mistakes!

59. Choose the right shade of gray

If you're going for an all gray bathroom – from walls to woodwork – picking the right paint shade is a must. Sometimes this isn't easy to get right from a paint chart – but if you can find a helpful assistant in the paint shop/DIY store who's mixing for you, ask which shades have yellow or pink tints in them. 

These shades will be warmer – and that's what you're looking for. So, whether you go light or dark, your room will feel welcoming, not cold. This grey above, for instance, has a discernible touch of yellow to it.

60. Coordinate the wallpaper with the bath

Gray bathroom paint needn't be limited to walls and woodwork – why not use yours to paint the underside of a bath? You don't necessarily need to match walls or wallpaper with your shade, but doing so can make a larger bathroom – or one with tall ceilings – feel just that bit more characterful and lively.

61. Match iron-grey shades with wood for warmth

If the bathroom paint color you've fallen in love with is a colder, harder shade, then there is a way to keep the room feeling warm and welcoming: and that's to add bags of texture with a warm-colored wood.

It needn't be on the floor, but a floor covering does have a big impact on how a space feels, so it's your best bet. Otherwise, you can simply incorporate wooden accessories and furniture.

62. Ditch tiles for wall paneling

Tongue-and-groove wall paneling is a brilliant alternative to wall tiles in a bathroom – and cheap too. Plus DIYers can fit it without too much trouble. Let's talk finish: your bathroom paint needs to be designed to take the moisture that's produced in a bathroom, so look for water-resistant finishes for wood and mold-resistant finishes for plasterwork.

63. Add recessed shelves

This could be something you could actually build into a current bathroom, but if you are designing your bathroom from scratch think about what areas will be boxed off and can therefore have bathroom shelving ideas added. For example in this bathroom, the plumbing above the toilet has been hidden, and shelves have been added to make the space more functional.

64. Style bathroom windows with shutters

Bathroom windows can be tricky when it comes to deciding how to dress them best. Or are they? We think not: shutters are where it's at for us. Curtains are a no (too damp in a bathroom for them). Blinds can look gorgeous but don't add the texture we're after... but shutters bring it every time when it comes to Bathroom window treatments .

There's the visual interest, they can of course be in any other color but white, and they're practical. Plus of course, we all associate them with living space, so they'll make your bathroom feel more like that kind of space than one that's separate and... sterile.

65. Shop hardware stores for small furniture

So each piece of furniture is as slim-lined as possible to make the space easier to move around, but they are all packed with loads of practical storage to keep it clutter-free.

66. Furnish awkward spaces with existing homeware

Look around for old pieces of storage that are going unloved and unused in a bedroom or living room and see if you can repurpose them in your bathroom.

Got a set of chest of drawers you were thinking of sticking on Gumtree ? They could totally work as storage for all those hair masks you claim to be part of your 'self-care' routine. Sometimes, all the drawers need is a lick of paint or sand down and there you go. 

67. Create a cozy loft with a bath under the eaves 

It can be tricky to know what to do with a loft conversion bathroom layout, ideally, the shower will be at the tallest point of the room but there's nothing wrong with having a bath slightly tucked under the eaves. It adds a nice coziness to the bathroom too and can feel lovely and cocooning when you are having a soak. 

68. Use a skylight and tiles in your loft bathroom

Bathrooms have long embraced the timeless nature of black and white decor. As the saying goes, if it ain't broke, don't fix it – and we're not straying from the trend any time soon with stylish looks like this.

Because bathroom suites are generally white, you'll need to be clever with your surfaces to introduce black without the room looking like a giant checkerboard – the safest bet is to keep the walls white, neutral, or at least plain, and to concentrate the pattern on the flooring, like with these  Oakham black pattern tiles  from Walls & Floors, or matt black fixtures like taps and showerheads.

70. Switch-up your towels between seasons

We often talk about changing your rooms with the seasons, but this can be trickier with a bathroom because how much can you really change? Living Vehicle GT39 rival’s interiors of luxury yachts, offers freedom of off-grid living on the road

Before the pandemic, we lived in a generously simple world with mobile homes catering to the bare minimum needs on the road. A bedroom, convertible living room, kitchenette, dry bathroom, and that was almost it. Most of the interior was paneled with wood and the exterior was done in aluminum for durability. Now, with the likes of Living Vehicle, a Santa Barbara, CA-based boutique travel trailer builder – that has been marrying luxury and sustainability over the years – is redefining the word: luxury mobile living with the new GT series.

Electric trailers by Living Vehicle have been close competitors to the Airstreams. These models are designed to sell a way of life that in Living Vehicle’s ideology is “sustainable, off-grid, and luxurious.” The company has ventured into a new category with the GT series fifth wheelers. These models: the flagship GT39 and the smaller-sized GT32, combine off-grid fierceness with luxury that matches the feel of a yacht on land.

Designer: Living Vehicle

Living Vehicle has always focused on developing off-grid mobile trailers that can be used for full-time living, the Cyber Trailer for instance. The GT39 may be a different unit in approach, but its fundamentals are aligned with the company’s signature style. The fifth wheeler measures 39-foot long and features an architecturally designed interior. It fits the master bedroom – with a king-size bed and panoramic windows – in the gooseneck and is apt for sleeping four to six people with a living room that transforms into a guest sleeper.

The Living Vehicle GT39 model tips the scale at 16000 lbs but has, and we cannot iterate enough, a motor yacht-style luxurious interior comprising 8-foot ceilings, hardwood flooring, powder-coated aluminum cabinets, and top-of-the-line appliances. The living room with reclining seats has a 70-inch home theater system and fireplace, just adjacent is a chef’s kitchen attached to a bar that doubles as a workspace. Next up with the bathroom with a composting toilet and a teak-paneled shower.

Stretching the interior luxury into the exterior landscapes is the fold-down deck of the GT39, which is spacious enough to be used as an outdoor dining space or an outdoor kitchen at the campsite. The fold-down deck is covered with a folding awning. The interesting element of this yacht for the road is the option of installing anywhere between 2.2 and 5 kilowatts of solar panels on the roof. Stretching the entire length and breadth of the LV model, the solar cells can extend onto the awnings for additional coverage. To enhance the self-sustaining capability, this fifth-wheeler’s solar system is supported by a hybrid backup power generator and complemented by a battery pack of 72kWh.

Since the GT39 is meant for permanent, long-term living on the road, it comes with four-season climate control, along with smart home technology, and Starlink connectivity. Living Vehicle is now taking orders for the new GT39, but the pricing for the model is undisclosed. If interested, you would have to get in touch with the company for a quote.

3D printed ceramic ink can soak up harmful chemicals and acid from water supplies

University of bath generates 3d printed ceramic ink monolith.

Engineers at the University of Bath have turned to 3D printing to remove the so-called ‘forever chemicals’ from water supplies. Using this technology, they’ve generated ceramic -infused lattices, or ‘monoliths’, that can remove at least 75 percent of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) from water, among other substances. These 3D-printed structures are made of ink mixed with ceramic indium oxide, which can bond with the acids in the water. A 3D printer squeezes out this formula and forms a lattice structure, manufacturing the monoliths.

The engineers say that because of the indium oxide and its properties that bond with the acids, chemicals in the water supplies and bodies can immediately stick to these 3D-printed structures, thus being removed from them. The team adds that the operation can be done in under three hours and that this study and method are compatible with current water treatment plants in the UK and abroad. If proven successful, the 3D-printed ceramic ink could help eliminate harmful chemicals in water.

Ceramic ink can remove up to 75 percent of chemicals

After testing, the researchers have discovered that their 3D-printed ceramic ink can remove up to 75 percent of harmful chemicals from water supplies. These monoliths even become more effective at vacuuming these perfluorooctanoic acids the more they are used. This is because the filters go through a high-temperature cleaning process after each use, which seems to improve their performance. The next step for the researchers is to study why the chemical filters work better with each use, so they plan to do more tests to figure it out.

‘Using 3D printing to create the monoliths is relatively simple, and it also means the process should be scalable. Once the monoliths are ready, you simply drop them into the water and let them do their work. It’s very exciting and something we are keen to develop further and see in use,’ says Dr. Liana Zoumpouli, a Research Associate in Bath’s Department of Chemical Engineering and a member of the Centre for Digital Manufacturing and Design.

3D printed monoliths to speed up chemical breakdown

In some places, especially in the US and Europe, there are already rules regarding how much perfluorooctanoic acid can be in drinking water and other supplies. It is one of the most common perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), and even if there are already rules in place, the scientists believe that they may not be enough, given how dangerous these chemicals can be to health. They add that stricter laws or regulations are likely to be introduced in the future to better protect people from these health risks.

These substances are known as ‘forever chemicals’ because they take a very long time to break down. In some cases, the process can even take over 1,000 years. These perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances are man-made. They are known to be harmful to reproductive, developmental, and cardiovascular systems as well as increasing the likelihood of diabetes. Some of the sources of these substances include domestic products, often with water-repellent properties, such as non-stick pans, raincoats, paints, fabrics, and firefighting foams.
