ropax catamaran ferry

Ropax Ferry

Roll-on/roll-off ferry with passenger cabins.

A ropax ferry is a ship that combines the features of a cruise ship and night cabins with a roll-on/roll-off ferry. They are also known as RoPax for their combined Roll on/Roll Off and passenger design. ROPAX FERRIES are conventional ferries with a large garage intake and a relatively large passenger capacity, with conventional diesel propulsion and a sailing speed of over 25 knots (46 km/h; 29 mph). Cabins, if existent, are normally smaller than those on cruise ships. The hull of a ROPAX Ferry is normally subdivided into several (10+) watertight compartments by automatic watertight doors. While at sea, the bow visor and ramp are locked closed by hydraulically operated cleats, where watertight seals are formed by the compression of heavy rubber gaskets. Watertight integrity is monitored continuously by the Bridge.

press release June 6, 2012

24m Catamaran Ro-Pax Ferry, Runö.

24m Catamaran Ro-Pax Ferry, Runö.

Incat Crowther announced the launch of the 24m Catamaran Ro-Pax Ferry, Runö. The vessel was recently launched by Baltic Workboats in Estonia and successfully completed sea trials.

Runö is the second Incat Crowther-designed vessel to be built by Baltic Workboats, after Vėjūnas, a 24m Catamaran Scientific Research Vessel. Runö will be operated in the Gulf of Riga, Estonia, between the mainland port of Parnu and the islands of Runhu and Saaremaa. Incat Crowther worked closely with Baltic workboats to secure the build contract for Runö, offering a vessel based on Vėjūnas, including some refinements that included the extensive use of pre-fabricated extruded panels.

In addition to passengers, Runö features a small cargo deck aft that can carry two passenger vehicles (up to 6.5m), a mini-van or deck cargo. These are loaded onto the vessel either over the hydraulically-operated stern visor. An 8t-m Guerra M 75.90A1 Deck Crane handles the loading and unloading of mixed freight. Side passenger gates forward of the aft deck lead passengers directly to the cabin, which features 60 seats. Passenger toilets are located on a central corridor, and there is a small bar to port. Large luggage racks in this corridor allow passenger to place their bags upon boarding, streamlining the process. To starboard is a crew accommodation space, featuring a mess, dedicated crew bathroom and bunk beds. There is also a large storeroom.

Upstairs, the wheelhouse features a guest lounge and navigation table. Good all-round visibility from the helm seat ensures safe berthing operations. Runö is powered by a pair of Volvo D16MH R2 main engines, each producing 751hp. It will have a cruise speed of 22 knots and achieved a top speed on trials of 24.7 knots. Strengthened structure and associated foundations have been included to allow 4-point lifting of the vessel for transportation and dry docking. Incat Crowther is proud of the support offered to Baltic Workboats that allowed them to efficiently construct a competitive vessel.

ABB and Incat Tasmania team up on lightweight hybrid-electric RoPax ferry

facebook

Incat 148E would initially be powered by a hybrid-electric solution, with greater use of batteries when shore charging infrastructure is in place.

ABB and Australian shipbuilder Incat Tasmania are to explore building a 148 meter long RoPax ferry with hybrid-electric propulsion that could be transitioned to battery power as shore charging becomes available. The announcement paves the way for ABB to supply zero-emission power and propulsion solutions and evaluate a future commercial arrangement for the 148-meter long catamaran and similar vessels.

Under a Letter of Intent signed at the Interferry event, the parties will explore building a lightweight fast ferry featuring hybrid-electric propulsion. The project seeks a transitional route to zero-emission operations for the ferry segment.

“All at Incat are extremely excited at having the opportunity to work alongside ABB,” said Robert Clifford, founder and chairman of the board, Incat Group of Companies. “This collaboration combines the world’s leading global technology company and the world’s leading lightweight shipbuilder into a partnership that is 100% focused on a completely green energy transportation solution of the future.”

“Lightweight Incat ships use up to 40% less power than an equivalent steel ship, which means up to 40% less emissions,” continued Clifford. “We’ve done extensive work in applying our excellence in ferry design to the specifics of electric propulsion. ABB is the ideal partner to help Incat realize our ambition to lead the shortsea shipping industry into a more sustainable future.”

Conceived by Revolution Design, Incat’s in house design office, the hybrid-electric ferry, designated the 148E, would be built in Australia to DNV class, operating at speeds of up to 21 knots. It would feature ABB’s Onboard DC Grid power distribution, ABB Ability Power and Energy Management System (PEMS), 800xA distributed control systems, a remote diagnostic system, and two Azipod® propulsion units enabling highly precise control and maneuverability maximizing efficiencies.

“There is no single solution where shipping’s emission challenges are concerned and we have to be imaginative in this transition to more sustainable ferry operations,” said Palemia Field, global segment manager, ferries, at ABB Marine & Ports. “Considerations of what a future ferry could or should look like and how it would operate are bringing bold thinking to market. ABB’s innovative electric solutions are an enabler for forward-looking companies like Incat.”

In the first instance, the hybrid-electric propulsion solution envisioned for the Incat 148E will involve the vessel’s diesel engine charging a shipboard battery, whose output provides the flexibility in power management to improve fuel efficiency and cut emissions. When shore charging facilities are available, Incat-built electric ferries would make greater use of batteries, with project goals envisaging installed battery power of up to 30 MWh.

BMT and Strategic Marine Vietnam team up to design an innovative solution for Pentland Ferries.

  • New 85m Ro-Pax Cat

16 October 2019

BMT Specialised Ship Design has recently designed an 85m catamaran vehicle-passenger ferry built by Strategic Marine Vietnam for family-owned Scottish ferry operator Pentland Ferries. The vessel is the latest in a series of collaborations between Strategic Marine and BMT, which now includes a variety of ferries and an extensive portfolio of windfarm support vessels, with the partnership continuing to expand. The MV Alfred was named after the father of Andrew Banks, the owner and managing director of Pentland Ferries.

John Bonafoux, Business Development Director of Specialised Ship Design at BMT, said:

“I am pleased to announce the delivery of our new 85-meter catamaran Ro-Pax ferry that was ordered by Pentland Ferries and, I would like to welcome them to the large and growing family of BMT-designed vessels. This new design adds further depth to our diversified fleet portfolio where we are currently receiving strong interest from clients around the world due to the high efficiency of these purpose-built vessel design-solutions.”

Designed by Southampton-based BMT, construction began in mid-2017 at Strategic Marine’s Vung Tau facility in Vietnam. Launched in January 2019, with sea trials over the summer, the vessel has now completed the long voyage from Vietnam and arrived at her homeport in the Orkney Islands last week.

MV Alfred will operate in the rough waters of the Pentland Firth, between Gills Bay on the Scottish mainland and St Margaret’s Hope, Orkney, with a transit time of around one hour. Entry into service is planned for later this year. The vessel will significantly expand the operator’s capacity on the route, carrying up to 430 passengers and 98 cars, or 12 lorries with 54 vehicles. Powered by four Yanmar 6EY17W engines and quad-screw propulsion, the low-emissions vessel is quiet and efficient, achieving a service speed of 16 knots. With a hull form specifically designed for the area of operation, the new boat ensures a comfortable transit for that onboard and maximum operability for the vessel’s owners.

DESCRIPTION

This is a 232’ fast, fuel efficient, freight capable, RoPax Ferry Catamaran, built by Incat in 1995. Following the delivery of the first twelve Incat wave piercing catamarans, ranging in length from 74-78 m, ferry operators in the Far East and South America sought even faster, yet more economical, vessels that could compete more effectively with air, land and sea transport infrastructure in coastal waters. This ultra high speed Class catamaran targeted this market niche with the design specifically optimized to ensure maximum fuel efficiency and speed at any given deadweight. As clear evidence of the success of this timeless “maximum fuel efficiency” design philosophy, the vessel reached speeds of 53.8 knots during sea trials using only 21.6 MW of propulsive power. This remains one of the fastest and most economical high speed vehicle ferries in the world. In highly cost effective operational service today it operates at speeds of 38-42 knots while carrying a mix of passengers, vehicles and freight. Since delivery, this catamaran has proved to be an enormously successful ferry offering unsurpassed comfort, speed, reliability and economy. It is built to Det Norske Veritas (DNV) Class with the notation DNV +1A1 HSLC R4 Car Ferry “B” EO. Aside from speed and economy some other key features of the include: Shallow draft (2.1 m) Passenger cabin consisting of First and Economy Class Separate food and beverage facilities in First and Economy Class Aft vehicle deck capable of carrying trucks and oversized vehicles Large duty free shop with three (3) cashier points Fast port turnaround (load & unload) Highly maneuverable Fast acceleration to service speed

Getting around Baikal Lake: Trains, Boats, Ferries, Buses

Ferries: irkutsk to listvyanka.

There are also 3 speed boats a day from Irkutsk river port to Listvyanka - at 8.30, 12.00 and 14.00 daily, which take about an hour and cost about €10 one way.

Ferries: Irkutsk - Olkhon Island - Ust-Barguzin (Baikal East Coast, Buryatia)

Another way is to take a speed boat from Irkutsk to Olkhon with the local VSRP (East Siberian River Transport) company. They have ferries from Irkutsk to Olkhon that depart every monday at 9.15 and arrive to Khuzhir directly at 17.15. The ferry continues to the opposite side of the lake on that same day, so you can also use it to explore the Buryatian eastern side of Baikal. The ferry back to Irkutsk on Tuesdays. This route circulates only from 7th of July until the 24th of August and they have an additional route on Wednesdays in the last week of July and the first week of August.

For up-to-date ferry schedules between Irkutsk, Okhon and Ust-Barguzin (read more about it on page 606), check out the website of VSRP Irkutsk river transport company on http://bit.ly/vsrpbaikal

A ferry to Olkhon island

Ferry to Baikal East Coast

During the summer there is also a weekly ferry connecting Ust-Barguzin (6 hours drive north from Ulan-Ude along Baikal) to the Western shore (Olkhon island, Listvyanka and Irkutsk). It takes about 2 hours to Olkhon island and about 9 hours to Irkutsk. Check out the up-to-date schedules on www.bit.ly/vsrpbaikal

Ferries at Baikal East Coast

Once you make it to Ust-Barguzin , you will want to access lots of nice hidden beaches around there. There are, however, fishermen who can give you a lift not too far for money. If you are in a village and want to sail somewhere, just go to the local port or the place where boats are and ask people if they can lift you. There is a slight chance that they will help you for free, otherwise the prices are quite reasonable - for short distance voyages around $10 for 10 minutes of sailing. There are also a taxi-boats owned by people who make money on tourists. They will ask you to pay a fortune for a minute sail. You better not deal with these people – however there are places like Snake Bay (which is nice place in fact, on the Eastern shore of Baikal) where you can’t avoid using their shitty service. If you want to have a long distance travel you should book it through a travel agency in Moscow or in Irkutsk. It will be hard to find an available boat during the high season.

Traveling with a Train

To get to Baikal itself, you might want to check our selected trains on the Trans-Siberian timetable page . Generally it takes about 4 days and costs from €150 one way for 3rd class (common carriage) to about €250-€300 one way for 2nd class (4-berth coupe). The trains are quite comfortable and OK, so it's not a big deal to travel in this way and the journey is super interesting .

What a lot of people miss, however, is that Irkutsk is not the only city on the Trans-Siberian Baikal stretch. There's also Ulan-Ude (6 hours after), which is an amazing place and it provides you access to the much less crowded East coast of Baikal lake , which is amazing if you're into quiet time in the nature and camping (although keep in mind the road is very near the lake, so if you want wild wild you have to go as far as Ust-Barguzin  - opposite of Olkhon island).

Irkutsk-Ulan-Ude railway with a number of stops on it. It takes around eight hours to get from one city to the other. The main station on the way is Sludyanka – the starting point for the trips to Arshan (Sayan mountains) and for the Circum-Baikal railway .

Circum Baikal railway starts in Sludyanka and goes to the Port Baikal (across the river from Listvyanka). The whole trip by a daily train takes about 5 hours. There are stops in every village on the way. In several villages there are small hotels where you can stay in, otherwise you can camp right on the shore. Learn more here.

Buses and Cars

There is no road around lake Baikal , however you can get by car at many points in the southern part of Baikal and drive to Olkhon island as well.

For the east coast ( Buryatia side) the good road goes up to Ust-Barguzin (about a 5-hour drive from Ulan-Ude), from where you can then take a ferry to the opposite side of the lake.

If you travel by car , you should always have enough petrol with you to get back to the petrol station. There are number of stations on the Irkutsk-Ulan-Ude road, as well as on the road along Eastern shore of Baikal (Ulan-Ude - Ust-Barguzin) and along the road from Irkutsk to Olkhon island. Diesel can be bought from the fishermen in villages. It is hard to get fuel at Olkhon Island. Most of the roads are not asphalted and you better use all-wheels-drive car. The road to Olkhon is in a good condition (except the last 60 km, where it's just not asphalted), but be prepared to stay in a several hours line to get to the ferry from the mainland to the island and back (buses have a priority – that's why it's good to go with a bus and then rent a jeep at Olkhon itslef). Also, everybody who travels around Baikal should carry a spare tire: it's not a rare sight to see someone with his tire broken on the road.

There are regular buses Irkutsk-Olkhon island . The cheapest way is to take a bus, which will take 6 to 8 hours (you will also need to take a ferry from the mainland to the island). There are 4 buses daily departing from the central bus station in Irkutsk at  8-00, 10-00, 14-00 and 17-00. Seat reservations can be made on +7 902 5772020. You can also take another bus from the Central market place in Irkutsk at 10.00. Seat reservations on +7 902 1714961. The trip costs about €20 one way.

If you're traveling from Irkutsk or Ulan-Ude to Arshan , take a minibus - they depart every 2 hours from the main train station and are much faster than standard buses.

Minibuses and Taxis

There are many privately owned minibuses following the regular buses routes. The minibus is usually faster and the ride costs more. The minibuses park at the bus stations and have no timetables. It departs as it is packed with clients. To find out where the current minibus is going to look at the windscreen – there should be a sign with a written destination on it. You should pay for the ride directly to the driver. You will be asked to pay the double price if your backpack will be to big and will be placed on the seat. You can hire the whole minibus, ask if a driver can get you to the certain place and how much money he wants for this.
