Game Changer is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. She’s an explorer yacht underpinned by a support vessel platform. She was launched in 2017 as the fourth hull in Damen Yachting’s 227-foot yacht support range. But it’s the incredible onboard amenities where her strengths lie, from the custom Airbus H130 and PADI five-star dive center to the all-new U-Boat Worx CR3 submarine collected last month from Curaçao.

Like many explorers, Game Changer has circumnavigated the world once already since her delivery. But unlike most new builds, she has already completed two refits. It’s all part of the owner’s plan. Having bought the yacht after completion, he tweaked her on delivery, then test ran her for a year before deciding on further changes in a second refit, says Captain Mike Rouse.

“It was always the plan to do the refit in two stages,” Rouse told Robb Report . “The owner wanted to work out what they did and didn’t like, and the only real way of doing that is to experience the boat firsthand for at least a year.”

The first 2018 refit fully upgraded the galley and extended the main salon. The most significant installment was the state-of-the-art dive center, with a custom air compressor. It contains 48 dive cylinders and a Hyperlite Recompression Chamber to facilitate extreme diving operations in the most remote locations. Game Changer ’s ability to function as a true expedition yacht and undertake technical diving expeditions with both scuba and submarine was central to the owner’s motivations behind buying the yacht.

In 2019, Game Changer covered 48,000 miles, much of which was spent off the beaten track in colder climates. The world tour took in South Georgia, Patagonia, the Pacific and Indonesia; areas largely driven by research-led dive expeditions. In Antarctica, the boat was joined by a British Antarctic Survey Scientist who studied fjord ice retreat patterns using the yacht’s submarine. Alongside guest experts, the crew comprises dive instructors, dive masters and a rebreather diver to carry out underwater filming, as well as submarine and helicopter pilots.

In terms of toys and equipment, Game Changer stocks some serious gear. An ROV underwater electric robotic capable of diving to 3,280-feet operates alongside the three-person submersible. But it was the six onboard tenders and a desire for better access to the water that drove some of the larger changes in the 2020 refit.

“We definitely needed a bigger swim platform, because we carry some large tenders and the setup just didn’t work,” says Rouse. A 10-foot extension on the aft deck increased Game Changer ’s overall length to 236 feet and delivered an all-new beach club with larger swim platform.

Dynamic positioning has also been fitted, which allows the yacht to stay in a specific spot with anchoring. They also installed sonar systems on both Game Changer and her 38-foot Intrepid tender to map the sea floor at depths of 3,900 feet.

“We did a lot of noise and vibration insulation throughout the entire boat and a ton of engineering upgrades to make it more efficient and easier to maintain,” he adds. Many of the changes have also helped to make the boat more charter friendly, including fully refurbished guest cabins, bathrooms and larger windows. The yacht can be chartered through Edmiston.

“We’ve had a lot of inquiries for heli-skiing and the gyro-stabilized camera that hangs off the front of our helicopter means we can do a lot of filming in remote locations,” says Rouse.

Thanks to its outstanding dive center and submersible, Game Changer has been called upon to serve as a support vessel three times for other chartered yachts. It would also make a reliable platform for researchers who want to explore the depths.

But for anyone who chooses to charter Game Changer on her own, it’s the five-star dive center and submarine capable of reaching 3,600 feet below the surface that is the big draw. “Unlike most other charter yachts, we don’t have to do rendezvous diving, which means guests aren’t reliant on what the local dive company can provide,” says Captain Rouse. “We have everything in place to run the boat as a fully licensed dive center from anywhere in the world.”

For the owner, the next stop is Central America and the Caribbean while he waits to see when the rest of the world will open back up. “He bought a boat that he can go around the world in, and that’s what he intends on doing,” says Rouse.

Dutch shipbuilder DAMEN launched its latest 70m/227ft Yacht Support vessel with helipad hangar –   YS 6911   GAME CHANGER .

Ocean Independence just welcomed one of the most exciting new yachting options to its charter fleet: Game Changer , a 226-foot Damen support vessel that can be booked alone or in tandem with a traditional charter yacht.

Game Changer is a platform for carrying extra toys, oversized tenders and helicopters, in addition to any extra staff or crew required to use them. She has a 16-knot cruising speed, a helideck and space to host parties for 250 guests.

The support vessel can cruise ahead of the mothership charter yacht, allowing crew to have all the water toys in the water and ready for guests upon arrival at new harbors along any itinerary.

How many yacht-support vessels are there? Damen has 11 either delivered or in build, but Game Changer is the first being heavily promoted for charter.

What’s the lowest weekly base rate? $220,000 (in addition to any mothership that is chartered in tandem).

Dutch shipbuilder DAMEN  has launched GAME CHANGER , its latest 70-metre DAMEN Yacht Support  vessel (227 ft) with helicopter hangar.

Available in time for the 2017 summer season, GAME CHANGER is a fantastic showcase of the Yacht Support solution for owners who want to have more fun off the beaten track, but with a significantly lower Total Cost of Ownership.

GAME CHANGER is the fourth Yacht Support vessel in the 70-metre segment following the delivery of INTREPID , ‘6711’ and GARÇON .

This latest launch also follows last year’s delivery and sale of the 55-metre showcase vessel FAST & FURIOUS (181 ft). DAMEN is now the established leader in this rapidly developing niche. In total 11 DAMEN Yacht Support vessels have been delivered or are in build.

GAME CHANGER features a fully certified helideck so owners can take larger helicopters on long range flights to their mother yachts and land safely in a wider weather window. Lowering the helicopter into the hangar protects it from the elements so it is refuelled and available for take-off without causing hassle, disruption and noise on the mother yacht.

In addition, GAME CHANGER has 250 square metres of open deck space for tenders and toys. The large deck crane makes logistics and handling simple, fast and safe. Below deck there is a further 110 square-metre storage space/dive centre. The YS 6911 has offices, facilities and accommodation for 22 crew and staff. It can carry a huge amount of extra provisions, fuel (marine, aviation and petrol), luggage and spare parts.

On board Damen's 'Game Changer'

Yacht support vessel 'game changer' has left the shipyard for london, where amels and damen formally introduce the 69m vessel to the market….

As superyacht technology and design evolves, is seems more and more owners are wanting to breach the confines of the superyacht cruising circuit for those less accessible locations, which of course call for more functional and purpose-built vessels. As a result, the last five years has belonged to the upsurge of the explorer vessel.

However, for existing superyacht owners who wish to travel further afield, selling their ‘conventional’ superyacht for a more capable explorer is no longer the only viable option, nor is it the most economical. As Damen has demonstrated with its Yacht Support range, you can completely transform the way you use your superyacht with the addition of a Yacht Support vessel. To communicate this to the market, 69m Game Changer’s maiden voyage was to London, to demonstrate her phenomenal capabilities.

Initially, her hard-hitting exterior clearly showcases the yacht’s primary purpose – it’s a kind of ‘what you see is what you get’ presence. Game Changer’ s exterior design is anything but an aesthetical masterpiece by traditional standards. However, in relation to the growing appreciation of the explorer yacht, there is certainly a place in the market for this functional and appearance. In Game Changer’ s case, there’s no place for frills – just practicality in its rawest form.

“The yacht is all about practicality,” says Victor Caminada, marketing manager at Amels, as he walks SuperyachtNews round the vessel. “The boat is rough and tough, reliable and very professional.”

With a maximum take-off weight of 5,000 kg, arguably one of the most impressive exterior features, alongside the 250sqm of deck space and 12-ton deck crane, is its high safety LY3- and MCA-certified helideck. “This arrangement derives form the offshore industry, where this is the standard practice,” Caminda says of the helideck, whcih includes a full drainage system and fire-fighting equipment, enhancing its safety standards further.

While Game Changer is an intrinsically functional vessel, the interior is still a very welcome environment for owners and crew alike. “The nickname of Yacht Support vessel Garçon among crewmembers is actually ‘crew paradise’, as there is more space, and the atmosphere is much more relaxed when there’s no owner on board,” explains Caminada. The yacht has the capacity to carry 21 crewmembers, including pilots, massage therapists and additional staff for the mothership.

The Yacht Support solution offers something which superyachts below 75m can’t really achieve without compromising valuable space on board. According to Damen, the cost of a 75m new build in comparison to an owner’s existing 55m superyacht will incur an increase in capital investment of 225 per cent, whereas the owner’s existing 55m+ superyacht with a support vessel will see a capital investment increase of only 120 per cent. But the major difference is the latter will result in a considerably larger tender and toy storage of 225sqm, in comparison to 130sqm of a 75m superyacht, as well as a combined LOA of 100m.

Overall, the level to which the yacht’s finished is more than impressive from the perspective of both crew and owner. While Game Changer isn’t faired to the same level as an Amels superyacht would be, its demonstration of sheer functionality and resilience is a truly impressive spectacle. Game Changer ‘s most interesting feature is the LY3 certified helicopter hangar to carry the air tender the whole time. The hangar protects it from the environmental. Also for commercial/charter use. Maximum weight of helicopter: 5,000 kg for operations with larger helicopters. There is also a refueling system with a 10,000-liter tank.

After the launch in 2017, GAME CHANGER got extensive modifications like new guest and crew cabins alongside a well-equipped diving center. Moreover, the vessel is now certified for operations in the Arctic and Antarctic area (IMO Polar Code).

GAME CHANGER serves as a vessel for marine conservation, ocean research, documenting ocean biodiversity and luxury dive expeditions. The certified helipad with hangar s the home for a customized Airbus H130 T2 with a state-of-the-art 8K camera by Shotover.

“Being so close to London – Tower Bridge is just 150 miles from AMELS – makes visiting the city very easy. London is an important superyacht center in its own right with a large number of clients as well as the brokerage community. We really noticed that when visitors came on board to judge the solution for themselves, they left very enthusiastic about all the possibilities that a Yacht Support vessel opens up. Last year we successfully exhibited a Yacht Support vessel in Fort Lauderdale and we hope to bring another vessel to Monaco later this year.”

GAME CHANGER, the latest boat in the YS 6911 range of yacht support vessels, was launched by Damen in February 2017.

YS 6911 design details

Based on Damen’s patented and proven SEA AXE hull design, the YS 6911 was developed in association with DAMEN Research, the Delft University of Technology, and Dutch institute MARIN.

The SEA AXE design provides high power and enhanced sea-keeping capabilities, ensuring high speeds of more than 20kt even in adverse sea conditions. The design reduces resistance by up to 15% and vertical peak accelerations by up to 75%. It integrates state-of-the-art navigation and communication systems, and offers the crew a full view of aft deck and helicopter operations.

The yacht support vessel has an overall length of 69.15m, beam of 11.5m, depth of 5.4m and maximum full load draught of 4m. The gross tonnage of the vessel is approximately 1,200t.

The 250m² open deck is fitted with a high-performance knuckle boom crane for safely launching and recovering large tenders and submersibles. It also features standard container twistlocks for rapidly dispersing modular equipment and boat cradles. The crane is capable of lifting 12t loads with a maximum outreach of 5m, and 6t loads with an outreach of 11.5m.

The vessel offers an additional 110m² of storage space below deck, which can be used to hold large quantities of marine and aviation fuel, fresh water, luggage and spare parts.

Helicopter handling

The YS 6911 features a LY3 / MCA fully-certified helideck for helicopter operations, as well as a weather-protected hangar and lift system. The vessel also integrates a helicopter workshop and supports on-board refuelling and reconditioning.

The helideck can handle a 5t-class single helicopter, such as the Eurocopter AS365 or the AgustaWestland AW109.

The hangar facility can be replaced with a luxury dive-space, which can be equipped with a certified double-lock decompression chamber, a high-pressure and enriched air production facility, and a filling station for Scuba dive cylinders.

Accommodation is also offered for divemasters and submersible pilots on-board the vessel.

Accommodation aboard YS 6911

The vessel features a customised VIP lounge with 90m² of space, while the decks feature modern interiors and artificial teak finishes.

The YS 6911 integrates offices, a hospital, a professional galley, a fitness centre, and accommodation facilities for 22 crew and staff. The accommodation spaces are equipped with modern heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.

The vessel is powered by four MTU 16V4000 M63L 1A diesel engines with a power output of 2,240BkW each, as well as two 150kW bow thrusters. The power-plant is equipped with automation, control and monitoring systems.

The propulsion system provides a maximum speed of up to 20kt and a range of 4,500nmi at a speed of 16kt.

Damen yacht support vessel Game Changer sold

The 69.15 metre  Damen  superyacht support vessel  Game Changer  has been sold and will return to Gorinchem for modifications, the Dutch yard has confirmed.

Built on speculation and launched in February 2017, Game Changer is capable of carrying an 11.3 metre Wajer tender, a 10.5 metre Damen RIB and a U-Boat Worx submersible on the main deck. She is based on the same patented Damen Sea Axe hull as 6711 and Garcon , but with a 2.04 metre stern extension to allow for a helicopter hangar.

Mark Vermeulen, product director at Damen, said: “The strength of Damen’s global business means we can build these large and sophisticated vessels on speculation, and we also have the breadth of experience and facilities to offer fast customisation with the same team that built her. So owners get a brand new Damen Yacht Support vessel that meets their unique requirements, but within a matter of months — not years.”

Game Changer 's key features include 250 square metres of open deck space for  storing tenders  and water toys via the large deck crane with a lifting capacity of 15 tonnes. A further 110 square metres of air conditioned storage space below decks creates the perfect spot for a dive centre.

What’s more, Game Changer boasts a fully certified superyacht helipad , which means that owners can travel with a larger helicopter and land in a wider range of weather conditions.

Commercial director Rose Damen added: "It’s exciting to see how these clients are using Damen vessels to realise their vision of yachting. It’s not only about the capability to do more, see more and enjoy their yachts more, but we also see that our clients enjoy spending time on their Yacht Support vessels. So it’s very important that our vessels go far beyond commercial ship standards and that’s exactly where our experience and yachting know-how sets us apart.”

With deep provision storage and quarters for 22 crew and staff, Game Changer is described by the yard as a "crew paradise". She is ideal for recuperation between shifts on the mothership, with a spacious mess area and a superyacht gym on board.

Power comes from four 3,000hp MTU 16V4000 M63L diesel engines for a top speed of 20 knots and a maximum cruising range of 4,500 nautical miles at 16 knots.

Other superyacht projects currently under development at the Dutch yard include the 55 metre YS Adventure 5009, which is due to hit the water this summer, and the 65 metre SeaXplorer — a scheduled 2019 launch. Looking even further ahead, Damen plans to launch its 75.15 metre SeaXplorer project in 2020.

Charter Damen Support Vessel ‘Game Changer’ In The Bahamas

The 69m/227ft yacht support vessel ‘Game Changer’ is available for charter in the tropical cruising grounds of the Bahamas from the end of November.

Launched in February 2017, Game Changer is the newest member of the YSV6911 fleet from Dutch yard Damen . Joining the global charter fleet last month, she is now offering charter parties the chance to have unrivalled fun while cruising in the Bahamas.

Book this new build alone or in tandem with a traditional charter yacht and be one of the first to experience her endless benefits. There is surely no better way to undertake an island-hopping adventure in the gorgeous island chain this winter.

Guests making the ultimate entrance by helicopter can land on her certified helipad. The helicopter can then be lowered below deck into the safety of an enclosed hangar with refuelling facilities on hand.

Such a feature means the hassle, disruption and noise caused by a helicopter’s arrival and departure can be eliminated from the mothership when chartering in tandem.

With 250 square metres of open deck space, she is stocked with a huge selection of brand new water toys, and a large deck crane makes logistics and handling simple, fast and safe.

Plus, she can speed ahead to the next anchorage when on a private yacht charter and unload all the water toys before the mothership’s arrival. This opens up unrivalled opportunities for getting out on the water while on vacation.

Below deck there is a further 110 square metres of storage, offices and accommodation for 12 of the charterer’s staff. Therefore, if you are chartering superyacht Game Changer for extended periods this winter, she can carry a huge amount of extra provisions and fuel.

The vessel’s huge volume also means she can host around 250 guests for on-board parties. With high quality finishes and fairing, she is sure to wow all who step aboard for glittering event charters .

New leadership program reveals first class

The Collective + SBJ Futures Cohort will gather for the first time at Sports Business Journal’s Game Changers conference on Sept. 26 in New York. The Collective, Wasserman’s women-focused impact and advisory business, has reimagined the previous CSM Mentoring Challenge, which began in 2016. The new Futures Cohort executive development program brings together 20 mid-level professionals (see list) and the sports industry’s future women leaders to support each other and work toward more intentional change.

The program’s mission is to identify, support and equip the next generation of Game Changers with the community and network necessary to push collectively and individually toward more impactful change.
