You awake in one of two master suites, one on the upper deck with 180 degree views forward and the other on the main deck. Head for the upper deck aft for a delicious breakfast before settling in the sun lounge aft to discuss the day's plans with the captain. If the morning heat is too intense, start the day in the air conditioned main saloon at the formal dining table and make plans in the lounge opposite.

After breakfast, the children race eagerly down to the portside swim platform where the deck crew has prepared all the watertoys for a morning adrenaline rush. Other guests may choose to work out in the gym, or for an easier start to the day, head for the sauna and hammam where there is a massage table too.

In the afternoon, while the captain sails you to the next amazing destination, enjoy a movie in the main deck cinema lounge or catch up on some emails in the private owner's office on the bridge deck.

As dusk falls in your new anchorage, take in the spectacular sunset with a sundowner in the foredeck lounge and toast another amazing day before sampling the chef's gastronomic extravaganza on the upper deck aft.

Regatta Yachttimers

An overview of sailing regatta watches, louis vuitton.

Louis Vuitton founded his fashion house Louis Vuitton Malletier in 1854 in Paris, France. The brand is mainly known for their luxury small leather and travel goods, but started to manufacture watches in their first workshop at La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland in 2002. The first Tambour models were launched later that year.

By 1983 Louis Vuitton was taking part in the America’s Cup and formed the Louis Vuitton Cup, a preliminary competition to select the team to sail as the challenger in the America’s Cup. In 2004 Louis Vuitton launched the Tambour LV Cup Régate   watch, ref. Q10210. Many different versions would follow in the next few years.

During the Louis Vuitton Trophy in Dubai, November 2010, the brand introduced the new Tambour Regate Navy Automatique , in a limited edition of 250 pieces. Followed by the Tambour Regate Navy , with a quartz ISA 8270 movement. Also limited to 250 pieces.

2012. With the upcoming 34 th America’s Cup in 2013, and Louis Vuitton being the official timekeeper, the brand launched two new watch models to mark the event, the Louis Vuitton Regatta America’s Cup with either an automatic mechanical or a quartz movement.

With the arrival of the extremely fast AC72 catamarans for both the Louis Vuitton Cup and the America’s Cup, the racing rules have been changed with a first gunshot 5 minutes prior to the start of the regatta. Therefore the mechanical version has a 5-minute (4 + 1) countdown, with two windows in the dial.

As major fashion house Louis Vuitton designed their LV Cup collection 2012 for sailing enthusiasts as well as urbanites seeking a nautical style (ready-to-wear, leather goods, shoes and accessories). And to mark the 10 th anniversary of the Tambour line, the LV Cup collection 2012 also contains a new regatta watch, the Tambour LV Cup Automatic Countdown . It has the LV Cup logo engraved on the back and displayed on the dial.

Tambour LV Cup Automatic Countdown.

  • Reference: Q103D0 stainless steel case, sunray navy blue dial with a navy blue alligator strap.
  • Caliber: automatic LV 138 flyback chronograph movement with a Dubois-Dépraz regatta module.

  How the countdown function works:

In 2010 Louis Vuitton had introduced the extraordinary Tambour Spin Time collection, where the hours are revealed by cubes which rotate simultaneously to show either a neutral or a numbered face thanks to a unique and patented mechanism.

In 2012 the brand launched the Louis Vuitton Tambour Spin Time Regatta  (white gold and titanium version). The innovative movement can be used either as a chronograph or as a 5-minute regatta countdown, visually indicated on the dial by 5 rotating cubes. In 2013 a pink gold version followed in a limited and numbered edition of 100 pieces.

Louis Vuitton Tambour Spin Time Regatta with white gold, pink gold and titanium case.

Model: Louis Vuitton Tambour Spin Time Regatta .

  • Reference: Q102J0 white gold case, blue sapphire dial with the LV Cup logo with a blue alligator strap (2012).
  •                    Pink gold case, a transparent grey sapphire crystal dial enabling to see the movement
  •                    with a dark grey alligator strap (2013).
  •                    Titanium case, black dial with leather/rubber strap (2014).
  • Caliber: automatic LV 156 chronograph movement.
  • Case size: Ø 45,5 mm / H 16 mm.
  • Year: 2012/2013/2014.

How the countdown function works:

The picture shows how the rotating cubes of a regular Spin Time watch are configured in the dial. Normally the 12 cubes mark the hours, but in a Tambour  Spin Time Regatta only 5 cubes are used showing the 5-minute countdown of the race.

The watch has the crown to set the time at 3 o’clock, one pusher at 2 o’clock for start/stop and one pusher at 4 o’clock for reset. Again the crown and pushers are overmolded with rubber. It has a subdial at 12 o’clock with a 30-minute register and a 12 hour register in a subdial at 6 o’clock. At 8 o’clock there’s a red pusher to choose between the ‘chrono’ or ‘regate’ function, indicated in a small aperture in the dial at 12 o’clock.

As a chronograph the watch operates normally and the cubes have no function, but by selecting the regatta function, the 5 cubes turn red and the 30-minute register will leap rightward and move the 5-minute countdown displayed in red into counter. This way the minutes before departure are taken into account in the final measured time. The countdown will be indicated by the changing colours of the five cubes on the right hand side of the dial.

Only Watch charity.

Since 2005, during the Monaco Yacht Show, generous watchmakers participate for the exceptional Only Watch charity auction, to raise money for neuromuscular diseases in general and Duchenne muscular dystrophy in particular. The concept for each contribution is to create a truly exceptional and indeed one-off piece.

In 2013 Louis Vuitton has participated in the event for the fourth time, by offering a unique Tambour Spin Time Regatta watch, designed in collaboration with the young Paul Pettavino (struggling with the disease himself) and the Louis Vuitton team.

Lürssen’s 525-foot Superyacht Blue Sets Sail

The gigantic vessel has been designed with sustainability in mind.

By Irenie Forshaw

blue 2 yacht louis vuitton

Lürssen’s sparkling new superyacht, Blue, left the shipyard in Bremen on Saturday, setting sail on her maiden voyage to Malta . Spanning 524.9 ft and weighing in at 15,320 gross tonnes, the gigantic vessel now holds the title of the fifth largest yacht in the world.

But it’s not just size that sets Blue apart in the competitive superyacht sector. The delivery of the ship marks an exciting milestone for the German shipbuilder in its quest to pave the way to a more sustainable future for yachting.

As her name would suggest, Blue has been thoughtfully designed to minimize her impact on the oceans. Lürssen worked with the new owner’s technical project management team for the project, as well as the design team from Terence Disdale , who are the brains behind both the sleek exterior and luxurious interiors.

The new superyacht is fitted with a groundbreaking diesel-electric hybrid propulsion system. Developed by Lürssen’s in-house engineering experts, the new technology comprises twin diesel engines that drive two controllable pitch propellers through individual gearboxes.

PTI/PTO units fitted to the gearboxes can be used either for electric propulsion to travel at slower speeds, or for generating electrical energy when the vessel picks up pace. As well as this innovative technology, Blue is fitted with an electric Azimuth Pod Drive, which in electric mode can be used separately, or when the PTI units are engaged, with the two propeller shafts.

These are not token efforts at going green. Rather, Lürssen has spent several years on the project in the hope of inspiring other shipbuilders to create more eco-friendly vessels.

Of course, comfort is also at the heart of the design , and Blue features an exhaust after-treatment system to reduce noise levels and nitrogen oxide emissions. Additionally, the onboard wastewater treatment plant is equipped with new membrane technology that allows treated wastewater to be safely disposed of at what Lürssen describes as ‘drinking water quality.’

All the features you would expect from the planet’s fifth- largest superyacht are present including a pair of helicopter landing sites, a spacious al fresco dining terrace and a swimming platform connected to a beach club. Besides this, very little information about the new vessel is available and images of the interiors have been kept strictly under wraps.

“To execute such a comprehensive project, an excellent team is necessary,” said the shipbuilder’s managing partner, Peter Lürssen. “We are very proud of Blue as yet another statement of Lürssen’s ability and desire to build yachts that meet all of our exacting owner’s requirements, guided by our core focus of expert engineering, beautiful design and being a proud market leader in developing sustainable technologies.”

Lürssen’s Project Blue is only the latest example of its efforts to champion sustainability. At the Monaco Yacht Show last year, the shipyard unveiled Alice : a climate-neutral yacht concept that replaced conventional diesel generators with emission-free fuel cells which generate electrical energy based on hydrogen reformed from green methanol.

While Alice was just an idea, the concept served as an important tool to spark conversations within the yachting industry around how to move toward a greener future. Lürssen is also currently in the process of building its first yacht with fuel cell technology (due for delivery in 2025) which will make it possible to anchor emission-free for 15 days or cruise 1,000 miles at slow speed. Alongside these projects, the German shipbuilder set up an innovation lab to test the installation of a marine hybrid fuel cell system on board a yacht.

Pioneering cleaner energy technologies isn’t the only way Lürssen is striving to reduce its environmental impact. The shipyard also works closely with the Blue Marine Foundation – an organization dedicated to putting at least 30% of the world’s oceans under protection by 2030 while restoring precious marine habitats and tackling unsustainable fishing practices.

In fact, Peter Lürssen personally paid for the operating costs of the Blue Marine Foundation for five years, on top of donating $2.3m to fund a project to create a marine protection area around Ascension Island in the South Atlantic Ocean.

DAY TWO OF THE LOUIS VUITTON CUP ROUND ROBIN

August 29, 2024. Louis Vuitton Cup, Race Day 1. LUNA ROSSA PRADA PIRELLI TEAM, ORIENT EXPRESS RACING TEAM

Blue skies and light winds today in Barcelona with the hope of an offshore sea-breeze filling in from the east-south-east just in time for racing in the Louis Vuitton Cup, with the first start scheduled between NYYC American Magic and Alinghi Red Bull Racing at 14:00 CET. Both teams are yet to score points in this opening Round Robin so it really matters.

blue 2 yacht louis vuitton

The news overnight concerns Emirates Team New Zealand and a statement this morning from Grant Dalton, CEO confirms that they will not be racing today: “We have assessed the damage and have now started the repair, this will continue 24 hours a day. There is some structural damage aft in the boat, but the main force was taken on the forward cradle splash. Overnight this area has been removed (in other words we have cut the piece out of the hull bottom) and the repair has started which means building a new piece of boat. It is too early at this stage to say when we will be sailing again but I have seen these guys work miracles before.”

Race Management has issued an updated Race Schedule this morning confirming the racing for the day with NYYC American Magic vs. Alinghi Red Bull Racing, Emirates Team New Zealand (not racing) vs. INEOS Britannia, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli vs. NYYC American Magic and Emirates Team New Zealand (not racing) vs. Orient Express Racing Team.

Emirates Team New Zealand further added: “Emirates Team New Zealand will not sail today but the regatta regulations require a race to start in order for the win to be awarded. Therefore Match 6 and Match 8 will consist of the start and during the first leg the race will be awarded.”

Check back here for live updates from the Louis Vuitton Cup racecourse from 14:00 CET:

NYYC American Magic (Port Entry) vs. Alinghi Red Bull Racing

blue 2 yacht louis vuitton

Two teams yet to score a point in Louis Vuitton Cup, this is a critical race for both Challengers. After a short delay due to the wind-limit, at the start it is Paul Goodison driving ‘Patriot’ in from the port entry, delivering the yacht bang on time with enough to make a clear cross on the Swiss and head out to the right-hand side of the pre-start box. Alinghi Red Bull Racing enters and gybes immediately (not easy in the light winds) to trail the Americans with both boats desperately trying to stay on the foils. Unfortunately the Swiss fall into displacement mode with just over a minute to go, whilst Magic gybes beautifully on the boundary and leads back into the start line. It’s desperate for the Swiss who try everything to get going again.

The Americans cleverly go high on the line and then dip to make a clear and unopposed start on the foils with the race – at this stage – really only against themselves. If they can stay on the foils for the duration of the race, they win. Simple as that.

By the time Alinghi Red Bull Racing get back airborne, they start at the starboard end, clear their imposed penalty, and head off to try to chase down the Americans some 550 metres behind. Paul Goodison and Tom Slingsby are keeping this smooth whilst for their Flight Control and Trim team of Michael Menninger and Andrew Campbell this is all about accuracy of flight, rising through the tacks and then dropping back down once target speeds on the opposite tack have been attained. The Swiss meanwhile are in the hope locker – hoping that Mother Nature has a say at the top of the course or down the first downwind. Good thing for the Swiss is that they can pick where they want to go on the course pressure-wise to maintain optimum flight.

American Magic elects to bear away at the starboard marker at the first windward mark and bear-away at speeds touching 38 knots in around 8-9 knots of wind speed, and head off down the first run looking for the pressure bands with a one minute and 27 seconds lead. The Americans neatly gybe on the left boundary (looking downwind) and, keeping the manoeuvres to a minimum, gybe onto starboard and head to the right boundary. Meantime, the Race Committee announced a shortening of the legs to just 1.2 nautical miles at the beginning of the first downwind leg, before shortening again to just 1.1 nautical miles before American Magic got to the first leeward gate.

Taking the starboard marker and exiting to go left initially up the second beat, American Magic are working hard to keep the boat flying. At the leeward gate, Alinghi Red Bull Racing miscalculate the layline into the starboard marker and are forced to gybe to then take the port marker. In doing so, they fall off the foils and round in displacement, desperate to speed build and get back flying. This could be super-costly for the Swiss who are really struggling in the conditions.

American Magic are almost half a leg ahead now but there’s still very much a sense that ‘this isn’t over’...and in the final quarter, the Americans survive a near-miss splashdown exiting a tack, brilliantly saved by the Flight Controllers who elect to set the ride height super-high – understandably. A flat-tack on the left boundary, brings ‘Patriot’ onto the starboard layline and set up to round the port marker to begin the downwind heading on the right where there feels like slightly more pressure. A high exit angle gybe on the right boundary sees Magic safe, just, whilst the Swiss get back on the foils treading a fine line between flight and displacement.

‘Patriot’ continue sailing tight angles across the course going boundary to boundary and at the second gybe on the left boundary, on the exit of the gybe, fall off the foils and go into displacement. Still on the second beat, Alinghi Red Bull Racing do the same and both boats are desperate to get back flying. The Race Committee announce that the finish line will now be at the end of the fourth leg giving Magic the advantage. As the Americans get back on the foils, they are forced to tack, rather than gybe around on the left boundary and fall off the foils again, but are now closer to the finish line. Speed building at 16-17 knots, the Americans are close to foiling again whilst the Swiss struggle to get up to the second windward mark.

The Americans manage to get foiling again briefly, only to fall again on a gybe with half the run still to go. The time-limit is now something that everyone is watching. Tom Slingsby can be seen standing in his cockpit, looking for any sign of breeze as they go boundary to boundary on high angles trying to speed build. The wind has shut down across the course as the Americans even try a semi-roll-gybe at the right boundary and stall out. The Americans sail into the final quarter of the downwind leg, just as Alinghi Red Bull Racing get back on their foils but still have to round the second windward mark. Speed is building on American Magic with just a few hundred metres, and they pop into flight ahead of a final gybe out by the left boundary that should bring them to the finish line. Executed well with two boards down, the Americans just get away with the gybe and sail across the finish line, again in displacement, to record the win and score their first points of the Louis Vuitton Cup.

Alinghi Red Bull Racing foil all the way down the final run to finish two minutes and 58 seconds behind.

INEOS Britannia score their second point of the Louis Vuitton Cup with a win over the non-sailing Emirates Team New Zealand after completing the pre-start sequence efficiently and starting correctly having kept high in the start box and avoiding their own wing-wash by sailing accurate straight lines and exiting manoeuvres efficiently.

No mistakes by Sir Ben Ainslie and Dylan Fletcher, helming Britannia, the race is stopped immediately post-start by the Race Committee and awarded to the British. The team sail on for a short bit of practice in the conditions.

Team New Zealand Wins the America's Cup Twice in a Row

The Louis Vuitton Cup will take place off the coast of Barcelona from August 29 to October 7. The teams participating include Ineos Britannia, Alinghi Red Bull Racing, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli, NYYC American Magic, and Orient Express Racing. The winner will take on Emirates Team New Zealand, which won this year’s edition, and will defend its title next year.

Vuitton is set to bring a good dose of luxury to the races, too. The house will craft the Louis Vuitton Cup itself and a pair of bespoke trunks to carry the two historic trophies. (The Auld Mug has been awarded to the winner of the America’s Cup since 1851, while the Louis Vuitton Cup has been presented to the winner of the eponymous competition since 1983.) The trunks will be made at LV’s atelier in Asnières, France.

“It’s with an immense sense of pride that we return to this historical competition as title partner,” Louis Vuitton president and CEO Pietro Beccari said in a statement. “Port Vell of Barcelona will be the setting for a display of elegance and power, where teams will compete with boldness, talent, and mastery on increasingly innovative yachts. These values equally reflect the spirit of Louis Vuitton and its artisans.”

Pack your bags for Barcelona, folks.

American Magic are almost half a leg ahead now but there’s still very much a sense that ‘this isn’t over’…and in the final quarter, the Americans survive a near-miss splashdown exiting a tack, brilliantly saved by the Flight Controllers who elect to set the ride height super-high – understandably.
