'Definitely a fish of a lifetime': Erie angler catches 'unicorn' species for Lake Erie

Portrait of Brian Whipkey

A Pennsylvania angler caught his ‘unicorn’ fish Sunday in Erie.

Colton Alex, 18, of Erie, was fishing in a tournament in Lake Erie when he hooked into a large Atlantic Salmon.

This type of salmon is rarely found in Lake Erie, especially larger ones. Alex reeled in a 10.4-pound fish that measured 30 inches long.

He grew up in a fishing family and has caught Atlantics elsewhere, but this is a first for him in Erie.

“This is probably the rarest catch I’ve had on Lake Erie,” he said in a telephone interview. “Definitely, it’s kind of a unicorn of a fish for sure.”

How rare are Atlantic salmon in Lake Erie?

Mark Haffley, Lake Erie Unit Fisheries biologist for the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, reports Atlantic salmon are rare in Lake Erie.

“We have seen some each year caught in our tributary fishery. They are being stocked in the southern tip of Lake Huron and that is more than likely how they are getting here,” he said through an email.

“All of the salmon being caught in Lake Erie are adding to the diversity of the catches for our anglers but with the small amount of coldwater habitat available to trout species, these few salmon being caught will continue to occur but will remain uncommon,” he said.

Salmon was a tournament surprise

Alex is an avid angler who enjoys fishing in tournaments.

“I’ve been fishing my entire life on Lake Ontario, Lake Erie, tons of tournaments,” he said, including that his father Pete Alex, owns Vision Quest Sport Fishing charters in Erie. “I’ve caught my fair share of salmon. I caught Atlantics in Ontario, but I never caught one in Erie or even seen one being caught and it was by far the biggest one I even heard of being caught."

He was fishing in a walleye and steelhead tournament with Capt. Joe Nemet of Nemesis Sport Fishing when the fish struck.

“It fought like a bigger steelhead, once it was netted, as soon as I felt the jaw, saw the jaw, I thought OK, this is a coho (salmon), but as soon as I saw the spots, I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, this is an Atlantic Salmon,” Colton Alex said.

After the catch, he focused on getting his lure back out to continue competing in the fishing tournament.

“I was excited about it but definitely more focused on the tournament. But I was more excited about it after the tournament,” he said.

His captain for the day was impressed with the catch, too. His boat went out of the Port of Erie and they were fishing in about 110 feet of water.

“The fish hit a diver rod that was about 65-feet down with a spoon,” Nemet said. “It put up a pretty good fight and we boated it. To my amazement, it had spots on it and I was like, ‘It has spots on it, that’s kind of weird.’ I’ve caught a bunch of Atlantic salmon, but usually on Lake Ontario and usually they are pretty small and they are really pretty fish and when you catch one you know that they are different,” he said, adding. “Wow, that’s crazy.”

The largest one Nemet, 46, has netted in the past was about 25 inches.

“This one was 30 inches long and 10.4 pounds. It was the biggest Atlantic salmon I’ve ever seen," he said. "If you were going to tell me I was going to catch a 10.4-pound Atlantic salmon, I would tell you it was probably going to be on Lake Ontario, not Lake Erie."

Nemet also believes the salmon may have arrived in Erie from Lake Huron. which is north of Lake Erie and adjacent to Michigan. This fish doesn’t have its adipose fin and he believes that fin is removed from Atlantics stocked in Lake Huron.

“I would say that most of the other salmon that are found in Erie, somehow made their way from Huron. They are definitely not coming up from Ontario because they can’t get up the Niagara Falls,” Nemet said. “They definitely aren't coming from the east, they have to come from the west.”

What other salmon species are caught in Lake Erie?

Other species of salmon that are occasionally found in Erie include pink, chinook (king) and coho.

“Every year, I hear of maybe just a handful of kings caught. I’ve only heard of maybe four or five Atlantic salmon caught ever on Lake Erie and when you catch them they are real small,” Nemet said. He posted a photo of the fish to social media saying it was as rare as a unicorn and one of his friends replied this is a yeti, it’s even more rare.

Nemet said the large fish was probably swimming alone as they didn’t detect others that day.

“I’ve never had multiple salmon bites on Lake Erie,” he said. “Getting salmon here is uncommon and getting an Atlantic here is even more uncommon. It’s definitely a fish of a lifetime.”

What did the angler do with the salmon?

The meat from the fish was donated to S.O.N.S. (Save Our Native Species) of Lake Erie to be used for one of the organization’s fish dinners.

Alex said he plans to have a replica mount made to preserve the memory, but “I was happy to donate it, too.” Nemet said he hopes to get a replica mount, too. “I will put one on my wall and maybe he will put one on his wall,” he said.

Alex is thankful for the catch and hopes others find salmon, too.

“It was a really cool catch and I would encourage people to go fish farther out in the lake and in deeper water if they have a goal of catching a Lake Erie salmon. Go do it. Put the time in. It’s not easy, but it’s a lot more possible than most people think,” Alex said.

TESTIMONIALS

Great afternoon aboard the Goodtime! Well done tour of Cleveland from the comfort of the boat. Any side of the boat is good. There is both covered and uncovered areas to sit. They sell food and beverage but there is also a drinking fountain.

Great experience! Our group of grad students and faculty took a narrated afternoon cruise and loved it! The narrative is really interesting--it helped us understand what we were seeing, and it gave us a real appreciation for the city and its water. The boat offered many locations for watching, sitting, and chatting. We enjoyed the route (especially the river) and saw so much we couldn't experience any other way.

Late September cruise. Perfect date night and a beautiful boat ride.

This was a surprise birthday gift for my fiancé and as well as a first time for myself to get over the fear of ever getting on a boat Let alone A SHIP! The Ride was More Smooth sailing than I thought it would be. It was very peaceful beautiful and relaxing. I would do it again with the staff that was involved! Thank you!

Best Size Boat For Lake Erie

Best Size Boat For Lake Erie | LakeWizard

Lake Erie is an amazing place to explore. But you will need to know the best size boat for Lake Erie before getting started on your adventure.

The size of the boat is important to determine the best type of boat for a unique body of water like Lake Erie. It has conditions unlike most bodies of water because of the weather in the region and the rough conditions in the open water.

Once you understand the risks of Lake Erie, choosing a boat size becomes much easier. You should aim to get a boat 21 feet or bigger to get around safely. The bigger your boat on the lake, the less you need to worry about storms, waves, or rough conditions that could damage your boat too.

Known around the world, Lake Erie can be quite intimidating to many boaters who have less experience on the water. It is the 12th largest freshwater lake in the world and it is too rough for smaller boaters. In the guide, we explain why that is true and what the best size boat for Lake Erie truly is for maximum safety.

The size of the boat is an important factor to consider when getting ready for a Lake Erie adventure. Due to some Great Lakes experience in the past, the information provided in this guide is the most accurate you will find to help you get the proper boat for your needs.

Table of contents

‍ best size boat for lake erie.

The size of a boat that is best for Lake Erie depends on its intended use and the weather conditions too. For example, if you are planning to fish, you will need a bigger boat than if you are just looking for a day out on the water.

Boats with a length of under 21 feet will be able to navigate the lake but they could face some difficulties in specific situations. We recommend getting a boat with a length greater than 21 feet to better handle Lake Erie.

The reason your boat size matters so much for Lake Erie is that the lake is notorious for stormy and rough conditions. There are regular occurrences of boat damage and the local beaches on the lake experience waves up to 25 feet .

The other thing about Lake Erie is how quickly the conditions can change too. However, you can avoid some of the conditions depending on where on the lake you will be spending most of your time. The western region of the lake is known to be less rough with smaller waves with smaller boats around 18 to 21 feet.

If you head towards the Eastern region of Lake Erie, it is full of larger boats approaching 30 feet in length. And there will be no signs of anything other than cabin cruisers capable of moving through these rough waters.

What Is The Best Boat Type For Lake Erie?

Lake Erie’s size allows for a wide range of boating activities, but it is unique because of the local conditions. This makes it extremely important to choose a proper boat type that will handle the lake swell properly.

There are a few different types of boats that can be used for Lake Erie. The best boat type for Lake Erie is dependent on what the user's needs are and what they want to do with the boat. Activities like fishing will require a different boat type than if you were hosting a large group for fun.

Center Console Fishing Boat

center-console-fishing-boat

A center console boat is a good choice for Lake Erie because it is sturdy and easy to use. This is a boat with a centered steering station and an open area on the deck.

It can accommodate plenty of people depending on the size as well. This allows you to maximize your experience safely.

They also have a large number of storage spaces that can be used for different types of equipment. The boat has enough room to store fishing equipment, bait, and anything else needed for your trip.

This boat is built tough with a durable construction too. They have the perfect shape and features to handle rough waves and water conditions.

Cabin Cruiser

A cabin cruiser is a more luxurious boat that is found on Lake Erie. They are often found in the eastern parts of the lake as well. These boats are perfect for fishing and cruising around the lake.

This is because in this area the water tends to be rough and there are stormy conditions that occur a lot too. These boats can handle the rough waters with ease because they tend to be much larger, closer to 30 feet long.

Pontoon Boat

Pontoon boats are also great for both fishing and relaxing on Lake Erie. They are versatile boats that can be used in a variety of ways, but you should be sure to have a large enough size before taking it to the open water.

Pontoon boats can be used for fishing, but they can also be used for relaxing and taking in the sights of Lake Erie. If you are looking to take in some fresh air while fishing or even if you just want to enjoy a day on the water with your family, pontoon boats are great options.

What Happens If You Take A Small Boat On Lake Erie?

If you take a small boat on Lake Erie, you will be in danger of being stuck or stranded if the swell gets too rough. This is because waves can get rough and many large boats cause them to get even bigger.

The differences in density of lakes and oceans are caused by the temperature of the water. Lakes have colder water than oceans because they are closer to land and have less sunlight exposure which causes them to have lower temperatures.

The weather in the region of Lake Erie can also cause the conditions to change quickly. If you do take a small boat out, you will be fine if you remain within the break walls but once you go outside this area into the open water you will be at risk.

Once your small boat gets too far into the open water, the waves cause the boat to rock violently and you will not be able to pick up any speed. This will either cause you to capsize or get stuck entirely.

What Else Do You Need To Boat On Lake Erie?

When you decide to take a boat on Lake Erie, it is legally required to have a Visual Distress Signal Tool on your vessel before leaving the dock. This is a device that must be approved by the US Coast Guard as a way for others to locate your boat if you were to get lost or stranded.

This is something you should not overlook as a boat owner, especially if you are taking a smaller boat closer to the 21-foot threshold on Lake Erie. It is also something you need if you intend to go into the open waters.

Is It Safe To Take A Boat On Lake Erie?

Lake Erie is a large freshwater lake in the United States but it is much different than many lakes you might be used to. If you are planning to take a boat on Lake Erie, you must know what the weather conditions are like before you go on your trip.

The waves on Lake Erie are more powerful than those on other lakes and can be very dangerous for boaters. If you are planning to take a boat on Lake Erie, it is recommended that you take one that is at least 21 feet long.

You should also consider what part of the lake you will be on. As you move east, it gets rougher and more dangerous for small boats. It is ideal to use a fiberglass boat that is more damage resistant too.

If you take the proper precautions and plan your trip the right way, you will have no issues taking a boat on Lake Erie. This is a perfectly safe family activity to enjoy during the summer months too.

Someone set Betsy DeVos’s $40 million yacht adrift on Lake Erie

“Grizzlies?”

US education secretary Betsy DeVos’s 163-foot-yacht, the “Seaquest” was untied from its moorings and set adrift in the Huron Boat Basin in northern Ohio on Saturday night by an unknown person.

No one was hurt, but the yacht’s paint job sustained $5,000 to $10,000 in large scratches and scrapes, the Toledo Blade reports , citing a police report. The boat’s captain “called police at about 6 a.m. Sunday, telling them that he and the crew realized at sunrise that someone had untied Seaquest from the dock, setting it adrift,” the paper reports. Police are looking for surveillance video to figure out who was responsible.

The Seaquest, built in 2008, is a “luxury motor yacht” worth $40 million, with room for 12 guests in cabins and 12 crew, and a maximum speed of 24 knots, according to yachtharbour.com . DeVos and her husband’s assets include “no less than 10 yachts and reportedly an interest in the shipyard that built them,” the yachting news website reports. The boat has teak decks and room for 12 crew, yachtcharterfleet.com says .

The DeVos family’s other yachts include “WindQuest,” “SunQuest,” “Kitsune,” and “Godspeed,” according to superyachtfan.com .

Captain Jim Navigates a New Career with Lake Erie Yacht Charter Business

A seasoned business veteran, Jim Dempsey saw an opportunity to leave the corporate rat race behind and become his own boss while making people happy on the water.

An avid boater for many years, this was an inviting prospect after holding several high-level innovation and product development positions throughout his career. So Jim set out to become a U.S. Coast Guard licensed master captain, gaining the required on-water hours, in-class training and testing with the U.S. Maritime Academy. Part of the comprehensive training included CPR and AED (Automated External Defibrillator) certification.

Then he purchased his second boat, a 55-foot Sundancer Sport Yacht weighing over 50,000 pounds, docked in Sandusky (Ohio) Bay. One joy ride for family and friends led to another, and Powerplay Yacht Charters was officially born in the summer of 2019.

Jim’s dream was coming true. Captain Jim was charting a new career.

“I realized there was a great business opportunity for me to share my yacht while celebrating other’s life events,” he says.

With the country hopefully moving toward a post-pandemic era, Captain Jim’s goal is to run his yacht charters up to six days a week throughout the 2021 season, which runs from mid-April thru the end of October. Check booking schedule for availability. He knows people are ready to get out of the house and enjoy some sun and fun after the yearlong grind of the COVID-19 lockdown.

“For many of my customers, this may be their only opportunity to enjoy Lake Erie on a luxury yacht, so I make sure they have the best experience possible,” Captain Jim says. “I enjoy seeing people be happy and get extra satisfaction out of offering a fun experience on the water.”

Jim developed a love for boating and the water as a youngster while fishing with his family on an Indian reservation along the St. Lawrence Seaway in upstate New York. Their Indian guide, Tom Jacobs, would refer him as “The Admiral” for ordering people to “sit down!’ in the small johnboat so it wouldn’t tip over.

In 1998, Jim helped his brother Tom find his first boat, a 22-foot Checkmate Convincor go-fast, and later Jim purchased his first Sea Ray, a 33-foot twin gas engine Sundancer cruiser in 2001. He’s been hooked on boating ever since.

Once Jim gained his USCG master captain license, he put it to good use working for MarineMax Port Clinton as delivery captain. At MarineMax,  he delivered new Azimuts, Galeons, SailFish and Sea Rays to excited customers while training them on new systems and safe operation. The highlight of Jim’s time at MarineMax was flying to New York City to pick up a new Galeon yacht, then traveling six days through the Erie and Welland Canals to Port Clinton. Jim has also captained for private owners and their vessels.

The majority of Jim’s business career involved innovation and new product development roles with likes of Fortune Brands and their brands Moen (fashion fixture company), Master Lock and ThermaTru Doors. He owns 15 patents, most of which involve plumbing fixtures, and he recently filed for another patent for an anti-viral yoga mat.

Jim led research and development for Purell hand sanitizers, soaps, wipes and surface disinfectants, so he’s well versed in the field of antimicrobials and disinfection technologies. In addition to yacht chartering, Jim runs his own consulting business focusing on technology, engineering, product development, and antimicrobial solutions — Ingenuity Engine, LLC.

Jim is ready to chart a new career course, one yacht charter at a time. Join him on PowerPlay and let the fun begin!

First built in the 1800’s the Erie Canal connected the inland waters of the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean. Running 363 miles with a 571 foot elevation change from Lake Erie to the Hudson River this man-made feat of engineering was a key improvement to this trade route, turning a two week stagecoach trip into a five day passage through 83 locks at the time.

Enlarging the canal to accommodate larger vessels over the next 100 years made the canals what they are today, cutting down the number of locks to 35 and still moving larger and larger ships.  Today you can still visit some of the old locks and infrastructure from when they first built the locks along your traverse of the Erie Canal.

biggest yacht on lake erie

You probably could spend all summer navigating the Erie Canal and the Finger Lakes because there is so much to do and see along the route. But you could also do it all in a week. We spent 18 days cruising east and absolutely loved it. We want to share with you everything you need to know about the Erie Canal.

1. OPERATING HOURS

The Erie Barge Canal opens in May each year and the exact date is dependant on the spring runoff. It closes in October but be sure to double-check their website as exact dates are subject to change. Normal operating hours are from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. but not all locks close at that time and some are open until 7 or 10 p.m. For more up-to-date info on hours visit this website: https://www.canals.ny.gov/boating/hours.html. Tolls and fees were waived during 2019 to 2021 which mean you got to explore these waterways and save yourself some money.

2. CHECKING INTO THE UNITED STATES

If you are a Canadian flagged vessel just like us you will have to check into the US on the east side of Lake Erie. The port of entry is Buffalo in the state of New York. Back in 2019 the ROAM app had many flaws and we couldn’t check into the country with it. We had to do it the old fashioned way and call Customs and Border Patrol from the Erie Basin Marina.

No officer came to inspect and we were free to enter. We only encountered a patrol boat as we approached Buffalo who wanted to make sure we had no firearms onboard and that we were going directly to the marina to check-in.

However, since 2020 we have had great success checking into the US through the ROAM app. You simply have to input all your passport information and an officer may or may not do a short video call with you. Alternatively if you enter the US from the Oswego Canal which connects to the Erie Canal you will have to check into the country in Oswego.

Since our boat is registered in Canada and is over 30 feet we have to get a little decal sticker every year. Also since we visit many ports we also ask for a cruising permit which allows our sailboat to cruise in the country for a full year. Afterwards the boat needs to leave the country for at least two weeks before you can apply for a new permit.

3. AMENITIES AND DOCK FEES

Most docks have power and water along the route. Some even have showers and laundry at a small cost. Dockage is free aside from a few places and donations are welcome in many towns. The most we spent for our 33-foot sailboat was $14 at Fairport. There also are some marinas along the canal which are a little more pricey. You can also dock at most locks along the way. Sometimes power is free and other times it’s $5 or donation based.

biggest yacht on lake erie

Extra fenders are very useful as you tend to bounce around inside the locks. A 2×6 works great between your fenders and the lock walls to protect your fenders from getting destroyed rubbing against the locks.

The locks on the Erie Canal have lines provided. Some are tied both at the top and bottom while others are only connected at the top of the locks. Use your boat hook to grab them and wearing gloves helps with the slimy lines.

If you are entering the Erie Canal from Lake Erie you will most likely go through another lock, the Black Rock Lock. This makes you avoid going down the treacherous Niagara River which has extremely strong currents.

5. BRIDGE CLEARANCE

There are many bridges along the route with a minimum clearance of 15 feet which means you need to remove anything above 15 feet including masts and antennas. Some are fixed bridges while others are lift bridges. You can usually contact the bridge operator on VHF channel 13. If the water level goes too high and that minimum clearance isn’t there they will close the canal temporarily.

6.  STEPPING THE MAST

We removed our mast at Sugarloaf Marina in Port Colborne, Ontario since this was the marina where our sailboat was. The staff is talented and careful and it’s only a four hour boat ride to Buffalo.

To install our mast we chose to do it on the Hudson River at Castleton Boat Club because it was cheap. The downfall to this is that you need to use their crane and do it yourself. Make sure you keep an eye on boats travelling on the river because the wakes on the beam can really throw a wrench into stepping your mast safely.

Removing masts and reinstalling them can be done at these locations:

On Lake Erie:

  • Sugarloaf Marina
  • Wardell Boat Yard
  • Rich Marine Sales
  • RCR Yachts Inc.

On the Hudson River:

  • Castleton Boat Club
  • Riverside Marine Services Inc.
  • Hop-O-Nose Marina

7.  CROSSING LAKE ONEIDA

Choosing your weather when crossing Lake Oneida is very important as conditions get uncomfortable in heavier winds. It is a 21 mile long lake after all, with a depth of 55 feet so the waves can get quite bad and close together.

8. NAVIGATING THE LOCKS

Usually you can contact lockmasters on VHF channel 13 but if they are not responding there are phone numbers in the Active Captain app or at the actual locks.

When the light is red do not proceed in or out of the lock and only do so when the light is green.

biggest yacht on lake erie

9. CRUISING ETIQUETTE

Be courteous to others and listen out for hailing vessels looking to pass. Typically the passing boat will ask the slower boat to slow down to allow for a quicker pass with less wake. As a rule of thumb being a slower boat if we see another boat approach we slow down to half our cruising speed.

10. ACTIVE CAPTAIN & WATERWAYS APPS

Active Captain and  Waterways are your best friends. The information these apps provide you are indispensable. Built into navigation apps like Navionics and Aquamaps, these guides give you up to date data on locks, docks, marinas, fuel, hazards to navigation, tides, currents, etc. Of course you still need to use your eyes and watch out for floating logs or anything else you could hit but as an information tool these apps are great.

If you cruise the East Coast long enough, sooner or later, someone will ask you if you have completed T he Great Loop . This is a fun filled 5,000 miles plus adventure that takes the cruiser through 16 states and Canada. It makes a wonderful one-year and spectacular two-year cruise. For an outline of the route refer to the image below.

biggest yacht on lake erie

The Great Loop is completed almost entirely in protected waters, with only a few open water passages. These open water passages can easily be crossed in good weather, and thus are enjoyable as well. Starting in Florida, the boater would proceed up the East Coast of the United States on the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway to Virginia and the Chesapeake Bay. After cruising the Chesapeake and Delaware Bays, the route goes offshore from Cape May to New York harbor.  At New York City the route proceeds north up the Hudson River to Troy, NY, then west via the Erie Canal to either Lakes Ontario or Erie. Most "loopers" take the Lake Ontario route which leads to the Trent-Severn Waterway, Georgian Bay and North Channel in Canada. Then it's Lake Michigan to Chicago. Next, the route heads south down the Illinois River to the Mississippi, down the Mississippi to the Ohio and up the Ohio a short 50 miles to the Tennessee River at Paducah, KY. Then, it's south from Paducah, KY via the Tennessee River and the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway (usually referred to as the Tenn-Tom) to Mobile Bay and the Gulf Coast.

The cruiser then heads east from Mobile following the protected waters of the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway to Fort Myers, FL. Finally, at Fort Myers the cruiser crosses Florida via the Okeechobee Waterway to Stuart, FL and completes the Great Loop.

Nearly any type of personal watercraft can be used to make this trip. Large and small boats, sailboats, trawlers, motor yacht, houseboats, canoes and jet skis have completed it. You must know your vessel's height and draft requirements.

See this story about the kayaker who completed The Great Loop in 2023.

Your vessel's characteristics will decide, to a certain extent, the route you take. If your vessel draws less than 5 feet and can clear a height of 15', there are no restrictions. You can follow any of several routes. If your vessel draws more than 8 feet or has a height requirement of more than 19'.7", you cannot make the trip. (Chicago is the limiting spot with a fixed bridge of 19' 7".) For sailboats with masts that can be un-stepped or powerboats/trawlers with high structures, some adjustment must be made to the vessels height to get it down to at least 19' and preferably 15'.

In general, height restrictions apply only after you enter the New York Canal System at Troy, NY and continue until you reach Mobile, AL on the Gulf Coast.

It is possible to put the mast of sailboats back up once the vessel has reached the Great Lakes, so the vessel can sail while cruising these waters. However, if you do put the mast back up when you enter the Great Lakes, you will have to un-step it again when you reach Chicago, IL on Lake Michigan. Mast stepping and un-stepping can be performed at marinas just before and after you enter the New York Canal System, Chicago, or Mobile, AL. Information in cruising guides recommended in this book tells you which marinas perform this service.

For vessels sailing north from Florida that draw less than 8 feet and have a height of less than 63 feet there is no need for concern until you reach the New York Canal System at Troy, NY. Before you proceed north of Troy you must get your height down to 20 feet and preferably 15 feet. Once you reach the Waterford, NY you must choose one of 2 basic routes. Via Lake Champlain your height restriction is 17' (Champlain Canal) and depth restriction is 5' (Rideau Canal). The Lake Champlain Route is longer and has more locks and is not recommended as it adds so much to your long trip already. However, if you do not plan to travel the northeast waters again or you are taking more than one year, you may want to squeeze these extra 3 canals into your plan.

The other choice, and the shorter route, via the Erie Canal, starts with a clearance of 20 feet and the water has a controlled depth of 12 feet. At mile 160 of the Erie Canal, Three Rivers, you must choose between one of three routes based on your height and depth requirements. They are in order of preference:

  • Trent-Severn Waterway
  • Complete Erie Canal
  • Welland Canal

The figure below depicts the height and depth restrictions of the three routes. As you can see, most vessels can transit the Trent-Severn Waterway. Some must go the complete Erie Canal route, but a few each year must go via the Welland Canal.

biggest yacht on lake erie

The Trent-Severn Route

A major part of your decision in choosing the Trent-Severn route is your height and depth requirements. The Trent-Severn has a controlled depth of 6 feet and height of 22 feet. However, if you draw more than 5', you must sign a waiver. The issue with a deep draft is not in the locks, but in the channel and shoaling. For vessels drawing 5' or less there is no problem. From 5 to 6' you must use extra care and get approval to enter the Trent Severn. If you cannot meet these requirements, you must choose one of the two alternatives.

The Trent-Severn Waterway provides the greatest protection, the most to see and do, and most beautiful water to cruise while crossing the Great Lakes. If you can, and do choose this route, you also avoid Lake Erie and Lake Huron while crossing the Great Lakes, thus traveling in more protected waters. The Trent-Severn route starts when you proceed north via the Oswego Canal from Three Rivers on the Erie Canal. You then cross Lake Ontario and enter the Trent-Severn Waterway at Trenton, Ontario in Canada on the northern shore. While crossing the Trent-Severn you will encounter all this historic canal has to offer including, but not limited to, lovely villages, friendly people, the famous "lift locks" and the railway lock. At the west end of the Trent-Severn Waterway you enter Georgian Bay and the area of "30,000 islands". Here you travel in protected waters that are crystal clear providing visibility down 10-12 feet. There are thousands of beautiful quiet anchorages with almost pristine conditions. Georgian Bay and the North Channel, your next destination, provide some of the best cruising waters in North America. Once you cross the North Channel, you enter the top of Lake Michigan and rejoin those boaters who chose or had to go across Lake Erie.

The Complete Erie Canal Route

If you draw more than 6 feet, your first alternative is to go completely across the Erie Canal and enter Lake Erie at Buffalo, NY. However, to proceed west of Three Rivers, mile 160 of the Erie Canal, you must have your clearance down to 15 ½ feet. The western half of the Erie Canal is rich in history and provides many free stops with water and electric. The downside of going the complete Erie Canal route (or the Welland Canal route) is Lake Erie. Over 240 miles long with few natural harbors, Lake Erie can be a burden to cross. When you stop overnight you must go into man-made harbors and often there is no place to anchor. Thus, you are forced to pay to stay in marinas or yacht clubs. Also, because Lake Erie is so large, you can only move in good weather. The prevailing southwest wind will be on the nose. Crossing Lake Erie does not provide anywhere near the interesting stops and beautiful waters that the Trent-Severn Waterway, Georgian Bay and North Channel provide.

The Welland Canal Route

If you can't go the complete Erie Canal or Trent-Severn Routes, then you will have to go through the Welland Canal. Vessels that draw more than 6 feet and have a clearance of between 15 ½ and 19 feet will have to go this way. Following this route you go north from Three Rivers, mile 160 of the Erie Canal, to Oswego on Lake Ontario via the Oswego Canal. Then you transit Lake Ontario, proceeding over 150 miles west. The same restrictions on weather and ports as those on Lake Erie, apply on Lake Ontario. To add insult to injury, when you get to the end of Lake Ontario, you must go up the Welland Canal Locks. These locks are not pleasure craft friendly. It's not that the operators are unfriendly, rather these locks primarily serve Great Lakes freighters and as a result frequent delays are experienced. In addition, because the currents in the locks are so strong you are required to have at least three adult crewmembers on board while transiting the canal going west. If you are short one or two crew members they can be hired at the lock at the Lake Ontario end, to assist you through the locks. You will need 8 to 12 hours to transit the locks and there is no stopping overnight within the Welland Canal. In other words, once committed, you keep going until you reach Lake Erie at the other end.

For more information on the height restrictions and choosing the best route for The Great Loop, purchase a printed Skipper Bob Cruising America's Great Loop or purchase a digital version in the Waterway Guide Mobile App.

I think your omission of the Lake Champlain, Montreal, Ottawa route to get to Trent Severn system is skipping some of the unique boating experiences on the "Loop". Carillon Lock, Ottawa Staircase Locks, Rideau Canal, Kingston Ontario just to name a few. The whole experience from Waterford, NY to the entrance of the Trent Severn was some of the best of the "Loop".

The NYS Canal system is best understood when you break it down by regions. The Erie at 363 miles long stretches from Waterford, just north of Albany to The Tonawanda’s, just east of Buffalo. The modern version of the Erie which celebrated its centennial in 1915 combines the natural river sections of the Mohawk and Seneca Rivers, crosses Oneida Lake, the largest lake completely within NYS as well as the man-made sections that complete the system. The scenery that you encounter along the way is as diverse as the waterway itself. From dairy farms and apple orchids to long stretches of natural scenery that you make you forget you’re in NY. You will also pass through bedroom communities of cities like Syracuse and Rochester. One of the more interesting sections is a 4-mile-long stretch west of Rochester where the Canal is cut through rock, with rock walls on both sides of the canal take a minute to consider how this section was built virtually by hand in the early 1800’s! When you arrive in Tonawanda, the current western terminus of the Canal, you could rent a car and visit Niagara Falls, or continue on the Niagara River 13 miles to the inner harbor of Buffalo where you have the opportunity to dock directly behind a Naval Destroyer at the only inland Naval Museum in the country.

From the Erie, you also have the opportunity to head north to Lake Ontario via the Oswego Canal, At Three Rivers, mile marker 160 the Oswego Canal heads north for 23 miles. Don’t miss a stay over in the village of Phoenix where undoubtable you will get a visit from the Bridge House Brats, a local youth group who spends their summers helping boaters with everything from catching your lines to running for provisions. Oswego at the mouth of Lake Ontario hosts one of the largest celebrations of the summer with its annual Harbor Fest.

Travel a little further west and at mile marker 200 on the Erie you can head south on the Cayuga / Seneca Canal. When you exit Lock 1, 4 miles south of the junction with the Erie, Cayuga Lake lies ahead, 36 miles to the south is the City of Ithaca, or head west to the historic town of Seneca Falls, birthplace of the women’s suffrage movement. Seneca Falls is one of the best stops along the Canal for boaters, with over 900’ of dockage on both the north and south sides of the Canal, boaters can enjoy free docking, electric, water, wi-fi and a boaters amenity center that offers laundry, showers, a lounge. An easy walk offers boaters access to restaurants, shops, and museums. Rent a car and tour the many wineries that surround the Finger lakes. The Cayuga / Seneca Canal continues west past the village of Waterloo, the birthplace of the memorial day celebration and eventually empties into the north end of Seneca Lake at the city of Geneva. Head south 34 miles for a visit to Watkins Glen, Seneca Falls.

The Champlain Canal which travels north from the Village of Waterford and the Hudson River follows some of the same waterways that were critical in the Revolutionary war, with historical sites located throughout the 60-mile length. The Champlain offers the scenery of the Adirondack mountains to the west and the Green Mountains of Vermont to the East. Continue to Lake Champlain and north to Canada and beyond.

No matter how you choose to boat on the Erie Canal system, you won’t be disappointed. More than 60 communities offer docking opportunities to transient boaters, most offering amenities such as electric, internet access, showers and restrooms and access to these communities. Most them are FREE.

There are three ways to boat the canal, you can use your own boat and of course depending on where your home port is will determine where you enter the canal system from. If you trailer your boat, you have a lot more options. With over 150 boat ramps and more than 100 marinas and public docks on the Canal System there are lots of options for your trip. If your boat has sleeping accommodations, your options have greatly increased, if not, or if you’re paddling the canal, you can stay at any of the B&B’s or hotels or campgrounds along the Canal. If roughing it is your desire you can dry camp for free at every one of the 57 locks along the Canal system.

The third way to enjoy the Canal System by water is to charter a boat. There are several companies along the Canal System that will rent you a boat for as little as 3 days. These options vary from a 22’ cruiser perfect for a couple to several companies which rent European Style Canal boats in sizes from 32-42 such as the one below from Mid lakes Navigation’ or how about doing a family reunion on a 60’ house boat which accommodates 14. No matter which option works for you, a trip on the Canal is a must for any NY Boater. In 2015 Lyons NY, at mile marker 220 of the Erie hosted 331 boats from 216 communities in 40 states and from Canada, Holland, Australia, England, Germany, Sweden, New Zealand, Ireland, Mexico, and South America. Start experiencing what boaters from around the country and world are finding out. In 2017 the Canal System begins the celebration of the bicentennial of the beginning of the construction of the Canal. Also in 2017 The World Canals Conference is coming to Syracuse from Sept. 25th to the 29th.

The NYS Canal system is the oldest continually operating transportation system in North America, and every year the navigation system begins in Early May and closes during the middle of November. A common message you will hear from boaters enjoying the Canal, is quiet!, don’t spread the word. those who already are in the know really want to keep it a closely guarded secret.

A boat trip on the Erie Canal, may be the best deal in cruising around! Continue to watch the New York Boater for more information as the NYS Canal system begins their bicentennial celebration starting in 2017.
