ex-pink gin now ravenger baltic 175 yacht at baltic yachts

54m Baltic 175 Ravenger completes sea trials following "transformational refit"

Previously known as Pink Gin VI,   Baltic Yachts ' 53.9-metre sailing yacht Ravenger has successfully completed sea trials in Jakobstad after relaunching following an eight-month refit at the yard's Jakobstad facilities.

Following her sale to a new owner by Edmiston and Fraser last year, the sloop checked in at Baltic Yachts for a 10-month refit period in November. The Baltic 175 was delivered in 2017 as the world's largest carbon fibre sloop-rigged sailing yacht.

Her exterior styling was penned by the owner’s team, including Finnish designer Jarkko Jämsén . Her regular maintenance and refit schedule has kept her in class, so the refit works have been largely aesthetic and performance-enhancing. This comprised major upgrades to her rig, sailplan and sailing systems. Design Unlimited is responsible for the reimagined interiors, including a restyled owner's cabin.

Designed by Judel/Vrolijk & Co and Design Unlimited, the 325GT yacht is a regular on the regatta circuit thanks to her lightweight carbon construction and is often seen flying a pink spinnaker on the water. Her mast has been rebuilt to support a more powerful sailplan with a square-top mainsail and a triple headsail configuration, plus larger code and offwind sails.

Further modifications include her bowsprit which has been extended by 1.5 metres, a replaced headstay and her running backstays which have now been fitted with deflectors.

In terms of her exterior restyle, Ravenger now has a hardtop Bimini that shelters the midships passenger cockpit (styled by Jarkko Jämsén ). Alterations are also being made to the helm stations, including modernising the ergonomics and style of the control console and adding an additional helmsman’s Bimini set on a carbon fibre tubular framework.

Meanwhile, her new interiors incorporate softer, neutral tones and light oak veneers on surfaces, including headboards and tabletops.

Accommodation remains largely the same, with the exception of the owner's cabin, which is installed with hand-carved timber furniture. The standout large fold-out balcony platforms in the saloon and owner’s cabin from her original design have been preserved. There will also be a new breakfast bar in the main saloon, in the area originally occupied by the baby grand piano.

In terms of performance, Pink Gin 's bowsprit will be extended by 1.5 metres and her single, fixed backstay will be replaced by running backstays. This allows for a modern, triple-headed sail plan for power reaching, comprising a code sail, jib and soft-luffed furling staysail which can be lowered when not in use. To complement this upgrade, all the yacht's deck winches will also be replaced, with smaller, lighter and faster drums supplied by Harken – reducing the total winch weight from 600kg to around 150kg.

Senior project managers at Baltic Yachts, Mikael Nyberg and Tommy Johansson, have led the refit works. Tommy explained: "Another focus of this project is enhancing her noise reduction solutions ensuring they remain the leading edge by implementing all the knowledge we have gained in recent projects.

He continued: "She was state of the art then, but there have been some big developments since she was delivered. For example, we have made a new bedding mount for the entire interior and installed a complete new fastening system for ceiling panels".

Nyberg added: "The boat is entering a new phase of her life. With this refit we are ensuring she is fit and ready for the next challenges that await her, be they on the race course or exploring off the beaten track".

Baltic 175 was one of the shipyard's most technically advanced yachts at the time of her delivery, with features including fold-down balconies attached to the owner's suite and a collection of Cuban artwork on board.

The news comes after the shipyard launched its Baltic 80 Custom.

Pink Gin VI: The inside story of Baltic Yachts’ all-carbon super sloop

Yachting World

  • September 9, 2020

The interior of the Baltic 175 Pink Gin VI, part-gallery, part-boutique hotel, reflects its owner’s passions. David Glenn takes a tour

The Baltic 175 Pink Gin may have captured most of the headlines for her sheer size and cleverly engineered topside balconies, but below decks a collection of Cuban art and some phenomenal styling demand equal attention.

Mark Tucker’s team at Design Unlimited in the UK worked closely with the yacht’s owner, Professor Hans Georg Näder, with whom they had cooperated on his previous Pink Gin , to produce an unusual exercise in interior styling.

Professor Näder’s fascination with Cuba and his taste in art, fashion and music helped inspire Design Unlimited to use materials rarely seen aboard a yacht. They include fish skin, sealskin, fashioned leather, bamboo, pewter and 8,600-year-old bog oak combining to create an eclectic style that takes the visitor by surprise at every turn.

Not shy of throwing a party, Professor Näder wanted to create a platform for entertaining in a variety of environments above and below deck with music, art and unusual finishes very much part of the mix.

No ordinary experience

Stepping aboard Pink Gin from a tender is no ordinary experience. Instead of taking a boarding ladder to the deck, a topsides opening balcony leads guests directly into the port side lobby, the outboard facing bulkhead of which is taken up almost entirely by artwork fashioned from metal acetone drums. It’s by Roberto Diago, the Cuban artist, whose work can also be seen in the owner’s suite.

Once through the sliding glass safety doors, turn left, or forward, to move into the lower deck saloon dominated on the port side by an extraordinary table featuring dried flowers set in clear resin. The piece is by London-based Polish artist Marcin Rusak and was a constant talking point when we were aboard. One can waste hours examining each tiny petal suspended in the table-top.

Marcin Rusak’s saloon table features flower petals set in clear resin. A baby grand is seen aft

The ornate glass chandelier above this table is a keepsake from the owner’s previous Pink Gin , as is the leather Louis Vuitton trunk furnishing the seating area opposite.

Pillars finished in salmon skin

Design for the leatherwork adorning the lifting keel casing was inspired by bookbinding and the two deck support pillars located either side of the stairway leading to the upper saloon are finished in salmon skin. To port, in the upper saloon, is an Edelweiss Sygnet piano, finished in a subtle shade of pink – or is it purple? It’s positioned to overlook the lower saloon.

Opposite is a smaller dining area furnished with a large, U-shaped custom-made Chesterfield sofa and a table made of rare bog oak, a hard, dark timber possessing a particularly rich hue. This bog wood is thought to be almost 9,000 years old and would have been retrieved from a swamp or bog, the acidic qualities of which preserve and form the colouring we see today. The oak cabin soles in this and most other areas are finished with a type of distressed paintwork that helps create a less formal atmosphere.

Don’t miss the day head

Design Unlimited sourced the unusual wallpaper for the day head

No visitor should leave without a visit to the day head. It’s decorated with a stunning bespoke wallpaper pattern of coloured fish set on a jet-black background. Design Unlimited sourced it and it will leave a lasting impression.

Forward of the main saloon are four guest cabins, one double, a twin and two tiered twins, all with en-suite bathrooms equipped with unusual taps and fittings finished in a type of oxidised metallic bronze; industrial chic might be a way of describing it.

A lobby serving the forward cabins is illuminated naturally using glass decklights by way of the mast. It features a sculpture by Roberto Fabelo, another notable Cuban artist.

Ultimate view

Of all the areas in Pink Gin ’s accommodation, it is perhaps the owner’s suite that succeeds more than any other as a living space and styling exercise, not least because of the fantastic effect created by the topside opening balcony.

This is a large, starboard-side aperture creating a stunning framed vista for the cabin’s occupants and, of course, direct access to the water. You enter the suite through an office area furnished with a desk, the top of which is finished in laser cut stingray skin and horn. There’s nothing understated about Pink Gin .

Spectacular views and direct access to the sea from the owner’s suite via a starboard opening

Informality sets the tone

This leads into the main sleeping accommodation furnished with a king-sized double, the base of which is constructed of bamboo. What is referred to as an ‘art wall’, facing the bed, is dominated by another work by Roberto Diago, this time featuring coarsely finished painted timber from old Cuban fishing boats. This sets the tone for a cabin in which the style is interesting and challenging rather than predictable.

The ‘his and hers’ full-width head and shower room again features the industrial chic styling seen elsewhere in the yacht. It is lined with what look like substantial white tiles, complete with heavy-duty grouting. In fact, the finish comes in composite sheets, made by Baltic, which are notably light.

The effect is remarkable. Another stunning feature in the owner’s suite and this time in a walk-in wardrobe and dressing room, is a carpet using a pattern inspiration taken from one of Professor Näder’s favourite French scarfs.

Roberto Diago’s acetone drum artwork greets visitors boarding via the port side

All the crew accommodation, plus one other large guest cabin are located aft. One of the many advantages of the port side opening into the lobby is that the crew and particularly the galley staff can, if necessary, transfer stores quickly and easily from a tender.

Turn right, or aft, and you step immediately into the large galley, which has its own style comprising granite counter tops that no doubt had the weight police in tears, and composite cabinet doors adorned with what is made to look like a hammered metal finish. There is sleeping accommodation and a mess area for up to nine crew.

Bog oak and pewter trim

On deck there is no let up in the quest for eye-catching style. The aged bog oak can again be seen in the cap rail and the bar occupying the middle of three cockpit areas. The main cockpit table is by I Vassalletti, master craftsmen from Tuscany who have used waxed teak and pewter in its construction. The aforementioned sealskin is used to finish the handrails around the bar.

The cockpit is illuminated by two vast Murano glass chandeliers suspended from the boom. They are so heavy they need to be lifted into place with a block and tackle. Design Unlimited in their press release state: ‘ Pink Gin is a yacht that cannot be categorised within existing superyacht parameters’. It’s quite a claim and they might be right.

Oversize load: 54m 'Pink Gin VI' on the road

The baltic 175, the world’s largest carbon fibre sloop, embarks on an unusual maiden voyage. by road….

Image for article Oversize load: 54m 'Pink Gin VI' on the road

The all-carbon composite, 160-ton, silver sloop was transported over a distance of 21km at an average speed of about 10km/hr by a specialist low-loader from Baltic Yachts’ inland facility at Bosund, Finland, to its waterfront yard in Jakobstad in preparation for final fitting out and launching on 12 May.

Baltic Yachts was given permission to widen the road in places and temporarily remove traffic signs so that the unusual load could travel the route safely. She is now awaiting the stepping of her 67.9m carbon fibre mast and installation of her 71-ton, two-stage lifting keel. Delivery to her serial owner, Professor Hans Georg Näder (profiled in issue #176 of The Superyacht Report and pictured above) is scheduled to take place in mid-summer.

Näder holds an 80 per cent stake in Baltic Yachts and the new yacht is his sixth vessel of the same name. As CEO of the Ottobock medical technology group based in Germany, he views the superyacht industry as fertile ground for disruptive design and technology, and  Pink Gin VI  is a prime example of this philosophy at work. With naval architecture by Judel/Vrolijk and interior design and styling by Design Unlimited, key features include two balconies that fold out to form openings in her topsides, unusual features in a sailing yacht.

But her innovative design goes beyond size and the use of advanced composites in almost every aspect of her construction. The yacht will also feature Baltic’s Force Feedback System, a revolutionary electronic steering package derived from the automotive industry that mimics the nuances of load and movement.

One of Näder’s first actions on acquiring a majority stake in the company was to install Henry Hawkins, his former captain, as CEO. To reignite the Finnish brand in today’s challenging market, they are now taking Baltic into more unfamiliar motoryacht territory.

“Back in 2013, the management team was challenged to look at its reliance on big custom sailboat projects, and the peaks and troughs that come with that,” explains Hawkins. “We were led by Professor Näder to pursue new partners and series projects that still remain true to the Baltic ethos in terms of quality and branding.”

Sailing Yacht Pink Gin VI

Pink Gin VI

The Baltic 175, Pink Gin VI, was delivered to her owner in July 2017 and is the largest carbon fibre sloop-rigged sailing yacht in the world.

We are delighted to have completed the interior design and, in collaboration with naval architects Judel/Vrolijk, the exterior styling, for this new superyacht that embodies all the timeless qualities and eclectic touches of the Pink Gin lifestyle that has been admired by so many.

Select materials have been employed to create a strikingly provocative feel with elegant, cosy touches for the owner’s comfort during his worldwide cruising.

Innovations include the installation of two hull doors, one amidships on the port side as a guest entrance and the second forward on the starboard side opening out from the owner’s cabin. At the time, this combination was a first for a sailing yacht.

We also divided the extensive cockpit area into three zones; one has a dining and bar area directly connected to the galley, the second is for steering and navigation and the third, set aft, is for relaxation.

How Is Gin Made?

Wondering how gin is made?

Any gin starts life as a neutral (often grain-based) spirit. It’s essentially pure ethanol, and then flavours are added through a process called re-distillation. Gin can be made in a column or pot still.

We like to think of gin as “vodka steeped in an aromatic tea bag.” Expert distillers essentially heat pure alcohol (vodka) so it passes through a large “tea bag” filled with unique spices, herbs and citrus peel. When the pure alcohol comes in contact with this bundle of flavourful ingredients it takes on a unique gin flavour.

The flavourings can be steeped for as long as 48 hours, although some producers will distill the liquid almost immediately. Once completed, water is added to reduce the distillate to bottling strength.

Prepare an easy Moscow Mule with Gin at home by using a bottle produced by an award-winning distillery.

Gin Ingredients

So what are the most common ingredients in gin?

Gin derives its predominant flavour from juniper berries, also known as juniperus communis.

Other popular botanicals or flavourings used in gin making, besides the required juniper, often include citrus elements, such as lemon and bitter orange peel, as well as a combination of other spices, which may include anise, angelica root and seed, orris root, licorice root, cinnamon, almond, cubeb, savory, lime peel, grapefruit peel, dragon eye, saffron, baobab, frankincense, coriander, grains of paradise, nutmeg and cassia bark.

The different combinations and concentrations of these aromatic botanicals in the distillation process cause the variations in taste among different gin brands.

Our favourite premium gins to use when preparing a Moscow Mule with Gin is Bombay Sapphire, Aviation Gin and Tanqueray.

Ingredients you'll need to make our Gin Moscow Mule drink recipe.

Best Selling Gin

Gin has certainly enjoyed a boom in popularity at cocktail bars in recent years. You’ll find fantastic premium gins distilled from  Scotland  to  Muskoka . Here are some of the  world’s best selling gins  and some of our local small batch favourites:

  • Gordon’s Gin : The world’s top selling gin brand is owned by Diageo. The brand’s pink iteration has undoubtedly helped to fuel its success. Gordon’s has also unveiled a line of new innovative products including two “ultra-low-alcohol” pre-mixed gin and tonic sparkling beverages and Gordon’s Gin-infused popsicles.
  • Bombay Sapphire Gin : Bacardi-owned Bombay Sapphire is one of the worlds best-selling gins. Bombay Sapphire kicked off a new limited edition range with the launch of a gin inspired by summer in the English countryside.
  • Tanqueray : Diageo-owned Tanqueray launched a new marketing campaign developed to shift consumers’ attention from “gimmicks” to flavour and unveiled a range of bottled ready-to-drink gin and tonics, made with its London Dry Gin and Flor de Sevilla Distilled Gin.
  • Beefeater Gin : Pernod Ricard’s flagship gin brand is Beefeater. The brand launched strawberry-flavoured Beefeater Pink in 2018 and further expanded its portfolio with the debut of a new blood orange-flavoured gin.
  • Seagram’s : Pernod Ricard-owned Seagram’s is a top seller having recently purchased  Italian  brand Malfy Gin.
  • Hendrick’s Gin : Opened the door to its £13 million Gin Palace in 2018, allowing the brand to double its capacity to two million cases annually. The Scottish brand has also added to its portfolio with the launch of the limited edition summer solstice-inspired Midsummer Solstice gin.
  • Edinburgh Gin :  This craft distillery in  Edinburgh  produces a parade of flavoured gin bottles including rhubarb & ginger gin, raspberry gin, bramble & honey gin, black currant & anise, strawberry & pink peppercorn and pomegranate & rose.
  • Dillon’s Distillery : This  Beamsville  producer makes small batch gins including rose gin, cherry gin and strawberry gin.
  • Muskoka Brewery : This Ontario craft  brewery  produces a London Dry and spicy pink peppercorn gin.

Our easy Gin Moscow Mule recipe features lime, simple syrup and mint.

Travel to Taste the World’s Best Gins

There’s no better way to familiarize yourself with the best Gin Moscow Mule then by planning a vacation to visit the world’s best gin distilleries.

The world’s most famous gins can be found in the United Kingdom as well as neighbouring  Ireland . The booming gin trend has produced a high demand for premium gins produced by distilleries in  Canada  and  America .

We’ve visited a handful of gin distilleries in Britain as well as a chic gin cocktail bar at the  Shangri-La Hotel in Taipei . The gin craze has officially travelled from England to  North America ,  Asia  and beyond!

In Scotland we visited Edinburgh Gin for a tour and tasting before enjoying a road trip to the  Isle of Islay , which is best known for its famous  Islay whisky distilleries . One of the  best things to do on the Isle of Islay  is pay a visit to Bruichladdich Distillery, which produces its signature whisky as well as Botanist Gin.

In  Brighton  we visited a tiny micro-distillery called Brighton Gin, one of the  best things to do in Brighton  for G&T fans. We also stayed at the luxurious  Four Seasons Hotel Hampshire  to sip our way through the jaw-dropping home of renowned Bombay Sapphire.

Looking to plan the ultimate road trip of  Canada  to discover the best gins?

Our favourite Canadian gins include Ungava in  Quebec , Tawse and Dillon’s in  Niagara ,  Muskoka Brewery  in  Ontario  cottage country, Kinsip House of Fine Spirits in  Prince Edward County , North of 7 in  Ottawa , Dixon’s in  Guelph , Eau Claire Distillery in  Alberta , Blackfox in  Saskatoon , Ironworks Gin in  Nova Scotia  and Long Table Distillery in  British Columbia .

Our Gin Moscow Mule requires a citrus juicer, cocktail shaker and ice.

Best Bartender Tools & Cocktail Equipment

Before hosting a swanky Moscow Mule with Gin drink soiree you’ll need to ensure you have the best bartender tools and cocktail equipment.

  • Cocktail Kit : cocktail kits are the perfect gift for newbie mixology fans as they include basic bartender tools like a jigger, shaker and spoon.
  • Cocktail Shaker : a bartender’s best friend. Purchase a premium cocktail shaker to muddle or shake up your favourite pink gin cocktails.
  • Cocktail Glassware : make sure your bar is stocked with a selection of unique glassware to show off your favourite cocktail creations.
  • Hawthorne Strainer :  this unique strainer features tightly wound coils and perforated holes. It keeps ice and other large ingredients like lime wedges in your cocktail shaker rather than in the glass.
  • Bar Spoons : slender and long bar spoons are a must-have when stirring drinks.
  • Bottle Opener : easily open bottles of beer or cider with the flick of your wrist or purchase a corkscrew for fine wine.
  • Pouring Spout : once you’ve opened a new bottle of gin insert these affordable pourers to make cocktail assembly a breeze.
  • Cutting Board : purchase a petite cutting board for your bar to slice garnishes or citrus wedges like lime, orange, lemon or grapefruit.
  • Ice Bucket : chill bottles of gin quickly in an ice bucket or keep by the bar when muddling gin mixers into cool creations.
  • Ice Crusher : fans of the Mint Julep love an ice crusher.
  • Ice Cube Kit:  we suggest purchasing a selection of ice cube trays. Silicone styles are our favourite as they’re easy to clean and are available in various shapes and sizes.
  • Jigger : use a jigger to accurately measure spirits, juices, syrups and shrubs.
  • Juicer : invest in an electronic juicer or buy an affordable hand-held to easily juice fresh citrus like lemons and limes.
  • Muddler : fans of the Mojito love a sturdy muddler to mix mint and lime. Muddler’s are handy for any cocktail featuring ingredients that need a pounding like fresh herbs or citrus wedges.
  • Citrus Peeler  &  Zester : adorn your craft cocktails with a thick citrus peel or finer ribbons of lime or lemon zest.
  • Rimmer : Bloody Mary and Caesar lovers should outfit their bar with a handy rimmer for salting and sugaring glassware.

Our Moscow Mule with Gin is garnished with a lime slice and mint leaves.

Moscow Mule with Gin Ingredients

Our quick & easy homemade Moscow Mule with Gin recipe is made with fresh and premium ingredients:

  • Gin : we suggest using Bombay Sapphire, Aviation Gin or Tanqueray.
  • Ginger Beer : use a Caribbean style non-alcoholic ginger beer such as Fever Tree or The Great Jamaican Ginger Beer Co .
  • Simple Syrup : we prepare our own homemade simple syrup but you could add an additional ginger zing with Organic Ginger Syrup by The Ginger People .
  • Lime Juice : we always suggest juicing fresh limes as you’ll taste the difference. Do not use store bought lime juice!
  • Mint : pluck fresh mint from your garden or purchase a few sprigs at your grocery store or farmers market.

Serve Moscow Mule with Gin in the summer on a hot day.

Moscow Mule with Gin Cocktail Tips

This cocktail recipe is easy to make at home, ready to serve in under 10 minutes.

We love serving our Moscow Mule with Gin recipe in the Spring and Summer. The refreshing gin cocktail is a crowd pleaser at garden parties, family barbecues and cottage cocktail hours.

Our Moscow Mule with Gin recipe serves one person. If you’re hosting a large gathering feel free to multiply the ingredients by the number of guests and muddle the drink in a punch bowl or jug rather than a cocktail shaker.

If you don’t have access to fresh mint feel free to substitute for basil.

PINK GIN SAILING YACHT OF THE YEAR AT WORLD SUPERYACHT AWARDS

21 may 2018.

baltic yachts pink gin 175

The Baltic 175 Pink Gin, the world’s largest carbon fibre sloop, has been voted the Sailing Yacht of the Year at the prestigious World Superyacht Awards 2018.  She also won the Sailing Yachts 50m and Above category making it a glittering achievement for the silver-hulled sloop.

The awards were made at a gala event at the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence last weekend and marked the fifth year in succession in which a Baltic Yachts-built vessel has won a WSA award. Pink Gin follows in the wake of multi-award winning Baltic Yachts Inukshuk, WinWin, Nikata and My Song.

The 53.9m, 235-ton Pink Gin beat five of the world’s finest sailing yachts to take the overall award and in her class she was given the award ahead of the 58m Ngoni and the 58.6m Seven. The Awards panel commented:

“ Pink Gin’s hull and rig are a triumph of structural engineering in that her fore and aft deflection is a mere 76mm, despite a 300-tonne rig loading.“ “The two large hull openings – a guests’ boarding platform to port and a balcony in the master cabin forward – further add to the complexity of this engineering.”

Founder of Baltic Yachts (right) Per-Göran Johansson and owner of Baltic 175 Pink Gin Prof. Hans Georg Näder engaged in deep discussion about all things yachting.

Since Pink Gin’s launch in Jakobstad, Finland in June 2017, she has crossed the Atlantic twice, visited South America, the Caribbean and the Mediterranean and is now planning a passage through the Baltic. The yacht’s owner,  Professor Hans Georg Nader , a longstanding client of Baltic Yachts, said:

“Pink Gin has already cruised more than 25,000 nautical miles in the 10 months since her launch reflecting the success of a highly complex design and build project – I really love this beautiful sailing yacht.” “The World Superyacht Awards not only provide the opportunity to recognise the very best in superyachting, but also contribute to the effort to improve, innovate and sharpen the leading edge of superyacht design in all its spheres. “
“Only by breaking new boundaries will superyachting continue to thrive to meet the demands of owners looking for new ideas, better and safer ways of operating yachts and, above all, creating the very best bespoke product possible.”

The significant engineering challenges presented by Pink Gin’s hull openings were met by Baltic’s in-house experts, specialist structural engineers Gurit and the yacht’s naval architects judel/vrolijk & co.  Rolf Vrolijk said of Pink Gin’s achievement:

“We are very proud of that we were part of the team that created this masterpiece.  Pink Gin represents everything that makes it an award-winning superyacht.”

Baltic 175 Pink Gin’s highly individual interior, featuring unusual finishes and stunning works by Cuban artists, is by UK-based Design Unlimited who worked closely with the owner on this and previous yachts.  Mark Tucker of Design Unlimited commented:

“We are delighted that Pink Gin has been judged Sailing Yacht of the Year. It is a tremendous accolade and is a deserved reflection of the great team that designed and built her.”

Baltic Yachts CEO Henry Hawkins added:

“This is the icing on the cake for one of the most significant yachts ever launched by us and recognition of the remarkable skills the Baltic Yachts Family possesses. Baltic 175 Pink Gin is unique and wherever she travels in the world she will turn heads.”
