A yacht owned by an Indian billionaire fired shots at Yemen's Coast Guard after mistaking them for pirates
- Security guards on a pleasure yacht shot at the Yemeni Coast Guard in the Gulf of Aden on Friday.
- The guards said they mistook the Coast Guard for pirates, the Associated Press reported.
- The yacht involved was the 117-year-old Kalizma, which was once owned by Elizabeth Taylor.
A famous yacht once owned by Hollywood actors Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor was caught in a skirmish off the coast of Yemen, on Friday.
Security guards on the 117-year-old super yacht, known as Kalizma and which is now owned by Indian billionaire Shirish Saraf , fired at an approaching Yemeni Coast Guard vessel after mistaking them for pirates, DW reported.
One Yemeni Coast Guard member was killed in the intense gunfire that followed. About 200 rounds of ammunition were exchanged, the Associated Press reported.
While the Gulf of Aden is a major trade route, it is also a hotbed for pirates, mostly coming from nearby Somalia, Marine Insight reported.
The AP, citing a brief from Ambrey, a maritime intelligence company, reported that the Yemeni Coast Guard approached the yacht after it failed to respond to radio calls. The Yemeni Coast Guard told Ambery that the armed men on board began to shoot as they approached.
The Yemeni Coast Guard returned fire and chased the yacht for almost an hour until it finally responded to radio calls, clearing up the misunderstanding, the AP reported.
The Coast Guard said the boat had been acting "in a very suspicious manner" because it had armed men and was approaching very close to the Yemeni coast, according to a statement obtained by local outlet Aden AlGad. Satellite data reviewed by the AP showed the Kalizma close to the coast.
The owner of Mumbai's West Coast Marine Yacht Services, which manages the yacht, insisted that pirates had attacked the yacht, the AP reported.
"If it was the Yemeni Coast Guard, why did they open fire?" Aashim Mongia told the AP.

A Superyacht and the Yemeni Coast Guard Got Into a Deadly Shootout. Here’s What We Know.
Last Friday’s shootout between the crew of a vintage motoryacht, the 165-foot Kalizma and Yemeni Coast Guard (YCG), continues to raise more questions than answers, though more details have emerged. The Associated Press reported that the three-man security team on the yacht, once owned by Richard Burton, believed that two small, unmarked skiffs pursuing the vessel were pirates. Aashim Mongia, the yacht’s manager, told the wire service there was no chance of “mistaken identity” and that the boats were pirates masquerading as security forces. “If it was the Yemeni Coast Guard, why did they open fire?” Mongia asked, per the AP.
The yacht’s owner Shirish Saraf said that the vessel was on its way to Egypt through the Gulf of Aden and was chased by the smaller vessels for four hours. It remains unclear which side started the firefight, but witnesses on board the vessel said that over 150 rounds were exchanged. The YCG issued a statement today saying that their “patrol boats introduced themselves and tried to communicate with the yacht via the VHF radio-bridge to bridge COMMS, but the yacht captain did not respond to the repeated calls.”

Boat of the Week: This Epic 292-Foot Superyacht Just Cruised Around the World. Now It's Up for Sale for $195 Million.
This Feather-Light New Sailing Yacht Is Made Entirely of Carbon Fiber
The yacht, said the YCG, was not flying a flag and was sailing in Yemeni territorial waters. After hailing the vessel, the statement said, Kalizma increased its speed and fired on the coast guard vessels, which returned fire. One Yemeni soldier was killed and others were wounded, with damage to the vessels. One of the yacht’s security guards was reportedly shot in the neck. Bullet holes were photographed across Kalizma ’s wooden hull.
Kalizma ‘s managers say Indian aircraft patrolling the area identified multiple pirate skiffs, and that other distress calls regarding pirates had been made from merchant ships. The team said that the yacht made repeated but unanswered calls to the other vessels and that the vessels had no AIS tracking numbers.
The YCG said in the statement that “the Yemeni government reserves its rights regarding what resulted from the incident, as the yacht entered the territorial waters of Yemen and was sailing without showing a flag.”
Whether this is a question of mistaken identify on behalf of the yacht crew or a legitimate pirate threat is still unclear. It’s also not clear how much damage the yacht sustained.
Kalizma was built in 1906. Burton bought the vessel in 1967 for $220,000. The boat was later purchased by Saraf, an Indian investor who owns Samena Capital. The vessel is able to accommodate up to 10 guests, with 10 crew. It was completely refurbished in 2020, according to its website, with both new interior and exterior layouts.

Yacht once owned by Richard Burton in shootout off Yemen coast
Yemeni authorities said ‘suspicious’ and unresponsive ship opened fire, while ship manager reports clash with pirates
Armed guards aboard a yacht once owned by the late Welsh actor Richard Burton have fired on approaching ships in the Gulf of Aden, prompting an intense gunfight. Yemeni authorities said the guards mistakenly opened fire on a Coast Guard vessel but the ship’s manager insisted they had clashed with pirates.
The shooting reportedly killed one Yemeni Coast Guard member and wounded another person in a hail of gunfire – the guards are said to have shot as many as 200 rounds of ammunition. The incident shows the danger faced by both shippers and security forces in the waters off the Arab world’s poorest country, even as it remains crucial for global commerce.
Details of what happened to the Kalizma remain unclear and contested, hours after the incident. The British military’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations initially reported it as an attack with gunfire off Nishtun, in Yemen ’s far east near the border with Oman.
But later, the British military operation providing support to ships across the Mideast described the attack in the Gulf of Aden as being “confirmed by authorities as government agency activity”, without elaborating.
Ambrey, a maritime intelligence company, said in a brief that a Yemeni Coast Guard contingent had approached a Cook Islands-flagged yacht that hadn’t responded to radio calls.
According to the Coast Guard, “an armed security team … onboard the yacht then opened fire on the approaching Yemenis and attempted to escape perceived pirates,” Ambrey said. The Coast Guard “returned fire and followed the yacht for approximately an hour until communications with the yacht could be established and the misunderstanding between the parties resolved”.
Ambrey said one Yemeni Coast Guard member was killed. A later statement from the Yemeni Coast Guard, posted online, acknowledged the death and said its forces along with Yemen’s navy tried to stop the Kalizma as it was operating in a “very suspicious way” close to the shore and did not answer radio calls.
“The yacht penetrated territorial waters and sailed in them without raising the flag of the yacht’s country, as well as refused to respond and stop in clear violation of international maritime law,” the Yemeni Coast Guard said.
Aashim Mongia, the owner of Mumbai’s West Coast Marine Yacht Services, which manages the Kalizma, told The Associated Press that one of the guards on board the vessel suffered a gunshot wound to the shoulder. He insisted that “pirates” attacked the vessel first and came back in several waves to try to take the Kalizma, forcing the ship’s three guards to fire more than 200 rounds to protect the nine crew on board.
“If it was the Yemeni Coast Guard, why did they open fire?” Mongia asked.
Photos from the ship showed what appeared to be bullet holes from small arms fire scattered across the luxurious Kalizma.
Initially built in 1906, the Kalizma was bought by Burton for $220,000 in 1967. It was on board the ship where he gave actor and his twice-wife Elizabeth Taylor a 69.42-carat, pear-shaped diamond now known as the Taylor-Burton Diamond.
The ship later was bought by Indian investor Shirish Saraf, according to a profile by magazine Boat International. Requests for comment to Saraf’s investment firm Samena Capital were not answered.
Nishtun is held by forces allied to Yemen’s internationally recognised government, which is backed by a Saudi-led coalition. The Gulf of Aden is a crucial route for global trade and has seen attacks attributed to Yemen’s Iranian-backed Houthi rebels during the country’s yearslong civil war. Somali pirate attacks that once plagued the region have mostly stopped in recent years.
However, attacks have happened there before. In December 2020, a mysterious attack targeted a cargo ship off Nishtun. In Yemen’s war, bomb-carrying drone boats, as well as sea mines, have been used.

Superyacht Private Security Engaged In A Gun Battle With Pirates Off The Coast Of Yemen
The Gulf of Aden is a remarkably dangerous stretch of water between Africa and the Middle East, well-known for the pirates that patrol its waters so regularly that there’s actually a pirate stock exchange found in Somalia . Which is why it’s a rather strange route for the 50-metre superyacht Kalizma to have taken on its way to Egypt. But last week, in what is believed to have been a case of mistaken identity off the coast of Yemen, an intense gun battle broke out between superyacht private security and supposedly pirates.
When the gunsmoke cleared from the hundreds of rounds of ammunition that were traded by the two parties, one man was dead and another wounded. Kalizma , on the other hand, suffered significant damage to its superstructure and guest quarters. What isn’t clear at this stage, however, is who pulled the trigger first and who was shooting at who.
This story came from the maritime intelligence company Ambrey, which state: “an armed security team… onboard the yacht then opened fire on the approaching Yemenis and attempted to escape perceived pirates.” Then, the Coast Guard “returned fire and followed the yacht for approximately an hour until communications with the yacht could be established and the misunderstanding between the parties resolved.”
It’s scary stuff, but it goes directly against what actually happened, according to those on the Kalizma .
The shootout left one of Kalizma’s three private security guards with a bullet wound in the shoulder and the vessel itself has been shredded by bullet holes from those attacking the superyacht. According to AP, Mongia insists the Kalizma’s guards weren’t the first to open fire and the other party “attacked the vessel first and came back in several waves to try to take the Kalizma,” before, “forcing the ship’s three guards to fire upward of 200 rounds to protect the nine crew on board.”
The investigation into exactly what happened is ongoing and will be a fascinating story once investigators are able to sort fact from fiction. Although when you consider how many rounds were fired and the number of people involved, it’s a miracle more weren’t killed.
