The 288-foot 'Fountainhead' is by the Epic Hotel

mark cuban yacht cost

Fountainhead via instagram/jeffjy23 The 288-foot superyacht many thought belonged to Dallas Mavericks owner and Shark Tank star Mark Cuban is currently docked outside the Epic Hotel in Downtown Miami.

Built in 2011, the 'Fountainhead' is no stranger to the Epic, having been spotted there in the past in addition to the large slip a few blocks north at Museum Park. It's the 62nd largest yacht on the planet and in the same slot previously occupied by the $200-million Kismet , which is owned by Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shahid Khan.

The massive vessel is often mistakingly connected to Cuban but it actually  belongs to Sears CEO Eddie Lampert .

“The guy who owns the boat tells everyone that it’s mine,” Cuban told Page Six this week. “It’s so crazy . . . I don’t even own a boat.”

Mark Cuban’s 288-Foot Yacht Fountainhead

Osa estimated that it was 250 feet long. While we were gawking, a guy rolled up and started doing some searches on his smartphone. “It’s 88 meters long,” he said. “That’s about 270 feet (288.713911, to be exact). Mark Cuban owns it. He and Mark Ellison of Oracle fame bought twin yachts from the Dutch luxury yacht company, Feadship, at the same time.” Ain’t the Internet wonderful?

Mark Ellison downsized his yacht

The sister to this ship is a downsized version of Mark Ellison’s previous yacht, the Associated Press reported it was 452 feet long, was five stories tall, had 82 rooms, “a wine cellar the size of most beach bungalows, a dozen yacht-length tenders, and a generator capable of providing enough electricity for a small town in Idaho or Maine… Final cost: $377 million.” He got rid of the larger yacht because he didn’t travel with that many people and it was hard to find mooring for something that big.

How do you afford a yacht like this?

In 1995, Cuban and fellow Indiana University alumnus Todd Wagner started Audionet, combining their mutual interest in college basketball and webcasting. With a single server and an ISDN line, Audionet became Broadcast.com in 1998. By 1999, Broadcast.com had grown to 330 employees and $13.5 million in revenue for the second quarter. In 1999, during the dot com boom, Broadcast.com was acquired by Yahoo! for $5.9 billion in Yahoo! stock.

After the sale, Cuban diversified his wealth to avoid exposure to a market crash. As of 2011, Cuban is No.459 on Forbes’ “World’s Richest People” list, with a net worth of $2.5 billion. The Guinness Book of Records credits Cuban with the “largest single e-commerce transaction,” after paying $40 million for his Gulfstream V jet in October 1999 .

What was that strike thing all about?

I’m sure some of you were wondering what that strike thing was all about yesterday. Thousands of websites, some as large as Wikipedia , others as small as my two blogs, went dark for 24 hours to protest two bills that are making their way through Congress. They are ostensibly to stop Internet piracy, but have the potential of crippling the Internet as we know it today.

I’ve experienced the chilling effect of what’s already on the books. I posted a video of a night lightning with a public domain audio of Beethoven’s Fifth playing in the background.

YouTube sent me a notice that they had removed the audio because of copyright concerns. It took 24 hours to get it back up after I provided evidence that the performance was in the public domain. Guilty until proven innocent.

Under the new laws, my whole site could have been taken down and I could have been subject to fines and jail had I been found to have been using copyrighted material. I have a video on my bike blog where I’m passing a slower rider. You can hear my MP3 player in the background. Conceivably, that could be a violation of the law.

If you don’t think they’ll fool with “the little guy,” consider this: we didn’t invade Russia nor China; we went after Granada.

Whats more impressive is that, between 1999 and 2012, Cuban lost $3.4B and he is still on the World’s Richest list.

I guess I should quit complaining about the hit my 401K took.

Wow, your trips are amazing!!!

Isn’t it Larry, not Mark, Ellison?

Congrats on the photos.

I once did the division on Bill Gates’ fortune and figured he could afford three Nimitz class aircraft carriers, including the planes, if he wanted a private Navy.

If I had the money, I’d just buy the Oasis of the Seas and convert one of the smaller decks into my private quarters. That way, the thing would pay for itself and I could take an unlimited number of friends for out sailing.

I always knew he had private plane but this “boat” is even more impressive!

Gotta love a guy who names his megayacht after Ayn Rand’s “masterpiece.” Gah. I know I can’t say here the word I’m thinking of, but it rhymes with “splooshrag.”

I am closing this post to comments because it has become popular with spammers.

How to buy a superyacht like you're Larry Page or Mark Cuban

Nothing quite says "I've made it" like a luxury yacht decked out with amenities.

The superyacht has become a status symbol among the wealthiest in tech — from Google CEO Larry Page's 193-foot "Senses" all the way up to Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen's 414-foot "Octopus."

But even if you're a billionaire fresh off of an IPO, there are a lot of things to consider before choosing to add a yacht to your toy collection.

" Buying a yacht — it’s not a logical business decision. You can’t rationalize it," Rupert Connor, owner of crew agency Luxury Yacht Group, said to Business Insider. " You can’t use a spreadsheet to say, 'This is the breakeven point for happiness.'"

How much are you willing to pay?

You can usually find listings for boats currently available for purchase or charter on yachting  industry sites like  Yachtworld.com  and  Yatco.com . Individual firms, like Fraser Yachts , often maintain their own internal listings.

The most inexpensive yacht currently listed for sale on Fraser Yachts' web site is a 60-foot boat called "Reel Action." It's listed for $239,000.

On the higher end of the scale, there's "Imagine," a 213-foot yacht that's on the market for $82 million.

But that list price doesn't even begin to tell the whole story of how much money you should be willing to spend if you decide to buy a yacht.

Annual operating costs — fuel, crew salaries, maintenance, and paint, for example — can be very steep.

Though many in the yachting world have said that you should expect to pay 10% of the purchase price on operations each year, Connor says that fees can actually be much higher than that.

Connor stressed the importance of surveying a yacht before buying it, as you may uncover structural flaws whose fixes will definitely stretch your budget.

" As boats get older, the capital value goes up, and the operating and maintenance costs also go up," Connor said. " The 10% figure is wrong, and it gets repeated all the time."

For a 200-foot-yacht, like Page's "Senses," fuel alone could cost about $800,000 annually. Maintenance might cost as much as $750,000 a year.

Page reportedly paid $45 million for the yacht in 2011 — it has a jacuzzi, helicopter pad, and interiors designed by Philippe Starck.

How often can you reasonably use it?

Some would-be yacht owners might think they could offset the costs of a yacht by making it available for charter when they're not using it.

However, Connor says that it does not make much financial sense to buy a yacht just to charter it, as the operating costs will far outweigh any profit you might make.

" Most people who buy yachts don’t have to rationalize the purchase, though. They can afford it," Connor said.

Michael Busacca, U.S. Commercial Director and COO at Fraser Yachts, says it is possible to make money out of chartering your yacht if you give up the freedom of using it whenever you want.

Still, it's probably best not to depend on charter to make up the difference.

"T he owner needs to be very flexible on their own personal usage while in charter, especially during peak charter periods such as Christmas and New Years," Busacca said to Business Insider.

How many crew members are you looking to hire?

The number of crew members you'll hire will vary depending on the size of the yacht. While an 80-foot yacht might require only two crew members to operate, you might need to hire up to 60 people if you have a larger boat.

According to Fraser Yachts, some of the most commonly hired crew members include a captain, chief mate, chief engineer, chief steward, chef, and deckhands.

Luxury Yacht Group suggests setting a salary of $7,000 to $15,000 a month for an experienced captain. Mates should make between $3,000 and $7,000 a month, while a deckhand makes between $2,000 and $4,000. Crew members should be paid more on larger yachts, according to Luxury Yacht Group's guidelines .

Allen reportedly keeps a permanent crew of 60 onboard "Octopus." The yacht has 28 cabins just for the crew, according to  the Superyacht Times .

What amenities do you want?

Yachts can come with all kinds of special features.

" Of course, new build yachts can be fully customized to the client's liking," Busacca said. "Many requests include, but are not limited to, on-deck hot tubs, gym, wave runners, tenders, separate crew quarters, on deck master stateroom, satellite communication and entertainment systems."

Google chairman Eric Schmidt  reportedly paid $72.3 million for the 194-foot yacht "Oasis" in 2009. The superyacht has plenty of amenities, including a pool, jet skis, and a gym that can be converted into a disco.

Allen's "Octopus" yacht is fully equipped with a  pool, two helicopters, a movie theater, basketball court, and a recording studio.

Former Oracle CEO Larry Ellison named his 288-foot yacht "Musashi"  after a revered 16th-century Japanese warrior. The boat's amenities include two master suites and a basketball hoop.

Mark Cuban's 288-foot "Fountainhead" yacht is the sister ship to Ellison's "Musashi." The two ships look nearly the same from the outside, though Cuban reportedly went for a more antique-inspired interior.

Where will you register the yacht?

Where you decide to register your yacht is very important , as it determines how much you will pay in taxes, how liable you will be for operating in international waters, and how you can operate the yacht as a commercial enterprise.

Places like the Cayman Islands and Marshall Islands are popular among yacht owners because they operate under tax laws similar to Delaware's, where many businesses often choose to incorporate.

Page , Schmidt , Allen , Ellison , and Cuban all registered their superyachts in the Cayman Islands, according to MarineTraffic .

"There are tax benefits to registering in the Cayman Islands," Connor said. "The flag behind the yacht shows which rules you're following."

Clive McCartney, U.S. Manager of Yacht Services at Fraser Yachts, explains what you should take into consideration.

"There are many things to consider including tax implications, operational requirements and the service required from your flag state," McCartney said. "Do they have their own surveyors or do they contract it to third parties, what safety code do they apply, how do they treat exemption requests, and what is their safety record? Registration of the yacht should be discussed with your Maritime Attorney and your Yacht Manager before making a decision."

Malta and the Isle of Man are also common registration points among European yacht owners.

Early Life and Education

Cuban was born on 31 st July 1958 into a working class Jewish family in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. His father Norton Cuban worked as a car upholster. Mark grew up in Mouth Lebanon, which was a posh suburb. Cuban’s family name was Chabenisky. His grandfather changed it to Cuban after he landed on Ellis Island along with his family from Russia.

Mark attended the Mount Lebanon High School. While in school he did varied jobs such as disco dancing instructor, bartender, and a party promoter. He sold garbage bags when he was 12 years old so as to be able to pay for pricey basketball shoes.

Mark did not attend senior year at high school and instead went to the University of Pittsburgh as a full-time student. He transferred to Bloomington’s Indiana University after a year at Pittsburg University. In 1981, he graduated with a B.S. degree in Business Administration from the Kelley School of Business. Cuban continued working varied odd jobs when he was in college. Mark moved to Dallas in 1982.

Business Career and Success Story

After working as a bartender in Dallas for some time, Cuban found work as a salesperson for PC software retailer ‘Your Business Software.’ He was fired from the job within a year. He then launched MicroSolutions, his own company, a software reseller and system integrator. Perot Systems was the biggest client of this company.

Mark sold his company in 1990 to CompuServe for $6 million, with his share being $2 million. Cuban founded Audionet, a web radio company, in 1995 with Todd Wagner. The company was renamed as Broadcast.com in 1998 and acquired by Yahoo in 1999 for $5.7 billion. This was the start of his success story.

After selling Broadcast.com, Cuban invested in a diverse portfolio so as to limit his exposure and risk to market crashes. Some of his new companies, investments, and purchases include Landmark Theatres in 2003, 2929 Entertainment, HDNet/AXS TV, Synergy Sports Technology, RedSwoosh, IceRocket, Weblogs, Inc., Goowy Media Inc., Brondell Inc., Motionloft, and Magnolia Pictures.

Dallas Mavericks: Cuban became a majority shareholder of Dallas Mavericks in Jan 2000. He paid H. Ross Perot, Jr. $285 dollars for the majority stake in the NBA team. Dallas Mavericks did not win a lot of games before 2000. For the 20 years before 2000, their win percentage was only 40%. In the 10 years following 2000, the team’s winning percentage increased to 69 % and the team reached the playoffs nine times, and one NBA finals in the year 2006. Dallas Mavericks finally won the NBA finals in 2011 by defeating the Miami Heat.

Cuban has bid unsuccessfully to acquire Pittsburgh Penguins of the NHL and Major League Baseball’s Chicago Cubs, the Texas Rangers, and the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Mark Cuban can't buy his favorite sports team despite $5.7 billion fortune

Former dallas mavericks owner mark cuban expressed on x how he's tried to buy his hometown baseball team, pittsburgh pirates, to no avail..

Mark Cuban

Popular American billionaire Mark Cuban has apparently been trying to buy his hometown Pittsburgh Pirates for several years.

The former Dallas Mavericks owner, worth an eye watering $5.7 billion , grew up in the Pittsburgh suburb of Mount Lebanon and has previously indicated he supports the team.

"Dear @mcuban, I am once again asking you to buy the Pittsburgh Pirates," tweeted Pirates fan and author Virginia Montanez. "I look forward to hearing from you soon re: this pressing matter."

  • Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban 'proud' of enormous nine-figure tax bill
  • Elon Musk and Mark Cuban in full agreement over Super Bowl LVIII betting

This drew the attention of John Linder, a popular Miami sports radio show host who knows Cuban. "I talked with Mark Cuban about buying the team back in 2006," Linder tweeted.

"He loves the Pirates but says the owners will NEVER sell due to their business model. They aren’t required to spend money so they never do & they make big profits every year through TV & everything else. Lost cause."

Chicago Cubs v Pittsburgh Pirates

Cuban humorously quote-tweeted Linder: "If someone offered you a job, that paid 25m or more per year, to stand in Market Square and let the entire city of Pittsburgh yell at you, would you take that job? That job is owning the Pirates. Why would they sell?"

Cuban is referring to current Pirates owner Bob Nutting, who reportedly continues to make a profit on his underperforming team despite being highly unpopular in the city of Pittsburgh.

Nutting bought the team in 2007 and consistently kept the Pirates' payroll amongst the worst in the league. Even during Pittsburgh's playoff years from 2013-2015, the team never ranked higher than 23rd in payroll.

The Pirates currently sit at 62-71 and last in the National League Central division. The team is carried by their young, cost-controlled talent like Paul Skenes , Oneil Cruz, and Jared Jones and ranks 29th in payroll.

Cuban doesn't currently own a team, having sold the Mavericks last year for $3.5 billion to Miriam Adelson, who has a net worth of over $32 billion.

Cuban remains a minority shareholder of the team and remains in charge of basketball operations. The Mavericks lost in the 2024 NBA Finals to the Boston Celtics . Could he emerge as the Pirates owner in the future? Only time will tell.

Mark cuban says he drove cars that cost $200 with holes in the floorboard and lived off mac and cheese because he wanted to retire early.

Before he was a billionaire and a standout on ABC’s “Shark Tank,” Mark Cuban's way of getting around was anything but glamorous. Known as the former owner of the Dallas Mavericks, you might not peg him for a frugal guy – like how Warren Buffett is famously cautious with his spending. But it turns out, Cuban was pretty good at pinching pennies too.

Don't Miss:

Are you rich? Here’s what Americans think you need to be considered wealthy.

Can you guess how many Americans successfully retire with $1,000,000 saved? The percentage may shock you .

Don’t miss out on the next Nvidia – you can invest in the future of AI for only $10.

In an interview with Money.com , Cuban opened up about his surprisingly frugal habits back in the day and shared some insights on building wealth from scratch. “I didn’t have a car that cost more than $200 until I was 25, I think,” he said. “It was crazy. But that was my decision. I was determined to save money.”

His choice of cars – a Fiat X1/9 with a hole in the floorboard and a 1966 Buick LeSabre – were far from glamorous. During the interview, fellow entrepreneur Sara Blakely joked that these rides were hardly “chick magnets.”

Trending: Founder of Personal Capital and ex-CEO of PayPal re-engineers traditional banking with this new high-yield account — start saving better today.

But here's the twist: Cuban’s decision to drive these beat-up cars was more than just about saving a few bucks. It was part of a bigger plan, inspired by the book “Cashing in on the American dream: How to Retire at 35” by Paul Terhorst. The book pitches a radical idea: save up $1 million, keep your expenses low like a student, and you could retire early.

“I believed heavily in that book. It was a big motivator for me,” Cuban explained. “I did things like having five roommates and living off macaroni and cheese, and I was very, very frugal.”

This isn't just another one of those “millionaire tells you to cut back on the lattes” stories. Cuban’s goal was never just about stacking cash. He was chasing the freedom to live on his terms. “I wanted enough money to travel, have fun, and party like a rock star but still live like a student. That was my motivation,” he shared.

Cuban explains, "I was determined to be able to retire." Even at a young age, retirement was the goal.

He also shared his thoughts on managing finances, emphasizing the importance of living within one's means and avoiding debt. "I learned very quickly that debt was not my friend," Cuban noted.

Trending: Will the surge continue or decline on real estate prices? People are finding out about risk-free real estate investing that lets you cash out whenever you want.

He also stressed the benefits of saving money and investing wisely. "Putting some into a low-cost mutual fund – like an SPX fund – and living as inexpensively as you possibly can will pay off dividends," Cuban advised.

Cuban believes that individuals can begin to build their net worth by investing in the market . "You can start to make good things happen," he said, adding that while it's not always easy, especially for those with families, the key lies in finding the discipline to save. "If you can find that discipline, then you can save," he concluded.

Mark Cuban's story shows that financial discipline and planning are key. While you don't have to live off macaroni and cheese or drive a clunker, building a solid financial future might require sacrifices. If you're serious about achieving financial freedom, a financial advisor can help you create a plan that fits your goals.

Mark Cuban doesn’t spend his billions on yachts, butlers, or chauffeurs because more staff means ‘no privacy’ By: Posted: August 6, 2023

  • Mark Cuban got candid about how he spends his fortune with podcast host Bobbi Althoff on Thursday.
  • The billionaire says he still prefers to do his own chores and drive himself places.
  • Unlike fellow elites, Cuban doesn’t own a luxury yacht, but he still makes pricey purchases.

Billionaire businessman Mark Cuban doesn’t want to let his financial status change him, and he’s gone out of his way to maintain a normal life.

The 65-year-old owner of the Dallas Mavericks is worth an estimated $5.1 billion, according to Forbes. However, on an episode of “The Really Good Podcast,” Cuban said he avoids certain habits that are associated with the exorbitantly rich.

“I just try to be the same person, I mean, as I was when I was poor, middle, and rich,” Cuban told podcast host Bobbi Althoff.

In his quest for normality, he said, he doesn’t hire staff to clean his home, cook his meals, or drive for him. He described purchasing a yacht as “just not what I would do.” The investor added that more staff often means less privacy for elites who employ large teams.

“I like the privacy,” Cuban said. “I’ve been around people who hire somebody to do everything for them, and that’s just, like, no privacy.”

Cuban’s preferences differ from his fellow billionaires who spend hundreds of millions on luxury yachts . In 2016, he corrected assumptions that he owned a 288-foot yacht in an interview with Page Six.

“The guy who owns the boat tells everyone that it’s mine,” Cuban said. “It’s so crazy … I don’t even own a boat.”

Although Cuban is against spending his fortune on yachts, he still makes purchases that only the ultrawealthy can. In 2021, for example, he purchased an entire 77-acre Texas town about 55 miles south of Dallas.

After spending an undisclosed amount on the land, Cuban told local reporters he wasn’t sure what he’d end up using it for — if he used it all.

Mark Cuban Says He Drove Cars That Cost $200 With Holes In The Floorboard And Lived Off Mac And Cheese Because He Wanted To Retire Early

B efore he was a billionaire and a standout on ABC’s “Shark Tank,” Mark Cuban's way of getting around was anything but glamorous. Known as the former owner of the Dallas Mavericks, you might not peg him for a frugal guy – like how Warren Buffett is famously cautious with his spending. But it turns out, Cuban was pretty good at pinching pennies too.
