The two level pool and spa adjoin with a large covered deck and bar, including an outdoor TV for entertainment. This house also features two master bedrooms. The home even has an elevator and an oversized garage. Along the canal, there is ample dockage with a 10,000 lb boat lift and 4,500 lb jet ski/kayak lift. There is also an infrared sauna to relax in. The hidden laundry room features 2 sets of Washers and Dryers. Special vacation

We have been renting near St. Armand’s Circle for the past 6 years and this was by far our best experience. From my first phone call to Rick B. until our last day, everything was first class. The customer service and professionalism displayed by Rick was the best we’ve experienced. He personally met us at the property to explain the ins and outs of the house with a goodie basket in hand. He was also prompted and courteous when we called to ask questions. He went above and beyond with all our interactions. The home was special- couldn’t have asked for more. It fit our family perfectly. The combination of great customer service and a beautiful home made this a truly special vacation.

Gorgeous home

This was our second time staying at this beautiful villa. With a lovely pool, a short stroll to shops and restaurants plus just a few yards from the beach it really is the perfect location. The home has a well equipped kitchen and all the bedrooms have super comfy beds. Thank you Rick for dealing with a couple of minor issues so quickly. We look forward to returning again soon

For a Gorgeous Walk That Combines History and Nature, Meander Through Lido Key

For a gorgeous walk that combines history and nature, meander through a historic neighborhood on St. Armands Key and then walk the entire length of Lido Beach. This walk is never too crowded and takes you through some of the most beautiful streets—and beaches—in Sarasota.

A good launching point is at the corner of South Washington Drive and John Ringling Boulevard. South Washington is one of the original streets in John Ringling Estates, a development created by John Ringling in 1924. Ringling, who purchased St. Armands Key in 1917, had a grand dream to turn the key into an upscale destination of world-class shops and luxury homes with “resort features,” as one of his old ads proclaims.

Though he didn’t live to see it, St. Armands fulfilled much of his vision. Lined with flowering trees and beautiful homes, South Washington Drive offers plenty of eye candy. At least five of the original mansions built almost 100 years ago (the lots went for a pricey $3,000 back then) still stand in all their splendor.

Continue heading south across a humped-back bridge over a canal where you’ll often spy kayakers gliding underneath on their way to Sarasota Bay. You’ll suddenly find yourself at a quiet, shady linear park along South Boulevard of the Presidents that takes you to Ben Franklin Drive and South Lido Park. Once you hit the beach, take in the view of Big Pass and Siesta Key. The more ambitious walker can do a loop through the woods at South Lido—there are spectacular views of downtown Sarasota at the end—and come back out to walk north.

As you head back along the sidewalk on Ben Franklin, you can’t help but enjoy the beachy, vacation vibe. You’ll pass sandy tourists in bathing suits, residents walking their dogs, and toned and tan walkers and runners—and you’ll be one of them.

About 1.5 miles after leaving South Lido, you’ll hit North Lido Beach, which thankfully was preserved from development by wise city commissioners in the 1970s. No condos or hotels here; just blissful beach. Make sure to walk the eight-tenths of a mile along the shoreline or on the trails through the uplands to the very end for a view of New Pass and Longboat Key. When you emerge from this natural paradise, cross the finish line at St. Armands Circle, and perhaps relax with a healthy “Green Power” smoothie or, if you really want to celebrate every one of those 10,000 steps, an ice-cold beer.

Worth Seeing

South Lido Rest Area: One of the coolest modern public restrooms ever, designed by Sweet Sparkman Architects, is here, and you might need a bathroom break.

New Pass: No amenities here. Except for Saturdays and Sundays, this stretch of beach overlooking the pass between Lido and Longboat Key is blissfully quiet.

The “Yacht” House: Currently under construction adjacent to the North Lido Beach parking lot, this jaw-dropping, 10,000-square-foot behemoth required 149 pilings 35 feet deep, 100 tons of steel and 1,500 yards of concrete.

A gift from John: Circus impresario John Ringling’s imprint remains in the middle of St. Armands Circle. Check out two sculptures he donated in the late 1920s: Discus Thrower is a youthful, ancient athlete throwing a discus, and Mercury is a young gladiator mid-stride. Both bronze casts were acquired from the famed Chiurazzi Factory in Naples, Italy.

The 40th annual Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix is September 14 – September 15, 2024, at Lido Beach in the City of Sarasota.

Race festivities will attract thousands of people to the City of Sarasota. The Sarasota Police Department is committed to keeping residents and visitors safe. The Sarasota Police Department wants you and your family to enjoy the weekend safely, and remember, if you SEE something, SAY something. Report any suspicious activity or behavior to law enforcement immediately.

Road Closures / Parking Vehicles not removed by the posted time will be towed at the owner’s expense. For information on towed vehicles, please call Upman’s Towing at 941-365-7084.

• Closed from 12:01 a.m. Friday, September 13, 2024, until 10:00 p.m. Sunday, September 15, 2024.
• The front two rows of the parking lot at Lido Beach are reserved for the event from 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, September 14, 2024, until 10 p.m. on Sunday, September 15, 2024.
• South parking lot of Lido Beach is reserved for emergency and event personnel from 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, September 14, 2024, until 10 p.m. on Sunday, September 15, 2024.
• The Pit Party will take place in the dry pit area in the Van Wezel parking lot.

NOTE:  Due to limited parking spaces, carpooling is highly encouraged. Illegally parked vehicles are subject to ticketing. Vehicles blocking private driveways are subject to towing. Anticipate long delays from the beach area after the races. When leaving the beach viewing area, expect an exit time of more than one hour.

Centennial Park / Boat Ramp Closures Centennial Park Boat Ramp Closure – Closed from 12:01 a.m. Friday, September 13, 2024, until 10:00 p.m. Sunday, September 15, 2024.

This area will be the staging area for the Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix.  There will be no boat ramp access during this time.  A suggested alternative boat ramp includes Ken Thompson Park on City Island and various boat ramps in Manatee County and southern Sarasota County.

New Pass Closure On the water, New Pass will be closed Saturday, September 14, 2024, and Sunday, September 15, 2024, during the Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix. The pass will be closed west of the New Pass bridge. Boaters will still be able to access the cove.

Lido Beach Hours The  Sarasota County Sea Turtle Protection Ordinance  requires that all beach furniture and equipment be removed from the beach nightly, until sunrise the following morning. According to amended  Sarasota City Code Sec. 22-4,  Lido Key public beaches will be closed to beachgoers from 11 p.m. until sunrise. This means Lido Key beach will be closed to all beachgoers, race spectators, and beach equipment until sunrise, which is approximately 6:30 a.m., during events. The Sarasota Police Department will enforce closure times to protect the safety of all beachgoers, including the marine turtle kind.  To protect the environment, spectators are asked to stay off dunes along Lido Beach.  Please note:  Dogs are not allowed on Lido Beach.

Beach Equipment & Marine Turtle Protection In addition to expanded marine, foot and vehicle patrols, the Sarasota Police Department will be protecting public safety during events by posting signs prohibiting beachgoers from storing and leaving unattended personal property on Lido Beach, according to  Sarasota City Code Sec. 21-44 .  This is for protecting all beachgoers and their belongings to help ensure a safe and orderly race and beach-going experience.  Beach furniture and other beach equipment, toys, or trash, left on the beach overnight during marine turtle nesting season can pose a serious entanglement hazard and obstacle for marine turtles and their hatchlings.

The  Sarasota County Sea Turtle Protection Ordinance  requires any “temporary structures, including but not limited to beach chairs, umbrellas, and cabanas, which have the potential for entrapment of marine turtles and which may interfere with the use of the natural beach environment for nesting habitat, be removed from the beach nightly, from sunset to sunrise.”  Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium, the Sarasota Police Department, Sarasota County Parks Department, and P1 Offshore organizers are partnering to protect endangered marine turtles and ask for the public’s help in making this a safe event for all.

Wildlife Protection The Sarasota Police Department is conducting enhanced enforcement measures to ensure the conservation and protection of several threatened species of native wildlife of Lido Key, efforts complemented by the work of Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium.   Marine Turtles, Black Skimmers, Least Terns, and Snowy Plovers all share Lido Beach and are protected under state and federal law.   Beachgoers should be aware of posted signage and fencing and stay away from marine turtle nests and seabird nesting zones.  It is important not to enter any posted areas and to avoid any behaviors that may disturb the wildlife.

Disturbances can cause birds to leave their eggs and chicks unattended, making them vulnerable to predators and overheating. Sarasota Police officers will collaborate with Audubon and Mote Marine volunteers to patrol nesting locations to protect the beautiful Florida wildlife on Lido Key. Anyone who observes any stranded, sick, or injured marine turtles or mammals can contact Mote’s Stranding Investigations Program, a 24-hour response program in Sarasota and Manatee counties, at 1-888-345-2335.

Omsk: Western Siberia's hidden gem

Omsk was founded in 1716 when a wooden fort was constructed to house a Cossack unit in the area to protect the expanding Russian frontier from Central Asian nomadic incursions. It served various administrative functions throughout the 1800s and became infamous as a place of exile and incarceration. The city was rundown when selected as a hub for the Trans-Siberian railway in the 1890s. Many international trade companies and foreign consulates relocated here and the remnants of their offices can still be found in the city today.

The mystery of Kolchak’s gold

Omsk became the headquarters of the anti-Bolshevik white army led by Admiral Aleksandr Kolchak in 1918. In late 1918 there was a revolt in the city initiated by a leftist faction (Socialist Revolutionary Party or SPs) with 500 rebel deaths at the hands of Cossacks and Czechoslovak soldiers, a major factor in convincing the SPs to join the Bolsheviks. There is a large Soviet-era monument to the uprising at the corner of Lenina street and Broz Tito street.  

Kolchak was entrusted with a large portion of the Tsarist’s gold reserves, yet amazingly lost much of it. Supposedly 250 million rubles were lost (about $8 million at the time). Legend has it that they were buried near the village of Taiga, yet numerous excavations have turned up nothing. The area still attracts the occasional fortune seeker.

Kolchak’s headquarters are located at what is today the  Omsk Regional Archives  at Broz Tito St., 3. Nothing shows how much times have changed as the imposing Kolchak statue that was unveiled in 2012 around the corner. Dostoevsky and the Tsar

At 1.15 million people Omsk dwarfs the region’s second largest city, Tara (population 28,000). The city is split by the River Irtysh into two sections (all places of interest are on the right bank) with downtown emanating from the River Om.

Most foreigners have heard of Omsk via writer Fyodor Dostoevsky who spent four years here as a prisoner (1849-1853). He spent most of his time in Omsk in squalor and chains and with no books besides the Bible, however, it left an indelible mark on his memory and influenced his future literary output. There is a statue of the writer in chains grasping a Bible at the corner of Partizanskaya and Spartakovskaya streets, where Dostoevsky undoubtedly stepped many times. A  museum dedicated to the author's time in Omsk  is located nearby at Dostoevskogo St. 1. The local university is also named for him.

Tarskaya Street is one of the city’s oldest thoroughfares. It features a monument to victims of Stalinist repressions and the Tara gates, originally built in 1792 as one of the four entrances to the Omsk fort. Nearby stands the Assumption Cathedral, one of the largest churches in Siberia. Future Tsar Nicholas II laid the first stone here in 1891 when making his way back to St. Petersburg after his Eastern journey.

In Omsk you are never more than a few steps from the village, made clear when one exits the center to the north, where most houses are wooden and roads unpaved. Stroll along Bulatova and Rabinovicha streets, a well-preserved ensemble of wooden architecture.

Omsk’s cultural heritage 

The Pushkin State Library is worth a look with busts of Russian literary figures adorning the front side of the building. At the corner under the big “M” is one of several stations of the never completed Omsk metro. Construction began in 1992, but as of 2014 the project is again dormant due to financing problems.

One of Omsk’s most famous sons is Symbolist painter Mikhail Vrubel (1856-1910). Vrubel ignored contemporary trends and focused on themes from fairy tales, demons and religious subjects and also designed a majolica frieze for the Metropol Hotel in Moscow. Omsk’s Fine Arts Museum is named for him and features a number of  his works .

Over the years a number of tourists have tripped over the monument to Stepanych. This bust of a plumber rising from a sewer was the idea of Omsk’s former mayor after a trip to Slovakia in the 1990s. Stepanych has become one of the symbols of the city.

Omsk is a hockey town, with one of the major teams,  Avangard , in the KHL, Russia’s premiere professional league. Russian champions on several occasions, check out a match at Omsk Arena. But if you can’t catch a game there’s a large kiosk featuring the team’s merchandise at the airport.

Siberian   punk, jazz and the classics

While Omsk may not be on everyone’s radar musically, it does host a  musical theater  built just after the war. The building on 10 Let Oktyabrya Street is in the form of an enormous sloping grand piano.

Perhaps Russia’s most famous punk band,  Grazhdanskaya oborona  (Civil Defence), was formed here in 1982. The band was active until 2008 when lead singer Yegor Letov died of heart failure at age 43. Letov is buried at the Staro-Vostochnoe cemetery. A sprawling graveyard with thousands of graves, fans should stop at the administration for help in locating his grave.

In Russia, Omsk is known among the younger, tech-savvy generation primarily because of the “Omsk bird,” also known as Winged Doom. The origin of what became one of Russia’s most ubiquitous memes comes from a painting by German artist Heiko  Müller. One day in 2009 an Internet user posted this painting with the line, “Welcome to Omsk,” at the top. Additional versions menace viewers stating, “Don't try to leave Omsk,” and “Omsk is closer than you think.” Like many popular memes on the Internet, this one went viral and has become something like an unofficial symbol of the city.
