The jeanneau sun odyssey 349 packs a big-boat punch with innovative features, a spacious interior and easy-to-sail speed.

We test sailed the 349 on Biscayne Bay, sailing in the shadow of Miami’s glittering skyline. The conditions were ideal, with 10- to 15-knot winds from the east, gentle turquoise seas and a perfect 75-degree February day. Yes, I said February. Jeanneau’s product specialist Jeff Jorgensen, a font of knowledge when it comes to all things Jeanneau, and my wife Tadji joined me for the outing. Our test boat was fitted with the standard mainsail, stowed in a lazy bag. A square-topped high-performance main and in-mast furling main are both options, an example of the wide cross section of the sailors the 349 is designed to appeal to. We came into the wind, quickly hoisted the main and unfurled the 106% genoa. Tadji took the helm as we sped south on a close reach at 6.5 knots.

jeanneau 349 sailboat data

Following the trend of recent Sun Odyssey models, including the 409 and 469, the 349 has a shallow forefoot, a long waterline and wide beam that’s carried all the way aft. By the numbers, the length-overall-to-waterline-length ratio is 97% and the beam-to-length ratio is 2.9. A subtle chine runs aft and is both aesthetically pleasing and practical. It appears to lower the overall freeboard and more importantly, increases form stability and adds volume aft, making the aft cabins more spacious.

Below the waterline, the 349 has two keel options. The standard draft is a 6-foot 5-inch deep fin with and L-shaped sculpted bulb. The shoal-draft model reduces the draft to 4 feet 10 inches. Jeff Jorgensen mentioned that a keel centerboard/swing keel was a possible future option. The displacement is 11,772 pounds, translating into a displacement-to-length ratio of 151 and putting the 349 on the sporty side of moderate. Twin rudders make sense when the beam is carried aft and help keep the boat under control, especially when surfing and conversely when heeled.

Two rigs are offered, the performance rig that includes the square-top main and 33 square feet of additional sail area, and the standard rig with 613 square feet. Both are fractionally rigged with deeply angled double swept spreaders that don’t require a backstay. The spreaders are swept aft at 30 degrees, and while this eliminates the need for a backstay it also limits the range of the mainsail when deep reaching. Of course you can mitigate this problem with a performance reaching sail. There are advantages to keeping the stern clear of standing rigging, and when you combine the lack of a backstay with twin wheels, it really opens up the 349 cockpit, making it feel like a much larger boat. The cockpit, like the hull shape, widens as you move aft, and with the drop-down transom step and swim platform deployed it’s remarkably spacious. Our test boat was fitted with a handsome teak cockpit table with storage in the middle and robust stainless handrails on top. With the two aft cabins and opening transom, lazarette space is limited. There is however a dedicated life raft locker near the stern, the perfect spot should you have to launch it in an emergency.

The sight lines from both helms are uncluttered and it’s quite nice to have the choice of high- and low-side sailing by shuffling from one helm to the other. Sail controls are led aft to both helms through Spinlock clutches. A Harken self-tailing winch mounted just forward of each wheel does the heavy lifting. A Y-bridle mainsheet arrangement takes the place of the traditional traveler, and the genoa headsail leads employ friction rings instead of genoa tracks and cars. Derived from the Sun Fast series, and of course other race boats, I like this “soft” approach to sail control. It allows for great flexibility and balance when it comes to trimming options and is definitely the look of the future as new supercharged Spectra ropes and lightweight alloys continue to take over applications usually reserved for metals. A solid vang is still part of the mainsail control system.

The side decks are wide, easy to navigate, comfortable to lounge on and the molded nonskid is superb, a Jeanneau specialty. Deck hardware is first rate, from cleats to stanchions. An external anchor locker is deep enough to house the second anchor and also the optional windlass. A bowsprit is optional, and ideal for setting a code zero or asymmetrical sail for reaching. This option pushes the anchor roller into an offset position.

Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 349 – Yachting Monthly review

  • June 25, 2014

Is this the ideal entry-level small family cruiser? Chris Beeson thinks the Sun Odyssey 349 is very, very close

Product Overview

Manufacturer:, price as reviewed:.

What’s she like to sail? Our test sail for Jeanneau’s new Sun Odyssey 349 took place in pretty punchy conditions, gusty with up to 30 knots over the deck upwind. Despite the fact that we had taken in both of the main’s two reefs we were still overpowered but, with the main feathered off and the jib’s leech open, she bounded upwind with great enthusiasm. She would lean on her chines in a gust and just accelerate. Tremendous fun. It’s the control from the twin rudders that make the difference, making it seem like the wind is a couple of forces lower. According to the stats, she’s similar in performance and speed potential to the Dehler 34, also quite sporty, so there’s no reason to think that she won’t go well in lighter conditions too, sailing the angles with a furling cruising chute set off the bowsprit. Helm positions enable the skipper to take her through tacks and gybes without disturbing the crew, key for family cruising. Under sail, she’s point-and-shoot easy to helm and behaves impeccably well. Under motor with twin rudders, she is probably less so but I didn’t notice any problems berthing stern-to in these conditions. What’s she like in port and at anchor? With big hullports, white hull cladding and double forecabin doors, the saloon is bright and airy, and the positive sheerline creates much more than just the illusion of space. With any family cruiser, the critical spaces are the saloon, galley, heads and cockpit – that’s where most time is spent – and the 349 gets those areas absolutely spot on. The cabins suffer in the compromise but they’re more than adequate for sleeping and dressing. The berths are a decent size, particularly in the aft cabin. Ventilation is good and stowage adequate for a week away. The galley has a single rather than a double sink. The second sink will be missed I’d say, but there’s no doubting the benefit of a bit more surface to work on. Stowage is pretty good, with bottle lockers in the table and in the galley bulkhead, and the LED strip under the lockers above the stove gets the light in just the right place. The heads is excellent. Designers of smaller production boats are responding to the fact that families don’t want dank, cramped heads where only a contortionist can shower, and this is a prime example. Would she suit you and your crew? The big, bright saloon and heads, the safe forward cockpit and the walk-through bathing platform will appeal to young families looking to get afloat and have fun. The simplicity of the deck layout means you don’t need to be a terrifically able sailor to get her going or, if you are a decent sailor, you don’t need to spend ages setting her up to get some very respectable numbers so you can still join in with family fun. In place of jib cars, she has flying eye jib sheet leads, which are interesting, and mainsheet tension stops them clattering on deck. They seem a decent solution except for the fact that leech control is compromised when the jib is reefed. It’s unlikely whether that would bother potential buyers as they will plan to avoid conditions that involve reefing the jib. Nor would they miss the lack of feel at the wheels, perhaps the sole drawback of twin rudders. Close quarters manoeuvring might take a little getting used to but again, unless conditions are friendly, she’s not likely to be venturing out.

All in all, the 349 is a gleaming little family cruiser, eager and able to please. Demand a test sail.

I have fallen in love with the Jeanneau 349. The size, layout and modern hull looks perfect to me. Probably will be doing a test sail in October when we get down to Florida. https://www.jeanneauamerica.com/en/boats/2-sun-odyssey/59-sun-odyssey-349 Curious why no Jeanneau section and doesn't seem like a lot of post on Jeanneau. Checked for used listing and not very many either. Any feedback on Jeanneau and looking at new factory ordered boats? Love the build and price in the website too. Optioned up the base to just over $160k

Jackdaw

I love everything about that boat, except for its mainsheet system. But still, a great boat. I’ve been on a couple, one fat head and the other conventional. Go fat. Beneteau owns Jeanneau. Their sun series boats fit right in between cruisy Oceanis and racy First.

Bill19233

There has to be at least a dozen newer Jeanneau's of all sizes sailing on Galveston Bay. Must be a dealer somewhere close. I love their looks, and the 64 is on my short list when I win the lottery. There's a pretty new 349 on the dock next to us that I admire. A 379 races against us sometimes and somehow rates slower and starts ahead of us, and we usually manage to pass him and we're not very fast at all, not sure if that's the boat or the driver.

BigEasy

John, Very nice boat. Only thing that I don't care for on newer midsize Beneteaus & Jeanneaus under 40 feet is the dual steering pedestals. I can certainly see the advantage in larger boats; however, I don't see any advantage on a 35 foot boat. In my opinion it adds to the cost of the boat and takes up too much space in the cockpit. Beneteau & Jeanneau have definitely gone in that direction. Don't know if it is an option or if they are all manufactured in this manner. Hope it all works out for you.

Will see what the wife thinks. I thought the jib adjustments was unique too. Will be fun to check out.

I always liked the lines of the 349 and this boat will be on my list should I move to a larger sailing area in the future.

@Jackdaw what are your thoughts on the sweeped back spreader with down wind. Is a spin needed?

Awesome, thanks for the insight. Looking forward to October now!

thebarold

I am on our second season with this boat. Can echo Jackdaw's statements regarding the the downwind performance with the standard sailplan. Other owners have found a whisker pole to help with the 110 standard genoa. The one thing about the dual helm (extra expense and maintenance aside) is that it does open up the stern of the sailboat (see my avatar). I bought the asym rigging package but held off from buying the Jeanneau Code Zero sail (really a 155% sail). Will be making my first flying sail purchase this off-season. Storage is at a premium (we went with a 3 cabin model) and the furling main (while nice for controlling everything from the cockpit) does limit performance even further. (hence the forthcoming flying sail purchase) Any questions about this boat, please feel free to ask me.

Nice thanks for the feedback. I thought 3 cabin also but losing the shower was not an option for happy wife. So looks like take the sails upgrade and code 0 setup. I was thinking bow thruster but think I'd be ok without.

Thanks @Jackdaw , I thought the bow thuster would be cool but better spent on sail upgrades.

Totally agree - a bow thruster is superfluous on this boat - though it took us a bit to get used to. Devil's advocate, though, I would point out, in addition to Jackdaw's excellent point about the twin rudders/no wash, these new boats have huge freeboard and therefore more windage than classical designs. Our first encounter with a high wind docking had us blown down our fairway finally parallel parking us between two boats, Austin Powers style. Luckily we didn't hit anyone and met a lot of members at our club that day! The other point I would make is that the only motor available with this model presently is a 21HP Yanmar. Which has proven fine for our use, however if you have significant current and spec the factory folding prop, be prepared to be patient waiting to make way in reverse and for the prop walk to stop. A feathering prop is also on my shopping list (sigh). I've heard Maxprop is great, however they do not have a dealer in Canada anymore. With the swim platform for access and enough fairway, we reverse into our slip (which is not difficult once you get moving!

JohnShannon

We chartered a Sunsail 38 in the BVI which is a Jenneau 375 ( I think) two cabin version was nice for my wife and I plus the teenager. Sucked downwind jib was useless so yes a spinnaker would be good. The mainsheet and the jib share winches but the jib has a rope clutch so it works. There is a lot of friction in the mainsheet system. The two rudder setup is a little weird, as noted when backing the propwash does nothing for you. So gun it get some speed and then hope that forward works. Don't think it was as fast as my old Bene First 375, but wasn't terrible certainly easier to manage and roomier.

I have a twin rudder boat, a Bene 311 with a keel centerboard setup. Don't worry too much about the no prop wash on the rudder(s) in reverse, you will get used to it. Once I got accustomed to it, I can handle it the just like I did my old single rudder boat (forward and reverse). I have 2 boats at my house and only about about 33 feet between the stern of the sailboat and the other boat, I back the sailboat out of that space with no problem. In fact I continue to backup the sailboat until I reach the end of my canal about 400 or feet. It will take a little practice and a few white knuckles until you get used to it.

One of the best things about a forum is getting these unique insights before even stepping on board a very shinny boat. I'm pretty excited for my test sail, too bad it isn't till October. My slip is along the dock with a boat in front and behind so while I sail into it bow first I always reverse out around the aft boat and end of dock to swing bow around to exit the marine. I've gotten pretty good with the outboard and tiller and almost never have any drama leaving. Coming back in I basically just crawl in slow and stead and if the bow line pick up is missed it usually isn't a problem because I'm at a stop and snug to the dock that all I do is step off and tie up. My sailing and trim may not be awesome and cool but by god I make sure I don't look like an accident waiting to happen coming and going with all the eyes out!

From the very first glance, the Sun Odyssey 349 captivates with her pure lines, generous interior volume and inviting cockpit. This 2 Cabin 1 Head layout offers great room below deck to entertain and enjoy. The teak interior is warm and inviting. Topside is well equipped with custom bimini and dodger.

Designed by Marc Lombard and true to the values of the Sun Odyssey line, the 349 is the perfect combination of performance, comfort and safety at sea. Whether in the cockpit or at the helm, at anchorage or at sea, you will enjoy taking full advantage of this seaworthy, stable and easy-to-handle sailboat.

The interior is open and airy with ample headroom, and large windows and hatches. The galley includes a stove, oven and microwave. The head is to port and has a separate shower stall.

N’Joy is a breeze to sail with all lines led aft to the helm and winches that are within easy reach of the helm. The mainsheet is double ended so that is can be controlled from either helm station. The twin rudder configuration results in very little weather-helm and twin steering wheels allow easy access to the dock or swim platform.

N’Joy is a responsive, very well balanced, fun and fast sail boat with great cruising comforts. She sails very well in light air and points high upwind. She has a great interior layout, comfortable berths, excellent lighting and ventilation, and good storage. She gets great fuel mileage at cruising RPMs, burning only 0.5-0.6 gallons/hour at 2700 RPM. This gives her a cruising time of 57 hours and a range of 440 miles at 6.5 knots on a single tank of diesel fuel.

• The SO 349 won the Cruising World’s 2015 ‘Import Boat of the Year’ and the “2015 Pocket Cruiser Class.”

•  Standard mainsail for optimum sailing performance, speed, sail trim and fun.

•T win helms, twin rudders, and a hard chine, which provide greatly reduced weather helm when heeling and great upwind performance. Twin rudders also improve directional performance when motoring backward/astern.

•G enerous port side storage locker, which can hold lots of gear and bulky equipment and can be accessed from the cockpit.

• 3-blade folding prop, which improves speed over a fixed prop when sailing and motoring forward.

• Dual chart plotters, one of the port and the other on the starboard pedestal for easy navigation on any tack.

2019 Jeanneau 490

  • Description

Seller's Description

ONWER HAD OPEN CHECK-BOOK POLICY! This stunning YACHT is ready to sail away! Most sailors Believe the Jeanneau 490 is best model they have ever produced. 2 Cabin 2 Head with Storage / Work Shop. MUST SEE!!

Manufacturer Provided Description

To be the flagship of the walk around series, the Sun Odyssey 490 had to set the bar for innovation, performance, and comfort. Phillippe Briand and Jean-Marc Piaton took on the challenge and designed a boat that not only sets the standard for the Sun Odyssey range, but redefines what is capable in the 50 foot cruising market. In this design, Lombard added even more hull volume to the Sun Odyssey lines, delivering greater sailing performance, more interior space for guests comfort, and more lounge areas on topside.

As with every Sun Odyssey, the cockpit ergonomics are second to none. Every sheet is cleverly led to the helm station, where the boat can be easily single or double handed. The massive cockpit lounge is framed by the iconic walk around decks, which make movement around the boat easier than ever before. However, the game changer comes when the convertible coamings, the unfolding seat backs, are set up as beds. The entire aft eight feet of the boat transform into a cushioned sun bathing deck.

The open concept interior is bathed in light, as the main salon features many rows of windows and hatches. The central U-shaped galley is optimally placed for comfort while under way, as well as serving meals in the salon. In the 490, the nav station is particularly emphasized, as there is an aft facing bench added to it, elevating this feature into a coffee nook or home office.

However, it?s the forward stateroom where this boat really sets itself apart. The square queen bed has plenty of space to walk around on all sides, and the large central armoire is perfect for mounting a television for viewing in bed. The gorgeous shower stall is placed on centerline, allowing for 6’6’’ headroom; a luxury usually only found on much larger boats.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Overall Length with Bowsprit 14.80 m / 48.5’ Hull length 14.00 m / 45.92’ Shoal keel draft 1.65 0 m / 5.33’ ICW compatible mast option: 19.20 m / 63’

COMMENTS

  1. SUN ODYSSEY 349 (JEANNEAU)

LENGTH: Traditionally, LOA (length over all) equaled hull length. Today, many builders use LOA to include rail overhangs, bowsprits, etc. and LOD (length on deck) for hull length. That said, LOA may still mean LOD if the builder is being honest and using accepted industry standards developed by groups like the ABYC (American Boat and Yacht Council).
