ECLIPSE features

The yacht is powered by a single MTU 12V183TE1 engine, delivering 615 horsepower and enabling a cruising speed of 11 knots with a remarkable range of 4000 nautical miles on engine power alone. The maximum hull speed is 15 knots. ECLIPSE’s propulsion system includes a ZF gearbox and a Scandinavian controllable pitch propeller, ensuring efficient and reliable performance.

ECLIPSE's rigging and sails are equally impressive, featuring a 39.6-meter Southern Spars stepped carbon fiber mast and a carbon composite boom shell. The rigging was updated in 2011, and the yacht is equipped with Doyle Stratis sails from 2017, including a main sail, staysail, genoa, and an asymmetrical spinnaker. This sail setup ensures optimal performance and handling in various wind conditions, making ECLIPSE a high-performance yacht.

The yacht’s recent refit in 2024 included a total repaint of the hull, servicing of the 55kw generators, an overhaul of the main engine, and numerous upgrades to ensure the vessel remains in top condition. Other key refit highlights include new UV cover, rebuilt bow and stern thrusters, and a comprehensive service of the air conditioning system. Additionally, the yacht received new carpet in the main salon, new Bosch ovens in the galley, and a thorough maintenance of the underwater hull.

ECLIPSE’s navigation and communication equipment are state-of-the-art, featuring VHF radiotelephones, SSB radiotelephone, GPS, B&G Zeus chart plotters, and wind instruments, ensuring safe and efficient navigation. The yacht also offers modern audio and visual entertainment systems, including a 78” television in the master cabin, a 40” television in the main salon, and a Fusion stereo music system.

The deck equipment on ECLIPSE includes two anchor windlasses, multiple winches, a hydraulic crane in the lazarette, and manual swimming and passerelle ladders. For added safety, the yacht is equipped with liferafts, life jackets, an EPIRB, and a comprehensive firefighting system.

The yacht's auxiliary machinery and equipment include two Northern Lights 55kw generators, a Matrix watermaker, and a Dometic air conditioning and heating system. The 21500-liter fuel capacity and 6000-liter water capacity provide extended shore independence, while the Lifeline AGM house batteries allow for silent cruising of up to 10 hours, excluding air conditioning and galley operations.

Onboard, ECLIPSE accommodates seven guests in three luxurious cabins, including a full-beam master cabin with a king-size bed and ensuite bathroom, a VIP cabin with a queen-size bed and ensuite bathroom, and a guest cabin with twin beds and a bunk, also featuring an ensuite bathroom. Moody Eclipse 33 review

  • Chris Beeson
  • January 11, 2016

The Moody Eclipse 33 was and still is highly sought-after. Duncan Kent looks at one to see why

See the November 2015 issue of Yachting Monthly for the full test

What’s she like to sail?

At first glance you think she’s going to perform like a typical motorsailer, dogged but slow. Take a more studied look at her hull shape – waterline, stem entry, narrow shoulders and so on – and you begin to wonder. Her hull has the lines of a reasonably modern yacht, although a tad beamier than normal for her era.

Knowing she had bilge keels also made me doubt her performance before we even left the quay, so it was a pleasant surprise to find she sailed considerably better than I had anticipated. We set out in a 10-12 knot south-westerly breeze and a flattish sea. We unfurled full sail in minutes and were soon comfortably reaching over Christchurch’s notorious bar, making a leisurely 5-knots out to sea. She tacked through 88°-90° swiftly, as we returned to the harbour entrance and hove to impressively.

The wind (and rain) increased through the day and, had I not been putting her through her paces I might well have stayed at the inside helm station, where the view forward is good until heavily heeled to port. Both wheels gave a light but stiff feel, due to the extra linkages, although she showed no signs of weather helm – even when a 24-knot gust tried to round her up.

Off the wind her weight tells and she slows markedly, but nothing a good cruising chute or spinnaker wouldn’t overcome.

What’s she like in port and at anchor?

At some point I believe we all start looking enviously at folk with deck saloons – especially during a summer like the one we’ve experienced this year! But what stops most of us from moving over to a boat that offers a bit of protection from the elements is usually the thought of a tubby yacht, sailing nowhere fast. Well, I’m glad to say the Moody Eclipse 33 isn’t one of them.

Below decks, she offers a surprising amount of comfortable living space. The raised saloon is a real boon, giving you a fantastic all-round view of the anchorage as well as providing enough seating for four to dine in comfort or six for cosy drinks. The large deckhouse windows also make the entire saloon, galley and navigation areas bright and cheery, whatever the weather.

She also has berths for six, comprising a big vee-berth forward, a surprisingly roomy double aft and a pull-out double in the saloon if you really want to pack them in. Her galley is also well-equipped with stowage and worksurface aplenty. I’ve also seen a smaller heads compartment in a 40ft boat!

Would she suit you and your crew?

There comes a time when comfort and warmth become more important than getting out on the water regardless. Now just past 60, I am starting to feel that way. You have three choices, really – move you or the boat somewhere warm and sunny, buy a deck saloon yacht, or give up sailing completely. I don’t intend to do the latter until I can no longer climb aboard and I’ve done the boat abroad bit. So that leaves the deckhouse option, which actually has the added benefit of stretching your sailing season. You’re far more likely to go winter sailing if you can pop below and warm up between tacks and dry your oilies out using hot air from the heating system. They really do have so much going for them, I can’t understand why they aren’t more popular.

Cast your vote in the inaugural World Cup of Superyachts

Eclipse crowned the winner of the first World Cup of Superyachts

After a gruelling week of competition and over 47,000 votes cast, the 162 metre Blohm+Voss superyacht Eclipse has been crowned the winner of the inaugural World Cup of Superyachts.

The competition began with 16 of the greatest yachts drawn from a hat and the number was swiftly whittled down to a face-off in the grand final between Eclipse and Octopus - two of the most impressive yachts ever built.

  • Step on board the 162.5m Eclipse - the second largest superyacht in the world

At 162 metres in length, Eclipse had size on her side as one of the largest yachts in the world (second only to Azzam who she knocked out in the semi-finals). With nine decks and the design talents of the legendary Terence Disdale touching every curve and corner, she is a truly remarkable vessel. But what Octopus may lack in size at a comparably modest 126 metres, she more than makes up for in her pandora's box of toys, from the two helicopters sitting side by side in the hangar to the 10-person Pagoo submarine (not to mention her globetrotting 12,500 nautical mile range.)

The competition was tough and the battle well fought, but it was Eclipse that came out on top after a week of voting across social media and boatinternational.com.
