Yacht crew salary guide

A Yacht Chef is a position integral to ensuring that guests have an amazing yachting experience by creating unique and unforgettable meal experiences.

Gastronomy and the art of fine dining has become as integral a part of the superyacht experience as the water itself. Superyachts offer the ultimate luxury escape, and that must be reflected in the exquisite food served to guests throughout their time onboard. A Yacht Chef is the mastermind behind creating unique and unforgettable meals.

A yacht Chef is predominantly in charge of guest and crew meals and managing all aspects of running the galley. Superyacht guests are accustomed to eating at the best restaurants and unsurprisingly because of this, expectations can be very high. Superyacht Chefs are therefore expected to provide a wide range of cuisine, adapt to different dietary requirements, deliver high-quality food prepared upon request and keep the crew well fed.

The galley will run with different chefs depending on the size of the yacht:

• Head Chef — The Head of the galley and as such the chef responsible for all the food that is served. On some yachts this is a Sole Chef role, whilst on others the role will involve managing other Chefs.

• Sous Chef — This role works closely with the Head Chef, assisting them and potentially covering for them in their absence. Every yacht is different, so on some yachts the Sous Chef is also in charge of preparing crew food, while other yachts may have both a Sous Chef and a Crew Chef.

• Crew Chef — This role is primarily focused on cooking for the crew of the yacht. A Crew Chef is a role usually found on larger superyachts where the number of crew is greater, so a separate Chef will be employed to make sure the crew’s needs are met.

• Galley Hand — A Galley Hand is normally found on yachts over 100m in length. Depending on the type, size and itinerary of the yacht, the duties of this role can include meal prep, galley cleaning and assisting with crew food.

• Cook/Stew — This position is more common on smaller yachts and is often split between cooking and Stew duties, or assisting with Stew duties, depending on the size of the yacht. Some vessels hire a Cook/Stew in the winter to cook for the crew and help with interior duties.

What does a yacht Chef do? | Yacht Chef Job Description

The main priority for a yacht Chef is to make sure that everyone on board has an unforgettable meal. A yacht Chef has access to the best quality ingredients available, so it is up to them to use their creativity to produce the most awe-inspiring dining experience.

A Chef onboard some of the most advanced yachts in the world has the opportunity of experimenting with some of the finest quality ingredients in the world, and often not easily acquirable on land jobs. They may be asked to spontaneously pull out ‘all the stops’ and let their imagination run wild. Or, they might be requested to provide innovative and exciting meals for guests with strict dietary restrictions.

As a yacht Chef, adaptability is key. Some guests may want simple home cooking; if they ask for a burger, it's up to the Chef to make it the best, tastiest burger that they have ever eaten! If the guests want spaghetti carbonara, they need to make it taste like an Italian grandmother’s spaghetti carbonara!

While Chefs still have a certain budget to stick to, one difference between working on a yacht and in a restaurant is that they don’t have to worry about trying to make a profit. All they need to do is keep the owners, guests and crew happy.

As well as creating stand-out meals, Chefs are in charge of budget management,  provisioning, and ensuring that the galley adheres to strict standards of hygiene and cleanliness. It is their responsibility that everything runs smoothly in the galley. A Chef works closely and liaises often with the Chief Stew , to ensure that guests receive a seamless streamlined service from the galley to the table.

The responsibilities of a yacht Chef include:

Meal preparation for both guests and crew

Daily menu planning

Liaising with the Chief Stew or Head of Service to deliver seamless service

Food provisioning and inventory checks

Organisation of the galley and maintaining cleanliness and hygiene

Supervision of a team of Chefs (depending on the size of the yacht)

Budgeting and accounting

Soft and hard skills required to be a yacht Chef

Yacht Chefs should show real passion and enthusiasm for what they do: many successful yacht Chefs do stages and additional training during their time off. The ideal candidate demonstrates a diverse repertoire, flexible and adaptable qualities, and the ability to work well under pressure.

The skills of a good yacht Chef include:

A genuine passion for cooking

Diverse knowledge of produce and the ability to provision all over the world

Menu planning knowledge

Ability to skilfully multitask

Ability to handle criticism

Creativity

Presentation skills

Excellent communication skills and a positive attitude

Organization and time management skills

Cleanliness and hygiene

Flexibility and adaptability

Ability to work under pressure

Mandatory certificates needed to work on board a yacht

All crew members regardless of position and seniority need to have a valid STCW Basic Safety Training certificate, along with a recognised Seafarers medical certificate, the most popular being the ENG1 which is issued by an MCA (Maritime and Coastguard Agency) professional medic.

Without these two certificates, it is not possible for crew to work on board a yacht and a Recruiter will not be able to assist you in finding work onboard a yacht.  For more information about mandatory certificates please visit our Mandatory Certificates Guide .

How to Get a Job as a Yacht Chef

Yacht chef plating a meal

Lauren Beck is the former editor of Dockwalk and was with the publication from 2006 to 2023. At 13, she left South Africa aboard a 34-foot sailing boat with her family and ended up in St. Maarten for six years. Before college, she worked as crew for a year, and then cut her journalistic teeth at Better Homes and Gardens and Ladies’ Home Journal online. She loves traveling, reading, tennis, and rooting for the Boston Red Sox.

If you have a flair for food, eye for detail, and dream of traveling the world, a career as a yacht chef could be for you. Here's everything you will need to score a job as a chef on board a luxury yacht...

If you’re a talented chef who’s always dreamed of running away to sea, we’re here to tell you that it’s possible to combine those dreams. You could travel the world while putting your hard-earned chef skills to the test by cooking for an international group of charter guests and yacht crew.

But before you throw caution to the wind, you need to do your research. “If a chef is at the stage where they’re considering whether to move into yachting, then it’s always a good idea to talk to others in the industry to hear first-hand what life as a yacht chef is like,” says Nicola Reed, partner at Amandine International Chef Placement .

Justine Murphy, a crew agent and former yacht chef who founded mymuybueno Private Chefs , agrees. “There are so many great yacht chef Facebook groups — posting there for insight and advice or searching previous discussions is beneficial, in real-time from chefs who are working on yachts,” Murphy says. “They can offer really helpful and supportive advice. It is a very special community, and everyone wants to help.”

Here’s more of what to know before you get started on the path to your first superyacht galley.

What is a Yacht Chef?

A superyacht chef is tasked with cooking for both the crew aboard the yacht and the charter guests or vessel owners who stay on board. The expectations are very high — superyacht chefs are expected to deliver high-quality, delicious, varied food cooked to the highest standards possible upon request.

“I thought I worked long hours in the restaurant business, but being on board, especially when you’re on charters, you can be putting in eighteen to twenty-hour days, every day, and it’s not like in a restaurant, [where] it would just be one or two days at a time. A weeklong charter, sometimes two, you’re doing it every day and there’s no stopping,” says Chef Thomas Day III of 35-meter M/Y Tail Lights .

What Does a Yacht Chef Do?

The chef runs the galley on board, so everything that happens in the galley is under their purview.

Chef Day shares the long list of items he juggles on board, including all menu planning, which accommodates specific guest preferences, and coordination with the interior department for themes, etc. He also handles the food budgeting and provisioning and has to stay on top of inventory — plates, cups, and utensils to ensure there’s always enough for the maximum number of guests on board. He works with the interior department to help with wine, liquor, and beverage provisioning and inventory, too. He’s also responsible for keeping his galley space clean. “[I’m] always detail cleaning to keep equipment in the best shape possible,” he says. “Keeping up on daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance checks — and guests may enter at any time, so [you] need to stay cleaned and organized.”

  • Q&A with Chef Henri Kriel

Chef Day notes that since he’s on a 35-meter yacht, he also helps out the other departments when needed, which could include helping the deck team set up for docking, anchoring, even washdowns. He also holds a watch on board. These duties may vary depending on vessel size, but if you’re the sole chef, you could expect to handle the chef duties alone. On larger vessels with potentially more bodies in the galley, your duties could vary.

“It’s hard work,” says Murphy. “[It’s] long hours and you need to prepare for the unexpected at every turn. Massively good organization skills, time management, and communication is key.”

Who Does the Chef Report to?

The chef runs their own department, but ultimately reports to the captain. On larger vessels, there could be multiple chef positions, including sous chef and crew chef. On smaller vessels, you may find the galley has just one chef — the sole chef.

“You’re doing absolutely everything yourself — there’s no space, the pace is really fast, the expectations are super high,” says Chef Phillippa Brown during her Instagram Live interview with Dockwalk . The chef and the interior departments do have to work very closely together, so it’s very important that the relationship works seamlessly between the two .

What Qualifications Do I Need to Become a Yacht Chef?

“As an absolute minimum, this would be the STCW course and an ENG1 medical certificate along with a Food Hygiene Level 2 course (completed at a training center rather than online),” says Reed. She cautions that there could be others depending on vessel size and flag, whether it’s commercial or private only, and the number of crew on board.

“Depending on what kind of job the chef is looking for, they might also want to consider looking into getting a Ship’s Cook Certificate, which is required by many commercial yachts that carry 10 or more crew,” she says. Reed also recommends a Proficiency in Security Awareness Certificate, which she notes is required for commercial yachts over a certain size, or a Proficiency in Designated Security Duties, which supersedes the Security Awareness Certificate. Amandine usually advises chefs that having the Ship’s Cook Certificate will open more doors for them. “Without it, it’s still possible to build a career in the industry, but the chef’s choice of yachts will be more limited,” she says.

  • Q&A with Chef Anthony Bantoft

There is one caveat about the Ship’s Cook Certificate that might put it initially out of reach, explains Murphy — you need sea time before you can get it. It can be very useful to have — “if you are not a culinary trained chef, having this in hand is the next best thing to validate that you can deliver just as well as a culinary trained chef,” she says.

What Experience Do I Need?

“Some culinary training and/or a strong restaurant background is always beneficial as chefs are required to work at a fast pace and remain organized and on top of things at all times,” says Reed. “Private experience can also be very beneficial, too, such as working as a chalet chef or villa chef to gain experience in running your own kitchen before doing this at sea.” She also recommends chefs coming in have experiences in a range of different cuisine styles and dietary requirements, like vegan or gluten free, etc. “This is also very useful as these things can crop up a lot among both guests and crew.”

Experienced yacht chefs believe that a professional background is essential. “I think going into yachting as a chef without a really solid cheffing background is just really an impossibility,” says Chef Brown. “The transition is tough.” She has coached a few chefs transitioning into yachting and she shared that they’re always amazed by how much work is involved, especially in the sole chef position. “It’s not for everybody, but it’s really well rewarded,” she says.

“I would say yes, it’s good to have some kind of restaurant experience. If you come into yachting not knowing how to run a kitchen, or [not knowing] proper timing, you’re going to fail,” says Chef Day.

But the agents who place chefs say there is room for those without a professional background. “Being self-taught is nothing to be frowned upon, plenty of amazing chefs in the world are and the same can be said within the superyacht industry too,” Murphy says, who shares that this is the route she personally took. “Others are cooks who get into the industry from a sheer love of cooking, and are really good cooks, who then develop further over the years ahead through short- or longer-term courses to continue learning, developing their skills, and become incredible chefs. Some may then work to gain culinary qualifications further down the line too.”

Reed agrees. “It’s not essential and there are plenty of chefs out there who are self-taught and have learned on the job from a more experienced yacht chef,” she says. She also recommends that chefs new to yachting should consider taking a sous chef or second chef role to learn the yachting ropes initially. "Most chefs would agree they benefited from working under an experienced yacht chef when they first started out, to learn about provisioning at sea and how to run a galley, before taking over a head chef position themselves,” she says. You could also start out as a sole chef on a smaller vessel with fewer crew and guests on board.

  • Q&A with Chef Grace Dvornik

But aside from your experience, attitude is key. “Being humble is also a redeeming quality,” Murphy says. “Just because you may have been a head chef on land, doesn’t translate the same way on yachts — you still need to get your foot in the door and then commit to that first role.” Like all hiring managers everywhere, people like to see longevity in your previous roles. “If you have proven loyalty with previous employers on land and excellent references, this will strengthen your profile and reflect well for any vessel providing that all-important first yacht role,” Murphy says.

How Much Does a Yacht Chef Earn?

As a chef, your pay will vary depending on your title. As a head chef on board, you will usually command higher pay. In fact, a head chef’s pay can be on par with a chief engineer. According to the most recent 2021 Dockwalk Salary Survey , yacht chefs can do very well financially, depending on a few factors.

Dockwalk ’s chef pay across all size categories ranges from $4,000 to $17,775 per month on the very largest vessels. In the smaller size categories up to 120 feet, you could see salaries up to $11,800 per month. As the boat size grows, the pay does too. From 120 to 160 feet, the rate ranges up to $14,000 per month, then increases to $15,000, with salaries on vessels larger than 250-foot plus ranging from $10,000 up to $18,000.

According to the  Salary Survey data , the crew chef/sous chef position pays between $4,000 and $7,00+ across all size ranges. Depending on yacht size, the sous chef and the crew chef role can be different. One thing to note is that longevity, experience, and certifications can also affect your salary.

How to Apply for a Yacht Chef Job

Once you’re ready to step on board, it’s time to start registering with crew agencies for placement. You should have everything ready and available to upload to your profile, advises Murphy of mymuybueno. “This includes your best plated food photos to showcase your work, menu plans, documents, and references,” she says. You should also include a headshot of yourself in a chef jacket on your CV, she says, cautioning crew to fill out all information carefully and correctly and make sure everything is spell-checked.

“Networking, being proactive, staying positive are all the attributes that will help,” Murphy says, also advising chefs to keep checking in with their agencies and build a relationship with them individually. This helps them get to know you well and better allows them to help find the right first role for you.

YACHT CHEF JOBS

What is a galley without its chef? A vital and rewarding role onboard any yacht, a yacht chef keeps all its crew, guests and owners well-fed and happy. Similar to any head chef in a restaurant, a yacht chef has to be even more creative with their talents, as they must perform their tasks on board of a moving vessel – with occasionally limited, or hard to come-by supplies. Part entertainer, full-time cook, a yacht chef will have to be aware of all dietary needs, allergies and food requirements of those on board while being able to work hard under pressure. Most yacht chefs will have likely started their career in a restaurant or hotel before making the switch to the yachting industry.

If you have excellent cooking, cleaning and management skills, together with a charismatic and solid personality, then why not apply for a position as a yacht chef? It’s recommended to start a yachting career as a crew chef, or sous chef for a few seasons before applying for a head Chef role. Browse through our full yacht chef job listings today.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

A yacht chef’s responsibilities include preparing and cooking three meals a day. Yacht chefs must also manage their food budget and deal with the galley accounts, overseeing the safe food storage and stock control. As most guests aboard any yacht are accustomed to dining at the finest restaurants around the world, a skilled yacht chef must be flexible, very skilled and be able to prepare a broad repertoire of foods from around the world. Maintaining high levels of food and personal hygiene are also key aspects of a yacht chef’s role.

YACHT CHEF SALARIES

acht chef salaries tend to vary, depending on the level of experience as well as the size and type of yacht they are working on. Head chefs’ salaries can range from €3,500 to €10,000 a month, depending on the size of the vessel. Sous chefs average pay scale varies from €3,000 to €6,000 per month. Yachts between 81m and 100m offer the highest average monthly pay for both roles.

Captain Glenn, Daisy Kelliher & Gary King Are Going To Ibiza For ‘Below Deck Sailing Yacht’ Season 5

Where to Stream:

  • Below Deck Sailing Yacht

‘Below Deck Med’s Chef Johnathan Shillingford Thinks Aesha Scott Handled Those Rude Charter Guests “Very Well”

‘below deck’s 8 worst guests of all-time: from jill zarin to delores the midnight swimmer, ‘below deck mediterranean’ exclusive clip: aesha scott stands up for herself against a rude charter guest.

At long last, Below Deck Sailing Yacht returns for its fifth season on October 7. Captain Glenn Shephard , chief stew Daisy Kelliher , and first mate Gary King are leading the Parsifal III into unchartered waters this season: Ibiza. While fans will miss OG cast member Colin MacRae—whose romance with Kelliher ended very, very badly—there is a new crew of yachties to obsess over this season. Chief engineer Davide Morosi, chef Cloyce Martin, deckhands Keith Allen and Emma Crouch, and stews Diana Cruz and Danni Warren will no doubt be stirring up trouble as they work hard during charters and party hard on their nights off.

The trailer begins on a sad note. Now single, Kelliher returns to the Parsifal III. “Going into this season, I got rid of some dead weight,” Kellier says via voiceover as footage of MacRae and Kelliher canoodling flashes on the screen. “The breakup did a number on me last year, but now, I’m coming back more focused, full of energy.” As she sits triumphantly in her confessional seat, Kelliher says firmly to camera: “I’m fucking good at my job, and I’m taking back the reins.” On cue, the very next scene is Kelliher yelling at King while he lies in his bunk. “I’m not fucking carrying this season on my own, you fucking prick!” The more things change, the more they stay the same.

The trailer then continues to show off its new setting: Ibiza. “Ibiza is known as being the party capital of the world,” says Captain Glenn via voiceover. As guests are shown enjoying themselves, the yacht heels, causing random objects to shatter. Later, the crew gathers for their first meeting. “This is the last time we’ll all be friends so enjoy it,” Kelliher tells the team. “We”ll either fuck each other or fight each other.” “Or both,” replies Captain Glenn cheekily.

A montage of chaos ensues as Kelliher spills a drink, guests boink their heads, and Martin sets off a fire alarm while trying to achieve a fancy, flaming presentation. Morosi is even shown fully nude trying drunkenly to climb into the bed above Captain Glenn’s in their shared cabin. “You all right?” asks Captain Glenn warily. “Nearly,” says Morosi shakily.

While several hookups between the crew are shown—including Kelliher and Martin—and people are shown doing their jobs poorly, the most dramatic part of the trailer involves Captain Glenn’s reading the crew the riot act after giving them permission to party with some guests during a charter. “I set some ground rules, two drinks maximum,” says Captain Glenn as he scolds the crew. “You knew the rules, you broke the fucking rules, and now you’re here getting upset.” Stunned, the group can only look on.

As the trailer ends on a dramatic scene when another yacht is about to crash into the Parsifal III. Below Deck Sailing Yacht fans are left to wonder: could this be the most dramatic season yet? Tune in to Bravo on Monday, October 7 at 9/8c to find out!

The Bosun is one of the most important and prominent positions on Below Deck . No matter the franchise, the Bosun is often seen leading the deck team , working with the captain, and proving why they are integral to the yacht. This season on Below Deck Mediterranean , Bosun Iain Maclean seems to be completely MIA. It's not that he's been edited out of the show for misconduct, he just seems to be an unimportant player in the season's storytelling.

Below Deck Med is one of the successful spinoff shows of the flagship series. Now in its 9th season, Below Deck Mediterranean brings stunning locales alongside high-octane drama through the lives of the yachties who work on board. This season, Mustique is traveling through the beautiful seas of Greece. As the charter season is about to end, will Iain Maclean be there to clink champagne at the end?

Iain Maclean Started Off in Hot Water

When Season 9 of Below Deck Mediterranean began, Captain Sandy Yawn had a brand-new crew, with one old friend returning after a few years away. Despite having Aesha Scott as a stew previously, it was her first time having her in a managerial position. For Captain Sandy, it was a new character season with new heads of departments. Leading the exterior was Iain Maclean . He seemed like a decent guy. The South African yachtie had experience. About five years in the industry. At least, based on being appointed as Bosun, one would think that Maclean was the best fit for the position. But as the charter season got underway, fans were convinced that the Bosun would be the first to get the ax from Captain Sandy.

Early on in the season, Captain Sandy Yawn felt strongly that Iain was a bit lazy. His team, comprised of Joe Bradley, Nathan Gallagher , and Gael Cameron , continually called out his missteps. He had been ridiculed for his poor communication skills. He even nearly left character guests and a crew member out at sea. Between himself and Chef Jono Shillingford , some fans expected an early season departure, but with Captain Sandy trying to have a perfect season, both men stayed on board. When it came to action on deck, Iain's biggest decision of the season came when he appointed Joe Bradley as Lead Deckhand. And Joe, well, he seems to be doing a much better job than his superior. And from there, Iain has been scarcely seen on camera. While Iain may be perceived as lazy in the eyes of Captain Sandy and his team, the reality is that nothing insanely wrong has happened. At least that made it onto camera. So is it possible Iain's just doing his job? Is that the worst thing?

Iain Mclean Doesn't Provide Typical Reality TV Drama

Much of this season's action has focused on the dueling relationship drama. On the deck, Nathan Gallagher and Gael Cameron have fostered a special relationship. Though Gael has let go of her long-distance boyfriend for her coworker, it's been a key source of action. It's been a lovey-dovey story, despite the heartbreak Gael has caused the voice-only ex. Then there is the feud between Elena Dubaich and Bri Muller . The two stews have had a rivalry, not only trying to prove they are the best stew on board, but also trying to win over the heart of Joe Bradley, who's been playing them against one another. Now, with a fourth stew in the mix, Carrie O'Neill , joined the fray which has complicated the ever-expanding love triangle, as Joe likes new things. So where does Iain fit in this season? Captain Sandy is her own entity. Chief Stew Aesha Scott is not looking for love. Chef Jono has a yacht boyfriend. When it comes to reality television drama, Iain's just not providing. Iain Maclean is just too real.

Finally, in the penultimate episode, Iain finally got to go out on land and help lead an excursion. As he said in confessional, "In my role, I'm more behind the scenes making everything run. I've always been like the entertainment person." So Iain got to play tour guide of the Temple of Poseidon. He knew the facts of the landmark. He dropped them like they were hot. And that was his shining moment. A complete blip in the bigger scheme of the season.

Just an episode before, one of Iain’s rare appearances on screen was via a confessional where he stated the obvious: “Docking at nighttime is different from docking during the day. Because it’s nighttime.” Well, thank you, Iain! It was a funny moment, but is that what Iain will be remembered for when the season comes to a close? Maybe communication is one of his weak points. Whether producers were giving him a bad edit or simply editing him out of the season, Iain’s presence is nearly non-existent. Perhaps Iain is actually doing such a great job as Boson that there’s simply nothing to show! But, based on earlier episodes, that seems unlikely. Interestingly, Iain's Instagram makes no mention of his participation on the show . Nevertheless, Iain Maclean is one of the least-seen Bosons in the history of the franchise. He seemed like a nice chap. It's a shame that he wasn't a part of the narrative of the season. Below Deck Mediterranean airs new episodes every Monday at 9:00pm on Bravo . All episodes are available to stream on Peacock .

Below Deck Mediterranean

In a luxury charter yacht traveling across the Mediterranean, crew members face both the challenges of managing upscale guest expectations and the complexities of their own interrelationships. Each episode highlights the high-octane world of yachting where exceptional service standards meet personal drama and adventure.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 Trailer Teases New Dynamics for Captain Glenn

It's time to sail-ebrate, because  Below Deck Sailing Yacht  returns for Season 5 this October.

The announcement came on Monday, Sept. 16, as did the release of the official trailer (which you can check out above), the crew line-up, and more details.

When does Season 5 of Below Deck Sailing Yacht premiere?

Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 premieres on Monday, Oct. 7 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Bravo. Episodes will be available to stream next day on Peacock.

Who is the crew for Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5?

Captain Glenn Shephard  is back aboard  Parsifal III with returning department heads Chief Stew Daisy Kelliher and First Mate  Gary King . New crew members include Chef Cloyce Martin , Chief Engineer Davide Morosi , stews Diana Cruz and Danni Warren , and deckhands Keith Allen and Emma Crouch .

Where does Season 5 of Below Deck Sailing Yacht take place?

Captain Glenn and his expert crew are setting sail in Ibiza for Season 5. A press release describes the locale as "the luxury party capital of the world" known for "sunny day parties and a crystal-clear coast."

What can fans expect on Season 5 of Below Deck Sailing Yacht ?

The crew aboard Parsifal III will have to "navigate" everything from "competitive co-workers" to "tense personal dynamics, all while trying to raise the bar every charter," according to a press release.

What's more, this season "Daisy is ready to take the reins back in the interior department with a new sense of energy and determination," the release continues. "However, plans for a stress-free charter season are threatened when her stews question her leadership."

"On deck, Gary attempts to keep his team motivated as one crew member struggles to learn the ropes. In the galley, Chef Cloyce charms the crew and guests but at only 22, he may be too inexperienced to meet the demands of the high-maintenance charter guests," the press release concludes.

But now I'm coming back in, more focused, full of energy. I'm f-cking good at my job and I'm taking back the reins."
