With her owner-inspired shimmering Art Deco interiors and Manhattan-style glamour, together with Winch Design, PHOENIX 2 dazzles inside and out with the promise of legendary entertainment. You can almost see Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan foxtrotting around the gilt-and-black lacquer Steinway in the main deck ballroom. A grand dining table is overlooked by the swinging six-piece jazz band in custom-made gold bas-relief murals as a crystal chandelier dazzles overhead with fine wines from the sommelier room next door. You’ve arrived.

New York and its skyline were the inspiration for this yacht’s styling, from the Empire State skyscrapers on the bar stools in the sky lounge bar, lit by uplighters reminiscent of the torch held by the Statue of Liberty, to the firebird figurehead that looks as if it may have flown in from the Chrysler Building. Everything, from the door handles to the cutlery, is hand-made, each a work of art in its own right.

From the ballroom, move aft past the full-height windows, circular lounge and onto the aft deck, where a spiral staircase leads up to the upper deck and the emphasis on good times continues. Past the buffet lounge is a winter garden with guest dining in open air or climate control, as conditions dictate, then continue down the boardwalk-style sidedecks to the jacuzzi lounge.

After a night of revelry, head to the bridge deck. Take the rivetted-aluminium spiral staircase or the elevator, which runs from the tank deck, home to the Radio City-inspired cinema with popcorn maker, to the bridge deck, and you’ll find a gym overlooking the aft helipad (there is a second on the foredeck). Sweat it out in the hammam or have a massage in the beauty salon. After that, the sun deck beckons, with its 7m (23ft) oval pool with skylights filtering natural light into the lobby below. Then soak up the sun or snooze in the shade on the sunpads and sun lounges.

To get ashore, take the elevator to the lower deck lobby where one of two 10m (32.8ft) tenders is waiting to take you wherever you want to go. For using an armada of watertoys however, the place to be is the 4m (13.1ft)-deep swim platform, complete with hydraulic bathing steps.

The full-beam owner’s suite, forward on the main deck, is similarly bewitching. Accessed from the main deck or via a glass spiral staircase from the owner’s private observation lounge and office on the upper deck. The circular sweep of the windows and their wraparound views is echoed in the black circle in the carpet and the recessed lighting overhead. A spectacular his-and-hers bathrooms in contrasting marbles features a bath and a steam shower and one of the walk-in wardrobes can be concealed should her new owner wish to operate her commercially.

With a range of 6,000nm and Quantum stabilisers, this impeccably maintained 2,667GT yacht, defies limits on what is possible.

Boat of the Week: The Elegant 295-Foot Superyacht Will Transport You Back to New York’s Art Deco Period

A 16-foot-long metal sculpture of the mythical bird on the end of the bow gives a hint of the dramatic features inside the boat., julia zaltzman, julia zaltzman's most recent stories.

The 295-foot Phoenix 2 is a heavily stylized design by Winch Design with an art-deco interior.

The principal owner was heavily involved in the boat’s design. Though he passed away a few years after taking delivery in May 2010, the yacht has remained in the family. Phoenix 2 was his second Winch-designed yacht, but his first new build.

The former, also named Phoenix , was penned for a different owner who had requested a Parisian art-deco theme. Phoenix 2 was the boat that he wanted to build, and New York was his art-deco city of choice.

“The owner was a powerful businessman and very proud of it,” says Dixon. “He wanted Phoenix 2 to reference the boom time of 1920s New York—the art-deco architecture and that period of industrialization. It was much stronger in character than his previous yacht.”

In a subtle nod to the Big Apple, the external side decks are large enough for two people to comfortably walk abreast, and the New York skyline is outlined in polished stainless-steel on the upper deck bar stools. A more overt example of the theme is the plated stainless-steel Phoenix sculpture on the bow, which is a direct representation of the eagles on the Chrysler building.

“The owner wanted his yacht to be longer than his friend’s, so we welded and bolted on a 16-foot phoenix figurehead on the bow,” Andrew Winch told Robb Report . “It’s absolutely enormous, weighs 5.5 tons and gave the owner the extra 16 feet he was looking for.”

The interior keeps to four main colors—black, cream, gold and burgundy—with high-gloss macassar wood and gold leaf used to reflect 1920s glamor.

Adjacent is a round room with a reinforced floor where a custom black-and-gold Steinway piano sits. Designed as a one-off, it has a phoenix emblazoned on its side and took two years to build. The crew of 28 include a pianist and guitarist, as well as a massage therapist and chocolatier.

“The owner was a consummate host and Phoenix 2 was all about dining, music and entertainment,” says Winch. “He liked to think that his dinner guests became the orchestra, while he was seated at the head as the conductor.”

The yacht also has a spa, gym and hammam for relaxation. A wine cellar is stocked with the finest Italian and Bordeaux wines. The owner’s love of art is evident in the yacht’s prized collection, including a Modigliani in one of the guest suites.

The art-deco theme continues in the lower-deck cinema. On the top deck is a second outdoor cinema and a swimming pool with portholes in the floor to allow natural light to fill the staterooms below. The forward master suite is spread across two levels.

On the main deck is the bedroom, dressing room and ensuite, with another elaborate mural and a vanity table with refrigerated cosmetic drawers. A private spiral staircase leads to the owner’s deck with an observation lounge and office where a desk made from high gloss macassar and mother of pearl inlay takes pride of place.

The 295-foot Phoenix 2 is a heavily stylized design by Winch Design with an art-deco interior.

“The owner felt the panoramic views would be wasted on a master bedroom where he wouldn’t spend as much time,” says Dixon. “A private lounge gives him another level of privacy and is the room the family enjoy spending time in the most.”

One of the few changes made since the original design is an extension to the swim platform. Though the principal didn’t live to enjoy his yacht for as long as hoped, his family has cruised Europe and the Caribbean. “The yacht crosses the Atlantic every year,” Captain Ian Howcroft told Robb Report .

For sale for $134 million with yacht broker Burgess, Phoenix 2 is ready to rise from the ashes and give a modern Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan a chance to foxtrot around the high seas.

Phoenix 2: On board Lürssen’s 90m superyacht inspired by New York’s skyline

With her rich, art deco-inspired styling and a layout that focuses on entertaining, 90 metre Phoenix 2 feels like the floating version of Jay Gatsby’s mansion. To get a feel for her star quality, Katia Damborsky steps on board.

“I think it's great if you go on this boat and you haven't seen it for five years,” muses Andrew Winch, whose team designed every inch of Phoenix 2 ’s eye-catching exteriors and remarkable interiors. “You will find things that you recognise and remember, but you will also find things that you didn't see the first time around.”

As soon as I step on board Phoenix 2 a few weeks later, I discover Winch is right. Phoenix 2 treads a fine line between wow-factor features that are impossible to forget - such as cherry velvet floors and a gold-gilded grand piano — and subtle details, evident in the owner’s brief for all-custom everything. Perhaps unsurprisingly for an owner with a penchant for music, the balance is in perfect harmony.

You'd never guess this yacht was delivered over a decade ago. Not only is she subject to rigorous maintenance periods that keep her in immaculate condition, she also has an air of elegance that suggests she’ll never look tired or dated – in fact, she shares the same timelessness and charm as The Great Gatsby itself.

Phoenix 2 was completed by Lürssen in 2010, with Robert Moran overseeing the build and Winch Design undertaking the creative concept. Prior to Phoenix 2 , the owner had a previous Winch designed-Lürssen, and over the course of his ownership, he came to know Peter Lürssen well. “They became very good friends, which is something that’s typically hard to do with a client,” says Michael Breman, sales director at Lürssen. “So when he decided to build the boat, it was quite logical that he would come in to talk to Peter.”

But when it came to building his next boat, which would be his first new build, the client “didn’t really want a repeat of his current yacht, which was based on art deco Paris,” says Winch. Every major city in the world has its own take on art deco, explains Winch, and with Phoenix 2 , the brief was to capture the art deco spirit of New York. Why New York? “The client was inspired by the New York skyline and wanted to interpret that in the yacht. These buildings are symbolic of power and strength and the New York skyline was his inspiration” says Winch.

From the outside, Phoenix 2 captures that strength in her soaring lines, poised silhouette and a 5.7-metre phoenix figurehead that rises up from the bow like the eagles mounted on the Chrysler building. Phoenix 2 was the first modern yacht with a figurehead flying from the bow, as opposed to hugging the underside, and it adds to the yacht’s imposing stature.

On the interior, the yacht’s strength comes from her character; after all, it would be impossible to see a picture taken inside Phoenix 2 and mistake it for any other yacht. In the dining saloon, a six-panelled gold bas-relief structure, a bespoke piece by DKT Artworks, overlooks the dining table. Sitting opposite is a statue of a conductor and the backs of dining chairs are embroidered with different orchestra members, which marry up to the place settings at the dinner table.

“The owner adored music and had built friendships with some world-class concert pianists who were were invited as guests to come and play for him,” recalls Winch. It’s easy to imagine an extravagant soireé here, with the custom-designed Steinway being played and fine wines from the owner’s collection being ushered in from the adjacent Sommelier Room.

Design choices that might make other designers recoil have been embraced by Winch. Bordering the dining saloon are thick, dark curtains, reminiscent of a 1920s speakeasy, and black tones feature heavily throughout other areas of the yacht. “The thing is that wherever this boat is cruising in the summer, it's never going anywhere where it's not sunny,” Winch reminds me. “And you can go outside and have too much light and wear your sunglasses and hat to give you shade. So when you go inside, it's actually relaxing.”

And then there’s the sparkle. “To have a darker interior is not sombre; it's sparkling,” says Winch, and he’s right (again). By keeping darker elements in the interior, the light feels like a glittering, golden air that dances through the boat, illuminating bronze phoenixes on the overheads and making the yacht’s 100 metres of uniquely shaped, polished stainless steel handrails glisten.

But then there’s that subtlety again, reining things in. The yacht plays host to a Modigliani sculpture, an epic piece that some owners might like to display front and centre – but on Phoenix 2 , it’s hidden in the hallway that leads to the master suite. “Why put it in the hallway? Why put it somewhere private? Because it's even more of a drama,” laughs Winch.

The owner considered his guests’ reception to his yacht a lot when it came to the design, and nothing was more rigorously considered than custom details. During my tour, I stop and ask about where certain features were supplied from, and almost every time I’m met with a wry smile. “He didn’t want people to walk in and go ‘I see you've got a piece of a light from X, Y Z, shop’,” says Winch. “He wanted to be able to say: ‘It's the only one in the world.’” To this end, even the door handles and cutlery are unique, one-of-a-kind miniature art pieces.

Her show-stopping design even extends into the engine room. This space is usually a concealed area that guests and owners rarely visit – but on Phoenix 2 , this cavernous chamber packed with state-of-the-art technology is actually a sought-after stop-off on most tours around the boat.

Phoenix 2 is about to enjoy her first charter season with Edmiston , and Victoria Verhovskaia, the firm's charter fleet manager, predicts she will be a popular addition to the fleet. “July and August are fully booked in the western and eastern Med,” she says. “She will definitely have repeat clients.” Crowd-pleasing features include a 7.5-metre pool attached to a spa pool and bridge deck complete with a gym, hair-dressing salon-cum-massage room and a truly decadent hammam.

In the belly of the boat, there is a cinema. A foyer influenced by Radio City Music Hall in New York hides a machine that produces hot, buttery popcorn and the cinema room itself volunteers five double chaises finished in black ostrich with mink and cashmere throws. Fibre optics paint a starfield across the black carpet and a velvet curtain slides open to reveal the enormous cinema screen.

From the lower deck, a spiralled staircase and a glass-encased elevator serve all decks. The staircase is aluminium and finished in a riveted style that speaks to the second industrial revolution that prevailed in the 1920s. The bannisters follow a phoenix wing theme and the silhouette of a skyscraper is ingrained in the carpet, widening as the staircase ascends.

The skyscraper motif is repeated again in the backs of the barstools in the owner’s lounge, which sits on the upper deck. Here, there is an airier feeling thanks to a central skylight that lets light pour in. The lounge can be closed off for privacy or connected to the winter garden, a favoured spot on board according to Captain Ian Howcroft.

Here, retractable glass windows create a hybrid indoor-outdoor space that’s easily capable of hosting up to 120 guests – but when Phoenix 2 isn’t in party mode, it serves as a dining spot. A dining table is flanked by a pair of buffet-style tables and bordered by a small lounging area on the aft deck. “When the buffet tables were first installed, the owner told me to sit in the seat that he usually sat in,” says Howcroft. “He said, ‘now look out there,’ and I said, ‘I can’t, so we changed it!” Now, the buffet tables move up and down at the touch of a button.

The owner certainly knew what he wanted when designing Phoenix 2, and there is no more compelling evidence of this than the owner’s suite. It’s a visually striking space that’s accessed via a glass spiral staircase set against the backdrop of a busy mural depicting a scene of New York. An entire, unbroken black ring circles the bed, transitioning from the plush white carpet onto the marble of the en suite.

A cleverly concealed wardrobe allows the owner to hide away their belongings while the yacht is chartering, and a sliding mirror divides the bathroom into two perfect segments. Private areas are hidden behind large artworks, but I manage to pop my head in during the tour and find that the rumours about black toilet paper are indeed true.

The custom vanity table in the owner’s suite is Winch’s pride and joy. Sitting elegantly by the window, its milky pearlescent finish makes it look like it’s emitting its own light. “The vanity [looks like] it could have come out of Breakfast at Tiffany's ,” agrees Winch.

With her glittering interiors and Hollywood charisma , Phoenix 2 is a yacht that shines both literally and figuratively. It may be 12 years since she was delivered, but it's safe to say that sparkle isn't going anywhere and it was well worth the wait to peer behind the velvet curtain.

Phoenix 2 is listed for sale with Burgess and Cecil Wright , asking €124,950,000.

Delivered in 2010, the 90-meter luxury yacht Phoenix² has a distinctively elegant and streamlined profile. The Winch Design team, which was responsible for both exterior and interior, equipped her with more than 100 meters of polished stainless steel handrails. The imaginative use of fabrics and furniture, influenced by styles popular in 1930's New York, combines comfort, elegance and practicality in line with the owner’s tastes. A spectacular sky lounge opens out to an inside/outside dining area, complete with glass screens for dining with a view in different weather. Her sundeck includes a generous swimming pool with separate Jacuzzi and an exterior cinema.

Sea Eagle II: The inside story of the world’s largest aluminium sailing yacht

Yachting World

  • June 17, 2020

Rupert Holmes talks to the build and design teams behind the 81m Royal Huisman flagship Sea Eagle II, which recently completed her sea trials off the coast of the Netherlands

Royal Huisman has an enviable track record of producing superlative sailing superyachts , with hundreds of projects completed to date. Yet the latest vessel to leave the shipyard is extraordinary even by these standards. She is the world’s largest aluminium yacht and is one of the top ten biggest sailing yachts ever built.

Sea Eagle II is a magnificent 81m/266ft three-masted Panamax schooner, created by the same Dykstra and Mark Whiteley Design collaboration that produced the stunning 56m/186ft Royal Huisman ketch Aquarius just over a year ago.

Her very experienced owner has sailed all his life and spent a lot of time at sea. “ Sailing around the world in the weekends is a phrase often used to outline his days on board,” says Royal Huisman project manager Arjo Spans. He is also a repeat client – the original Sea Eagle is a 43m/143ft Frers/Rhoades Young design launched by the Dutch yard in 2015.

Initially the brief for the new boat was for a more classical yacht, similar to the 79m/259ft three-masted gaff schooner Athena , which Royal Huisman built for Silicon Valley mogul Jim Clark in 2004. However, the owner quickly realised he would prefer a more modern yacht: a fast-looking hull shape with straight lines, long waterline and plumb bow. The concept of Sea Eagle II was born.

“Having worked with him to build the original Sea Eagle , we understood the owner’s priorities from the start,” says Spans. “These are: low maintenance, functionality, and safety, including ease of moving around the yacht, even when heeled at sea.

“For each of the key aspects of the boat he asked for three proposals, he would then choose one of them and leave us to implement it,” Spans adds. “He put a huge amount of trust in the shipyard and in our craftsmanship.”

Royal Huisman reveals 116ft ‘floating resort’ catamaran superyacht concept

“This is not a change in direction; it is an expansion of possibilities,” says Jan Timmerman, CEO of the 136-year-old…

The scale of this yacht is nothing short of astounding. The sleek hull lines belie the 4m/13ft freeboard and the two-tier deckhouse, including a half-raised bridge, looks entirely in proportion. The main deck-level accommodation has a huge expanse of glass, with the 360º view interrupted only by minimal mullions. There are also acres of cockpit space, with room left over for a long sweep of uncluttered aft deck.

Mark Whiteley was responsible for developing the interior and refining the exterior styling. He created a simple and modern style for the interior, with straight lines. Lacquered Alpi walnut wall panels, brushed natural oak floors and dark stained wenge trims are complemented by light colour leather handrails and upholstered wall panels.

Part of the brief was for the yacht to be able to host business meetings – the forward part of the superstructure therefore includes a large saloon with expansive seating, plus a 16-seat table for formal dining.

A technical challenge

Dykstra Naval Architects drew a narrow and efficient hull shape with a maximum beam of only 12.4m/40ft, while displacement has been kept down to a relatively light 1,050 tonnes at full load. The final shape was achieved following extensive computational flow dynamics (CFD) calculations, velocity prediction programming (VPP), and testing in both tow tanks and wind tunnels. These all helped to determine sail balance, keel position and predicted rudder angles.

The plumb bow is balanced by a modest, but graceful, stern overhang, with a contemporary, relatively wide transom at deck level. Twin knuckle lines extend aft from near the bow, merging into one amidships and then forming a chine aft. Right aft the hull has negative curvature on the flare below the chine, which gives interesting reflections in the gleaming paintwork.

The lead naval architect, Dykstra’s Erik Wassen, told me he introduced the knuckle lines to give the hull “a bolder and more interesting shape.” The owner liked the concept and Mark Whiteley helped to refine the detail. Wassen describes the underwater shape as being: “a very modern round bilge shape, with a nice slender hull that gives good sailing capabilities.” Appendages are a conventional fin keel and balanced rudder.

Photo: Priska van der Meulen

The latter presented an interesting technical challenge, according to Wassen. Initially they looked at fabricating the rudder stock in steel, but that alone would weigh three tonnes. Screening a number of alternatives led to a decision to use carbon for the stock, with a foam core section clad in a relatively thin composite skin for the blade.

The result is what it’s producer, Royal Huisman’s sister company Rondal, believes to be the biggest ever carbon rudder, weighing only 1,250kg, which helps to keep weight out of the ends of the boat. The weight saving here also enabled the intended fore and aft trim to be achieved with the ballast in its optimal location.

The rudder includes load sensors to record and verify torque, side forces and bending moment while sailing. “There is not much load data available for rudders of this size of sailing yacht, so it’s very conservatively engineered,” says Spans. Fibre-optic sensors are incorporated to enable a database to be created that will help with designing future composite rudders for very large yachts.

Due to the distance of the helm stations from the rudder, the steering is via an electric-hydraulic system, which means there’s no feedback from the helm. The plan is to investigate whether data from the sensors can be used in a feedback system to give a more natural feel to steering the boat under sail.

Structural engineering

This is one of the most interesting elements of yacht design, yet is all too often under appreciated. Extensive modelling showed a couple of unexpected problems that needed clever solutions during Sea Eagle II ’s design and engineering.

Instead of the hull flexing smoothly under load, like an I-beam, the presence of a forward intermediate deck introduced hard spots in this area, resulting in stress concentrations at the forward end of the superstructure. This required a lot of design work to create a smooth transition of stress from the lower deck to the intermediate one and then on to the upper deck.

worlds-largest-aluminium-sailing-yacht-81m-royal-huisman-sea-eagle-II-cad

Structural engineering was extensively modelled for Sea Eagle II

The roof of the superstructure also posed a challenge, in that the inside surface of a beam needs to become shorter as it flexes. But the original plan for the aluminium roof wasn’t able to accommodate this, with the result the modelling showed stresses concentrating in the corners of the mullions and in the glass itself.

The solution was to avoid welding the top of the mullions to the roof, opting instead for a flexible joint that allows for movement when necessary. Wassen likens it to the joints in large buildings that need to be included to allow for thermal expansion and contraction.

Whiteley also helped to refine the exterior styling. In addition to the detail of the knuckles, his input helped to refine the shapes – particularly curves and softening corners – in the superstructure.

Panamax rig

The requirement to be able to clear the Bridge of the Americas at the Pacific end of the Panama canal called for the schooner rig with three equal masts. All are of carbon and are made by Rondal, with integrated sail handling systems and Carbo-Link carbon standing rigging.

Each mast has in-boom furling, while the aft two have staysails for use when reaching. The tank and wind tunnel testing was used to verify different headsail options, particularly to determine the differences between a large blade jib versus a large staysail or yankee.

“Obviously you have better windward performance with a large blade,” says Wassen, “but as soon as you bear away the yankee is much more forgiving in trimming, so we decided that made more sense.” A further advantage is that when the yankee is part furled the sheeting point remains the same.

Rondal’s Integrated Sailing System consists of the three carbon Panamax masts with furling booms, hydraulic boomvangs, headsail furling systems, deck winches and equipment, captive winches and continuous solid carbon standing rigging by Carbo-Link, all equipped with load sensing capabilities. Photo: Rondal

In addition, a blade jib requires much higher sheet loads to maintain leech tension. Even though Sea Eagle II is a three-masted yacht, the yankee sheet loads are still predicted to reach 18 tonnes – but this still allows standard-size captive winches to be used, rather than larger custom-made units.

The Panamax limitation obviously poses the question as to whether sail area needed to be compromised to fulfil this criteria. However, this is clearly not the case for Sea Eagle II . Hull speed is close to 20 knots and the yacht is clearly capable of surfing at much higher speeds, despite being designed as a pure cruiser. This role, of course, suggests keeping heel angles to a maximum of 10-15°.

Nevertheless, the VPP figures suggest potential boat speeds of 17-18 knots in 16 knots of true breeze with a true wind angle of 70°. “As soon as you can ease the sheets a little bit, we have a lot of sail area,” says Wassen, “so on a beam reach, I wouldn’t be surprised if a steady 20 knots is possible.”

  • All passenger cabins as amenities offer twin beds (singles convertible to king, or double upon request), leather headboard, bedside tables and wall lamps, pillow menu, flat HD TV (with an interactive TV system, allowing bookings from the cabin, also itinerary/ports of call and tours/excursions information, movies on demand, live webcam views), direct-dial phone (onboard connections only), safe, hairdryer, mini-bar/fridge, closet/wardrobe, sitting/lounge area (mirrored vanity table, chairs), en-suite bathroom (WC, sink, shower), individual air-conditioning (thermostat controlled), Wi-Fi Internet access.
  • All MSC YACHT CLUB cabins additionally have Nespresso machines.

  • Interconnecting “cluster cabins” are specifically designed for large families and family group travel. This new concept allows up to 3 cruise staterooms to be linked together and opened up. Meraviglia ship’s family cabins are in 3 main categories – FAMILY (max occupancy 6 passengers, 2 connecting rooms, 2 baths, 1 balcony), SUPER FAMILY (max occupancy 6 passengers, 2 connecting rooms, 2 baths /1 with bathtub, 2 balconies) and SUPER FAMILY PLUS (max occupancy 10 passengers, 3 connecting rooms, 3 baths, 2 balconies).

  • The MSC’s new category “Super Family Plus” cabins are category B1-Balcony staterooms (location on decks 9, 10, 11). Facing forward, they interconnect with an interior room and another B1-Balcony (forward location too) making a “Super Family Plus”. Some of the aft-location B2-Balcony staterooms (location – decks 9 through 14) have an extra single bed and can be connected to make a “Super Family Plus”. When a balcony room is combined with an adjoining interior cabin it becomes a “Superfamily”.
  • Passengers booked in MSC Wellness cabins (IW-Inside, OW-Oceanview, BW-Balcony, and YCW-Yacht Club) receive access to dedicated sports facilities, training equipment, and amenities, along with the personal trainer, personalized fitness program, exclusive fitness-themed excursions, healthy food/drinks, charge-free laundry service (gym wear only).

Note: On decks 13 and 14, balcony cabins coloured in pink are the line’s new “wellness” class. In the same class are also the interior staterooms on deck 13, plus 4 outside staterooms on deck 8.

Oyster 565 Sailing Yacht Design and Layout

Oyster 565 Layout Design Configuration

The latest yacht in our G6 fleet, the sailing yacht design of the Oyster 565 is configurable to her owner’s needs and preferences. She has been designed for shorthanded family and couples sailing with safety and comfort in mind and is the perfect size to sail comfortably without professional crew.

This Oyster 565 is borne from 43 years of experience building over 120 Oyster 56 and Oyster 575 blue water sailing yachts. From long-distance liveaboard sailing to coastal family cruising, the Oyster 565 makes it all possible. What’s more, with contemporary interiors that can be modified to suit you, you’ll have your pick of joinery, leathers and fabrics to become your on-the-water home. Discover her possible configurations below.

OYSTER 565 EXTERIOR

We understand our owners’ visions to create to perfect yacht. That’s why the Oyster 565 can be built with a variety of different rig configurations and two possible deck plans.

A standard Oyster 565 sail plan for short-handed sailing includes in-mast furling and 105% blade headsail, allowing for easy manoeuvring and sail-handling wherever you are in the world, from relaxed cruising to a global circumnavigation, such as in the  Oyster World Rally .

There is also the option to configure the yacht with a ‘sports pack’ for performance cruising, optimising your Oyster 565 for fast long-distance cruising or sailing events such as the Oyster Regatta.

Keel Options

The Oyster 565’s twin rudder hull form can be combined with a supershoal centreboard for safe shallow-water sailing.

There is an also option for an extended transom which provides large and open aft-deck space for entertaining. This also creates greater storage space ideal for long-distance blue water sailing.

The sailing yacht design of the Oyster 565 can also be customised with a large hydraulic bathing platform, providing quick and easy access to the water when the yacht is at anchor.

OYSTER 565 INTERIOR

The Oyster 565 is available with two personalized layouts designed to suit your preferences tailored to your needs. Browse our typical sailing yacht design layouts below.

Layout 1 - Master Cabin Aft

Our traditional layout positions the master cabin aft, with the two guest cabins forward and a utility cabin which can be lengthened to include an additional berth.

In addition to the midship Seascape windows, which come as standard on all of our G6 range, you can choose to add Seascape windows into the master cabin.

Layout 2 - Master Cabin Forward

The Oyster 565 can be configured with the master cabin forward - a first in Oyster’s yacht design history. This format means the aft section can either stay as one large cabin or be adapted into two double cabins, depending on the number of guests you envisage to have on board with you.

Yacht Charter Costs Explained

Credit card

A comprehensive breakdown of your charter costs and fees.

When you begin planning a luxury yacht charter it is important to be aware of what is included in the cost of booking your dream charter yacht. although a yacht will have a base charter fee, this may or may not include additional expenses such as food and fuel and this is subject to the terms and conditions within the charter contract. there are various types of charter contracts and which one applies to you will depend on where you wish to cruise., high season.

High season refers to the most popular weeks of the year for yacht charter, whether it’s the winter period in the Caribbean or the height of summer in the Mediterranean , booking in high season requires early planning, determination and a big budget. In addition, planning a yacht charter to coincide with a major event will also be reflected in the price with marine spots for elite events often booking up early. Allow plenty of time when making enquiries to ensure a star studded, well prepared arrival.

Low season typically refers to any time outside of the high season periods. Groups of families and friends looking for a relaxing luxury vacation are advised to avoid high season weeks and opt for weeks outside of this time. The busiest periods are of course reflected in the charter costs and can be up to 15 to 30 percent more expensive than typical low season periods. Chartering a few weeks either side of these busy periods can be almost exactly the same, with the weather almost unchanged in some places, with far less crowds.

Take to our detailed destination guides and browse the yachts available in your chosen destination. Some of the most successful superyachts in the industry can be reserved up to a year in advance and as most yacht brokers will warn away from last minute bookings, it is better to book early and have the pick of the bunch rather than miss out at the last moment. Browse the Events section for details on upcoming festivals and sporting events or visit our Finding a Yacht Broker page to begin your planning your luxury yacht charter.

This article will go into detail of the costs to be expected when planning and booking a yacht charter. From the base charter fee of a yacht, what is covered within the fee and how it may vary in addition to details of contracts and how an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) can be used to manage any expenses.

Base Charter Fee

The base charter fee in essence refers to the hire cost of the yacht itself, with all equipment in working order in addition to the cost of food and wages for the crew during the entirety of the charter. This is essentially all the base charter fee covers with additional expenses often applicable on top. The base charter fee will vary from one yacht to another and this may be down to any number of reasons from size and on board amenities to the charter season. For instance, the base rate of a charter yacht may increase in "high season" and reduce during the "low season". "High season" and "low season" refers to the busiest and slowest periods for yacht charters though this may appear misleading, as these peak times refer to periods of weeks as opposed to full seasons. In addition, you may find that a yacht is also more expensive during special events such as the Monaco Grand Prix, Cannes Film Festival and America's Cup. Unless you are keen to charter a yacht for a particular "high season" event, choose your dates carefully as although a "high season" rate will be more expensive than the "low season" the two can sometimes share much of the same weather conditions.

Aside from seasons and events, yachts of the same size may also differ in price and this may be down to a vast difference in on board amenities. A yacht which boasts an on board cinema or lavish water toys may have a higher base rate compared with a yacht of minimal amenities of the same size. If it is unclear as to why two yachts of the same size are vastly different in price, ask your yacht broker to explain what the differences are. Once you are clear on what the base price is and why, it is important to discover what costs will be applicable on top and this is dependent on the type of charter contract used.

The type of charter contract applicable to your charter will depend on where in the world you are cruising, as there are various terms within the industry which dictate how the payment structure is determined. For instance, a MYBA (Worldwide Yachting Association, formerly known as Mediterranean Yacht Brokers Association) contract operates under Western Mediterranean Terms (WMT) and is arguably the most commonly used, particularly with large yachts embarking on a Mediterranean yacht charter. This contract is often referred to as a "plus all expenses" contract and requires that the charterer pay for fuel, food, beverages and dockage fees as an additional expense outside of the base charter fee. Typically, guests can accumulate an additional 25% to 50% of the base charter fee though this is dependent on what is consumed. These expenses can be tracked through the use of an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) which we will cover in the next section.

Alternatively, smaller yachts on a Caribbean yacht charter can expect a "mostly all-inclusive" contract known as Caribbean Terms Inclusive (CTI) sometimes referred to as Standard Caribbean Terms (SCT). The Standard Caribbean Terms greatly differ from Western Mediterranean Terms, as the Caribbean terms include three meals a day in addition to four hours cruising per day which is included in the base charter fee.

In addition to the commonly used MYBA terms and Standard Caribbean Terms, there are also less frequently used terms such as Standard Eastern Mediterranean Terms (SEMT) and Greek Terms (GI). Read our guide on Understanding Charter Contracts for more information and if you are unsure as to what is included under the terms of your contract, be sure to ask your broker.

Advance Provisioning Allowance (commonly referred to as APA)

Irrespective of the charter contract it is important for guests to be aware of the Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA). The APA was designed to enable charterers to manage their expenses through a clear and trackable arrangement. An APA is a way to deposit the estimated expense amount of your charter to cover costs such as fuel, food and dockage fees. Typically, the APA accrues to approximately 25% to 30% of the base charter fee, though this does of course depend on the charter parties tastes and requirements and could be far less or far greater than this estimation. For instance, charter guests who intend to regularly dine on caviar and vintage wine can expect to pay more, whereas guests on board a sailing yacht charter can expect to save on fuel costs. Charterers can request an estimated APA amount from the yacht broker based on their on board expectations.

The APA is to be paid approximately one month prior to boarding the charter yacht and is paid directly to the Captain of the yacht. Once the APA has been paid to the captain it will then be retained as a bank account of sorts, from which the captain can make expenditures whilst keeping a record of what has been spent. At any point during the yacht charter guests can request a rundown of accounts from the captain as a way of keeping track of expenditures. The captain will request that any additional funds are paid during the charter should guests exceed the APA. It is therefore a good idea to keep an additional account with your yacht broker on shore, as should the APA become critically low at any time the yacht broker can release additional funds to the captain on the charterers command. Cash can be used if necessary though an on shore account may be deemed as hassle free to some.

It is important to remember that food and fuel for example, are charged at cost without mark up to the charterer and upon disembarking, transactions can be reviewed by the "head" charterer and Captain with any remaining funds to be paid back to the charterer.

Fuel and Dockage Fees

It is important to remember that whilst considering fuel costs, the fuel consumed when using jet-skis and tenders will also apply to the charterer. In addition, whilst docked at a marina the generators used in order to produce electricity will also use fuel. The distance travelled and speed of cruising also affects fuel costs and it is important to bear these factors in mind. Dockage fees may vary from very little to large sums and this is dependent again upon the location and whether you wish to dock during a special event such as the Monaco Grand Prix.

Although insurance costs are not directly connected to the charter costs as such, it is useful to bear in mind should you with to take out Charterers Liability Insurance or Cancellation and Curtailment cover. You can read more information regarding insurance in our How to Book and Plan a Yacht Charter article.

Value Added Tax (VAT)

European Union (EU) tax laws state VAT will apply should you disembark within their waters, for example Italian territorial waters. This may also apply to some Caribbean islands. Commercially registered vessels are usually VAT exempt though vessels which are not commercially registered will be liable for VAT for all charters within the EU.

No request is too large or detail too small on a yacht charter though it is wise to keep in mind the shipping costs should you request an expensive bottle of champagne to be transported to you whilst you are residing in a secluded bay of the Caribbean. It is important to understand the entire payment structure to ensure no unpleasant surprises arise and it is often prudent to keep an escrow account with your broker on shore in order to control charter costs without having to carry cash on board.
