The brother of the Morgan Stanley chairman missing after a superyacht sunk off the coast of Italy has shared his hopes that air pockets might be keeping them alive.

Jeremy Bloomer, the twin brother of Jonathan, said: “It’s a slow process and it will take time. So there might be air pockets, but we don’t know. It’s still wait and see, so fingers crossed.”

The race to rescue any survivors from inside the sunken Bayesian superyacht is set to enter a crucial stage, with divers succeeding in smashing through a glass window to enter the hull.

Six people remain missing after the boat sank in a severe storm in the early hours of Monday , including British billionaire Mike Lynch and his daughter Hannah, Mr Bloomer ; his wife, Judy Bloomer; Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo; and his wife, Neda Morvillo.

Divers from the Sicilian fire services were able to reach the common areas of the vessel, Giornale Di Sicilia reported yesterday – but they are yet to make it to the cabins.

One man has so far been confirmed dead, Recaldo Thomas, while a further 15 people survived the incident.

How billionaire’s superyacht trip to celebrate end of 13 year legal battle ended in tragedy

It was supposed to be a summer celebration.

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch had gathered his tried and trusted lawyers who had been with him every step of the way helping him emerge unscathed from a gruelling 13-year legal battle. Twelve guests had flown into the picturesque Italian port of Porticello, near Palermo from the UK , the US, Canada , New Zealand and Ireland , to mark the end of the fraud trial that had consumed much of their lives.

But now one person is dead and six more , including Mr Lynch, are missing with hopes fading for a successful rescue after the vessel capsized in during bad weather in the early hours of Monday morning.

Doctor says survivors spoke of ‘darkness’ as yacht sank

A doctor who treated the 15 survivors of the Bayesian superyacht in the immediate aftermath of its sinking said that the injured spoke of “darkness” as the boat capsized.

Dr Fabio Genco described “apocalyptic scenes” as rescued guests and crew searched for their loved ones, while his main concern was treating the baby incase she had ingested saltwater.

“The word that the mother and all the injured kept repeating was the ‘darkness’ during the shipwreck,” he said.

“They spoke of about five minutes, from three to five minutes, from the moment the boat was lifted, raised by the waves of the sea until it sank.”

Brother of missing banker hopes for ‘air pockets’ to keep those onboard alive

The brother of the Morgan Stanley chairman missing after a superyacht sank off Sicily has said he hopes air pockets could be keeping those alive.

Speaking to the BBC, Jeremy Bloomer, the twin brother of Jonathan, said his fingers were crossed.

He said: “It’s a slow process and it will take time. So there might be air pockets, but we don’t know. It’s still wait and see, so fingers crossed.”

Everything we know so far about the search for Mike Lynch and the Bayesian superyacht sinking in Sicily

The search for British billionaire Mike Lynch and his daughter has entered a crucial stage after the businessman’s yacht sank following a tornado off the coast of the Sicilian capital Palermo .

The 50-metre luxury boat, named Bayesian, had 22 people on board when it sank in the early hours of Monday, with four Britons among the six missing , according to local media.

The Independent explains everything we know so far:

Mike Lynch’s wife ‘in distressed state' as she awaits updates on missing billionaire and husband

The wife of British billionaire Mike Lynch has sought refuge with other survivors in a hotel, which is just a six-minute drive from Porticello harbour, near to where the boat sank.

A hotel guest told The Mirror that the mother is in a very distressed state as she waits for updates on whether her husband and daughter Hannah, 18, are alive.

Angela Bacares made it to safety along with 15 other passengers after a violent storm truck just after 4am on Monday, consuming her sailing yacht Bayesian amidst a tower of tornado-waterspouts.

The 57-year-old described how she was woken early that morning after the boat “tilted” sharply, and after initially thinking nothing was wrong found herself showered in broken glass, according to Italy’s La Republica.

She then fled from her cabin – slicing her feet on the broken glass scattered across the deck – and safely made it off the boat as it vanished beneath the waves within minutes.

Friend describes Mike Lynch as ‘easy person to talk to’ with ‘nice sense of humour'

A friend of Mike Lynch has described him as a “very easy person to talk to”, with a “nice sense of humour”.

Richard Smith, who lives near Mr Lynch in the Suffolk village of Pettistree, told the BBC: “He is so approachable and a very easy person to talk to. A nice sense of humour. You might think with all that money that he would be a difficult person to talk to, but in fact he was a very easy person to talk to.”

Italian divers say salvage operation ‘long and complex'

Italian authorities have released drone footage of their “long and complex” operation trying to enter the sunken wreck of the Bayesian superyacht.

As friends hoped the remaining six missing guests found air pockets on the sunken vessel and had managed to survive for more than 50 hours Vincenzo Zagarola of the Italian Coastguard said they were feared dead.

Asked about the likelihood of them being alive, he said: “Never say never, but reasonably the answer should be not.”

“We think they are still inside the boat, that is our very hard idea.

“Of course, we do not exclude that they are not inside the boat, but we know the boat sank quickly.

“We suppose that the six people missing may not have had time to get out of the boat.”

The Sicilian superyacht disaster proves one thing – that where once we did collective sympathy so well, human tragedy now seems to bring out the worst in us, says Claire Cohen

Friend of Mick Lynch hoping for a miracle

David Tabizel, who co-founded software company Autonomy with Mike Lynch in 1996, has told Sky News: “I hope there’s a miracle about to occur.”

The Italian Coastguard has not ruled out the possibility that those missing, including technology tycoon Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, may still be alive, with experts speculating air pockets could have formed as the yacht sank.

Among those missing are also Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer; his wife, Judy Bloomer; Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo; and his wife, Neda Morvillo.

Jeremy Bloomer, Jonathan Bloomer’s twin brother, told the BBC: “It’s a slow process and it will take time. So there might be air pockets, but we don’t know. It’s still wait and see, so fingers crossed”.

The frantic rescue operation continued overnight with divers trying to access the £14 million vessel, which is thought to be largely intact on the seabed.

Here's what to know about Mike Lynch, the tech tycoon missing in the Sicily yacht disaster

By Aimee Picchi

Edited By Anne Marie Lee

Updated on: August 20, 2024 / 7:51 PM EDT / CBS News

Mike Lynch, once hailed as "Britain's Bill Gates," is now among the six people missing after his luxury yacht sank in a violent storm off the coast of Sicily. At the time of the disaster, Lynch had been trying to shake more than a decade of legal entanglements that ended in June when he was cleared of fraud and conspiracy charges .

Lynch, 59, rose to prominence in the late 1990s with the development of his software company, Autonomy, which helped businesses quickly find information buried in email and other digital documents. In 2011, Lynch sold the business to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion, giving him a $800 million payday and cementing him as one of the U.K.'s richest people.

But the acquisition was later called one of the "most notorious failed mergers and acquisitions" after HP discovered alleged accounting issues, leading to Lynch's firing by HP's then-CEO, Meg Whitman. HP claimed that Autonomy had used accounting improprieties to bolster its underlying financials ahead of the acquisition, charges that Lynch steadfastly denied.

The case stretched into a 12-year legal fight that ended in June 2024 when a federal court jury in San Francisco delivered not-guilty verdicts.

"I am looking forward to returning to the U.K. and getting back to what I love most — my family and innovating in my field," Lynch said in a statement after the verdict.

Here's what to know about Lynch.

What company did Mike Lynch start?

Lynch, who earned a PhD in mathematical computing from the U.K.'s Cambridge University, first cofounded a company called Cambridge Neurodynamics, based on the cofounders' work with pattern recognition. The firm used the tech to match fingerprints and car license plates, according to a 1997 article in The Guardian.

From there, Lynch cofounded Autonomy in 1996, which relied on a statistical model called Bayesian inference, named after a theorem developed by the 18th century statistician Thomas Bayes. (Lynch's luxury yacht was christened the "Bayesian.")

The company tapped into the growing need of businesses to sort through and find information within the vast reams of data created by the increasing use of computers and digital documents.

Autonomy's steady growth during its first decade resulted in Lynch being awarded one of the U.K's highest honors, the Office of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in 2006.

Lynch told The Guardian in 1997 that people didn't quite believe that a growing tech business could emerge from the U.K.

"I have actually heard the comment, 'England, software? I thought you made bone china,'" he told the newspaper.

What happened after Autonomy's acquisition by HP?

At first, HP celebrated the purchase as a huge coup that would propel the Palo Alto, California, company down a promising new path, but then quickly came to regret it under then-CEO Meg Whitman.

HP claimed it found accounting irregularities, and the company ended up recognizing $8.8 billion in losses in the Autonomy deal. Whitman eventually fired Lynch in 2012, while also laying off thousands of workers as HP's fortunes sagged.

Throughout the past 12 years, Lynch rejected the allegations. He told the Wall Street Journal in 2012 that he was "ambushed" by the claims, which he described as "completely and utterly wrong."

What happened with Mike Lynch's legal case?

Lynch maintained his innocence while testifying earlier this year before a jury during a 2 1/2 month trial in San Francisco. U.S. Justice Department prosecutors called more than 30 witnesses in an attempt to prove allegations that Lynch engaged in accounting duplicity that bilked billions of dollars from HP.

The jury, as noted above, delivered not-guilty verdicts in June, vindicating Lynch, who pledged to return to the U.K. and to find new ways to innovate.

Who is Mike Lynch's wife?

Mike Lynch is married to Angela Bacares, who is one of the people rescued from the Mediterranean after the yacht sank. Lynch and Barares have two daughters. One of them, Hannah, 18, is among the missing, according to the BBC.

Bacares, 57, owns shares in Darktrace, a British cybersecurity company she and Lynch co-founded, the Sun noted . She sat in the front row of the courtroom during her husband's trial, but generally has preferred to stay out of the public eye, the Times of London reported in July.

"We made the decision that Angela would not be involved in the case. She stayed completely separate. Her focus was the family and children," Lynch told the Times last month.

Mike Lynch: British entrepreneur missing after Bayesian yacht sinks off Sicilian coast

British tech billionaire Mike Lynch is missing off Sicily's coast after a yacht sank.

One person is dead and six others are missing after a UK-flagged superyacht named Bayesian sank off the coast of Sicily in a storm .

Follow live: Superyacht sinks latest

Local media reports that Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter is among those missing - while his wife Angela Bacares is confirmed to be among the 15 people who were rescued.

Sky News also understands the yacht - which is believed to have been named after a mathematical equation - is owned by the family of Mr Lynch.

A recently freed man

It comes just weeks after Mr Lynch, 59, was in June cleared of all charges by a US jury in the high-profile fraud case related to the sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard (HP) in 2011.

Read more: Lynch's co-defendant dies after being hit by car days before yacht sinking We can learn from Lynch's extradition and unsuccessful prosecution

He had been accused of conspiracy and attempted fraud over the £8.3bn sale to HP - a deal that had been subject to costly legal action since. For more than a year he remained under house arrest while awaiting trial and spent a night in custody.

Politicians and business leaders alike protested vehemently at his extradition to the US to face charges arguing that, if there was a case to be heard, it should be heard in the UK as Autonomy was a UK-listed, UK-regulated and UK-audited company.

who owns superyacht ziggy

It was the biggest tech takeover of a FTSE 100 firm at the time - but HP wrote down £5.5bn of Autonomy's value within a year, claiming revenue streams were inflated.

A mathematician who specialised in probability, he would have been aware of the odds being stacked against him in the US trial. The vast majority of defendants agree to plead guilty to a lesser sentence.

Analysis by the Pew Research Centre thinktank suggested that, in 2022, just 0.4% of defendants in US federal criminal cases went to trial and were acquitted. Had he been convicted, he could have faced 20 years in jail.

Danny Fortson, US West Coast correspondent for The Sunday Times, who interviewed Mr Lynch just over a month ago told Sky News that after being found not guilty, the tycoon said he had been given a "second life".

who owns superyacht ziggy

"When I met him... the thing that struck me was he was in a state of shock," Mr Fortson said. "He was fighting fraud charges that threatened to put him in jail for the rest of his life for more than a decade, and he won against all the odds.

"He kept saying: 'I have a second life, I have a new lease of life' and 'I have won my freedom, and now I have got to figure out what to do with the rest of my life'.

"He was in a state of shock and real gratitude that he had put this huge case that had hung over his head behind him."

who owns superyacht ziggy

During his house arrest, My Lynch only had the company of a sheepdog called Faucet, who, Mr Fortson said, was almost "surgically attached" to the mathematician as they spent 24 hours a day together for more than a year.

"The dog was very protective of him and he obviously loved the dog very much," Mr Fortson said.

While he won the US case Mr Lynch did lose a multi-billion pound fraud action brought to the High Court by HP.

It found that HP had "substantially" succeeded in its civil case but indicated that the firm would get considerably less than the $5bn (£3.7bn) it had sought in damages.

Who is Mike Lynch?

The Serious Fraud Office looked into the acquisition but in 2015 dropped its investigation .

As a serial entrepreneur, Ilford-born Mr Lynch has been described as the British Bill Gates and the UK's first tech billionaire.

Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player

Mike Lynch became Britain's first tech billionaire when Autonomy, the software company he founded, floated on the stock market 16 years ago.

His firefighter father was from County Cork and his mother was a nurse from County Tipperary in Ireland.

In 2023, The Sunday Times rich list valued him and his wife at £852m.

Ms Bacares is confirmed as being among the rescued.

He co-founded cyber-security business Darktrace, another former FTSE 100 company. But his connections to the company, at a time when he was facing serious charges, depressed its share price and made it vulnerable to a US private equity company takeover, Mr Lynch said.

Who is missing?

Mike Lynch, an Irish-born software millionaire who founded tech company Autonomy in 1996, is one of four British passengers missing from the yacht.

His 18-year-old daughter Hannah, who recently completed her A-levels, is also missing, along with Mr Bloomer and his wife Judy.

Mr Bloomer was also previously chairman of the audit committee for Autonomy and testified for the defence in the high-profile court case over the company’s sale, which ended in June with Mr Lynch being found not guilty of fraud.

Authorities say they are also searching for Chris Morvillo, a lawyer at the new York legal firm Clifford Chance, and his wife.

Mr Morvillo represented Mr Lynch in the Autonomy case and celebrated the result in a social media post two months ago. He was also involved in the criminal investigation that resulted from the 9/11 terror attacks in 2001.

So far, one body – thought to be the yacht’s chef – has been recovered, according to the Palermo Coastguard.

Though it hasn’t been confirmed officially, a spokesperson for the Canadian foreign ministry told the BBC they were ‘aware of reports that a Canadian citizen has died’.

Who has been rescued?

Three crew members of the Bayesian have been named to be among those who were rescued.

Leah Randall, from South Africa, was photographed leaving the coastguard headquarters yesterday, alongside Katja Chicken, her fellow crew member.

Leo Eppel was also later named as the third surviving crew member.

British national Charlotte Golunski was rescued after the Bayesian sank.

She told Italian newspaper la Repubblica she held her one-year-old daughter Sofia above the waves to stop her from drowning.

Ms Golunski said: ‘I held her afloat with all my strength, my arms stretched upwards to keep her from drowning. It was all dark.

‘In the water I couldn’t keep my eyes open. I screamed for help but all I could hear around me was the screams of others.’

Charlotte’s husband James Emslie was also pulled from the sea, with all three now being treated in hospital.

Ayla Ronald, a lawyer working for Clifford Chance, was also rescued after the yacht sank, along with Irish national Sasha Murray and Mike Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares.

She is said to be anxiously awaiting news of her husband and daughter.

Myin Htun Kyaw, a 39-year-old with a Burmese passport, was also among those rescued by the coast guard.

Yacht captain Matthew Griffith, who is a French citizen, has also been accounted for along with 51-year-old James Calfield.

Matthew Fletcher is another British national said to have been rescued, according to local media.

The Dutch foreign ministry said a Dutch man on board was rescued and not in a life-threatening condition.

Salvo Cocina of Sicily’s civil protection agency said the yacht’s passengers and crew were from many different countries including the United Kingdom, United States , Antigua, France, Germany, Ireland , Myanmar, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Spain .

The massive yacht measured at 55.9m long and is 11.51m at its beam (widest point), a draught (depth of the vessel below the waterline) of 9.73m and an internal volume of 473 GT (gross tonnage).

The Bayesian superyacht tragedy has claimed the life of one person while six others are feared dead - including British tech tycoon owner Mike Lynch.

The £30million superyacht was struck by a terrifying waterspout at around 5am, with the ship's captain emotionally claiming 'we didn't see it coming' from his hospital bed.

All 15 who survived the disaster have been named and some were able to escape in a liferaft from the luxury yacht that inflated as the doomed vessel rapidly sunk 50 metres to the seabed.

Dive teams today are searching for missing six but only have 12 minute windows in which to scour the wreck.

While engineer Nick Sloane, who led the salvage operation for the Costa Concordia disaster, warned the next 24 hours would be critical and gave faint hope that survivors may be trapped in 'air pockets' on board.

Here is what we know about the 22 passengers on board the Bayesian.

Mike Lynch

The British tech tycoon, 59, had recently beaten the odds after he was acquitted in one of the biggest ever fraud trials.

He had invited guests from legal firm Clifford Chance as well as his own company Invoke Capital to celebrate him being acquitted in June, vindicating the entrepreneur after a 13-year legal battle over the £8.6billion sale of his firm, Autonomy, to Hewlett-Packard in 2011.

Dubbed 'Britain's Bill Gates ', worth an estimated £852million, and if found guilty, it could have landed him 25 years in a US jail.

The entrepreneur - who also owns a home in Chelsea - had spoken of his 'indescribable' relief at being acquitted and joy at returning to Britain, and texted one friend saying it was 'so wonderful to be home'.

He has also spoken at his delight at being able to spend time with his two daughters, 21 and 18, and their six dogs.

The nerdy multi-millionaire entrepreneur named his superyacht after the 'Bayesian' statistical theory on which he built his software fame and fortune.

Lynch had been looking forward not only to getting back to running his businesses and the farm where he raises rare breed pigs and cattle, but to adding his voice to the growing fury over the wildly uneven extradition arrangements between the US and the UK.

Hannah Lynch

Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, a former pupil at Latymer Upper School in West London , who received her A-Level results last week and was offered a place at Oxford.

She had been a star student at the competitive secondary school where fees are £25,000 per year,.

She had won a number of prestigious school from 2017 until 2024 including outstanding academic achievement while in lower sixth form and the William C Smith award for poetry.

The school for 7-18 year olds said in a statement: 'We are all incredibly shocked by the news that Hannah and her father are among those missing in this tragic incident and our thoughts are with their family and everyone involved as we await further updates.'

Chris and Neda Morvillo

Wealthy American couple Mr and Mrs Morvillo have not been seen since the Bayesian foundered off Palermo Monday morning after being caught in bad weather.

Mr Morvillo, 59, worked as a lawyer for Mr Lynch, who had chartered the vessel to celebrate a recent legal victory.

He is a partner at the prestigious Clifford Chance law firm, which has offices around the world.

Jonathan and Judy Bloomer

Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy are still missing.

Mr Bloomer, a close friend of Lynch, was also confirmed missing by Italian Authorities.

According to his Linkedin profile, Mr Bloomer is the chairman of insurance provider Hiscox and was formerly the chief executive of Prudential before being ousted in a boardroom coup in 2005.

'Our thoughts are with all those affected, in particular our Chair, Jonathan Bloomer, and his wife Judy, who are among the missing,' Aki Hussain, Group CEO of Hiscox, which Bloomer also chaired, said in a statement.

'Our thoughts are with Judy and Jonathan's family, as well as all those who are still waiting for news after this tragic event.'

Angela Bacares

The 57-year-old wife of tech tycoon Lynch is now reportedly recovering from her injuries in a wheelchair.

She revealed that the first sign of the freak waterspout that sunk the luxury sailboat Bayesian just before 5am this morning was a 'slight tilt' that woke her up.

Mr Lynch's wife told La Repubblica that she and her husband woke up at 4am when the boat suddenly 'tilted'.

Mrs Bacares said that they were not worried at the time, but that she still got up to see what was happening, until glass shattered and created confusion on board.

She sustained abrasions on her feet - likely after walking on glass shards during the sinking - which have left her unable to walk and sitting in a wheelchair, La Repubblica reports, while she also has bandages on others part of her body.

Charlotte Golunski, James Emsilie and their baby daughter Sofia

Among the 15 who survived include a one-year-old British baby called Sofia, who was kept afloat by her mother, 36-year-old Charlotte Golunski.

Charlotte Golunski, 36, (pictured) her husband and her one-year-old baby also survived

Mrs Golunski, an Oxford graduate and senior associate at Invoke, also survived after fighting to prevent her child from drowning.

She is listed as working for Mr Lynch's company Invoke Capital on Linkedin, and described how she momentarily lost her daughter in the 'fury of the waves', before finding her and managing to get them both to safety.

The mother told Italian newspaper Republicca: 'I held her afloat with all my strength, my arms stretched upwards to keep her from drowning.

'It was all dark. In the water I couldn't keep my eyes open. I screamed for help but all I could hear around me was the screams of others.'

Mrs Golunski's British husband James Emsilie, 36, also survived the tragedy.

They are all English and are in the Children's Hospital.

Dr Domenico Cipolla, director of the emergency department at Di Cristina Children's Hospital, said Ms Golunski had told him more details about the sinking of the yacht.

He told RAI news: 'The mother said while she was sleeping with her daughter, they found themselves in the water in just a few moments.

'She held the little girl tightly. The light was gone. For a few seconds the little girl slipped from her hands and she held her with her arms in the air. Within seconds they reached the yacht's life raft.'

He said the baby had 'slept well' last night.

Mrs Golunski 'had injuries that we treated', according to Dr Cipolla, with reports saying she suffered an injury to her shoulder.

'[She] only has abrasions and a wound that needed stitching,' Dr Cipolla said.

Mr Emsilie, the child's father, was taken 'to the adult emergency room where his wounds were sutured' before he was reunited with Mrs Golunski and their daughter Sofia, Dr Cipolla said.

'We reunited the whole family in a room in the emergency room. They are here with us,' he added.

Ayla Ronald

Another survivor is Clifford Chance lawyer Ayla Ronald, 36, who was part of the successful legal team invited to go sailing with Lynch, according to her father Lin.

Mr Ronald told The Telegraph : 'I have texted with my daughter and she hasn't given me any updates about missing personnel or saved personnel. She has only said to me that there are deaths, and she and her partner are alive.

'The only other information I've got is that Ayla's phone is apparently the only one that's had a battery, and so she's been acting in some fashion as a co-ordinator with the medics.'

Mr Ronald said his daughter was also a keen sailor. 'She just passed her captain's ticket a few months ago in Greece. She's not an active sailor, but she loves it.'

She took the tragic final picture on board the doomed Bayesian yacht and shared it to her Instagram story the evening before a freak storm.

Ms Ronald, 36, from London, and her partner were among those rescued after the tech tycoon's £30million superyacht sank just 300 metres off the coast of the Italian island early on Monday morning.

Leah Randall   On-board hostesses Leah Randall, 20, from South Africa, also survived the tragedy.

Heidi Randall, Leah's mother, told Sky News: 'I'm beyond relieved that my daughter's life was spared by the grace of God.

'It doesn't make it any easier living with heartache of those who have lost their lives or missing.'

Leah was photographed leaving the coastguard headquarters yesterday alongside a fellow crew member.

Other survivors

Other survivors included Irish woman Sasha Murray, 29, Matthew Fletcher, 41, from London, captain James Calfield 51, from New Zealand, Myin Htun Kyaw, 39, from Myanmar and the Matthew Griffith.

Speaking from a hospital room in the town of Termini Imerese close to Palermo, Mr Calfied, in a state of grief and shock, could only utter one sentence.

'We didn't see it coming,' he told La Repubblica.

Rescuers claimed that survivors spoke of the ship going down in 'two minutes' and that it appears that the yacht 'wasn't anchored in a safe place' at the time of sinking.

They were rescued by crews from nearby boats including that of Karsten Borner, the captain of a sailing ship anchored near the Bayesian, who said his team struggled to keep their boat afloat when the tornado hit.

Fabio Cefalu, a fisherman in Porticello who witnessed the tragedy unfold, said he saw a waterspout – a sort of mini-tornado – that lasted about 12 minutes shortly before 4am.

At around 4.10am he said he saw a red flare go off from Bayesian but by the time he was able to reach the area about 20 minutes later the yacht had all but disappeared. 'We found only the cushions, and a few planks floating in the water,' he said.

Three more survivors were named as on-board hostesses Leah Randall, 20, from South Africa, Katya Chicken, 23, from Germany, and Leo Eppel.

Both Leah and Katya have been interviewed by officials from the CoastGuard investigating the circumstances of the sinking.

On Tuesday evening two crew members, Tus Koopmans and Eaton Parker, were also named as survivors. No age or nationalities were provided.

Recaldo Thomas

The Palermo Port Authority told Canadian broadcaster CBC News officials recovered the body of Mr Thomas, who is believed to have been the vessel's Canadian chef.

He was reportedly from Canada but was living in Antigua.
