Video shows moments before superyacht went down in storm off Sicily
Newly released video captures a luxury superyacht being battered by a violent storm before it suddenly sank off Sicily with 22 people aboard Monday.
The grainy images obtained by NBC News and other outlets were recorded on closed-circuit television not far from where the Bayesian was anchored, about a half-mile from the port of Porticello, on Sicily’s northern coast .
The yacht's 250-foot mast, illuminated with lights and lashed by the storm, appears to bend to one side before it finally disappears and is replaced by darkness.
The speed with which a yacht built to handle the roughest seas capsized stunned maritime experts.
“I can’t remember the last time I read about a vessel going down quickly like that, you know, completely capsizing and going down that quickly, a vessel of that nature, a yacht of that size,” said Stephen Richter of SAR Marine Consulting.
British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and five of the 22 other people who were aboard the 184-foot vessel remain unaccounted for and are believed to be trapped in the Bayesian’s hull, nearly 170 feet underwater.
Officials confirmed Monday that at least one person, the ship’s cook, had died.
Superyachts like the Bayesian, which had been available for charters at a rate of $215,000 a week, are designed to stay afloat even as they are taking on water to give the people aboard a chance to escape, Richter said.
“Boats of this size, they’re taking passengers on an excursion or a holiday,” Richter said. “They are not going to put them in situations where it may be dangerous or it may be uncomfortable, so this storm that popped up was obviously an anomaly. These vessels that carry passengers, they’re typically very well-maintained, very well-appointed.”
Built by Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi in 2008, the U.K.-registered Bayesian could carry 12 guests and a crew of up to 10, according to online specialist yacht sites. Its nearly 250-foot mast is the tallest aluminum sailing mast in the world, according to CharterWorld Luxury Yacht Charters.
On Tuesday, Italian rescue workers resumed the search for Lynch and the five other passengers still missing: Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah; Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife.
“The fear is that the bodies got trapped inside the vessel,” Salvatore Cocina, the head of civil protection in Sicily, told Reuters .
The Bayesian is owned by a firm linked to Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, who was one of the 15 people rescued Monday after it capsized.
“It’s extremely rare for a boat of this size to sink,” Richter said.
What’s not rare is the kind of storm that sank it , said Simon Boxall, senior lecturer in oceanography at Britain’s University of Southampton.
“People assume the Mediterranean is this rather calm and passive place that never gets storms and always blue skies,” Boxall said. “In fact, you get some quite horrendous storms that are not uncommon at this time of year.”
The president of Italy’s meteorological society has said Monday’s violent storm may have involved a waterspout, essentially a tornado over water, or a downburst, which occurs more frequently but doesn’t involve the rotation of the air.
Luca Mercalli, president of the Italian Meteorology Society, also said recent temperatures may have been a factor.
“The sea surface temperature around Sicily was around 30 degrees Celsius [86 Fahrenheit], which is almost 3 degrees more than normal,” Mercalli told Reuters. “This creates an enormous source of energy that contributes to these storms.”
The Mediterranean sailing vacation was designed to be a celebration for Lynch, who two months ago was acquitted by a San Francisco jury of fraud charges stemming from the 2011 sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion.
Prosecutors alleged that Lynch, dubbed “Britain’s Bill Gates,” and Autonomy’s vice president for finance, Stephen Chamberlain, had padded the firm’s finances ahead of the sale. Lynch’s lawyers argued that HP was so eager to acquire Autonomy that it failed to adequately check the books .
Lynch had taken Morvill, who was one of his defense attorneys, on the luxury trip.
Chamberlain was not on the Bayesian.
In what appears to be a tragic coincidence, a car struck and killed Chamberlain on Saturday as he was jogging in a village about 68 miles north of London, local police said.
“Steve fought successfully to clear his good name at trial earlier this year, and his good name now lives on through his wonderful family,” Chamberlain’s lawyer, Gary Lincenberg, said in a statement .

Dramatic shipwreck of the Benetti yacht Domani: the video
- Alex Giuzio
- May 12, 2022
A 45-metre yacht at the mercy of the waves, inexorably taking on water with seven frightened people on board awaiting rescue. They are rather dramatic images of the shipwreck of the Benetti yacht ‘ Domani ‘ , which last Saturday 7th May at seven o’clock in the morning local time ran into serious trouble while about 25 miles off Grays Harbor, along the Washington coast. The video, shot by US Coast Guard men and posted on Twitter , shows the distressed condition of the luxury motorboat as it is being rescued. Fortunately, there are no injuries among the seven people on board at the time of the shipwreck.
According to reports from the US Coast Guard, due to a technical problem the crew was unable to close the stern door; as a result, water flooded into the beach club, i.e. the lower part of the yacht. Shortly afterwards, the yacht’s crew also found smoke and activated the engine room fire extinguishing system, causing a blackout and loss of propulsion. To maintain communication with the coast guard, the crew used the yacht’s emergency batteries.
The yacht ‘Domani’ was delivered in 2004 and is part of the Benetti Vision series. The exterior design was by Stefano Righini, while the interior is by Zuretti

'No medical concerns' after 45m Domani disables 45-miles offshore
After passing the strait of juan de fuca, domani will be towed to a shipyard in port angeles, where it will undergo repairs….

At roughly 07:00 on the morning of Saturday the 7th of May, the 45m Benetti motoryacht Domani was disabled 45 miles north of Grays Harbour in Washington. Although seven people were on board, no injuries or medical concerns have been reported as of yet, however, the US Coast Guard did state that the incident was caused due to flooding of the beach club and the crew being unable to close the transom door.
The motor yacht is now being towed to a shipyard in Port Angeles where it will undergo the necessary repairs and insurance checks. The question now being asked is exactly what led to such an unlikely and bizarre occurrence. Both the REG Yacht Code and MI Yacht Code require that openings in the yacht's shell doors ‘May be manually closed and locked in the event of power or hydraulic failure’.
Providing the incident wasn’t a result of human error, an event such as this could spark review and debate on the leniency of regulations and seaworthiness of the current fleet. If the regulations allow for a manual hydraulic pump then it could be worth speculating whether or not the right hydraulic pressure had been maintained, or if there were perhaps any impurities in the hydraulic oil. Another angle to consider is whether the transom door was open before or after the yacht departed from the harbour - if the door was opened prior to departure then damage sustained while underway would provide a more obvious reason as to why the crew were unable to close it.

LinkedIn user Eddie Cashman commented on a post highlighting the incident saying, “ I've been on a Bennetti where we sometimes couldn't close the stern door under the power of it's own hydraulic system. The captain would rig a line from a capstan to a cleat on the door while I operated the hydraulics and sure enough, the thing would get up enough that the hydraulics would do the rest of the work.”
In the same thread, Cashman continued, “It only happened once to me but several times to the captain meanwhile the door was operated a huge amount of times. Hard to find the error from an outside perspective when it's hidden amongst many successful operations, particularly when the surveyor or whoever may arrive at a closed door, see it open, close then complete the check. It seems like the similarity of this incident and my own was a sea day where the beach club was open for an extended period, which would further exclude an outside perspective. Up to the crew to report the issue and who knows, Bennetti might know about the issue, wouldn't surprise me.”
Whatever the reason may be for this incident, the most important thing is that the crew are safe and the coastguards acted quickly and efficiently enough to resolve the issue and tow the yacht to a shipyard. Fortunately, no medical or pollution concerns were reported.

VIDEO: 7 rescued as $8.5m superyacht suffers malfunction in large waves
Wednesday, May 11th, 2022
Written by: Marine Industry News
Seven people have been rescued after the 43-metre Benetti superyacht Domani suffered a malfunction off the coast of Grays Harbor, Washington.
The US Coast Guard has released dramatic footage of the US$8.5m yacht rolling violently and being pummeled by large waves, 25 miles off the Pacific Coast.

The crew made a distress call after they realised they could not close the transom door, and the beach club started taking on water. According to the Coast Guard, the crew also switched on the fire suppression system after spotting smoke, which resulted in a loss of power and light, leaving the yacht floundering in large swell.
Coast Guard crews rescued the seven people aboard, and no injuries or pollution concerns were reported. It is currently unknown why the transom door failed.
The US Coast Guard’s vessel Cutter Active towed the vessel to the entrance of the Strait of Juan de Fuca for ten hours. She was then handed to a commercial towing agency and is currently undergoing repairs in Port Angeles.
Domani was reportedly sold in April 2021, with a last known asking price of US$8.5m. The motoryacht, which was launched in 2004 and has previously been used as a charter vessel, can accommodate up to 12 guests in five bedrooms and has a crew of nine.

What might have caused Sicily yacht to sink
Specialist divers continue to search for the remaining people who were on board a luxury superyacht which capsized off the coast of Sicily on Monday morning - but questions have been asked about why the vessel sank.
According to vessel tracking app Vesselfinder, the boat left the Sicilian port of Milazzo on 14 August and was last tracked east of Palermo on Sunday evening, with a navigation status of "at anchor".
It is believed the ship was struck by a tornado over the water - otherwise known as a waterspout - causing Bayesian to capsize.
Waterspouts - more common in Italy than you think
Witnesses have described seeing a waterspout form during the storm before the sinking of the Bayesian.
Most are familiar with what tornadoes look like - they are rotating columns of destructive winds, protruding from the base of clouds down to the ground.
According to BBC Weather, waterspouts are just that too, but are over water rather than land.
Instead of dust and debris swirling around the core of strong winds, it is water mist whipped up from the surface.
Like tornadoes, most are only short-lived, narrow columns and are not easily picked out on weather radars, so many will go unreported.
However, they are not as rare as you may think.
According to the International Centre for Waterspout Research there were 18 confirmed waterspouts off the coast of Italy on 19 August alone.
In the northern hemisphere, waterspouts are most common in late summer and through the autumn, when sea temperatures are at their highest, fuelling the storm clouds.
However, with sea temperatures rising due to climate change there is a concern that they could become more common.
In the last week, the Mediterranean has registered its highest sea surface temperature on record, which has helped to energise this recent storm outbreak.

Another factor for investigators to consider is the role of the boat's keel in the stormy weather.
A keel is a weighted, fin-like part of the boat that protrudes from its base and helps keep the boat stable.
When the wind pushes the boat onto its side, the weight of the keel counteracts the lean and pushes the boat back level.
On a large yacht like the Bayesian, keels are often designed to be retracted so that the vessel can dock in areas that are not as deep, like a harbour.
When the keel is raised, it makes the boat much less stable.
In this case, the wreck of the Bayesian was found at a depth of 50m (164ft), which suggests there was no reason that the keel needed to be retracted.
Did Bayesian's mast snap?
The Bayesian was built by Italian shipbuilder Perini in 2008 and was last refitted in 2020.
According to Perini's website Bayesian has a 75m (246ft) mast which it claims is the tallest aluminium mast in the world.
Karsten Borner, the captain of another yacht anchored nearby at the time of the storm, said there was a "very strong hurricane gust" and he had to battle to keep his vessel steady.
He saw the Bayesian's mast "bend and then snap", according to Italy's Corriere della Sera daily newspaper.
But, providing an update on the rescue mission, Marco Tilotta, from the Palermo fire service divers' unit, told AFP the ship was lying on its side in one piece.
Matthew Schanck, chair of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, explained it is difficult to say whether the mast broke.
"I think, and this is pure guess work, but the evidence that we are getting from the divers is the vessel is basically intact, lying on its side reportedly," he told the BBC.
"If the mast was broken, that would be a significant thing that would be reported."
Mr Schanck added he believed what happened to Bayesian was "a freak event".
"Vessels aren't designed to be out sailing in that weather - 65 to 85mph that's the top of what a vessel would be out in and that's with its sails down," he said.
"They aren't designed to sail through tornadoes or water spouts."
Separately, Sam Jefferson who is the editor of Sailing Today magazine, added: “The manner in which the yacht was built - how many watertight bulkheads it had et cetera - is vital to understanding what happened.
“Superyachts are air conditioned so most, if not all, the windows and doors are closed at night to keep the boat cool."
Record-breaking Mediterranean temperatures
Since mid-June the sea surrounding Sicily – the western Mediterranean Basin – has been experiencing a severe heatwave.
The European Union’s climate change service, Copernicus, has been reporting sea surface temperatures in the region have repeatedly breached 30°C (86F) - four degrees higher than the 20-year average for this time of the year.
Spanish researchers at the Institut de Ciencies del Mar in Barcelona confirmed last Thursday the maximum sea surface temperature record had been broken in the Mediterranean Sea.
In both 2023 and 2024, the record was broken for the highest average temperature recorded around the world on one day .
Scientists put the rapidly rising temperatures down to climate change – oceans have taken the brunt of rising temperatures absorbing around 90% of the excess heat.
Following last year’s record ocean temperatures, Prof Mike Meredith from the British Antarctic Survey told the BBC: "The fact that all this heat is going into the ocean, and in fact, it's warming in some respects even more rapidly than we thought it would, is a cause for great concern.”

The 40-metre-long luxury vessel was sailing from Gallipoli to Milazzo overnight on Saturday when it got into trouble around 15km from Italy’s Catanzaro Marina. Footage shows the yacht, named My Saga, rapidly disappearing beneath waves, as lifeboats appear to float beside it. The captain sent out a distress call to the Port Authority of Crotone, with officials told the yacht was taking on a significant amount of water from the stern. The Italian coastguard dispatched two patrol vessels and rescued all four passengers and five crew members on board. A tugboat sent out at dawn was unable to save the superyacht from sinking because of worsening weather conditions, the Super Yacht Times reports. The Saga finally sank at around 1pm on Sunday. The outlet reports the yacht, which was built in Monaco back in 2007, was flying under the Cayman Islands flag with an all-Italian crew when it sunk. An investigation has been launched into the cause. It comes after a £6 million superyacht sunk after it went up in flames in the UK on the Torquay harbourside. The 85ft vessel was consumed by fire , with thick black smoking billowing into the sky. The yacht reportedly drifted out into the harbour after the fire burnt through ropes securing it to the pier, but the vessel was later secured by the fire service. A fire service statement revealed that the vessel contained approximately 8000 litres of diesel fuel. Remains of 9 killed in California Marine sinking recoveredSAN DIEGO (AP) — Authorities on Friday recovered the bodies of nine people killed when a Marine landing craft sank in hundreds of feet of water off the Southern California coast, authorities said. The remains of seven Marines and a Navy sailor were found after underwater salvage operations that followed the sinking on July 30. They will be flown to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware to be prepared for burial by mortuary affairs teams, according to a statement Friday night from the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force. The remains “will then be released to their families in accordance with their wishes,” the statement said. The amphibious vehicle sank in 385 feet (117 meters) of water as it headed back to a Navy ship after completing routine training, the military said. The craft sank less than a mile from San Clemente Island off the coast of San Diego. A diving and salvage ship carrying special equipment arrived on Thursday and recovered the bodies and the vehicle, the military said. The dead were identified earlier this week as: Pfc. Bryan J. Baltierra, 19, of Corona, California; Lance Cpl. Marco A. Barranco, 21, of Montebello, California; Pfc. Evan A. Bath, 19, of Oak Creek, Wisconsin; U.S. Navy Hospitalman Christopher Gnem, 22, of Stockton, California; Pfc. Jack Ryan Ostrovsky, 21, of Bend, Oregon; Cpl. Wesley A. Rodd, 23, of Harris, Texas; Lance Cpl. Chase D. Sweetwood, 19, of Portland, Oregon; and Cpl. Cesar A. Villanueva, 21, of Riverside, California. Eight other people were rescued but one died at the scene. He was identified as Marine Lance Cpl. Guillermo S. Perez, 19, of New Braunfels, Texas. His body was flown to Dover Air Force Base on Wednesday. All of the Marines aboard were attached to the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit of the 1 Marine Expeditionary Force, based at nearby Camp Pendleton, north of San Diego. “We hope the successful recovery of our fallen warriors brings some measure of comfort” to their families, said a statement from Col. Christopher Bronzi, commanding officer of the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit. The commandant of the Marine Corps has suspended all waterborne operations of its more than 800 amphibious assault vehicles until the cause of the accident is determined. The fact is, there is no statewide prohibition on the use of high emission two-stroke vessel engines, and there is no plan to prohibit them. The state regulations, from the California Air Resources Board (ARB) Recreational Marine Engine Program , are directed at the manufacture and sale of NEW marine gasoline two-stroke engines. ("New" means the engine has never been sold to an end-user.) The ARB regulations ordered vessel engine manufacturers to build cleaner emission engines meeting increasingly strict standards with steps in 2001, 2004, and 2008. These ARB regulations do not affect the use of any vessels on waterways, other than the fact that consumers will obtain improved gas mileage from the new models now on the market. A number of cities, counties or districts have adopted ordinances on drinking water reservoirs that restrict or ban the use of high emission, carbureted or electronic fuel injection (EFI) two-stroke marine engines. There are no salt-water or river restrictions based solely on high emission vessel engines. Cleaner technology direct-injection two-stroke marine engines, manufactured since 1999, can be used on all waterways in California, except for some waterways that have generic prohibitions, such as banning all motorboats or all personal watercraft. We hope this clears up any confusion about this subject. Should you have any questions, please contact [email protected]. Editor's Note: The California Air Resources Board's new regulations requiring manufacturers to reduce emissions from new outboard and personal watercraft engines will become effective in three stages--2001, 2004 and 2008. ARB believes that by 2010, the regulations will achieve a 30-ton-per-day reduction of hydrocarbons and oxides of nitrogen over the current U.S. EPA standards, and 44 tons per day by 2020. ARB estimates that carbureted two-stroke engines discharge up to 20-30 percent of their fuel unburned into the air and water. ARB will also require that each new engine be provided with a label to certify that the engine complies with the new regulations. The label will feature from one to three stars, depending on the emission level, with three stars indicating the lowest level of exhaust emissions. Is the Air Resources Board banning two-stroke engines used for boats? What types of watercraft are affected by arb's regulations, will i have to buy a new boat engine, will i be able to sell my pre-2001 model year engine in california, can i still use my boat on my favorite lake or river, what engines will be available that meet the new requirements, what about the label program. A brief history of boating, shipping accidents off the coast of Ventura CountyThe waters off the coast of Ventura County have experienced numerous boating accidents – some fatal – over the years. This week's fire aboard and subsequent sinking of the Santa Barbara-based Conception counts among the region's worst. As of Wednesday, 33 bodies had been recovered, but 34 passengers in total are presumed dead from the dive boat blaze early Monday near Santa Cruz Island. Here's a list of some other local maritime incidents:
Though not a maritime accident, on Jan. 31, 2000, Alaska Airlines Flight 261 crashes off the Ventura County coast, killing 83 passengers and five crew members. This is not a comprehensive list. If you know of any other local boating accidents that should be added to it, please contact Star staff reporter Mike Harris at [email protected] or 805-437-0323. A carbureted two-stroke engine can emit up to 25-30 percent of its fuel unburned into the water or atmosphere, which is why high-emission engines are prohibited on some lakes. There are no salt-water or river restrictions in California on high-emission two-stroke engines, excluding personal watercraft (vessels such as Jet Skis) bans in some areas.
