Lürssen is well-known as the builder of the world’s largest yachts. Responsible for 13 of the top 25 world’s largest yachts including the 180.65-meter yacht AZZAM as #1 in length and gigayacht DILBAR #1 in the gross tonnage category.

About LURSSEN YACHTS

Lürssen is a family run yacht builder with 5 yards in Germany and headquarters in Bremen-Vegesack. Today, Lürssen is responsible for launching some of the world’s most iconic yachts and working with the yachting industry’s most coveted yacht designers and architects. The shipyard also builds naval ships, specialized custom boats and has a refit center.

RECENT LURSSEN YACHT LAUNCHES

2020 has marked an extremely active year for the shipbuilder. The 87m Project HAWAII was seen in the Baltic Sea preforming sea trials after it left the Rendsburg yard. Shortly after that, the German Naval Yard Kiel merged with Lürssen in a joint venture with goals to reinforce the efficiency and sustainability of the German naval shipbuilding industry to compete on a global level. Shortly after the merger the 90m superyacht project 1601 was revealed in Rendsburg. The technical launch of the hull and superstructure mark another great milestone for the German builder. More recently, in June, Lürssen delivered the highly secretive Project LIGHTNING. Details of Project LIGHTNING have been sparse.

LURSSEN YACHT SCHEHERAZADE

The 130-meter (426’ 6”) highly secretive yacht, Project Lightning, now called M/Y SCHEHERAZADE – was delivered early morning on June 1 st , 2020 and made its maiden voyage headed to Norway. Very few details have been released, including designers and architects. The gigayacht features 2 large helipads and a large beach club. The yacht is among the top largest yachts in the world. 

LURSSEN Project 1601

The completed hull and superstructure of Project 1601 made a splash at its initial launch on May 26 th in Northern Germany. The exterior design, by Espen Oino, revealed modern features dominated by straight lines, angular corners and planar surfaces.

The interior of Project 1601 is set to be designed by Dölker + Voges. The interior characteristics will mirror the modern exterior. Project management throughout the build will be managed by Cornelsen & Partner.

After the launch, the yacht entered Lürssen’s floating dock and will not be seen again until 2021. At the same facility in Rendsburg, another Lürssen build, Project 13800, was seen closer to completion as delivery for 13800 is set for Spring of 2021. The 53.9-meter Lürssen was commissioned in 2018 at the Monaco Yacht Show and features four decks with a pool on the aft deck.

TOP 10 LARGEST LURSSEN YACHTS

. The yard currently has 70+ superyachts in operation. Some of the more notable yachts include Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen’s 414-foot superyacht OCTOPUS and Oracle CEO Larry Ellison’s 453-foot yacht RISING SUN.

AZZAM 180.61-meter 2013 Lürssen at 13,136 Gross Tons. AZZAM features exterior design by Nauta and interior by Creation Line Decoration. AZZAM is currently undergoing a refit at MB92 in Barcelona, Spain.

DILBAR 156-meter 2016 Lürssen at 15,917 Gross Tons. DILBAR features two helipads, a 25 meter pool, a 30,000kw diesel-electric power plant and can accommodate 36 guests in 20 staterooms with a crew of 96!

#3 AL SAID 155-meter 2008 Lürssen at 15,850 Gross Tons. AL SAID, the 8th longest yacht in the world, accommodates up to 70 guests with a crew of 200. She was designed by Espen Oeino, and the interior design was created by RWD.

#4 A+ 147.25-meter 2012 Lürssen at 12,532 Gross Tons. Formally known as TOPAZ, the yacht's interior was designed by Terence Disdale Design and the exterior designed by Tim Heywood.

#5 SCHEHERAZADE

#5 SCHEHERAZADE 140-meter Lürssen at 10,100 Gross Tons. Also known as Project LIGHTNING, details regarding this yacht have been cloaked in secrecy.

#6 AL SALAMAH

#6 AL SALAMAH 139.3-meter Lürssen at 12,234 Gross Tons. AL SALAMAH features an exterior design and interior by Terence Disdale. She cruises at 17 knots and reaches a top speed of 21.0 kn. She can accommodate 40 with a crew of 94.

#7 RISING SUN

#7 RISING SUN 138-meter Lürssen at 7,841 Gross Tons. RISING SUN underwent a refit in 2019. She accommodates 18 guests with 45 crew members.

#8 FLYING FOX

#8 FLYING FOX 136-meter Lürssen at 9,022 Gross Tons. Features an exterior design by Espen Oeino and an interior by Mark Berryman. FLYING FOX can sleep up to 22 guests with a crew of 54. The yacht features a one-of-a-kind wellness center, spread across two decks and includes a cryosauna, hydro bath and wet massage treatment area.

#9 CRESCENT

#9 CRESCENT 135-meter Lürssen at 9,194 Gross Tons. CRESCENT was refit in Italy in 2019 and features an exterior design by Espen Oeino and an interior by Zuretti Interior Design. She has accommodations for 18 guests with 40 crew. Little is known about the yacht but it is rumored to have a glass bottom pool and 2 deck atrium.

#10 OCTOPUS

#10 OCTOPUS 126.2-meter Lürssen at 9,932 Gross Tons. Currently for Sale. OCTOPUS is an explorer style yacht with 2 helipads. Built to Ice-class 1A with a range of 12,500nm and reaching a max speed of 19 knots.

140m Lurssen 'Project Lightning' launched

Lurssen’s 140m/427ft motor yacht ‘Project Lightning’ has hit the waters for the first time.

This morning saw Project Lightning hit the water for the first time at Lurssen’s facilities in Bremen. 

The superyacht, which may measure in excess of 130m, will be the 19th largest yacht in the world when she is delivered.

Known only as Project Lightning, the megayacht’s specifications and amenities have been kept a closely guarded secret. 

Pictures tell us she will have a pair of helipads on the foredeck and aft deck, as well as multiple pools and relaxation areas. 

It is not yet known who has created the interior styling of the motor yacht . The exterior design comes courtesy of Espen Oeino. Oeino and his team are responsible for the exteriors of two yachts already delivered this year: Flying Fox and Oceanco's 90m/295ft superyacht DreAMBoat .

Project Lightning is expected to be Lurssen's largest unveiling of this year. It comes shortly after the yard delivered the world's largest charter yacht, the 136m/446ft superyacht 'Flying Fox' .

Lurssen Yachts

Lürssen has remained a family-run German shipyard since its inception in 1875 and is now in its fourth generation of private ownership. The company was founded by Friedrich Lürssen with a desire to create a leading shipyard in both quality and performance.

Lürssen is responsible for building some of the world’s finest luxury yachts between 50 and 180 metres, and can claim to have produced the world’s first motor yacht in 1886.

With headquarters in Bremen and a workforce of 1800, Lürssen maintains three state-of-the-art production facilities in northern Germany. Lürssen also offers unique facilities and unrivalled potential for carrying out multiple refits simultaneously - whether a yacht is a Lürssen yacht or one built by another shipyard.

Specialised expertise and experience are the corner stones of Lürssen’s success which has seen the company launch more than 13,000 vessels since 1875.

Services 

Priding itself on being on the cutting-edge of technology, Lürssen also associates itself with the fields of Research and Innovation, Production Technologies, System Integration, and Yacht Management.

The latest generation of Lürssen superyachts boasts improved fuel efficiency and lower emissions as well as a reduction in noise levels.

In 2025 Lürssen will deliver their first yacht with fuel cell technology for a pioneering client. The fuel cell is flanking the conventional generators and is a big step to an emission free Lürssen yacht. The innovative company does not however lose sight of its heritage and takes care of the minute details with many elements of their vessels being completed by hand and employing the skills of unique craftsmen to deliver a yacht that every owner dreams of.

The company lends its name to some of the yachting world’s most recognisable vessels including the motor yachts Carinthia VII, Pelorus and Octopus. Lürssen is also perhaps most renowned for bringing the world the largest superyacht to date, the 180.6m Azzam and also the biggest yacht by gross tonnage, the 156 m Dilbar.
